Seems you could maintain the minimum amount required in a Thai bank and use your pension as income. But keep a larger account in your home country and use a home country based bank credit/debit card to make most of your non-essential purchases (travel, electronics, entertainment, etc). There's probably more to it than this if you have additional income that you don't want reported to Thai authorities.

I’d frankly be surprised if Thailand never started reviewing tax compliance as part of the visa renewal process. They’ve already made it clear that they want to broaden the tax base in a way that ensures coverage of all resident aliens. Checking for tax compliance at visa renewal is a logical step whether or not we like it.

What a pain the ass....I lived, worked in Thailand off and on from 2000-2012 as a younger man. Now aproaching retirement I would rather eat glass than park any money in this country and have to read tea leaves and eventually drink it. .

This whole thing at the immigration office collecting bank information is a overreach, this time when I did the Ret Visa renewal they wanted 1yr of statements from the bank, a letter from the the bank, copies of my bank book updated on last day every page signed, I am surprised they did not ask for my Pin and Card as well. There are no safeguards on your info and none of the documents where returned to me when finished. Any employee at the office has enough information to hack the account, sell the information or demand a bribe down the road. This is a issue that needs to be addressed first.

It seems to be heading that way. We shall see if sense will prevail. Just spent $30k on an elite visa earlier this year. Looks like it's time to go somewhere else that values my $ and the near 6 ($A) figures I spend every year here. I will get the value out of my elite visa for as long as I can, once they start asking me to pay tax I'll be gone.

Since president Dementia opened the borders this country can no longer sustain anyone.. The "asylum seekers" have pretty much bled the system dry to the point that they're putting our Social Security benefits in jeopardy for those of us who actually worked our whole lives so we could retire with a little dignity. The new taxation will create a mass exodus of expats to elsewhere - that's a guarantee. Why would they pay tax to two countries? Who in their right mind would want that beast of burden?

Ben, my question is. I have 800,000. Baht in a Thai Bank account to keep a Retirement Visa. If they decide to Tax it. It now drops below the 800,000. Baht. Do I no longer qualify for the Retirement Visa? Your thoughts please.

It is really a bit strange what the Thai Government is trying to achieve. On one hand, they are trying to attract more investment through expats, then on the other hand they toy with taxing expats to the extent many are looking at alternate countries, especially retirees. There are very conflicting ideologies at play here and the government does not seem to have a holistic approach at all. There seems little point in attempting to raise taxes if the very target of the taxation leaves the country and takes their money with them. Surely, the spending from the expat community is a decent contributor to the income of the Kingdom and the government would not want to jeopardise that?

Ben: As a professional economist, I can say that MOST samples of 10,000 are large enough that the law of big numbers is relevant; i.e., the results are very likely to be reliable whoever the surveyor is. Having said that, sampling does matter. And as me mum said, paraphrasing Harry Truman in most likelihood: there are big lies, little lies, and then statistics. As a resident of Thai myself, I too understand that alcohol is a much bigger problem than weed, But as an economist, I think making ANY substance illegal is just handing profits to criminals, which is an inferior option to capturing tax revenue and regulating (by competent bureaucrats). FYI my very limited sample of Thai friends suggests the do want many of the weed shops closed in Phuket and upcountry. In Bkk, my Thai friends don't care so much. So I do think some more sensible "bureaucratic regulation" (now very irresponsibly outlawed by SCOTUS in the US last week, for example) is required. Anutin's action has led to a bureaucratic nightmare in this regard, similar to the SCOTUS terror in the US. Bureaucrats, who I have worked with in the USA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and many other ASEAN economies are generally very responsible underpaid "public servants" in the true sense of the word. And tobacco, alcohol, and weed are very similar in that there is high demand (i.e., they will be provided whether legal or not) but use has some negative social aspects that most Thais or other nationals (as I understand Thai public opinion) want limited a bit. Of course it can be about taxation tomorrow, we maybe have to show R.O 21, Income Tax Payment Certificate, in the future. Your Region tax office can give you this R.O 21 and also 22 after declaring your taxation. Region offices are 12, Bangkok has 3, Chonburi, Korat, Udon Thani, Chiang Mai++.

I don’t see any benefit in increasing the foreign condo ownership quota at the moment. With the proposed 35% worldwide taxation on the horizon, I’d expect to see accompanying benefits similar to what other countries provide, such as passports, permanent residency, free education, healthcare, retirement benefits, and the ability to own land in a foreign name. I deeply love Thailand, and that’s why I’ve invested so much here. However, without these benefits, the upcoming taxation changes make it hard to justify continuing to invest and stay. As a result, I am selling my properties and preparing to leave if the worldwide tax is officially announced. It’s important to consider the needs and contributions of those who genuinely want to make Thailand their home.
