Without a doubt, the single most enjoyable and informative video review and information I have ever watched. No shouting, no drama, no antics at all, just solid, informative, and easy to hear and listen to information. Thank you for such a professional presentation. I owned a Magma colored 2013 FJ Cruiser brand new from the dealer and kept it for 2 years. I stupidly sold it for another family SUV which I never loved like my FJ. Fast forward to last week, and I found a totally Creampuff 2013 in Calvary Blue. I snagged it immediately and I am again deliriously happy with my FJ. I am close to 60 and I intend to drive this vehicle for the rest of my life. I love it that much!
Excellent review of the things to look for on an FJC! Big thanks for verifying what problems the owner needs to keep in mind. On my '08 with 170,000 miles (owned since new) I haven't had issues with most of the problems mentioned but I have had to replace the throttle body at about 70,000 miles and replaced both front wheel bearings at about 90,000 miles. As for the windshield, I'm on about my 4th one and it has several minor chips. Always used premium and glad I have based on your comments. It's not my primary vehicle and used mostly on summer road trips out west from the southeast pulling a small offroad camper. Before each long distance road trip I take it in to the dealer for an oil change, tire rotation if needed, and a good visual inspection by the shop techs. I'll have all fluids changed or topped off as advisable. So far, the FJ has never let me down. Again, great review! I think I'll go pop the hood and crawl under it to check things out (again!).
Spot on the common problems. My alternator went at 75k miles I had both front calipers freeze up. I had a windshield chip that I took care of right away and didn’t have to replace the windshield and also was getting lots of rust underneath. My mirror lights I replaced with LED bulbs and never had one go out again. I miss my 07Voodoo Blue to this day. Excellent thorough and spot on video. When I’m ready to buy another car I will definitely get something you recommend Thank you
It’s apparent this guy doesn’t off-road or use a FJ! I recently bought a 2010 and it has been the best rig ever! And I’ve had just about everything else out there before! FJ cruiser is legit! And you can make it even better!
We just sold our 2012 trail teams edition with a trd package to get into a 22’ 4Runner. You are correct about the interior badge. 2012 trail teams color was radiant red with a color matched roof. I believe the trd package included wheels, tires and the roof rack. Great truck. Got big money even with 140k on the clock. One thing I think you should have covered, and maybe I missed it but greasing the prop shafts to avoid the classic thunk. Hitting those zerks is a must.
Are you glad you got the 4Runner? I’m considering getting the 22 off road premium and selling my FJ. Getting my baby in n out of the back is a pain which is why I’m considering selling.
@@anthonyorellana3525 so we made the switch because we have a baby coming in august. At its core the runner is the FJ with more creature comforts. In your case I believe you’ll still even have the manual transfer case. Ours has an electronic transfer case which is the only thing I’m not thrilled about, other than that. It’s comfortable, rides great and we’ve even noticed a decent mpg bump without the giant aggressive off-road tires the FJ had. Overall we do it again without hesitation.
Good to hear a professional mechanic’s point of view! The internal badging you mentioned is actually a yellow Trail Teams badge for those from 2008-2013. The 2014 has a silver badge that is a Trail Teams Ultimate Edition that is numbered. I own a 2012 TTSE.
Hey car care nut, just want to say thanks for all you do and all your info! I am wondering if you would be able to do a virtual inspection (zoom or whatever works best) as I am looking to buy an FJ? I would of course pay whatever fee for your time and would be super grateful. Thank you again for all you do and I look forward to hearing from you!
Windshield replacement itself is something most FJ owners experienced but to me a real problem is how those glass guys reinstall other parts around the windshield. They may be a glass specialist but not for each specific car design. I have repeated problems with moldings and cowls improperly reinstalled around windshield.
@@earthling1984false. I NEVER tailgate, have 3 cracks on my windshield from semi’s kicking up rocks and hitting my windshield. I wasn’t even directly behind one, I was in the lane right of it when it happened. The windshield is unfortunately a poor design in a few ways, the main being it’s more vertical than most.
True, it is basically a 4runner. Alternator is a slightly lower output than the 4runner. Also, FJ is built in same "Prado frame" as the coveted, $100,000 Land Cruiser.
Great information as always. Over the last few years I have recommended my customers test their batteries yearly and at the 4th year to just replace them no matter how good it test. Always having a good, hot battery helps keep the alternator in good health as well as the starter. Hope this finds you well my friend. Family things have prevented me from attending your lives as of late. God bless!!!✌️

This is a fantastic crash course on inspecting and maintaining an FJ. Excellent job. I’m currently looking at a 2013 Magma Color with only 45,000 miles in excellent shape. It’s 10 years old now, and I’m snatching it at an unbelievable price.
