To clarify inside vs outside drift, the way I understand it (with my limited game design knowledge) is that outside drift reduces the traction on the back wheels, which causes the back of the vehicle to swing out, which then turns the vehicle sideways as the back wheel tries to overtake the front wheel (in rear wheel drive). With inside drift the back wheel gains more traction, turning it into a stronger pivot point, which then allows for much sharper turns, however that extra traction also makes it nearly impossible to counter steer once your direction is locked in. Basically outside drift tends to be superior because it can take very tight corners and very wide ones, due to the fact that you have control over the angle of your bike. This flexibility is required in most tracks. That's why there's only a few tracks that are considered to be inside drift tracks. Inside drift however does allow for really tight racing lines, if the track allows for it. It should also be said that inward drifting has less motion than outward drifting, as your whole vehicle isn't swinging out, which lets you make more subtle adjustments to your line, which could be useful in a handful of scenario's.
I agree with the overall assessment but you’re ignoring the micro-adjust meant nature of inward drift. For non boost drifts I have more control over my line in terms of reacting to situations. Regular drifters are better suited to complex turns overall but it’s much harder to react on the fly without it seriously punishing you, at least that’s how I feel. I miss Mario kart Wii, where the difference was bigger. Bikes had wheelies and only blue sparks. And being hit while wheelie-ing was super-punishing. The inward drift has been more balanced in 8, where there’s a delay before the inward movement starts. However, using inward it’s very easy to get to full speed, and get out of the way of danger.

That combo is actually pretty good! I use the sponge tires too and it also gives me a good amount of traction for this terrain tracks. Like bowser city and cheeseland.
I main inward drift. Idk why but I just can’t use outside drift. Might be because I grew up playing wii, or more likely 9 year old me picked the sports bike because he thought it looked cool and now 9 years later I haven’t looked back My combo is luigi + sports bike + blue rollers + cloud glider I know it’s not what everyone is using but it’s good I swear
I use to use vehicles with the slide drift, but when I learned the sport bikes had a different drift style I decided to use them. At first it was weird, so I switched off it for a bit, but now exclusively use the sport bikes for all tracks. Also exclusively race using Lemmy as my character with the Yoshi Bike/Azure Rollers/Bowser Kite combo primarily~
There are a few tracks i exclusively use inward drift on because of very particular properties involving how it handles drifting just after landing from a jump. I've noticed that inward drift on coconut mall particularly helps a lot with the sharp stairwell turns after tricking off a fountain, and that low mini turbo inward drift charges mini turbos on shorter sharp turns remarkably quickly
Shortcat. your videos are super helpful, I’ve been playing this game for a month now, and your Pro and Beginner guides alone have helped me climb 1000 VR in the last week, super big fan! Also I’m now an inward drift main because of this video, just in case you join us in our inward drift minority, the best combo is Yoshi bike, roller, cloud/paper glider and any of yoshi character class, but YoshiYoshi is super funny though😂
I've been using inward drift for last couple of years and I think you figured it out better than I did haha. I actually use this exact combo (but I'm a blue yoshi), I'm not a big winner but it's just really fun to drive.
In your short about inward drifting I commented yesterday about making a guide since I only know how to inward drift properly as I didn't even know there was a difference when I started playing, so I'm going to pretend like this video is for me thank you
Inward drift tip from someone whos dad races motorcycles: right turns- Start far left b4 turn Turn tightly to cut the corner You can easily pass outward drifters in bendy tracks!!! Yoshi circuit is SO FUN with inward!
Inward drift is super fun to play with once you get good at it, i like it. The only thing i dont like is how you cant bounce a million times to take a corner sharp when going slow
As a yoshi comet roller main roller main this is how I felt trying to use outside drift again, but eventually I got used to outside drift and can main both now.
I've never played this mario kart before, or mario kart a lot in general. But I do know how to ride a motorcycle. Maybe look into how motorcyclists take their lines and apply it to this? Also another thing with them is if you break or accelerate, you straighten your bike. Normally you'd start your turn on the right when going left, and vice versa, to end in the correct position on the road. You usually do the opposite and end up in a terrible position. But look at this 4Head trying to apply real-life driving to a motorcycle in a video game, enjoy the videos a lot man, keep 'em coming!
