It's all about the alcohol making more money and about the drug companies making money that's why they don't want it legalised

The same drug companies that have killed how many people in the last 20 years? How many people did Purdue Pharma kill, how many hundreds of thousands? And they made how many billions in profit in doing so? And the chance of any Sackler family member ever being locked up behind bars for it?

Just for anyone considering this for future reference....During a 2 week vacation (June 4-19th 2024) to Bangkok, I brought the results of my cancer biopsy to a hospital and requested a prescription for medical cannabis, which was provided to me, EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT A RESIDENT OF THAILAND.. just so you know that residency isn't a requirement....keep this in mind in case they go back to MEDICAL ONLY....

I am a retired Biomedical Engineer who has seen it all in hospital and clinical settings...and you know which treatment is the worst? Dialysis....ongoing more than once a week to stay alive...the US now has thousands of dialysis clinics because the hospitals can't even scratch the surface of treatment needed in an alcoholic society...these people are not using cannabis...you know who else is not? The roughly 70% of domestic violence calls are directly related to alcohol...these people are not sitting around a table smoking a joint; they are DRINKING....nobody more hypocritical and unevolved than a person that drinks and talks about Marijuana as if it's the devil....

From my understanding, BJT Party has just increased their influence and bargaining power substantially after the new Senate Elections. The Bangkok Post is saying the Center of Power in Thailand has just moved to Buriram. It's going to be interesting.

I can't be positive about any of this in Thailand.
Something that is maybe interesting to note from America. When a particular politicians emails were made public, she was taking bribes from Big Alcohol and other interest groups to keep cannabis illegal. It isn't well-known due to the nature of the rest of her emails being more provocative at the time. It's not a big leap to assume that this happens in other countries as well.

I love that you make these vids. You are correct on almost all points but that might not be what matters.
If a Thai government polster asked almost any Thai person if they agreed with a government proposed policy, 80 percent would agree no matter what they really thought - unless the issue affected them personally such as confiscating their land for a new airport. Such a poll is meaningless.
Oh, if the state policy directly contradicted the ideas of Rama 9 or Rama 10 or the Buddha, the Thai person would have a heart attack trying not to answer.
There is some foundation for distrust of cannabis among the Thai middle class, and that is likely who was polled. But that should not be given much weight here.
Knowing people will be cautious about such evidence but any survey can make for useful propaganda. Hmmm.
    Thanks. Mike

Here we go again, convince enough people that a problem exists and government will act with impunity just like a couple of years ago. Leave things as they are. Just in case you haven't noticed, the sky hasn't fallen. (It was an acorn.)

Alcohol and tobacco produce all those negatives they try to list for cannabis. Would the "health" minister care to comment. I'm waiting..... crickets.

In science, it is called a paradigm shift. A new theory, in spite of being demonstrably better, has to defeat the entrenched authority of those who support the old idea whether for tradition or self interest. Cannabis is clearly safer than alcohol and less expensive to the Thai people (20 billion baht in psychiatric costs, even if true, pales to the economic costs of alcohol abuse). Yet, there are many entrenched authorities with economic or influence connections who would lose out if cannabis were to compete with alcohol.

Ben: As a professional economist, I can say that MOST samples of 10,000 are large enough that the law of big numbers is relevant; i.e., the results are very likely to be reliable whoever the surveyor is. Having said that, sampling does matter. And as me mum said, paraphrasing Harry Truman in most likelihood: there are big lies, little lies, and then statistics. As a resident of Thai myself, I too understand that alcohol is a much bigger problem than weed, But as an economist, I think making ANY substance illegal is just handing profits to criminals, which is an inferior option to capturing tax revenue and regulating (by competent bureaucrats).
FYI my very limited sample of Thai friends suggests the do want many of the weed shops closed in Phuket and upcountry. In Bkk, my Thai friends don't care so much. So I do think some more sensible "bureaucratic regulation" (now very irresponsibly outlawed by SCOTUS in the US last week, for example) is required. Anutin's action has led to a bureaucratic nightmare in this regard, similar to the SCOTUS terror in the US. Bureaucrats, who I have worked with in the USA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and many other ASEAN economies are generally very responsible underpaid "public servants" in the true sense of the word.
And tobacco, alcohol, and weed are very similar in that there is high demand (i.e., they will be provided whether legal or not) but use has some negative social aspects that most Thais or other nationals (as I understand Thai public opinion) want limited a bit. Your plea for a clear legal framework is highly appreciated in this respect. Eric

    Medical Authority?
    That's not a real thing.
Not to mention, the use of the word "Authority" is offensive and should never be used. It fringes on a human rights violation.

Overall its not my business as an expat living here, but i kinda hope it does get recriminalized. In america, the result was generations of stoners living at home playing video games. It wasnt quick impact bad like crack, but a slow impact to generations, and an entire culture.