Became a fj cruiser fan!!! Video is great and very informative , the guy really knows his stuff and although I didn’t find the answer that I was looking for , I learned a lot more. I recently replaced an engine on one at 289,000 miles that went out because it over heated extremely due to water pump leaking and never took care of , the fj was passed down to a son but the previous owner took really good care of it . The job was intimidating but once I started, it was fairly easy, well once all put together I would hear a noise in belt area and suspected idler pulley but did not address issue .
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I like the variation of topics that you cover that really helps me as a DIYer; unless I can not do it properly. AMD, Just like the old T100 pickup, Hino can really make a solid 'Toyota' SUV when they set their minds to it. I wonder if Toyota or Hino will ever sell us another real 4X4 priced below the 4Runner with an available manual transmission. When they make you CEO of Toyota, I am confident you will take care of our needs. 😉
Don't forget Daihatsu.. Toyota bought them out.. The Daihatsu Delta were tough little trucks border lining commercial units.. Toyota could sell a rugged vehicle based on either platform
@@joebrown9621 I believe Daihatsu sold us one or two of their models with Scion labels. Wrangler and Bronco sell their 2 doors for prices listed below 30K so I don't know why Toyota could not get back in that price bracket.

Thank you, AMD. I have a set of factory takeoff Gen3 Tacoma alloy wheels to replace the stock steel wheels on a 2009 Access Cab, then it will be time to start back on Dad's annual Toyota dealer checkup. Regarding the erect FJ windshield, the old International Scout II (1971-1980) windshield was completely flat. (IH did not coat the interior side of body panels to prevent corrosion until 1979, so I visited quite a number of people in Alaska, who admired the 25 year old 1971 that I was driving, and remarked, "We loved the one we had, and it rusted away..." Thank you again for prompting me to look at VLEDS bulbs, located at the opposite end of Washington state from me.
I snagged a 2014 FJ with 120k miles and now I'm cruising at 161k. That's 41k miles of wild adventures and pushing limits, and this FJ handled it like a boss! The KO2 tires were top-notch too. It came fully loaded from the factory with all the sweet features, and I haven't made any modifications. Sure, I've considered lifting it, but the short wheelbase lets me conquer obstacles without a fuss. Plus, with the stock suspension, I've got a lower center of gravity that keeps me feeling safe and confident when I hit the off-road.
Outstanding video , thank you. My 2007 FJ has 51k mi., I will check the wheel bearings. Another issue with the early FJ's , the brake light switch connected at the brake pedal. If it goes bad the ABS light will come on and sometimes locks the Trans in park. The oem part is about $40

This is a very good video!! Well done! You only said one thing I disagree with... you said you can just "hose out the rubber floor". WRONG ANSWER!!! Water will go down under the rubber floor and soak into the spongy insulation below the rubber. Then mold and yuck! Just vacuum and wipe out the floors with damp paper towels....and... "life is good!" :)

I plan on driving it until they pry the steering wheel from my elderly hands. At 72 I still offroad it whenever I can. It never fails to put a smile on my face when I drive it. Super comfortable for long trips.
The Trail Teams plaque is on the far right corner on the flat wall above the passenger side glove box. I did not know about some of the problems you mentioned on the 07-09 engines. I have a 2007 and have not encountered any of them. I always wondered why the plug change interval was so low. Thanks for that. I will be keeping an eye and ear out for the wheel bearings as I am at 137K miles. I have heard about the alternator going around 140 - 150K so I hope to be ready for that. I am considering doing a change before it fails, we shall see. I did have all the pulleys and belt changed around 130K when the one started screaming. Thanks again for this very informative video!
Trail Teams! Of course not an FJ Cruiser owner, but I know a lot about a lot of 4x4s. A 4x4 enthusiast if you will. Great platform that I recommend to everyone. 4Runner, GX, Tacoma. Made in Japan preferred.
The side mirrors have round lights facing the front for a safety reason. The round headlights are set very close together. From a distance at dark, the fj looks much smaller in width than it actually is. Therefore, the side mirror lets drivers approaching the fj, know that it is a much wider vehicle than it looks like from the distance.
Trail Teams Editions have yellow plastic badge on passenger side dash on lower right hand corner. TRD wheels were factory aftermarket for the Forerunners, I have a set of bronze ones on my 2011 FJ and they look great!
The mirror marker lights are beneficial to oncoming drivers to realize the width of the FJ Cruiser. The headlight RETRO style can be confused for being a much smaller vehicle because the lights are a little too close together.
