His honesty is so refreshing. I can't think of another public figure, Christian or not, who has had the courage that he had to be himself no matter what the consequences. He was a rare & beautiful man.
What a small world. I was standing near Rich when this took place in 1996 - it was the last time I saw him. I live in Missouri and it's a long story why I was even in Kentucky. Never would I have thought I'd get to hear this interview again. Thank you for posting.
I met Chris Tomlin when he was first getting big back in 2002 at the GEC in Nashville. Was a real nice person to talk too. It wasn’t until years later I didn’t realize that Rich had wrote a lot of today’s songs people do covers of. Rich was an awesome human being the world is a totally different place without him.
I was there too. I got a copy of this from the lady who filmed it a couple of months after she filmed it. Glad someone put it up on RUclips. Great interview. A highlight of my life in many ways.

I just watched the movie Ragamuffin about Rich Mullins which lead me to looking up interviews of him and to this video. Every time I hear an interview or him speak I’m amazed at the profound things that he had to say. It makes me just say, “wow”. It’s awesome that his words are still out there for us to listen to and be impacted by!
Him being down to earth is what attracts me so well. Crazy how a video from 23 years ago would hit home today. I wish I could see him in concert and talk to him! The dude would step on the thinnest of ice, lol. And tbh...we need that.
I really love his personality so much. He is really a blessing, knowing and showing what Gods love really is. Through his weaknesses glorifying God, Gods redemption in his life.
Going back to this interview I realize how much it means to me. So many folk caught up in the big, giant ministry scene, which is good, but there's nothing wrong with doing the Lord's work in little ways. We don't all have to be Billy Graham. So many people do useless things, and So many just talk up the game. Rich Mullins did exactly what God put him on this earth to do, and wanted to in ever increasing amounts or zeal as he got older. 2:20 - he says it himself - just be fully who God wants you to be. He was a great example of this ideal. There is so much good sound theology in what he says in this interview that it's staggering. At this stage in his life, he was running full head long after what God wanted for him. This pursuit is not well known outside of the spiritually mature. This Man died at age 42, but he was about 100 years old in wisdom Feed the poor, give to the lord, ect. HAH! Try living on a Navajo Reservation in abject poverty all day walking around with not shoes on. Try giving over 90% of your own salary to helping the poor, the Indians and Asian missions to India, and live on $24,000 or less per year. This man did! That's why I respect him above all other Christian Artist of his era.

I grew up with Rich Mullins in my life at critical junctures. Icthus took place down the road from my house every year and during this time, I was the "White, middle class, evangelical" Rich is talking about. The next year, when he died, I was at Huntington University, very close to where he grew up. I never understood the obsession Christians had with this guy, but I took him for granted. Surely, I thought, lots of Christians were just like him! lol It is 2021 and although I have totally changed my religious views, Rich still speaks to me. Thanks for posting this.

Great video. I love the brutal honesty this man speaks. Not only is his music writing, composing and performing great but he is one of the best examples of living a Christ-like life that I have seen.
I really understand what Rich is saying. I currently go to a Bible study which requires strict attendance. I've felt like telling the leader I'm not interested in going anymore but last time I didn't show up he told the entire group (according to a member of the group) that what I missed the group for was not that important to miss attendance. I'm not paying for this nor am I getting a college credit. I feel like it is far more important...
I love Rich so much. He just laid it all out there... I doubt that he thought much about if he was impressing his audience. I think he just wanted to impress God.
From what I’ve read about him, he struggled with this. He knew how to get applause. He knew how to play the game, and sometimes did, but didn’t want to. He was trying to be honest about his struggles and what was real.

Having our eyes on Jesus and the videos and music already recorded by Dr. Rich Mullins avoids the moral failure possiblity of elevating someone to levels we shouldn't elevate frail men like myself to in this world.
Rich was a good man and he was a real Christian 😀 his outlook on religion really inspires me ! I also had alcohol and drug addictions but thanks to Rich's life story helped me want to get clean ! Thanks Rich and almighty God 🙏🙏

God can use any of us just like Gideon or Joseph. Rich understood that. He knew his calling was much larger than himself, yet humbled himself, as best he could, before the Cross in every moment.

