I'm a guitarist mostly, but have been fascinated with Dino's drumming since I saw the Young Rascals do "Good Lovin'" on TV. He danced while playing the drums, and was superhumanly fast with those sticks. He was a very interesting guy. His passing has affected me more than most of my favorite musicians when they pass. Well I'm rambling on... RIP Dino, thanks for the thrills. Lots of people love you.

Completely gutted. Dino was one of the most amazing drummers to emerge from that era. R.I.P.

When the best drummers of the 1960's are discussed, the discussion seems to always be limited to Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Ringo Starr, John Bonham and Mitch Mitchell (sorry, if I've forgotten the one or other commonly-discussed drummer, e.g., Charlie Watts). But they seldom talk about Dino Danelli who was an exceptionally great drummer. Just listen to 'Good Lovin;' that's not a typical rock drum pattern he's playing. Its something greater. Dino deserves more praise as one of the very, very best rock/pop/white R&B/whatever-you-want-to-call-it drummers!

When I was 15 I was staying with friends of mine playing at a club near by, the Vagrants. I walked into the Barge where the Rascals were planning for most of the summer. I sat down at the bar which was 15 feet from the stage the group was on a break, when they came back on stage they opened the set with a slowed down version of ‘come see about me’ by the supremes. Within 5 seconds I was in a trance from the guy before his drum kit. Almost every day of my life I would play a Video of a live Rascals performance .I’m 73 and have no idols anymore, except One.
Rest in peace you magical person who came from heaven. Now jam with Buddy Rich and all the great drummers who have passed on.

From the age of about 15-19 I was in a band that did a lot of Rascals covers. Our drummer was both a huge fan of Dino and Buddy Rich. He played like a man possessed and made me a long time fan of both drummers as well. We also had the pleasure of playing a show with them at Bambi’s in Newport, RI and meeting them on the Jamestown Ferry after the show. A quiet gentleman offstage but a dynamo behind the drums ! He will be sorely missed.

I was playing in a garage band in 1966 and had the opportunity to see the Young Rascals when they were on tour with Dick Clark's "Where the Action Is" tour. What an inspiration. They sounded much better in person than on vinyl and they always sounded great on vinyl. I bought all of the albums and still have them.....in my daughter's possession for safekeeping after I'm gone.
Dino wrote a book filled with his interviews with jazz drummers. Great book.

Rest in peace brother drummer. First time I saw you play was on the Ed Sullivan show and I was really impressed with your style and showman ship, with the cymbal grabs and stick spinning and the way you'd stand up and play the bass drum. I will never forget you. Rest in peace brother!

I loved Dino SO much. The Rascals were the soundtrack of my teenage years, and I have always followed them. I saw the original lineup with Felix, Eddie, Gene and Dino several times, both “new” versions of the Rascals, their reunion concert in 1988 and Once Upon A Dream twice. Dino was the most fascinating drummer I’ve ever seen, couldn’t take my eyes off of him. Rest in eternal peace, beautiful man. You will be so missed (Shelley)

Roger, your being very modest. You were also a great drummer. Next to the Rascals, you guys the the second best cover in the east coast .
      Maybe the country,
Your wonderful backbeat was the heart of the group, (plus Larry’s bass). I’ll cover more memories another time {a little inside baseball of 1964-66) so to speak.

I grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee and remember Ronnie Speeks coming through town periodically to play in campus clubs. He had a great drummer, which I always noticed, being a drummer myself. I never thought that could have been Dino. I loved Dino's drumming with the Rascals. Clean, tight, good showmanship.

During the summer of '65 I played in a group call 'The Hodads" at a place called 'The Drift Inn'. The venue was just down Dune Rd. from 'The Barge'. All summer long I heard about 'The Young Rascals' and how great they were. One night they came in to check us out. My bandmates said 'Hey, that's The Young Rascals sitting over there! At the time, it didn't mean much to me. Came Labor Day and I decided to check them out for myself. I WAS ABSOULTELY BLOWN AWAY! LIKE, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The standout? Dino of course!
Any truth to the story that he became one of Jehovah's Witnesses?