Lol...And the windshield will never disapoint. Ive replaced all the fluid except the transmission. New pulleys, waterpump, radiador hoses, thermostat, alternator, gas tank straps, tune-up, breaks, tires and led lights. Also grease all the fittings. Especialy on the driveshaft. It will start to feel like your braking after you came to a complete stop. Oil change every 3,000 or less. About to change the transmission fluid and possible the wheel bearings this summer. I have a black 2007 with 130,000. I've done most of this for preventitive maintnace. Not things breaking. I live in rusty land wisconsin. Every spring I take a 6 pack of Rustoleum rust converter spray paint to the underbody. Great video. I've watched it at least 8 times.
Love these videos; thank you for putting in the time and effort on them AMD! I have followed your videos to do several DIYs (oil changes, brake pads, transmission drain & fill). For a video idea, I am wondering if can do a video on Alignments for Toyota & Lexus sedans? I know Alignments are usually not a DIY, but it would be cool to know "behind the scenes" of an alignment and cool details like why some Toyotas cannot adjust certain things (i.e. rear camber is not adjustable, toe is out of range, etc.)
Those rims are from the 5th gen 4Runner. They are called trd pro sema rims. A lot of people love these rims because they look great and are lightweight with a +4 offset which makes them stick out little more. The only downside is they are 7” wide so can’t fit too wide of a tire. People put them on bunch of Toyota trucks and suvs. I have them on my 2nd gen Tacoma

My 2008 has two fixed cracks but I’ve never had to replace it. So far my undercarriage looks new and I’ve only had to replace the bearings and alternator recently. Best car tk have if you want something fun on the weekends. Better than driving a jeep or bronco that are dime a dozen now.
AMD , fantastic review! You really nailed it. I have a 2008 FJ Trail Teams 100K and you said it… the truck is legendary. So unique and interesting not to mention super tough. I do my own basic maintenance but I will check for the issues mentioned. FYI, I did have the tranny shudder and Toyota gave me a brand new one ( under warranty) but that’s it. Love the truck. Thanks again for doing such s great review. Super helpful!!!
Good video but you missed the number 1 problem with the 07-09 FJs. The drive shaft slip yoke/ slip joint. If it is over lubed you will blow out the seals and it will stick. If it is under lubed it will stick. When coming to a stop you will feel a sudden kick like you've been rear ended. Don't worry you haven't been. But you do have a slip yoke that is sticking. To test if it is the slip yoke, shift into neutral before stopping and see if you feel the kick. If you don't then it needs lube or replacement. The fix is to upgrade the prop shaft to the newer style. The 2010+ vehicles seem not to have this problem.
I have a 2012 FJ 4X4 with 370,000 miles and have had 3 issues with almost no maintenance. 70,000 timing chain $3,300. At 340,000 A.C. leak and fix $3,000. At 360,000 power steering lines replaced due to rust, I live in The Keys, $550.

@@robertcross9334 Cool! am about to pick up a '10 trail teams with 80k miles, and trying to figure out what maintenance I should do. Probably going to do trans fluid, oil change, transfer case oil, and maybe brakes. Sounds like the shocks / struts should be good to at least 100k
I always tell ppl “READ THE MANUAL” to any car you buy and understand that it needs maintenance!!!
Another thing I believe in, buying used vehicle especially 4x4s, change all fluids & especially the drive train, front & rear differential with tranny and gear box…. So you have a starting point!
Remember maintenance is cheeper then a monthly car payment!
I have a 20 yr old Taco & a 10 yr old FJ. 😁
Made me feel good when he said 500k miles on alternator. Mine has 210k and still running strong, I’m glad those mirror lights still working
you can replace the brushes for $7.00 and it will run another 200k
Oh, my new FJ, only had 39k original miles io it! So lucky to have found her. Such an amazing vehicle indeed.
That’s a super clean engine bay…kudos to the owner!!!!!
I miss this vehicle. I just purchased the 2021 4runner trd off road premium. But deep down I want an FJ
When I’m ready to buy another car I will definitely get something you recommend
Thank you
It’s apparent this guy doesn’t off-road or use a FJ!
I have a super nice blue ‘12 FJ 104k gonna sell. $28,400..
Thank you. I've been researching FJ's for several months and this is, by far, the most informative... good stuff. !!
The only downside of being an fj owner is you visit the gas pump a lot 😅
Windshield replacement itself is something most FJ owners experienced but to me a real problem is how those glass guys reinstall other parts around the windshield. They may be a glass specialist but not for each specific car design. I have repeated problems with moldings and cowls improperly reinstalled around windshield.
