ALERT: Intense Scrutiny Of Foreigners In Thai Travel Industry?
The more I look into moving here, the more the process seems very Russian. The want to keep expats under a microscope. Most European countries are much simpler to deal with.
In science, it is called a paradigm shift. A new theory, in spite of being demonstrably better, has to defeat the entrenched authority of those who support the old idea whether for tradition or self interest. Cannabis is clearly safer than alcohol and less expensive to the Thai people (20 billion baht in psychiatric costs, even if true, pales to the economic costs of alcohol abuse). Yet, there are many entrenched authorities with economic or influence connections who would lose out if cannabis were to compete with alcohol.
As the title of this video suggests?
Bitcoin fixes all this. If they get stupid there are plenty of other countries. Don't worry about it until it's an actual problem. Yet another reason to never buy a condo here. Remember we are guests here, and it will never be more than that. You can pretend to "go native", but you'll ALWAYS be falang.
Seems you could maintain the minimum amount required in a Thai bank and use your pension as income. But keep a larger account in your home country and use a home country based bank credit/debit card to make most of your non-essential purchases (travel, electronics, entertainment, etc). There's probably more to it than this if you have additional income that you don't want reported to Thai authorities.
Yes this pretty much. But at least for the US, money in the bank is not nearly as safe as it used to be. Gold and Bitcoin are the way forward imo.
The communist countries are looking better and better
If Thailand's tourism industry doesn't get back to pre-pandemic numbers then these new tax laws will definitely go ahead because that's how the Thai government is planning to make money to make up for all the money it's lost in tourism. All good things come to an end and the pandemic and Covid - 19 continues to disrupt peoples lives and dreams but if you truly loveThailand like you think you do then you shouldn't have a problem paying taxes in Thailand as long as its fair.
Well said mate

All these changes and revisions are about what they need to tax crypto. Crypto lives outside the banking system and enables capital flight. Significant tax rises in, say the UK, will result in some who can fleeing. Crypto is how exit taxes and worldwide taxing of the individual will be confronted. Thailand is completely in bed with the WEF. If you haven't already bought some Bitcoin, you're going to wish you had. I doubt it'll be years out, either. The infrastructure is built. Blockchain stops fraud, including tax fraud.
If by "crypto" you mean Bitcoin, then I agree...all the rest is shitcoins. Now, I make profits with shitcoins, but the whole point of shitcoins is to get more Bitcoin. That's literally the whole game. Use DEX's to avoid taxes, as CEX's are roach motels for government and their tax schemes.
I just watched a video from Parallel systems 'Fink Reveals the Endgame' and it fits in nicely with Bitcoin and tokenization.
Your constant hysterical defense of the drug, cannabis; leads me to believe you have a financial interest in selling drugs to the populous. You live in a Buddhist country. I suggest you study the precepts of Buddhism.
What a hassel ? Everything is not simple anymore
I’d frankly be surprised if Thailand never started reviewing tax compliance as part of the visa renewal process. They’ve already made it clear that they want to broaden the tax base in a way that ensures coverage of all resident aliens. Checking for tax compliance at visa renewal is a logical step whether or not we like it.
FAKENEWS 😂😂😂
This is not news, its a STRATEGY video....how you plan and think in Thailand is extremely important.
You want me to buy a condo in FQ but will deny me voting rights. - off!!!
Welcome to the new world order
What a pain the ass....I lived, worked in Thailand off and on from 2000-2012 as a younger man. Now aproaching retirement I would rather eat glass than park any money in this country and have to read tea leaves and eventually drink it. .
For the quality of life I get here in Thailand for just filling out a few papers worth it for me
@@jackskellington9195 Sure, it's great right now, but things change. This video is about things potentially coming in the future. And its great that Ben is keeping us informed. For instance, with things here so sketchy does it make sense to pack up everything you own and ship it all to Thailand? Not really. I still maintain a storage unit in my "home" (not really anymore) country, for this exact reason. Foreigner status has ALWAYS been sketchy in the kingdom though, so this is nothing new. It's more about keeping the correct perspective on our status here, as MANY decisions follow from this core understanding,.
@@genestone4951 If you are awake to what's happening in the world, you will know that you have nowhere to escape what is coming and believe me, the West is going to be hit far worse than in SE Asia. The only thing that can stop what is happening is for people to wake up and smell the roses. You will own nothing and be happy!
This whole thing at the immigration office collecting bank information is a overreach, this time when I did the Ret Visa renewal they wanted 1yr of statements from the bank, a letter from the the bank, copies of my bank book updated on last day every page signed, I am surprised they did not ask for my Pin and Card as well. There are no safeguards on your info and none of the documents where returned to me when finished. Any employee at the office has enough information to hack the account, sell the information or demand a bribe down the road. This is a issue that needs to be addressed first.
All governments and Financial institutions Have all information About everyone There are no guarantees against hacking Welcome to the internet
Blame America banking system and taxation, making all other countries having to submit this information
The Bangkok immigration wanted 2 years bank statements from me . I couldn’t get it done there , I had to get it done somewhere esle. A complete waste of time and huge stress
@@roybishop8874 every province and immigration office interpretation of laws and does things just a little differently My immigration they only look at my bank book. See that I signed my paperwork stamp and file while I’m sitting there in and out in 15 minutes. And that every 90 days and yearly visa renew I’m retired and this is one of the very few things I HAVE to do Always pleasant and helpful
Hua Hin immigration office has always required a 1 year statement..which if you use Bangkok Bank they have to get it from the main office and it takes 5 business days ( sometimes a week) .
It seems to be heading that way. We shall see if sense will prevail. Just spent $30k on an elite visa earlier this year. Looks like it's time to go somewhere else that values my $ and the near 6 ($A) figures I spend every year here. I will get the value out of my elite visa for as long as I can, once they start asking me to pay tax I'll be gone.
Most other countries will be doing similar things sooner or later, so good luck with your new home in Antartica 😂
Then your on your way or? As far as I inderstood they are already asking to pay tax
@@susanzimmerli5178 It looks to me like filing that first tax form will be the mistake that people make. Never file, and you wont be on the tax radar.
Since president Dementia opened the borders this country can no longer sustain anyone.. The "asylum seekers" have pretty much bled the system dry to the point that they're putting our Social Security benefits in jeopardy for those of us who actually worked our whole lives so we could retire with a little dignity. Here in the US it's not at all uncommon to see homeless veterans and other American citizens begging on the and actually living in the streets.
The new taxation will create a mass exodus of expats to elsewhere - that's a guarantee. Why would they pay tax to two countries? Who in their right mind would want that beast of burden?
It is normal to declare and pay tax if you stay long enough in another country. Why is it difficult to understand this?
Why should you have to pay two taxes? I don‘t pay any tax in my home country after I moved to Thailand.
@@susanzimmerli5178 It is normal to pay tax in your home country during the tax year, after every tax year you pay tax if you are, or have been a tax resident, it is always like that. Your DTA will tell you how to solve this problem. You have to find out which country is entitle to the tax, it is explained in the tax agreement.
Take off the blinders Mr. H. Kids DO get their hands on weed. I was a junior in high school when I started smoking that crap. I was taking all college courses and was well on my way to college. Then I discovered weed and ended up dropping out of school in my senior year. I have never stopped regretting smoking that garbage. I'm 68 years old now and retired and have never made much more than $10 an hour my whole life., YES cannabis makes you STUPID!!

