  • On August 6th, 2019, Delran Township in New Jersey had us out to provide lighting and sound for their annual National Night Out 2019 event!
    Gear list (all gear not owned by SLM is marked as rented):
    Lighting:
    8 - Chauvet Intimidator Spot 355 IRC
    4 - Chauvet Intimidator Wash 350 (rented)
    6 - Chauvet ColorBand PiX-M
    8 - ADJ UB 6h
    6 - Blizzard TOURNado WiMAX QZoom (rented)
    1 - Ultratec Radiance Hazer (rented)
    1 - Avolites Titan Mobile
    1 - Dell XPS15 9550
    Sound:
    8 - Martin Audio MLA Mini (rented)
    2 - Martin Audio MSX (rented) [not really in use, main hangs crossed at 90hz, but this is what powers the MLA Mini boxes]
    2 - Martin Audio CDD Live 15
    4 - Martin Audio CDD Live 12 (rented)
    1 - EV ETX 12p
    4 - Martin Audio WSXa
    1 - Powersoft K3 DSP
    1 - Behringer X32 Rack
    1 - Behringer X32 Full (rented)
    1 - Midas DL32 (rented)
    1 - Shure QLXD24/SM58
    x - Shure PSM300 & PA805 (rented) [wireless audio to delay towers]**
    Truss & Stage:
    1 - Stageline SL-100 (rented)
    2 - 2.5m F34 Global Truss (rented)
    x - Delay Towers (provided by Spirit Sound & light, I don't remember the exact equipment list)
    x - 2ch Cable Ramp (rented)
    **This ultimately was not a great solution for wireless audio because the IEM receivers are simply headphone jack outputs, and the gain was not able to be turned up high enough with the CDD Live 15s.

    I think you hit the nail on the head. Some people have no idea of what sound should be. Me personally when I'm at an event and I'm not right in the action. I don't want the audio to be so loud I can't have a conversation with someone standing next to me.

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 4 года назад

      The thing is that it still depends on the type of event. For this type of event, we didn't need crazy SPL, so we didn't need a crazy PA. But if it were an Excision show in the same space, we would need a PA at least 5 times the size of this one.

      there was a delay covering the vendor area which was super useful, but the one covering the outfield ended up being not useful. they said after they were still happy they got it, it's only purpose was because they thought more people would set up chairs over there to watch the fireworks

  • @KAYBE_CO
    @KAYBE_CO 4 года назад +2

    Martin certainly has some great sounding PA. The mla mini destoys 70% of the pa it's compared to. It also couples great with the wsxa. Are you thinking of extending the rig in the future? You could probably host some huge events with 8 boxes per side.

    • @dougberry4674
      @dougberry4674 4 года назад +1

      not with mla mini, but with wpm. we'd like to have 8 per side, and 8 wsxa. beyond that point, we're not sure if we'll get more, or start also stocking a larger PA. wpm still has it's limits, but its incredible value would be a huge asset for us in our local market first and foremost. ultimately, we will need a louder pa to meet some of the EDM riders that we want to be able to satisfy as we continue to grow as a company, but wpm is the perfect fit for all of our current events where we need something more than cdd live 15

    How did the wsxa's hold up against the line arrays.....
    Also im wondering when you had your etx18sp you used to run like 4 speakers and 2 of those. Did you run the speakers to balance the sound with your subs since the speakers would probably overpower the subs?
    Or you controlled them to sound balanced?

    • @dougberry4674
      @dougberry4674 4 года назад +1

      For this kind of genre, the wsxa matched nicely. For edm, we would probably want at least 8
      When we had etx, and ran 4 zlx per side, that was for coverage more than volume. In my opinion, most of the time, a single pair of ZLXs matched nicely with a single pair of etx 18sp
      Anyway, of course we ran them to be balanced. Why wouldn't we?

    • @alexberry3833

      A single K3 is fully capable of blowing all 4 subs, and these 4 subs are good for this size area for SPECIFICALLY this scenario, where we didn't need a lot of SPL and the music content was extremely dynamic. To cover the same space for a very loud EDM/bass music show, we would easily need 8-12 more subs.

    Actually the sound system is a lot louder than the fireworks in video

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 4 года назад

      It wasn't in person though. It sounds that way because the camera mic smooths out big transients which are exactly what fireworks are. I also had set the SPL to exactly what the event manager wanted, as I literally handed him my tablet and let him set the level to what he wanted.

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 4 года назад

      At 13:45 a big burst of fireworks goes off and you can hear how much louder it is than the music, as well as you can hear the music get quieter as this is a result of the camera's auto gain control for the mic reducing the gain to compensate for the loudness of the fireworks.

    • @JBG-AjaxzeMedia
      @JBG-AjaxzeMedia 4 года назад

      the reason the sound system is louder is because the fireworks are so loud that their audio just get muffled, like when the camera gets close to the subs the sound muffles cause of how loud the bass is so the camera mic effectively breaks. not literally but you get what I mean, the mic isn't high enough quality to just take in all the volume it can only cope to a certain extent before it muffles or cuts out etc.

      @@djlobb I disagree completely. MLA is the best sounding PA I've ever heard, line array or not. Vue al-12 and d&b J also sound fantastic. All 3 beat KV2 VHD5.0 IMO. @dougberry4674 4 года назад +2

      That's a valid opinion if you like, but unfortunately you would have to be pissed at the client who booked your band and budged for the production because they couldn't afford even 6 per side MLA mini, let alone compact
      We were exactly on target for spl and client expectations, so if you arrived frustrated as an engineer, I would simply tell you that we did what we were hired for, within budget, and that you'd have to ask the client to raise the budget next year
      Also, we had a fairly significant amount of headroom on the system when the bands engineer was mixing. The only thing we would benefit from having more/louder boxes would be a louder far field only, if the township even wants it louder out there, which I'm not totally sure they do