Shortcat, something i need to be known, the amount of mini-turbo you get from a given drift is a lot more dependent on how tightly you turn, given this, turning tighter generally gives the ability to produce better mini-turbo boosts. Additionally you recieve little to no benefit from beginning a drift as early as you do and it actually can be harmful in the event that something hits you as the forward movement of the spin-out animation is more likely to make you go off the track.
Saying inward drift is worse to turn is kind of not true imo. You get much finer control over your line and can stay on the inside of most of the corners with ease. What I find most fun about it is that inward "drift" behaves much more like real motorcycles so if you've got experience on motorcycles, you should know how to inward drift on mario kart
Inward drift mechanics are fundamentally different in that they turn less sharp, they are slower to switch between sharp/shallow angle on a single turn, and they cannot hop to turn faster. They have an advantage in lines on simple tracks because they don't face sideways. But they 100% have worse turning in 3 areas. This is not an intuitive difference because it has nothing to do with being inward vs outward, Nintendo just tweaked the code of inward to be worse on purpose
I see you having this problem as well, so I figure I should point it out: I have been an inward drift main since day 1 on deluxe, and I always seem to have a problem making it to the double item boxes. I think it's because those boxes appear at the wider parts of turns, and inward obviously has a hard time drifiting outward.
Since hopping and easier mini turbo management is such a help to outward drifters, the best way to balance inward drifting would be to give it a different bonus auxiliary bonus surely.
I think I might have started playing the game on inward drift without realizing cuz now I can’t bring myself to play anything else 😭 It’s really good though!! Sharp turns become your best friends with it
As an inside drift main, I can confirm you actually did very good for not playing inside drift much. Also, for some reason, I find it really hard to snake.
I recently just started playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe after years of playing only the Mach Bike and only playing Mario Kart Wii where outside drifting vehicles are basically unviable and almost never seen in CTGP. The inside drift is really weird in this game. I thought it would come more natural to me but it’s so difficult for me to know when to turn. I guess that’s part of the fun though lol.
Koopa, Sport Bike, Wooden Tires, Paraglider. This carried to about 10-12k on the Wii U version of this game while playing online. I love inside drift so much, there's something about that just feels right
I alternate between outward drift (Mr. Scooty) and inward drift (Sports Bike). Currently sit at around 31k online and let me tell you if somebody bumps you or you take a bad line it is SO hard to correct yourself in a pinch. Can't tell you how many times I've gotten fucked over because some small knick sent me screaming in another random direction 💀
Dry Bones, 1-up Bike, Triforce Wheels, Hylian Kite. Tons of inward drifting. It's a great combo for whipping around corners with an inward drift boost on 150cc. Not so great for long straightaways.
I played Inside drift in 8. I don't have deluxe, and my main was THIS EXACT COMBO! Obiously, I used a different Glider, but they all just give a +1 bar weight or +1 bar something. I used the latter, which I think the AC glider is as well. (I also tended to use Daisy Jet Bike as well. The Jet Bike and Yoshi Bike have the same visible stats and are both inward drifts, and I don't know the stat differences between Yoshi and Daisy, but it was usually one of the two.)

The fact people dont know what inside drift is is crzay considering it was the most broken combo for wii it feels like anyone who still uses it is because they were good on wii
might just be me but for some reason the yoshi bike feels a bit different than the other inward bikes, if you want to test by yourself i recommend using the comet bike which has the exact same stats as the yoshi bike. Could be a a good info to point out if its true
I've personally come to find that the Yoshi, Sports Bike, Off-Road, Paper Glider combo works best for me because I've almost always been an inward drifter myself It handles great when drifting and performing mini-turbos, acceleration is good when gaining speed after being hit by an item, I'd recommend it if you're wanting to switch things up a bit as I've been using it in a lot of online rooms lately
When Mario Kart 8 came out I started using the Yoshi Bike because I thought it was cool. Then I bought the DLC and found the Master Cycle to be cool. Then 8 Deluxe came out and I picked the Master Cycle Zero because I thought it was cool. Thats when I learned what inside drift was and that I was using it all this time.
