Yeah but guys the 600,000 doesnt just go to making the car faster, alot of that money goes to keeping the car light but making super durable to handle 6ft jumps and the torture of rally racing without breaking parts.
It’s expensive because it’s all custom work done by just a few engineers and the time that goes into development and the constant testing and improving is immense. I bet it changes every time they drive it. That dog box transmission sounds so good!
600k isn't buying you speed, its buying you a car that can jump 50 meters without even breaking a sweat. Try that in an OEM STi, you will be collecting the remnants of the car into a bin, if you survive.
hahaha well said, plus the price of the WRC includes development cost as they are built and tested, modified and tested again. It takes many, many months for a group of engineers and drivers to come up (from scratch) with what we are watching above. They're all hand built, using exotic materials, I mean comparing these is pointless:)
+wisniorek I agree with all that you've said except for the last statement. Comparing these is NOT pointless! The comparison shown, while not the BEST one possible (on a rally stage), shows that the racing/rally car is far faster in many ways to the street version. It is sometimes hard for the average person to grasp how big of a difference there is without this type of comparison.
I wonder if you spent money on remapping, coilovers and tyres how close the sti could get maybe shave a few seconds. but 8 seconds is a life time in wrc.
+Rakhin Amin You're absolutely correct! You're just not going to beat a purpose-built racing/rally car when it is in it's element at speed with a stock vehicle. In one sense, what is amazing is that for it's price that the street WRX/STi is as good as it is, and will last many years with only a minimum of maintenance.
And this is 8 seconds on tarmac...let's add rocks and dirt and mud and see if the stock Subaru can even finish a stage. ....LOVE that black STi though ♥️
8 seconds is not that big of a difference really considering the sequential shifts and tires alone are probably worth a good 3 seconds. But put the cars on a narrow tarmac stage with tight hair pins and lots of undulations and I bet after 1 min 30, the STi is a lot more than 8 seconds back. Then put the cars on gravel, and I bet the STi DNF's. The conditions where a WRC car shines are not shown in the video.
dude 8 seconds is a lot. like a lot. in racing if your like .1 faster than the other guys, your going to be seriously fast. after 60 laps what 8 seconds. thats 8 minutes your behind. you could take a pit stop and go take a dump and still win.
I'm not saying 8 seconds isn't huge. I'm saying when you consider it's a tarmac setup full out race WRC car vs a 100% bone stock WRX, 8 seconds is closer than many (including myself) would expect. With slicks and boost, the WRX could likely go upwards of 3-4 seconds faster. But I also mentioned that on a track/road that is more like a traditional rally stage, the gap would surely be a lot larger than 8 seconds after just 1:30 in time.
8 seconds is a lifetime in racing. I watch racing every weekend. You know nothing. If there are 50 laps in an F1 race, 8 seconds x 50 laps = almost 7 minutes!
You guys are completely missing the point. Say for example you drove your car to the end of your driveway and you were 8 seconds faster than a guy on a donkey. Will you argue how much quicker your motorized vehicle is over a mammal, that 8 seconds is huge because you compared it to the unrelated Formula 1 race you watched it recently? You may just say that given the donkey is an animal and not a machine, that the 8 seconds is really not as big of a difference as you may have originally imagined it to be. If you haven't figured it out, the bone stock STi is the donkey in this video.
So, it was clearly a pretty short track and it was a road track. We don't know if this particular rally car was set up for road or dirt at the time which can make a huge difference in race times. Remember that this short course was only 1:30 min. A typical course will be much longer than that so that 8 seconds turns into 16 and so on. But again, your paying for stronger components and durability and less weight. 630k still seems like quite a bit more than I was expecting. The new WRC cars must be pretty expensive. Clearly the money goes into something or the car manufacturer wouldn't be spending that much.
geoff its more about the gearing not the power in this case. The stock car is geared to stay in low rpms on the freeway to get good gas mileage while the other is geared to be fast.
The Horsepower isn't too different, the anti lag keeps the Wrc car in the power band and the Wrc car makes huge torque compared to the road car, also the gearing like the other guy said.
@@dirceum8224 In a sense. But if you get everything done properly, starting from a better marketing work than the absolute shit stuff done by the official WRC promoters, I'm sure it would be as healthy as never before. Just look here at those numbers in the views counter: ruclips.net/video/0NhSX1Y8sLQ/видео.html. No other motorsport category, no matter its time, is/was able to achieve such a thing - and that's just one example among lots. And if you change a little bit the cars to make them quite harder to control (they're already hard to drive), similar to the Group B combination of control/driving, then we're sorted.
depends on the circuit :) ifit has lots of bends and sudden change of speed then the wrc is much faster, because that is what it is solely built for :) but lets not forget, the STI isn't a slow car either, so it makes sense. and maybe he did take it a bit easier in the race car
Subarus are really reliable like every japanese car,if you know how to "treat" them, except of course the EJ25 and the diesel engines those are not too reliable...

I was watching a WRC vid of this car and one of those Subaru tuner guys said it was gay because it was automatic. He didn't even know that the WRC was Subarus race car, he thought is was built by a random guy, what a arse. His WRX wouldn't even go offroad cause his crappy lip will break off on the dirt for being too low. I own a Tuner Lancer that use to be my brothers but I want to build a WRC Replica WRX one day.
Lancer Mafia not everyone wants a rally car out of their rally inspired vehicle... Though on another level, your mate should think before he talks a little more
The sti is not rally. The wrx is. The sti has the 2.5 where the wrx only has a 2.0 and that's the engine they use for rally because 2.0 is the limit for rally rules.
630.000 euros are more like 63.000 euros, cause your sponsors pays almost 80% of the car. Plus that, is a team, not for collin mcrae only. Still, my favorite race car ever made.
Everything on WRC car is built manually by hand, by engineers. So yes, $650k is a bargain for what you get. A regular STi does 0-60 in 5 seconds, but maybe once or twice per day, any more and you will probably damage something. WRC car can go 0-60 in 3 seconds, as needed on demand. Everything on the WRC car is custom built for massive stress and metal fatigue. If you did stress a regular STi the way they stress WRC car, STi wouldnt last 300 miles.
The rally car isn't a modded street car, it's a purpose built race car with almost nothing in common with the STi. there is no comparison and this fails to properly make the point. It's supercar fast while on gravel and dirt. "it has a standard boxer engine" bullshit - it has a standard block (possible sleeved or strengthened), and almost everything else is improved/uprated.
+Benny Chan What you think every cent of that goes straight to the engine? There's a lot more development and research required for WRC cars then you think. Not only do these cars have to go fast, but they have to be able to handle the abuse of a driver trashing it around on a stage over and over and over again. Plus it's not like these are in mass production, each competent in these cars are usually custom made to order. Let's not forget the image Subaru has in the rally community, they've obviously been doing it right for a loooong time so it's not like you're one to talk.

It's actually about 5 seconds a minute quicker if you do the maths, so on a 5 minute rally stage that's already 25 seconds quicker.
8 seconds is a lot in rally. Plus, the car is improved in every way. It would absolutely destroy the regular Subaru on any course