I like where he tells us that we read and act on being Born again and even highlight it..but then we read and don't act on or highlight.. ..Sell all your possessions and give your money to the poor.. Then he says... that's why God gave us highlighters. .
If I focus on what I have done or have not done for Jesus, I get depressed quickly. But if I put myself under the love of Jesus, and let him love me where I am at, no matter what, it lifts me up. Rich was so right about all of this.

I find myself grieving all over again as I get back into these interviews and develop a more complete picture of who he was. Maybe I’m starting to grieve for the first time, actually. It is so sad we lost him so early. He was prophetic, ahead of his time. He represents a way of living so foreign to me (something I’m not sure I want) yet I find myself wanting to emulate.
Great responses. For me the impact statement summed up would be for me to learn to be free to be holy, instead of bound up in my own concepts of how to pretend to think, believe, and live to be "holy". I see his responses as a great example of a man who was learning to be holy and authentic while also being very, very kind.
He was single but was ok with it. He said if your not strong enough t of handle a woman God gives you celibacy if you're not strong enough for celibacy God gives you a woman. some people are just meant to be single for a good reason I think he was one of those ..
Beautifully done, Rich. Ironically I think his comment about Joseph being sold into slavery is about my understand of Calvinism and predestination. As an artist and a believer he nails the intersection and idea of interest, gifts and calling.
I've struggled my whole life with what he said about God's picture of my life isn't necessarily how I feel my life should be. I just wish God would have seen it to leave him in this world for us.

I think I feel somewhat jipped and yet mostly grateful for the time to listen, repent, hear and see him live 1 time. (8/15/1997) GOD is so big and so wonderful. Ever watch "I wonder if you know him" I think that is the title. Maybe it is "That's my king!" I will see if I can find it. I wish I had heard this interview when I was in middle school (of course, it would still be 20 years before this interview would even take place). But if someone had told me all this, it could have saved me an awful lot of anguish and angst and self-condemnation.

I loved Rich Mullins' music (still do). I was in high school when he died (as well as when this interview took place). He was an intense guy. I know God honored his desire for holiness, but I disagree with him about God not having a plan for your life. I DO agree we shouldn't stress to the point of anxiety about it, but I do believe it is wise to seek God's leading, and that He does have specific plans for us. I'm also not wild about some of the shots he took at "white evangelicals". As a "white evangelical" I am getting tired of being targeted all the time by our left-wing media as being bigoted or out of touch (and it's much worse now than it was in 1996). The point isn't being a white evangelical or a Navajo, or whatever. The point is to be like Christ, and follow what God has said in His word. I have friends who are different nationalities and different church traditions, and yet we all want to obey God's word, and THAT is what counts. I think Rich Mullins really did want that. He was truly seeking the Lord, and I believe God honored that in his life. I believe Rich heard Jesus say, "Well done, Good and faithful servant," when he entered heaven a year after the interview.
As I listen to this interview, I don’t hear him saying “God doesn’t have a plan for your life”. Quite the opposite. He says God does have a plan for your life, it just looks a little different than what we are often being told. I find it remarkable, looking back on this interview, how WAY ahead of his time he was. Whatever Rich was tapping into here is something far more widely acknowledged today. He was a prophet. I don’t think “white evangelicals” are being attacked by Rich here, but I do think he was highlighting the disparity between the gospel, as he understood it, and the norms of dominant culture. What he says in this interview really resonates with me. I just find it hard to believe it was 25 years ago!
First of all: Love, that is the will of God. However you map out your life God just wants you to be loved and to love. Secondly, how freeing was that talk. All the points and highlights he hit about the will of God and holiness just brings it back to an individual human thing. YOu can be you. And finally, he rocked that interviewer's world off kilter you can tell.