Who knows, maybe the upcoming wave 6 will give inside drift frames the buffs they need to put them more on par with outside drift. Maybe we'll even see the return of Funky Kong inside drift as a competitive choice.
I would describe inside drift as following: When a bike is in a straight road the trail left behind is usually just a line. If you're drifting (or turning) however there's no longer 1 line, there's two now, one from the front wheel and the other from the bottom wheel. This is happens with an outside drift bike. In inside drift bike however the trail is always a straight line even when turning or drifting or at least this was in mkwii. In mk8 they changed it slightly so it starts the drift like an outside drift vehicle but then it "corrects" itself and it keeps drifting like an inside drift bike. This made it much harder to handle as they were much better than their counterparts in mkwii.
It’s so funny to see people have to describe inside drift. It was literally the opposite in Wii. Where if you were using a kart instead of a bike you were trying some wacky shit out, and probably goated.
I've used Inward Drift the whole time I played Mario Kart 8 and 8 Deluxe just cause the Yoshi Bike is my favourite bike. The combo I almost always use is Mario + Yoshi Bike + Slim Tires + MKTV Parafoil. I don't know if that's a good combination, looks balanced to me and I've won tons of races with it, just my go-to setup.
The funny thing is I way prefer inward drifting. Go straight while counter steering, super sharp when taking corners. Yoshi bike, comet and the sports bike are fun.
Makes me really happy Yoshi Bike has equivelant stats to Teddy Buggy. I think Teddy Buggy's design is repulsive and Yoshi is my favorite character and my original combo in the very original MK8 in the Wii U days was Biddy Buggy, Cyber Slicks, with Wario Glider and Light Blue Yoshi, the wheels and glider matching the shoes on Yoshi, and the kart and glider matching the color of the Yoshi I picked :D Yoshi Sport Bike is awesome and maybe I will find a list of best tracks for Inward Drift and pick those, thanks for the awesome video ^.^ Also I think Yoshi is going to get hit harder next patch, Nintendo was kinda testing the waters with slight nerfs to see if it impacted anything and it barely hit. I think Funky Kong is going to be in Rosa and King Boo's class, and is going to be buffed to Top Tier and standard xD
Which new character are you most excited for?

Inside drift like a really sharp turn where as outside drift is like a wide turn. I'm not really sure how else to explain it so I hope this helps.
That combo is actually pretty good! I use the sponge tires too and it also gives me a good amount of traction for this terrain tracks. Like bowser city and cheeseland.
As someone whose favourite game of all time is Mario Kart Wii, playing inside drift bikes in this game will always be painful for me
The characters on inward drift constantly look like there holding on for dear life when drifting lol
I main inward drift. Idk why but I just can’t use outside drift. Might be because I grew up playing wii, or more likely 9 year old me picked the sports bike because he thought it looked cool and now 9 years later I haven’t looked back
My combo is luigi + sports bike + blue rollers + cloud glider
I know it’s not what everyone is using but it’s good I swear
The cope is real
A man’s cope will never die
Same here
with inside I got into the top 0.5% on warios goldmine 200cc
rosalina, spots bike, azur Roller,
Don't ask me how I did that
Link, Master Cycle, Cyber Slick, Hylian Kite. I picked that combo when I was still a casual, but now it's the only bike I know how to play.
I play Rosa with the comet red rollers and the paper glider
I use to use vehicles with the slide drift, but when I learned the sport bikes had a different drift style I decided to use them. At first it was weird, so I switched off it for a bit, but now exclusively use the sport bikes for all tracks. Also exclusively race using Lemmy as my character with the Yoshi Bike/Azure Rollers/Bowser Kite combo primarily~
I use inward all the time and im glad your fining starting to see how fun and good it can be
There are a few tracks i exclusively use inward drift on because of very particular properties involving how it handles drifting just after landing from a jump. I've noticed that inward drift on coconut mall particularly helps a lot with the sharp stairwell turns after tricking off a fountain, and that low mini turbo inward drift charges mini turbos on shorter sharp turns remarkably quickly
Ya know i looked it up and i found that Daisy and Yoshi have the same stats, now i can use my favorite character!
