Malaysia would have to be the best for a tourist visa: 90 day - no pay.
Cambodia would have to be the best for a retirement visa. There are few rules.

Ben, You have only mentioned the entry.
Two countries that are far easier and better than Thailand for retirement in Southeast Asia are the Philippines and Cambodia.
There are other around the world also that are better than Thailand.

Although the initial tourist visas are free, longer term visas are not necessarily cheaper and involve far too much hasstle ... I bought a 12 month multiple entry tourist visa for India for $40 and issued within 12 hours after applying online.

I don't love to pay $25 dollars to get into Vietnam for a 90 day visa but really it's no hassel. but what I despise is paying 1000 baht to Thailand for a single re entry permit and 3800baht for multiple re entry permit.

This is true, but not cheaper or easier for a long term stay.

It's funny how the poorer countries have shorter tourism visas and fees compared to wealthier ones in Asia. Example Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan as an American I get 90 days exemption for free. You'd think poorer countries would want to encourage more tourism by making it easier and cheaper to visit.

Cambodia is a poor country. They need every Dollar they can get their hands on.

I can totally understand why promoting a country lived in would be priority, but as promoters of fairness, we should most definitely Not forget other neighbouring and equally appealing countries such as Malaysia and Philippines which offer Free entry for an equally high number of countries na khrap