Paul D I think the movie showed one picture of Rich...but not the whole picture. The Rich in the movie is way way way too self righteous and way too morose. It doesn't show his work with the navao nation or even his experience with the Catholic church...it generalized a lot of his life. It also generalized the label too much.
I think Rich was saying there is so much Christian talk without the walk and so many cliches and noise in our traditional church philosophy that getting down to absolute basics on the Res could allow GOD to speak to him and deepen their relationship; for Rich to truly become as close to JESUS as possible. I think he finally (Became) and his prayer was answered to be with GOD. He even left this Earth in a bang similar to Elijah in his song.
After hearing Rich Mullins speaking here I’m convinced that Dallas who is the producer/ director of THE CHOSEN pulled all his inspiration from this one video. No, it isn't! Rich states "Well, for me, I think to be truly holy means to be really free." By this, he means to be unattached to the things of this world, and he is absolutely right! To be holy means to be completely committed to loving and serving God and not to be attached to sin or anything worldly. We are in this world but not of it!

He never once wrote anything about praying to Marry, he never even got close to believing that all other denominations went to hell, he states in this very video his desire to escape the ridged organization of the Church and there is no other more ridged denomination than the Catholics. Kind of ironic that he pegs the Calvinists as the ones sitting around waiting for God to tell them which underwear to put on every day when he grew up with heavy Quaker influences. I grew up with a lot of charismatic navel gazing in my circle and it was the Calvinists who led me to the near identical conclusions RM had come to here. I am not a Calvinist myself, but I appreciate that teaching in particular. His comment on the art generally being greater than the artist would save a ton of folks from celebrity worship....and preaching is art too...just sayin'.
Actually, Rich did specify. "Be who God made you to be." He also specifies that we are not supposed to lie down in our sin and stay in that broken state. Rich was very serious about following the Bible. Which is why he mentioned, holiness as a key. Rich would indeed love Homosexuals, and they would love Him. However, he would also be honest with them about their need to change and live in the pattern defined by the bible.

Feed the poor, give to the lord, ect. HAH! Try living on a Navajo Reservation in abject poverty all day walking around with not shoes on. Try giving over 90% of your own salary to helping the poor, the Indians and Asian missions to India, and live on $24,000 or less per year. This man did! That's why I respect him above all other Christian Artist of his era.

I grew up with Rich Mullins in my life at critical junctures. Icthus took place down the road from my house every year and during this time, I was the "White, middle class, evangelical" Rich is talking about. The next year, when he died, I was at Huntington University, very close to where he grew up. I never understood the obsession Christians had with this guy, but I took him for granted. Surely, I thought, lots of Christians were just like him! lol It is 2021 and although I have totally changed my religious views, Rich still speaks to me. Thanks for posting this.

I really understand what Rich is saying. I currently go to a Bible study which requires strict attendance. I've felt like telling the leader I'm not interested in going anymore but last time I didn't show up he told the entire group (according to a member of the group) that what I missed the group for was not that important to miss attendance. I'm not paying for this nor am I getting a college credit. I feel like it is far more important...

From what I’ve read about him, he struggled with this. He knew how to get applause. He knew how to play the game, and sometimes did, but didn’t want to. He was trying to be honest about his struggles and what was real.

Laura BP, I'm on a huge Rich Mullins kick that has gone about a month now, and I pray it lasts for decades. Having our eyes on Jesus and the videos and music already recorded by Dr. Rich Mullins avoids the moral failure possiblity of elevating someone to levels we shouldn't elevate frail men like myself to in this world.

God can use any of us just like Gideon or Joseph. Rich understood that. He knew his calling was much larger than himself, yet humbled himself, as best he could, before the Cross in every moment.

If I focus on what I have done or have not done for Jesus, I get depressed quickly. But if I put myself under the love of Jesus, and let him love me where I am at, no matter what, it lifts me up. Rich was so right about all of this.

I find myself grieving all over again as I get back into these interviews and develop a more complete picture of who he was. Maybe I’m starting to grieve for the first time, actually. It is so sad we lost him so early. He was prophetic, ahead of his time. He represents a way of living so foreign to me (something I’m not sure I want) yet I find myself wanting to emulate.
Great responses. For me the impact statement summed up would be for me to learn to be free to be holy, instead of bound up in my own concepts of how to pretend to think, believe, and live to be "holy". I see his responses as a great example of a man who was learning to be holy and authentic while also being very, very kind.