I have legit been using inward drift since mkwii i had no idea that people struggle THIS much with it lmao
I dunno what it is about these videos, but they are so chill I love them lmao
Shortcat. your videos are super helpful, I’ve been playing this game for a month now, and your Pro and Beginner guides alone have helped me climb 1000 VR in the last week, super big fan! Also I’m now an inward drift main because of this video, just in case you join us in our inward drift minority, the best combo is Yoshi bike, roller, cloud/paper glider and any of yoshi character class, but YoshiYoshi is super funny though😂
Inward drift on 200cc is something I highly recommend.
I've been using inward drift for last couple of years and I think you figured it out better than I did haha. I actually use this exact combo (but I'm a blue yoshi), I'm not a big winner but it's just really fun to drive.
In your short about inward drifting I commented yesterday about making a guide since I only know how to inward drift properly as I didn't even know there was a difference when I started playing, so I'm going to pretend like this video is for me thank you
that yoshi island race was brutal I’d probably stop playing for the rest of the day if that was me
I know this combo isn't the best, but I've been having fun with daisy on the sport bike.
Inward drift tip from someone whos dad races motorcycles:
right turns-
Start far left b4 turn
Turn tightly to cut the corner
You can easily pass outward drifters in bendy tracks!!!
Yoshi circuit is SO FUN with inward!
as an mkwii lover this makes me happy
Inward drift is super fun to play with once you get good at it, i like it. The only thing i dont like is how you cant bounce a million times to take a corner sharp when going slow
Same for outward
As a yoshi comet roller main roller main this is how I felt trying to use outside drift again, but eventually I got used to outside drift and can main both now.
As someone who uses both the drift types depending on the Mii I choose, I can say it is weird using Inside drift after using Outside drift for a while
When we needed him the most, he returned with another banger video
We still need the older version of him.
I was waiting for a video like this :)
You should do a collab with jperm
Why
the theory is that ShortCat is actually just Jperm, since they have similar voices and similar thumbnail styles.
@@SummersTimelyCringe And same nationality, and same style of talking, and that they both play mario kart

I remember that Waluigi stadium loss! It was the end of an era, but at least you're more free from the stress of keeping that streak going!
its always a good time when shortcat posts!
Dude wake up Shortcat just uploaded
@@Shortcat321 nintendo hates mario kart wii fans confirmed (absolutely no talking about funky kong and large number of returning wii tracks)
SHORTCAT you are the reason why I started playing Mario kart again! You are so funny and I’m making a video on you if that’s ok!
To get better at inward drifting i think it is best to lean closer to the outward wall as the sharp turns may get onto grass
I see you having this problem as well, so I figure I should point it out: I have been an inward drift main since day 1 on deluxe, and I always seem to have a problem making it to the double item boxes. I think it's because those boxes appear at the wider parts of turns, and inward obviously has a hard time drifiting outward.
11:29 you can see another advantage. When you're drifting and trailing a bomb and a red shell hits it, it won't normally hit you.
8:17 "I'm gonna be a N-word god by the end of this video"
thanks but now wats outward drift
Since hopping and easier mini turbo management is such a help to outward drifters, the best way to balance inward drifting would be to give it a different bonus auxiliary bonus surely.
He’s back❤❤❤
I’ve been using inward drift since a kid so I’m used to it completely
I think I might have started playing the game on inward drift without realizing cuz now I can’t bring myself to play anything else 😭
It’s really good though!! Sharp turns become your best friends with it
As an inside drift main, I can confirm you actually did very good for not playing inside drift much. Also, for some reason, I find it really hard to snake.
Day one of asking for the worst inward drift combo
master cycle metal wheels heavyweight?
I'm happy about funky Kong appearing he was my favorite character in mkwii
I recently just started playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe after years of playing only the Mach Bike and only playing Mario Kart Wii where outside drifting vehicles are basically unviable and almost never seen in CTGP. The inside drift is really weird in this game. I thought it would come more natural to me but it’s so difficult for me to know when to turn. I guess that’s part of the fun though lol.