@@jackskellington9195yes, a 2 tiered system
@@jackskellington9195 Bro, the one year retirement Visa is basically a tourist Visa that last for one year and you pay for the privilege to have it, saying this tourism is 60% (guessing)of the economy so a lot of the money that is spent here is already going towards the things you mentioned. I can assure you that taxing the retired people even more will not help any of the above mentioned topics it will just create more corruption, enough will never be enough I'm 100% sure about this (I would say this about any county not just Thailand), also I pay for the infrastructure in my home country that I don't use but I would never ask a Thai tourist to fill out a tax form and start dealing with the IRS just because there using the in place infrastructure, the expatriate community is so small that there use of these services are minimal and already paid for as a collective through fees and other taxes (VAT) etc... you have a very naive view of the world. If I was allowed work or make money here in Thailand I would be happy to pay my fair share on my earnings but it is against the law for tourist/retired people to work in Thailand. I could go on but I won't.
I would say there is a better than average chance that things will move in this direction. It seems like all of the groundwork is currently being laid...
Please let us all know if you hear anything about the 2 month visa exemption for the USA that is suppose to be in the works.
Not just USA, supposedly dozens of countries ghat already qualify for visa exemptions.
Ben, my question is. I have 800,000. Baht in a Thai Bank account to keep a Retirement Visa. If they decide to Tax it. It now drops below the 800,000. Baht. Do I no longer qualify for the Retirement Visa? Your thoughts please.
😂
Since you won't be a tax resident at that point, the money is not taxable. It will only apply to money brought into the country after you become a tax resident.
@@Tugela60 Thanks for the info.
Keep more than 800.000 on the account. If there is a fee or something.
Keep in mind that the Thai bank account should be interest bearing (at least mine is).
It is really a bit strange what the Thai Government is trying to achieve. On one hand, they are trying to attract more investment through expats, then on the other hand they toy with taxing expats to the extent many are looking at alternate countries, especially retirees. There are very conflicting ideologies at play here and the government does not seem to have a holistic approach at all. There seems little point in attempting to raise taxes if the very target of the taxation leaves the country and takes their money with them. Surely, the spending from the expat community is a decent contributor to the income of the Kingdom and the government would not want to jeopardise that?
If we pay taxes in Thailand do we get any benefits from this

