How To: Convert 3D Models to Pepakura Foam Templates. Full Step By Step Breakdown.

- It's time for another Pepakura 4 cosplay tutorial video. This time we'll be taking a raw 3D file, pulled straight off of Thingiverse and throwing it directly into Pepakura Designer 4 to unfold. Going over the process of the initial unfold, what to expect, what to avoid, and how to pick apart the model and transfer it to the 2D plane for printing and foam construction. This same method can be used to convert it for fiberglass construction as well if desired. This works for both .obj and .stl files.
You can acquire Pepakura 4 Designer from here (PLEASE NOTE: You will need to buy the full program in able to save your progress):tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/
You can find the file I used in this video here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:209...

Thank you for this! I've been wanting a detailed tutorial *somewhere* about how to unfold pepakura for foam builds!
Glad I could help =) I'm planning on a few more tutorials for even more tricks so stay tuned.
I see you did a lot of cleanup in Pepakura, but it might be easier to clean up the 3D model itself at the root source in some cases. That also allows you to fix issues like faces not joining properly, or pieces poking through other faces.
Fixes like that can be done in 3D modelling software, true. This tutorial however was designed for those who may have very limited or no skills in 3D modelling software, such as myself.
Will you be covering the updates of Pepakura Designer 5 soon?
I'll be honest...I didn't even know it had launched yet lol. I will have to check it out first and see, though I am always leary of new releases. I remember when I first got Pep Designer 4 it printed out solid black pages for some reason and drained all my printer ink...
Though I am excited for some of the new features.
is there any alternative to pepakura for mobile?
You mentioned that if the object has too many faces it’ll crash, is there a way to fix that? Like give it less faces?
There is a way, though sometimes it works good and other times it messes up the model to an almost unworkable state. You'll need the program :Mesh Mixer (which is free) and you'll need to do a process called "Quadratic Simplification". Honestly I'm very new to it myself and it has helped a few times, but it adds more work in the unfolding process.
He since put up a video showing how here ruclips.net/video/8i5PyRZHSQc/видео.html
How to you get the model to look nice a clean like that when i import a model never looks like that is full over fragments and triangles
It boils down to how detailed the model is. The higher the count of faces the harder the program is going to try and figure things out. I have come across a few files before that for some reason have glitches or faults in the loading process, but unfortunately I never figured out what caused them. You could run the file through a mesh mixing program like... Mesh Mixer, and change the face value, but sometimes that just adds to the mess. In the end it's just trial and error with the files.
Hey bro i making a model in pepakura of wheatley, how i can make a object list to see each part separately, for example: inside, handles, etc.
I don't think you can categorize certain sections like that. Only way I know you could kind of do it would be to move the pieces on the 2D plane into sectioned off areas. I've done that before for full suit unfolds, moving all the leg and arm pieces to certain rows of the papers.
How do you transfer 3d files straight into pepakura because for me the file won’t appear when I click open file it only shows me pepakura files nothing else
Check and make sure that the file is either .obj or .stl. If it is, right click on the file and find "Open with" From there you should be able to select Pep Designer. If not, pick the "Pick another App" and then find the program on your computer.
If the file is not in either of those formats it may not be able to open properly with the program and therefore cannot work.
it is possible export edge number also in .dxf file ?
Yes I believe so. The option to export to .DXF is there under File>Export>Vector Format>Drawing Interface Format or DXF Files Per Sheet. Whether or not the edge ID numbers also carry over I am unsure as I do not have a program to open DXF files. I would assume that is what the "DXF Files Per Sheet option is for, as it would transfer over the 2D portion of the .pdo file, but again I'm not 100% certain.
And Challenge of the GOBOTS came out exactly 1 week before the Transformers did
My program crash every time I try to convert the file to PDF for printing. The model has many faces, but I don’t understand how to fix it
I have another video that teaches how to reduce the face amount to fix this very problem. Unfortunately you'll have to unfold the file again once it's done, but it'll stop the program from crashing:

Is there a way to simplified the template?
Which aspect are you looking to simplify? The unfolding process or the finished product? I think I'm unsure of what you're asking.
is there a way to change from pepakura to 3d model?
Yes, though you'll need the full purchased version of Pepakura Designer. Go to: File>Export>Texture Editing> 3D Model with UV info. This will change it from a .pdo file to a .obj file.
where did u get the modal from
Got it off of thingiverse: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2096456
Do u got a reverse of this saw the video before passing out
Do you mean turning Pepakura files into 3D files? If so, then yes! Load the pep file in, then go to File>Export>Texture Editing>3D Model with UV Info. This will convert it back into a 3D model.
Will that work on any pep file so it can be 3d printed and do I use same programs in the video still haven't watched it been busy sadly
@@zanruos88 It will, but it may not make it instantly 3D print ready. It depends on how the file was first loaded into the program originally. More than likely it'll have flaws, though I have had 1 or 2 print ready ones come out of it before.
bro how to get 3d models please tell broo🥲
There's a couple places I frequent for files. Thingiverse.com, Sketchfab.com, and Pepakura.eu The first and last sites contain the file for the Gundam Strike helmet used in this video.
The models resource has game rips. But they’re hit or miss in terms of the quality of the rips.
ok i understand nothing
It's ok, it takes time to understand everything. I'd say it took me about 2-3 years to fully understand everything you can do with the program and how things translate inside it. So don't stress it, and if you have any questions feel free to ask them. I'm here to help =)