My windshield farts while Im driving in the winter and it’s cold. DAMN YOU SAFELITE!!
I had the same issue!
Had my FJ for almost 10 years. Still on original windshield. Drive correctly and don't follow too close and there should be no problems.
How I fixed that problem was to remove the trim panels myself and I’ll reinstall them after glass replacement easy fix!!
07 fj 370k miles and still running like a beauty.
This is quality content and the RUclips/car community is better because of it. Thank you! A video like this for the second generation Nissan Xterra would be greatly appreciated!
Man you are a mind reader 😂 you keep providing awesome information and content on vehicles I’m interested in so……thank you! 🇨🇦
Even when it’s not necessarily a vehicle I’m interested in you still manage to provide some tidbits of information in the videos that make it worth watching your content. Keep up the great work.
I just got my first FJ & I’m completely in love with it. The first (and only owner besides me) took such great care of it. I want to continue to care take care of it & work on it myself. But I don’t know the first thing about cars🤣🤣🤣
I just found ur channel & love it so much! You are so helpful and knowledgeable.
LIFE IS GOOD🤙🏻🤙🏻
This is a fantastic crash course on inspecting and maintaining an FJ.
I have a 2008 Sandstorm FJ that is not Trail Teams but has all the other optional packages. I bought it last year used, very well kept stock, and I love it. It is my daily driver. Thank you again.
dude you're a great friend and a goldmine when it comes to toyota knowledge. thanks for the hard work and keep putting out awesome videos.
Just hit 300K miles on my 07...... Original owner and will keep it going......
Thanks for putting in the work to help us take care of our Toyotas 🥰
I have an '08 with only $92,000 mi, 76 of it are mine. I've owned it for 14 years and I love it as much today, as the day I bought it. Thank you so much for this video I really appreciate it!
@@rightlanehog3151 Good luck finding a manual Wrangler or Bronco new. I may be in the market for a Bronco Manual in a year or two, but I would not be surprised if they get discontinued by then. Tacos are available with a manual, but you have to be on a higher trim to get one.
@@joebrown9621 I have a 1992 Daihatsu Rocky ! best lil SUV ever !
Why doesn’t anyone in the US buy the XTreme model of the FJ?
I don't own a FJ cruiser I own 4runners, but as Toyota owner, AMD is a Legend, thank you for all the advice sir to Toyota owners 👏👏👏👏.
Hi mate. Thanks for the info. I have owned a 2014 FJ Cruiser for 5 years here in Australia and I love it. Thank again and may God bless you too.
Love driving my 2010 FJ. Feels like I can roll over anything. Great reminder about engaging the 4-wheel drive. I do forget. And I’ll be checking my wheel bearings. And nothing better than walking out of Costco and immediately spotting that bright yellow Sun Fusion in a sea of mundane silver and white!
Very good video for newbies trying to join the club. My 11 is running strong and looking forward to replacing my second wheel bearing when the weather warms up. Also you can't take a hose to the inside, because the insulation will not dry and get moldy
This is the best video for the FJ cruiser on RUclips. There’s a lot of videos on the FJ on RUclips. I’ve owned my ‘08 FJ for 12 years now. If all the other videos are A or A-, this one is A+.
The oem part is about $40
For me, this was the most useful video (from any category) in years. I even clicked on ad to say thanks.
I have 2007 w 225k miles and 2011 w 215k , I let Toyota do maintenance regularly and they keep me in road w zero issues, love this cars and unique value appreciation . Love mirror lights I add Led whites, easy process, thanks for detail review.
I just bought a 2011 FJ with 17,000 original miles. It still smells new. It wasn't cheap at $30k but I couldn't be happier.
Dang that’s a new car right there. I have 46,500 miles on mine and it’s still perfect. But I will be selling soon since I’m getting a new car. I will certainly miss my girl
Can confirm the knock sensor issue and alternator. 2008 FJ cruiser TT and had to get the knock sensor work done thankfully from a Lexus mechanic who did it outside of work for ~$500. Love this FJ and will never sell.
Another great and informative review. Coming from a die hard Toyota enthusiast, @Thecarcarenut knows his stuff and is very descriptive. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and continue the good work!
Wow! I haven’t seen an FJ in a while! Hope to see more of these diagnosis and repair videos!
My parents have a 2007 FJ they bought new and several things that are mentioned on this video have been done on their vehicle and it keeps driving like a new one. Great video.
Looking to buy a FJ Cruiser and this one really helped me out.