J perm?
#1 mariokart RUclipsr🔥🔥
Koopa, Sport Bike, Wooden Tires, Paraglider.
This carried to about 10-12k on the Wii U version of this game while playing online. I love inside drift so much, there's something about that just feels right
You took my combo! The Yoshi on Yoshi with Rollers!😂
I feel that! I always want to hop to correct but it just doesn't work
Dry Bones, 1-up Bike, Triforce Wheels, Hylian Kite. Tons of inward drifting. It's a great combo for whipping around corners with an inward drift boost on 150cc. Not so great for long straightaways.
Ill try it
What's the "1-up bike"
I played Inside drift in 8. I don't have deluxe, and my main was THIS EXACT COMBO!
Obiously, I used a different Glider, but they all just give a +1 bar weight or +1 bar something. I used the latter, which I think the AC glider is as well. (I also tended to use Daisy Jet Bike as well. The Jet Bike and Yoshi Bike have the same visible stats and are both inward drifts, and I don't know the stat differences between Yoshi and Daisy, but it was usually one of the two.)
Is shortcat the same person as J Perm. I mean their voices are the exact same
Omg I see my mii in your video Idk how I haven't noticed you lmao I love your videos
shortcat to pax: ur a god why are you in this room?? he even uses inward drift!
kamek to shortcat: ur a god why are you in this room??he even uses inward drift!
21:14 what’s wrong with roy bittybuggy? I’m playing on the latest version and it works good enough for me, am I missing something?
The fact people dont know what inside drift is is crzay considering it was the most broken combo for wii it feels like anyone who still uses it is because they were good on wii
0:01 why is his yoshi color is green and the yoshi on the bike is red
might just be me but for some reason the yoshi bike feels a bit different than the other inward bikes,
if you want to test by yourself i recommend using the comet bike which has the exact same stats as the yoshi bike. Could be a a good info to point out if its true
It is different than the comet, jet bike and that zelda one but it’s the same as the sport bike
@@zwillscoopchannel9689no, comet is the same as yoshi bike, sport has different stats
@@twhylerm i think comet has slightly higher invincibility than yoshi bike
@@snekbee neglible
I was talking about this when I was racing my sister, and she thought I was saying n-word drift
Speakig of wii i think that a mk wii video would be very fun ! Also, good job as always
I've personally come to find that the Yoshi, Sports Bike, Off-Road, Paper Glider combo works best for me because I've almost always been an inward drifter myself
It handles great when drifting and performing mini-turbos, acceleration is good when gaining speed after being hit by an item, I'd recommend it if you're wanting to switch things up a bit as I've been using it in a lot of online rooms lately
Bro too god for inward drift
Who knows, maybe the upcoming wave 6 will give inside drift frames the buffs they need to put them more on par with outside drift. Maybe we'll even see the return of Funky Kong inside drift as a competitive choice.
I would describe inside drift as following:
When a bike is in a straight road the trail left behind is usually just a line.
Inward drift turns into the direction you want to go immediately
The funny thing is I way prefer inward drifting.
Go straight while counter steering, super sharp when taking corners.
Yoshi bike, comet and the sports bike are fun.
What
I think this was my exact build when playing. First time playing it was very odd to get used to but it was fun.
People that use inside drift make me question humanity
Also; Nintendo still lied about that red shell indicator update… 😤
Makes me really happy Yoshi Bike has equivelant stats to Teddy Buggy. I think Teddy Buggy's design is repulsive and Yoshi is my favorite character and my original combo in the very original MK8 in the Wii U days was Biddy Buggy, Cyber Slicks, with Wario Glider and Light Blue Yoshi, the wheels and glider matching the shoes on Yoshi, and the kart and glider matching the color of the Yoshi I picked :D
Yoshi Sport Bike is awesome and maybe I will find a list of best tracks for Inward Drift and pick those, thanks for the awesome video
^.^
Also I think Yoshi is going to get hit harder next patch, Nintendo was kinda testing the waters with slight nerfs to see if it impacted anything and it barely hit. I think Funky Kong is going to be in Rosa and King Boo's class, and is going to be buffed to Top Tier and standard xD