I think I feel somewhat jipped and yet mostly grateful for the time to listen, repent, hear and see him live 1 time. (8/15/1997) GOD is so big and so wonderful. Ever watch "I wonder if you know him" I think that is the title. Maybe it is "That's my king!" I will see if I can find it. I loved Rich Mullins' music (still do). I was in high school when he died (as well as when this interview took place). He was an intense guy. I know God honored his desire for holiness, but I disagree with him about God not having a plan for your life. I DO agree we shouldn't stress to the point of anxiety about it, but I do believe it is wise to seek God's leading, and that He does have specific plans for us. I'm also not wild about some of the shots he took at "white evangelicals". As a "white evangelical" I am getting tired of being targeted all the time by our left-wing media as being bigoted or out of touch (and it's much worse now than it was in 1996). The point isn't being a white evangelical or a Navajo, or whatever. The point is to be like Christ, and follow what God has said in His word. I have friends who are different nationalities and different church traditions, and yet we all want to obey God's word, and THAT is what counts. I think Rich Mullins really did want that. He was truly seeking the Lord, and I believe God honored that in his life. I believe Rich heard Jesus say, "Well done, Good and faithful servant," when he entered heaven a year after the interview.
As I listen to this interview, I don’t hear him saying “God doesn’t have a plan for your life”. Quite the opposite. He says God does have a plan for your life, it just looks a little different than what we are often being told. I find it remarkable, looking back on this interview, how WAY ahead of his time he was. Whatever Rich was tapping into here is something far more widely acknowledged today. He was a prophet. I don’t think “white evangelicals” are being attacked by Rich here, but I do think he was highlighting the disparity between the gospel, as he understood it, and the norms of dominant culture. What he says in this interview really resonates with me. I just find it hard to believe it was 25 years ago!

First of all: Love, that is the will of God. However you map out your life God just wants you to be loved and to love. Secondly, how freeing was that talk. All the points and highlights he hit about the will of God and holiness just brings it back to an individual human thing. YOu can be you. And finally, he rocked that interviewer's world off kilter you can tell.

It doesn't show his work with the navao nation or even his experience with the Catholic church...it generalized a lot of his life. It also generalized the label too much.

He was weird in some of his "philosophy", some of it was downright unbiblical.
I think Rich was saying there is so much Christian talk without the walk and so many cliches and noise in our traditional church philosophy that getting down to absolute basics on the Res could allow GOD to speak to him and deepen their relationship; for Rich to truly become as close to JESUS as possible. I think he finally (Became) and his prayer was answered to be with GOD. He even left this Earth in a bang similar to Elijah in his song.

After hearing Rich Mullins speaking here I’m convinced that Dallas who is the producer/ director of THE CHOSEN pulled all his inspiration from this one video. I just hope, that he gives credit where it is due. I don’t believe for one minute it all happened in his church that began with a play. NOPE, that didn’t happen people. Please tell me a Dallas gives credit to a Rich Mullins because he clearly understands the real ness of Jesus disciples and he himself. No, it isn't! Rich states "Well, for me, I think to be truly holy means to be really free." By this, he means to be unattached to the things of this world, and he is absolutely right! To be holy means to be completely committed to loving and serving God and not to be attached to sin or anything worldly. We are in this world but not of it!

In my opinion he was non-denominational with mistrust for organized religion especially towards the end of his life. It doesn't matter how much indulgence you pay or child molestation cases you cover up. You can not make a lie the truth.

Kind of ironic that he pegs the Calvinists as the ones sitting around waiting for God to tell them which underwear to put on every day when he grew up with heavy Quaker influences.
I grew up with a lot of charismatic navel gazing in my circle and it was the Calvinists who led me to the near identical conclusions RM had come to here. I am not a Calvinist myself, but I appreciate that teaching in particular.

Actually, Rich did specify. "Be who God made you to be." He also specifies that we are not supposed to lie down in our sin and stay in that broken state. Rich was very serious about following the Bible. Which is why he mentioned, holiness as a key.
Rich would indeed love Homosexuals, and they would love Him. However, he would also be honest with them about their need to change and live in the pattern defined by the bible.
