    Although people love our vision of a sustainable self-sufficient community with its own organic food forest and edible landscape, they occasionally ask why the homes look so funny.
    But our homes are not arbitrary. They specifically look the way the look by design. And the purpose of their design is to be very energy efficient, whereas most modern homes are designed only to look good.
    When I first decided to build an off-grid home in the mountains of Ghana, I had intended to build an Earthship home, which is a home design by US architect Mike Reynolds. However, the plans for his homes were way too expensive and getting the materials to build an Earthship home in Ghana was challenging. I therefore eventually decided to go with a Net Zero Energy Earthbag home designed by the late Owen Geiger who was the leading authority on Earthbag homes.
    Once I purchased the plans I had my Builder, Brandon Rogers, make extensive changes to suit my needs while still maintaining the energy efficiency and self-sufficiency nature of the design.
    You will notice the sloping roof on our homes that allows owners to do rainwater harvesting if they desire. Also, you will notice high clerestory windows that allow plenty of daylight to come into the home and thereby eliminating the need for lights during the day. In addition, our homes are built using the earth which allows them to be cooler than homes built using concrete blocks.
    We have thought long and hard about building homes that are well thought out and not simply homes that look a certain way. However, when you enter the house you will notice that it looks very modern with very high end finishings.

    Thanks for elaborating Eric. The earthships look nice and I saw them onze but as you say as well. Difficult to scale. 1 question about the upper window lighting. Does that mean all the houses face the same direction in order to maximize sunlight intake? Then again this is more of an issue here in Holland as we are not so close to the equator

    • @EricIsFree
      @EricIsFree  2 года назад +1

      Hey Samuel, no all the homes will not face the same direction, but this is definitely not an issue here with so much sunlight.

    I also thought the homes appeared somewhat unique and guessed that they were design so with purpose in conserving energy and to make it more comfortable do to the humidity. I've seen many homes like the "Earth Ship" in a few RUclips videos and believed you guys were taken a similar method. I personally like the style and pattern. One can see here in California homes being built that look very similar in style. To me its unique and modern and gives a different look than the box like style seen commonly in western society. I would add a bit more exterior decor to the cement finish and plant life around the home and keep it well maintained. Outstanding job your doing. I sold my home here in California back in 2003 and now I'm seriously considering on purchasing a home over there, but won't contact you until I have at least 3/4 of the total cost in hand.

      @@tanarich5515 I agree. Not good health wise either. I recently installed an exhaust fan for bathroom as well. Will in the future install an ERV for entire house... for fresh air circulation and filtration. Something you don't see Ghanaian contractors doing for especially glass window houses. Health problem breathing in bad air. Air-conditioning is only for cooling. Need something to bring in fresh air.

    Design is important to gain the best from the build but not if it affects the cost of running

    The idea of "curb appeal" (built for resale) or "look what I got" also invites thieves and causes jealousy. Living off grid means the house must facilitate as many amenities as it can built-in, light, heat/cooling, views, security, etc. Plus you can do a lot more living outside in Africa climates than anywhere in America. I didn't study earthships so much, I did quonsets, silos, geodesics and cargo containers. I like the sandbag construction.
