the lonely city by laing was one of my favourite reads of 2021, i hope you're going to love it too! as you mentioned wojnarowicz, i would highly recommend his own memoir called "close to the knives". a really tough read, but it was phenomenal! i've never encountered writing that was so rightfully angry, but still managed to be so beautiful. i've also read the lispector, very good and very interesting as well! hope you have a great year of reading 🧡
I want to come and sit in your beautiful home and drink tea with you in 2023. The Stillest Day!!!!! I’m very interested in that Derek Jarman. Hugs Katie, loved this as always.
I read Housekeeping many many years ago, and I remember absolutely ADORING it without knowing much about it. I really hope you love it too, I've been meaning to reread it for a long time now. Her prose was beautiful!
I feel the same way about Morrison! I have one of her books on my TBR this year, I just have to start reading her work already. I also have Freedom by Maggie Nelson on my list. I started reading the Neapolitan quartet just before Christmas and I'm already on book 4! I really relate to what you said about that queasy feeling. It's a very close feeling, reading these novels..
Lovely list! Definitely have some overlap with books I’m going to prioritize reading this year! Loved Drive Your Plow over the Bones of Your Dead. So so good. Excited to hear your thoughts on Flights! Have not read that one yet.
Honestly the best list 🖤I likewise look forward to hopefully picking up many of these. I am also very looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Modern Nature and Flights! Flights is quite something and I remember really benefitting from reading a lecture she gave around the time of it's release (I believe), I shall have a look for it and send it your way. x
I’ve had The God of Small Things on my shelf for a while and so I’m looking forward to picking it up! Love this list :) I read a few last year and loved them. I look forward to hearing your perspective on them
Omg ♥️ so many bangers on here! And i wonder how I’d reread Emergency if I thought it was a novel lol 🙈🙈. Pretty much every book on here (that I haven’t read) is on my TBR too! I need to read more Laing, you’ve inspired me.
obviously I love this list (I think I've already commented such either on insta or WhatsApp or all of the above). heartily agree on Sula being a good Morrison starting point. (also, good children protagonists for part of the book, and definitely The Bluest Eye)
we read in the same way! i have had some books on my tbr for well over a year now because my brain just hasn't let me read them yet. trying to break out of that this year though :))
Amazing list. You have three books on there that I have loved deeply for more than thirty years: Housekeeping, Sula, and Sexing the Cherry. I’m eager to see what you say about the books.
Housekeeping reminded me of O Caledonia for the relationship between Janet and Lila in some way. Also the house being a character, all thing I know you loved. Also the language is so playful you will love. Let me know when the moments hits you to read Heti, I’ll drop whatever for you. 😘💜✨
killer list if i made one it’d have like 10 of the same ones minimum, a lot of these i have on my shelf and im just waiting for the mood reading spirit to enter my body haha
& a single man isnt all doom n gloom it’s pretty wry and clever but w sad undercurrents - just to recolor the mental image u might have since that prob affects the mood reading
it’s such a cheeky spirit, rarely works with me. always takes me by surprise. let me know if you are led by the spirit to any of these though - i’d love to know your thoughts ✨
The god of small things is beautiful. I read that years ago... One sad thing though, I could not enjoy and appreciate Burnt Sugar because I kept thinking and comparing it to this book. It's weird. And my brain could not help comparing it, when I knew they're two different books! =(
oh, that is a shame! it’s annoying when a book burrows into your brain in such a specific way that it can overtake the experience of others. BUT yes, TGST is stunning ✨
The God of Small Things yes great evocative prose even in the first couple of pages. You might like Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys tells the story of the mad woman in the attic from Jane Eyre with themes of colonialism, race, class, and patriarchy all with wonderful prose.

✨i can’t wait✨

Honestly the best list 🖤I likewise look forward to hopefully picking up many of these. I am also very looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Modern Nature and Flights! Flights is quite something and I remember really benefitting from reading a lecture she gave around the time of it's release (I believe), I shall have a look for it and send it your way. x
modern nature is one of the books on this list i’m most excited for, thanks to you! 🤍🦋
I’ve had The God of Small Things on my shelf for a while and so I’m looking forward to picking it up!

And I’m jealous you will get to experience Ferrante quarret for the first time ❤
if julie posts about it, i wanna read it 😌 let’s read laing together this year!! x
@@jameskatie I'd LOVE to! The Lonely City is also on my TBR :)
whenever you feel up for it, can’t wait to read Sula with you! will be patient with you ✨💌
i’m thinking it needs to happen soon. let’s start off february strong with some morrison magic ✨
@@jameskatie would love to start february with you ❣️

you are definitely encouraging this road of discovery 🕊️
The Bluest Eye broke me! Beyond stunning.
sexing the cherry is favorite novel, i think, it is just mind blowing, so beloved to me.
i can absolutely see why! i adored it x
a single man is honestly chefs kiss, isherwoods makes you feel everything with this one
excellent. i always want to feel ✨everything✨
Christopher Isherwood is on my list to get to this year as well! I cannot wait to see Aftersun, it comes out in Feb here!
aftersun will be so worth the wait for you!! devastating and beautiful 💞
we read in the same way! i have had some books on my tbr for well over a year now because my brain just hasn't let me read them yet. trying to break out of that this year though :))
it can be so frustrating, right? but i also love and trust my brain for knowing what i am in the mood for 😌🙏🏻 mood reading is the best reading x

this is the best kind of endorsement - enduring love 💌
@@jameskatie JW’s The Passion is even more of a favorite.
I have it waiting on my shelf 😌

The God of Small Things is amazing, what a poetic and lyrical language.
the language is masterful!!!!

I think you will like The Wall. Don't worry, you can read it as a dystopian, but it is mainly a social commentary and a feminist read.
social commentary? feminist? sold x
