    Some comments on the second rave, which was mine:
    1: It was very late in the night when people are tired
    2: Other activities were scheduled at the same time
    3: The crowd reaction is a clear indication that this school would enjoy a different style of music more than what I played!
    It's important to recognize areas where you can improve. This school definitely responds best to sing-along, poppier, EDM for their raves. However, we play the same rave sets at each school (in 2019, that was 4 schools) and broadly tailor the 1 or 2 rave sets for all 4 schools combined. We do this so that we can give each school an as similarly high-quality experience as possible, on purpose, including a rehearsed light show for the rave. The other 3 schools respond much stronger to this style of music, as opposed to Boling Springs. So, it's very evident that in the future we need to make special preparations for this schools raves, and we will!
    Our goal is to give each school an equally high-quality experience, which means, for Boiling Springs we need to do it differently than the other schools to make sure that their experience is just as great as the other schools.
    Also, some schools promote the rave sections of their Mini THONs differently than others. I don't know how Boiling Springs promotes the rave specifically, but even if a school doesn't promote it as a "real" EDM part of the night, **that is not a valid excuse for us to provide an experience that the students aren't enjoying**. However, I will say that accurate promoting of what is to be expected from that section of the night is super important. Boiling Springs is the only school we have done a Mini THON at where we have had students try to request Frank Ocean songs be played during the rave, which leads me to think the student body doesn't really understand what it means when it says "rave" on their schedule for the night. This is backed up further by noticing how the other schools respond to the raves when they are all expecting to hear an EDM heavy part of the night.

      @@DJSolstice I feel like you have the perspective that were trying to be mobile DJs and bring a mobile DJ experience. We're not. LMFAO
      We're hired, by the student committee, to bring an EDM experience to a Mini THON for their rave. We literally are not reading the crowd, or taking requests. We're putting on a show for the rave, as asked for my the client. It just so happens at this school, they need a different crafted experience than the others, like I said. LOL 🤣😂😅🙄🤔🤣🤣

    hey guys, again nice work on this gig. I also have a few hornloaded subs. I have tried some different setups whit my subs and 1 of my favourite is to lay 1 of your subs flat on its right side and the athor one on its left side and put them together with de air ports in the middel. this setup will increase your output by a lot. never done an accurate RTA meting but you can here the diference easaly. I would like your opinions on the martin subs in this configuration.

      @dougberry4674 5 лет назад +4

      the only reason we aren't doing a center block of 4 is for sightlines with the 2ft tall stage, we know that is best acoustically. beyond that, alex and i go back and forth deciding if we would get a better result with them on their sides, with two pairs of horn mouths coupled, but for this series of mini thons in 2019 we decided to deploy them in a line configuration, as you can see

    I am impressed. Better LJ than on Parookaville. Next step is Video walls 😉
    Why do not they use timecode? I think it's pretty hard to push the light manual over time. And yes, I'm a Serato/SoundSwitch User and DJ/LJ all allone :(

    • @Pigatto17
      @Pigatto17 5 лет назад

      timecode takes much more time to prepare and is quite limiting on the DJs. The least limiting way to do timecode would be with showkontrol but that would require CDJ's and it is still limiting on the DJ. If programmed right, its really not hard at all to manually run a light show like that. I can tell you I have alot more fun manually running light shows. Also if you only run timecode, you look like a bitch to other LD's that do it manually haha.

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 5 лет назад

      Operating a light show like this is relatively easy and a lot of fun, if you're musically gifted. Really it's just about getting muscle memory with the interface, aka the Titan Mobile in this case, and the programming.

      @scobia8321 5 лет назад

      @@alexberry3833 First I have to say I'm sorry for that question, I think you get under every RUclips video the same questions about lighting :D
      I think the discussion about timecode prepared light shows and manually pushing light is the same discussion as switching and automatic cars. In the future we drive electro cars and switching is obsolete. Same will be with light desks.
      And yes, manually is more fun :D (and even more if you can trigger sound samples with it)

    I'm not being funny here honestly - this is a serious question guys - have you ever run into an issue where somebody has had a photosensitive epilepsy episode, whether they knew about it before or they discovered it at one of your gigs? ... or is it really not that much of a risk? I sometimes use a good amount of FLASHY FLASHY in my lighting programs (nowhere near as much as you folks though!) & occasionally I pause to think.. hmm what if... ?
    Anyhoo.. great to see it's not *all* preprogrammed :D

    • @dougberry4674
      @dougberry4674 5 лет назад +2

      we have had maybe one or two events where we were told ahead of time to keep strobing either to a minimum, or none at all, usually for a specific attendee. when that happens we always talk with the event organizers about the severity of the attendee just so we have a full understanding of what we can and can not do, but then we always play it even safer than we are told to
      otherwise, if we are told nothing ahead of time, we have a section in our event contract which says, verbatim, "Lighting fixtures at the Event may strobe", and if they continue to tell us nothing in regards to strobing, and they sign the contract, we proceed. of course, if an attendee were to have an incident, we would stop any hint of strobing from that point on in the event unless the event organizers specifically tell us that it is okay to continue strobing. also, on the flip side, if we are told not to strobe ahead of time, we change that line to say "Lighting fixtures at the Event will not strobe"
      overall, that line of the contract is more just to protect us in a scenario where we were not warned ahead of time *and* someone were to try to put the liability on us if an incident were to occur. because of that line in our contract, it is the liability falls on the event host

    • @JustinHornsby
      @JustinHornsby 5 лет назад +1

      @@dougberry4674 That's really cool to know thanks Doug! That's essentially what my booking contracts say too :) In any case of anything untoward happening within my line of sight, up come the lights (gently) until it's been established it's safe to go on, or adjust the show accordingly. Responsible operating - you can't say you get that with sound2light ;-)

  • @dantonliam
    @dantonliam 5 лет назад

    Sick lighting guys! Is that all pre programmed or do you activate the different scenes?

