Before you said the Sula quote I knew exactly which one you were referring to; that line put into words exactly what I had felt my whole teenagehood. I love that book so much
"it's what my soul wants" definitely will be reading more of what my mere mortal soul wants. can't thank you enough for our buddy reads of Sula and The Seas. they are still books i think about, feel about. thank you for reminding me to pick up Close to the Knives! David, a voice gone too soon, too fast, and i love his rage and passion. he had a living that fought so hard to be heard and alive and i want so much of his passion in my life.
I discovered your channel recently and girl, you are magnetizing! I love your charisma, handling of words and we have quite similar bookish taste. "Strega" is one of my favorite books of recent years, I was immersed in its density and dreamlike atmosphere and I also like its feminist message. I deffinitely have to read "At the Edge of the Woods" and this Carver's short story collection. Thank you for the inspiration and quality time!
I read & really loved May Sarton's Plant Dreaming Deep, and I went & put Journal of a Solitude on my tbr. Can't wait to return to her timeless writing!
i read plant dreaming deep last year and also loved it but journal of a solitude had a deeper resonance with me for some reason! i think you will love it if you enjoyed plant dreaming deep 🤍🌹
oooo okay strega has been sitting on my shelves for far too long! will be bumping it & adding a few others you mentioned! one of my friends absolutely loves ‘what we talk about when we talk about love’ & i’m hoping to read it this year! i honestly prefer hearing how people felt about a book they read more so than the synopsis so this was lovely!
i promise you that strega deserves the bumping up 🙏🏻 and your friend obviously knows that what we talk about when we talk about love is an iconic collection of stories! i was shocked i hadn’t read it sooner tbh 💞 x
I loved listening to you speak about your favorites of 2023! One of my favorites of last year was The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff. It's such a quiet, thoughtful book - I think it's one you'd really enjoy too!
love yr description of the seas as feeling like it's falling apart in yr hands like water (also, most appropriate!) we have so many faves from the past few years in common! this is not surprising. still have to read strega on yr rec, and now I want to add at the edge of the woods to my list, too!
I was so happy to see you on my subs box, what a great video with fantastic recommendations. My favourite books from last year were The Rachel Incident and Bolla. Both very different and loved for different reasons - highly recommend them.
It's nice to see a new video from you :) my favorite books from last year were Modern Nature by Derek Jarman (beautiful counterpart to Close to the Knives, in a way), Drive your Plow over the Bones of the Dead (read because of you) and The Life of Plants by Emanuele Coccia.
ahh i always love when someone picks up drive your plow! so happy you enjoyed it. i’ve had that jarman on my list for a while. will hopefully get to it this year 🙏🏻🤍
was so happy to see this video pop up in my subscription box!! you have such chill vibes and immaculate taste. blue nights and journal of a solitude were on my 2023 faves list as well. i’m intrigued by east of eden and hearing you talk about it has only added to that!!
This is such a great list! And reminded me of a few that I finally need to get to this year. You've also convinced me to pick up The Colony, sounds so good!
Oh I was so happy to see this video pop up in my feed :) I love hearing about your favorites! So many of these are on my TBR. Pond is an absolute priority for me this year! I also credit you for putting Strega and Hustvedt’s essays on my radar, I’m looking forward to those as well.
Excellent video, Katie! I am adding a bunch of these to my list. I’m really interested in Housekeeping. So many people love it and I think I will too. I think my favorite book of the year was My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. I flew through it and the second book and I plan to read the last two books of the quartet soon. I hope 2024 is a great reading year for you!
hi katie! new(-ish) subscriber here and I just wanted to say that I'm so happy to see that you made a new video :) on a hot august day last summer I was researching books on youtube and found your summer reading recs video. I almost immediately downloaded "second place" to my e-reader and enjoyed it in the sun while my friends were swimming in the danube. that was a really lovely day with a great novel that then totally re-ignited my love for reading (I always liked to read but had been in a reading slump for a while at that time). upon the last months I started to watch lots of booktube (like the lovely people that you also mention in your videos a lot: nathansnook, bibliosophie, cj reads etc.) and I just wanted to say how cool and interesting you all are in this cozy corner of youtube! and also thank you for making me discover lots of great new literature and expanding my taste
thank you for sharing this with me 🤍 this makes me so happy! all i want from this channel is to share my love of books and hopefully others can then share in that love!! x
i just love hearing u talk about books, definitely taking some recommendations. here are some of my favorite books from 2023: torto arado by itamar vieira junior (title in english: crooked plow) uma tristeza infinita by antonio xerxenesky (title in english: an infinite sadness) rastros d'água by fabiane marques (i'm pretty sure there's no translation for this one) autobiography of red by anne carson heaven and hell by jón kalman stefánsson
thank you 🤍 oh, autobiography of red has been on my list for a long time, i really need to get to it. crooked plow and infinite sadness and brilliant names! i’m intrigued x
Nice list. The best books I read in 2023 were Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel and The Big Nowhere by James Ellroy. But I wanted to recommend you, if you haven't read it, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry because I read it in 2022 and I still think about it. It's gonna be one of the best books you'll ever read, I guarantee it.
also, agree with you that brandon taylor writes well about dancers (from my more limited experience) -- based on filthy animals and late americans, I have to assume he's hung out with some in his life!
just found your channel - love your thoughtful, careful passion for literature and our tastes are so similar.
@@megdrummond-wilson824 thank you! 🌸💞
You crossed my mind recently, so nice to have you back talking books
thank you! i promise i’ll be back again soon 🕊️✨

thank you so much for being here! ✨🤍
Can’t wait to add some of these to my TBR ❣️
i hope you enjoy them as much as i did 🤍✨
I picked up Strega on your recommendation and absolutely loved it. So eerie and beautifully written.
eerie is a good word for it! combined with the beauty of the writing it really does make for a skin crawling read at times x
love yr description of the seas as feeling like it's falling apart in yr hands like water (also, most appropriate!)

ohh, i feel like at the edge of the woods is very much your kind of book. it was such a random and perfect find! 🤍
I was so happy to see you on my subs box, what a great video with fantastic recommendations. My favourite books from last year were The Rachel Incident and Bolla. Both very different and loved for different reasons - highly recommend them.

I hope you have some great reads in 2024. Best wishes.
same to you! hopefully a brilliant year of reading 🙏🏻
I very much enjoy the way you describe the books…just a synopsis isn’t as compelling. I’ve added several to my long list🎉
thank you 💞 very happy that i’ve done a good enough job to get some books on your list!
also, agree with you that brandon taylor writes well about dancers (from my more limited experience) -- based on filthy animals and late americans, I have to assume he's hung out with some in his life!
right?? how does he do it?! i can feel the aches and the sweat haha.