Ben: As a professional economist, I can say that MOST samples of 10,000 are large enough that the law of big numbers is relevant; i.e., the results are very likely to be reliable whoever the surveyor is. Having said that, sampling does matter. And as me mum said, paraphrasing Harry Truman in most likelihood: there are big lies, little lies, and then statistics. As a resident of Thai myself, I too understand that alcohol is a much bigger problem than weed, But as an economist, I think making ANY substance illegal is just handing profits to criminals, which is an inferior option to capturing tax revenue and regulating (by competent bureaucrats). FYI my very limited sample of Thai friends suggests the do want many of the weed shops closed in Phuket and upcountry. In Bkk, my Thai friends don't care so much. So I do think some more sensible "bureaucratic regulation" (now very irresponsibly outlawed by SCOTUS in the US last week, for example) is required. Anutin's action has led to a bureaucratic nightmare in this regard, similar to the SCOTUS terror in the US. Bureaucrats, who I have worked with in the USA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and many other ASEAN economies are generally very responsible underpaid "public servants" in the true sense of the word. And tobacco, alcohol, and weed are very similar in that there is high demand (i.e., they will be provided whether legal or not) but use has some negative social aspects that most Thais or other nationals (as I understand Thai public opinion) want limited a bit. Your plea for a clear legal framework is highly appreciated in this respect. Eric
Of course it can be about taxation tomorrow, we maybe have to show R.O 21, Income Tax Payment Certificate, in the future. Your Region tax office can give you this R.O 21 and also 22 after declaring your taxation. Region offices are 12, Bangkok has 3, Chonburi, Korat, Udon Thani, Chiang Mai++.
WRT the income tax issue…the uncertainty and potential compliance issues could be worse than the actual tax…all of this feels penny wise and pound foolish…driveway expat inflows to get a few income tax crumbs.
@@DogRedful Only read your DTA and find out how to plan your taxation in the best way for 2024. Do not put your head in the sand ;)
@DogRedful You will have to do similar things no matter where you live if you derive income from offshore. Most countries are harmonizing their tax structures so they can weed out tax evaders.
@@Tugela60 I’m an American citizen with a Thai wife/fullfilling family obligations for a couple more years before it’ll be possible to move full time to our Thai home. Regardless of where I live, have to file more complex than average American returns on world income…the uncertainty/complexity/cost of stacking Thai tax compliance on top of an already complex situation has me watchful/considering spending less than 180 day per year on Thailand. For the prospect of collecting some income tax…a small village could be losing @$70k or $80k of work/sales inflow.
This will continue to push prices out of Thai citizens reach. Look at the US, where half of the country is owned by the rest of the world. Such BS
As a US expat I am unable to use a Wise card in Thailand...but the Russians can??????
Alcohol and tobacco produce all those negatives they try to list for cannabis. Would the "health" minister care to comment. I'm waiting..... crickets.

@@kellgiggs6593 can’t agree more! It was HUGE mistake that I bought condos here. I’m struggling to sale everything asap and is impossible without huge losses
Why would anyone put up with such a ridiculous legal regime. Surely it's way safer just to rent?
I don’t see any benefit in increasing the foreign condo ownership quota at the moment. With the proposed 35% worldwide taxation on the horizon, I’d expect to see accompanying benefits similar to what other countries provide, such as passports, permanent residency, free education, healthcare, retirement benefits, and the ability to own land in a foreign name. I deeply love Thailand, and that’s why I’ve invested so much here. However, without these benefits, the upcoming taxation changes make it hard to justify continuing to invest and stay. As a result, I am selling my properties and preparing to leave if the worldwide tax is officially announced. It’s important to consider the needs and contributions of those who genuinely want to make Thailand their home.
I know it's just a short post by you, but I would advise you get professional advice. As I understand it, it is still taxed on a remittance basis. So it's only taxed if you bring the income into Thailand. Would it not be easy just to keep that income outside TH and avoid tax?
@@joepaluka9031 Thank you 🙏. I’m referring to the “upcoming” worldwide income tax. In this case, regardless of whether you remit the income to Thailand or not, you will need to declare it and pay tax. Unless you leave Thailand or stay less than 180 days, as I’m planning to do. I’m done with the daily surprises and headaches. I love Thailand deeply, but this is my reason for leaving. I’m already preparing by selling what I - very mistakenly - bought while living here.

It is being 'shoved' through because big alcohol pays too well. All the Governments statistics are lies. The truth is being buried and Thais are being lied to. ......Remember, no one voted for these leaders.