    • @Pigatto17
      @Pigatto17 5 лет назад

      they don't pre program it nor trigger scenes. They busk the show.

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 5 лет назад +1

      Stuff like colors, movements, and intensity triggers are all separately pre-programmed. That stuff is then triggered in real time during the show. So like you'd select a color, then a movement, and then in order to get the lights to flash or produce any light you have to manually make that happen the entire time. Whether it's pressing a button that triggers a dimmer chase or group fixture flash like in the 19:22 clip, or moving a fader like at 8:53. That smooth fade up of the spots is me moving a fader in real time, controlling the intensity.

    Have you thought about having delays by front of house rather than blasting the front? May give better vocal feedback at the back.

    • @dougberry4674
      @dougberry4674 4 года назад

      We want it blasting at the front, the people who want it loud go to front row. Still, "blasting" has a negative connotation, so I want to be clear that it is not too loud. Clean audio vs distorted audio will sound like totally different volume levels at a given dB, so where you might only want 100dBa of distorted audio, like QSC, with clean audio you easily are wanting 110dBa, like Martin Audio
      A good way to say this is that 100dBa on QSC "sounds" loud, but 110dBa on Martin "is" loud. For example, even though QSC sounds loud at 100dB, it's really not that hard to talk over, but with Martin, when it starts to "sound" loud around 110-115dB, it's extremely difficult to talk over. At the risk of sounding cheesy, it's like you're surrounded / enveloped in the music. If you were to run QSC at 110-115db, your ears would be ringing for like a week. I have never gone home from one of our shows with Martin Audio with ringing ears, ever.
      Also, delays at FoH pointed forward is never a good idea for tons of acoustic reasons

    • @matthewwilliams6904
      @matthewwilliams6904 4 года назад

      Doug Berry yeah I have to agree with you there Doug, I’ve been using some very nice Meyer speakers and they are exceptionally clean. I think it’s really just different applications because I’ve assisted with some installs at a theatre auditorium where we used fill speakers away from the main arrays to keep volume output at front lower. I guess for EDM you do want it nice and loud at front. We did some stuff with line array and found if we had front fills we could actually turn down the rest of the array saving a few DB.

    I loved this lighting, it killed it. But there were too many times where it was fully dark. It almost seemed if that the DJ had a spot on him it would have been an easy solution to the problem. It just feels like the DJ is just generic and not this "holy guy" playing the music, The light shape in back I felt like if that was treated like the DJ's logo would have given him more of that presents as in most of the show you can't even see him. All that aside I'm sure if I was there I would have loved the crap out of it, I'm just being critical and throwing in my 2 cents to give you guys some feedback and for future shows. Keep up the good work!
    Also holy crap, those subs must of killed it!

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 5 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the compliments! Using complete darkness is totally intentional and an artistic choice by me, at least most of the time. We don't light the DJ because we don't want him to be a holy guy playing the music. We want the focus on the light show and the music instead. The diamond in the back is a basic version of the logo for the Four Diamonds fund, which is where the money raised at a Mini-THON is donated to.

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 4 года назад

      Main LR. The entire rig, subs and tops, takes higher than -18dB of signal to reach max output, and I prefer keeping my input faders at a reasonable level, vs Main LR at 0 and the inputs high. It also makes managing feedback easier as I only have to remember the max fader level for the mic, not the relationship between the mic fader + main LR fader.

There's a reason the guys doing the light shows in clubs like you talk about aren't out touring with artists.

    130+db is suicide on your hearing. I hope you and everyone around you had ear protection while you were testing that system

      Please understand the difference between dBc and dBa. It is a very important distinction.

      @@dougberry4674 I actually missed your note on the video about that reading being dBC. Only saw the previous note in the previous scene about it being dBA.

      130dbc actually isn't insane lol. If that was dBa, that would be insane.

      @@ihatesigningupforsht The dBA number up within 1 meter of the subs was actually also influenced by the bass SPL. 140dB at 50hz will register as 110dBA.

      110db(A) is still extremely loud looking at SPL Exposure time for noise guidelines they recommend around a maximum of 2mins of exposure. Now of course that was only peak SPL at 1 meter but still even at the back of the room 100db(A) is still only 15mins of exposure.

    I love EDM but these rave sets are trash. And it shows by the reaction of the students. A true DJ would migrate to a different style to keep the kids engaged. If the lights don’t match, whatever, as long as they arrive and you do a decent job of executing them it would be a way more successful event

      Wow, are you a mobile DJ? It's an EDM rave not a pop music rave, the kids aren't enjoying? Wow rewatch the video +3db "inputer"