On the mirror light, why not just replace with a LED light and one may never have to replace again.
Great video. Luckily, I have had my windshield for 15 years and it has taken a lot of rock strikes off road without any issue.
Co worker of mine just got chassis certified, he's young and inexperienced but is proud of his new Toyota cert and he just got an fj. I'll send him this video
Thanks!
Great timing with this video. I’m in the market for an FJ (every year I’m), and this is a tremendous biased confirmation for me to buy one that my bank account cannot afford a 2014 😆. Your videos never disappoint!
I have the 2008 FJ Cruiser. Bought it new in ‘07. Only used 87 fuel once at the 2008 FJ Cruiser Summit because there wasn’t any premium.
Tacomas have never been made in Japan.
I have listened to umpteen car reviews. This guy is EXTRAORDINARY!❤
Any extra lights off-road is worth it! I upgraded my mirror lights with leds and they are legit!
Trail Teams Editions have yellow plastic badge on passenger side dash on lower right hand corner. TRD wheels were factory aftermarket for the Forerunners, I have a set of bronze ones on my 2011 FJ and they look great!
FJ’s are like Gold right now.
Yep never selling mine. Thing is a beast
If I sell our ‘08 FJ in the US and come back to where I live (outside the US), I can get a brand new 2022 FJ Cruiser with the money 😂
@@inferno83462022 fj? Is Toyota bringing them back now?
@@CAAARRRLL No, they still make and update the FJ Cruiser where I live.
They even make 380nm (280ft-lb) of torque now.
I just got a 2008 in great condition for $18k with 160k miles on it and I'm the 2nd owner!
The mirror marker lights are beneficial to oncoming drivers to realize the width of the FJ Cruiser. The headlight RETRO style can be confused for being a much smaller vehicle because the lights are a little too close together.
not hard to replace the bulbs. the plastic tabs that hold the mirror in place were more of a concern. i broke a few and it was because of dry rot.
Yeah, and be sure to replace with LED's.
I broke one on my mirror tabs as well replacing them. Did you do anything to fix them or just leave it? @@jesspajela7361
Love this video - very practical. Taking my new FJ into the shop next week for a thorough check up and this guide is my check on them.
Wow. That engine bay is CLEAN
I own a 2022 here in Kuwait and I bought it new for just 10.800 KWD which is in my opinion nothing compared to the quality you get. I'm totally happy with the choice I made when I decided to get one of those.
I have a 2007 FJ also. Good truck, no problems runs strong. Didn’t know about the high test gas. I get around 15 mpg. I have 96,000 miles. I love the truck but it’s not for everyone. I live in Pennsylvania so the roads are treated in the winter. I will check the things you pointed out, so far no issue. Thanks for your Video.
Again another great video AMD. The way you explain things is easy enough for even the most inexperienced mechanic to understand. I have a 2022 Tacoma Limited on order. I hope it serves me well. Keep up the great videos
2014 and I LOVE this FJ best vehicle I’ve ever owned and I’m 65 ❤❤❤
Nail on the head, i have 07 185,000 miles & kept up with all the issues
"problem train" ... lol that's a great term never heard that before. Love your phrases and information!
“It’s actually not running fine. You just don’t notice because it’s a Toyota”
Now that’s a manufacturer resume that speaks volumes.
Solid vehicle!!! 213k miles and never had any serious issues
Good information with lots of Toyota mechanic experience and knowledge. Thanks for doing these. videos.
We love the FJ 🤩😍 Wish they still made them.

Excellent video, I am picking up a 2012 FJ next week, very excited.
We’re you able to get the FJ? If so, what are your thoughts now?
My 2008 has two fixed cracks but I’ve never had to replace it. So far my undercarriage looks new and I’ve only had to replace the bearings and alternator recently. Best car tk have if you want something fun on the weekends. Better than driving a jeep or bronco that are dime a dozen now.
Thank you for the great presentation. I have a 2007 and love it.
Enjoyed your video and the back story on the FJC with its quirks
I wish this guy lives closer to me so he could do ALL of my families pre-purchase inspections.
Greetings from Egypt. Love your videos. God bless you
I have a 2012 FJ 4X4 with 370,000 miles and have had 3 issues with almost no maintenance. 70,000 timing chain $3,300. At 340,000 A.C. leak and fix $3,000. At 360,000 power steering lines replaced due to rust, I live in The Keys, $550.

What octane rating did you use?
Love my 2007 FJ. 241k miles and still going strong. I’ve experienced two of the common problems: replaced the alternator twice, and the very day I made the final payment the water pump went out.
