Girl meets boy was the book that made me fall in love with Ali Smith's work ! I bought it while visiting Oxford during the summer. I have since read the Quartet and cried reading the last pages of the fourth book. She's so smart. Sula was also one of my favorite read and I love short stories and Carver's collection is so good. I'm curious about a few other books you mentioned. I ordered Olivia Sudjić's essay, I still have her novel to read.
ali smith is really blowing my mind with her mastery of words-currently reading artful and loving it. sula is definitely still one of the best books i’ve read so far this year!
Today I finished A Summer Without Man and it went straight to my favorites shelf. And now I’m watching an older video I’d missed and find you as obsessed with Hutzveldt as I now am. ❤ This must mean something 😊
What a fab wrap up. That cover of Sleepless Nights was gorgeous. Totally agree with what you say about the beauty of the text in The God of Small Things. Girl Meets Boy is brilliant, remains my favourite Smith, or one of my top two. I really want to read Lucy. Fab wrap up!
Yes to reading Ocean Vuong and Toni Morrison! 100% agree! I read the Raymond Carver collection years ago so I don’t remember specifics but I do recall that I enjoyed the spare style as well.
Your vids have such a warm and calming presence 🥰 What a wonderful stack of books mentioned! I've been wanting to read Sexting the Cherry and The God of Small Things for a while now, happy to hear you talk about them!
that’s such a lovely thing to hear 😌🕊️ ahh you are in for a treat with sexing the cherry!! quite folky romp. TGSM is one of the most heartbreaking books i have ever read but its beauty is unbelievable x
our kween is back!!! it seems like you're having such a good reading year. very intrigued by What I loved and Cursed Bread (this has been making the rounds and my interest is piqued)!!! so so lovely to have done Sula with you, as i think it'll be in my top 10 for the year. you're such a thoughtful reader with incredible thoughts and ideas that helped me piece such a lovely work of art together. 💓
oh i would be so interested to hear your thoughts on cursed bread!! i can see sula making my top 10 already too! a gorgeous reading experience made all the more delicious via our discussion 🤍🌼
Yeey! Missed your videos 🤍 so much to add to my tbr now. I've only read "Beloved" by Toni Morrison and now I definitely want to read "Sula" as well. Also, yess, so beautiful to hear Ocean Vuong speak in the podcast you mentioned, and always, he's amazing.
The way you’ve spoken about all these, wow, I want to read them all! I’d never heard of Dunce and now I’m intrigued. I’ve being saying forever now that I need to read Ali Smith and I’m convinced to start with Girl Meets Boy from how you spoke of it and the sections you read! Oh and the essay collections by Siri Hustvedt and Thin Places by Jordan Kisner, they sound so incredible.
Girl Meets Boy sounds incredible! It's an Ali Smith I hadn't heard of and I definitely need to have that on my list. I had the same author revelation with Virginia Woolf this year. I had never read her and To The Lighthouse was transformative. And I still need to get to Morrison! Truly don't know what I'm waiting for!
This was amazing! I love your writing, so clear and beautiful. 🌟 Now, I have a copy both of Lucy and Sula and you just made me put them next in my reading ❤ Also, will try to read Ocean Vuong's Night Sky right now :) I love that we have such similar taste in books, so I always know that I'm going to like your recommendations! Thank you, come back more! Love,xx
Ahhh thank you so much ✨💞 I hope you love both of those books as much as I did! Sula especially did something to me. I’ll try my best to be back very soon 🕊️🌸
i've missed your ethereal presence so much... your detailed and in-depth analysis are so touching! thank you so much for this video, i listened to it while getting ready and it was like having a friend to chat with 🥹
You don't have to read the seasonal quartet necessarily in the order they were published. You can see references to the other books wherever you start.
yay! it's a rare and cherished Katie James video! 🖤
🥰
An hour long book video?! YAY
i swear i did not realise i was talking for this long 🫠 x
