I've heard that NMDA receptors are what makes neurons complex and independent units. Without NMDA receptors neurons would be too simple. I've heard about it in the video of Artem Kirsanov (I recommend watching his videos). He said that If you would describe neurons using logic gates the ones without NMDA receptors can only process basic operations like AND and OR. NMDA allows for more complexity like XOR and even much more complicated logic gates. All the information is backed up by studies and articles, however my interpretation might be wrong to a certain degree, but general idea is indeed true
