Author’s notes on the video:
-Amuro is often considered as the first Federation MS pilot in old sources. I added “in combat”, because obviously they had test pilots and I added “official”, because the Federation pilots in Igloo used their Zakus for False Flag Operations. Missions of this kind are considered illegal and are therefore kept off the official record (similar to Zeon’s GM Camouf). I’m doing my best to retcon stuff in a sensical way.
-I also found mentions of Amuro being the top Mobile Armor Ace. However, with Igloo adding the Oggo to Zeon’s MA lineup, I decided to leave this piece of information out.
-The Full Armor Gundam story is messy. IIrc, the first time it appeared in MSV it was considered a failure and said to be never built. However, at some point the story changed and now we don’t just have 1, but multiple Full Armor Gundam. So I added it as “some sources say…”. I’m blaming the hectic ending of the OYW for this confusion. Maybe I should do a theory on how to reconcile these 2 stories (I know a lot of data of the OYW got lost, so the Full Armor Gundam might’ve been a victim of that too)
-There is no official translation for Tenneth A. Jung’s unit (第7狙撃部隊), but I translated in accordance with the initials S.S.U. seen on the emblem.
-Talking about having no official translations, most of these guys have 2 or more ways to write their name. I went with what my gut liked best, based on the Katakana and existing names.
-The low-quality face images for 3 of the aces is because I literally could not find any better images as of the recording of this video. I invite you to find better ones (Seriously, I also want to see better pictures of them. Any good artists here?)

-In case anyone would worry about this: Yes, I know Japanese. I didn’t just throw my Japanese sources into Google translate and tried making sense of the gibberish it spews out (It’s not actually that bad for individual words btw)

Honestly, in regards to the Oggo, I always figured it to be more like a Zeonic Mobile Pod, like a Ball counterpart.
Gihren's Greed classifies both units as Mobile Armors, so I've been doing the same. The MG manual for the Ball also notes that the Ball was the Federation's attempt at making a Mobile Armor.
Wasn't aware of the mobile pod designation.
The confusion with the full armor gundam bugs me to but if you wish I do have a theory behind it. I think that maybe Bandai/sunrise might be confusing it with its successor gundam.wikia.com/wiki/FA-78-2_Heavy_Gundam cause I noticed there has not be anything real mention of it at all and that upsets me cause I always wanted a HG of it.

totally wrong... GM is not a mediocre suit...its way superior to zaku and considered on par with DOM... misconception is due to anime concentrate zion aces...making GM looks like cannon fooder... truth is the other way round...
@LoliMaster 69 blame the training for that most of the pilots are freshly drafted and are young. And the training only lasted for like few weeks but here's a thing. when the GM was officially commissioned into combat ALL of the major battle that involves mobile suit going head to head all of them during one year war the GM's won them all and that's a fact.
Dead GMs were plot device, nothing more.
GM was a good suit for the 1 year war, it just was that the federation's general strategy was to put a shit ton of GM's on the field and just overwhelm the enemy, resulting in a lot of untrained pilots getting killed
@@kianboonchua975 I say it's still under-performed compared to Zaku II (speed, weapon...). It's just that GM is easily to produced that they can win with number.
I want an episodic OVA now called Gundam Aces about unknown pilots on the battlefield. each couple of episodes could be about a new pilot and new weapon/scenario.
That "new weapon" concept is basically MS Igloo

But its the truth though? However the reverse is also true, in that no matter how skilled a pilot may be, if the machine is not upto the job, then the pilot is limited in what he/she can do with it in any given situation..
@@Feiora well, it's true, like what happened to Amuro when his skills continously develop that the RX 78 2 limits him and needs an upgrade to RX 78 3, which also limits him in the future, and designing Nu Gundam to suits his piloting skills and the armaments he needed up to his death in the Axis

Damn, all of that emphasis on mobile suits and the flyboy *still* manages to rack up twice as many kills as the literal best MS pilot.
I wonder how most of those pilots reacted when they learned Amuro Ray is a teenage boy.
Cat Face Poetry shocked if they are seasoned soldiers in the federation for years before the OYW. A 16 year old with little to no military training surviving against massive zeon’s forces and taking out veterans is terrifying especially the televised side 6 airspace battle. The war was so bad that most soldiers were teenagers and old retired officers pulled back into service. New recruits shown in MS igloo got less time for training before deployment from infantry to ms pilots.
But Amuro is a newtype. A very best one.
So recently from Zeonic scanlation they posted more background material of Tenneth A Jung . Jung join the EFF about a decade before the one year war leaving his cushy home in Cuba to be more free spirited. He was stationed on a battle ship in the Atlantic Ocean as part of the air force when the colony drop occur and taken up shore in EFF Belfast afterwards. Jung signed up for the EFSF who are refilling their ranks after the devastating lost at Loum. Jung made a name for himself in 14 combat missions in space in roughly 2 months. His talent got him sent to Jaburo for MS training and later redeploy into space with a RGM 79 for combat testing after the side 7 incident. When the Zeon retreated back to space after Odessa , Jung and his unit mostly engaged in mop up operation destroying HLV and space ships with undeployed MS which make up the bulk of his MS kill count. Jung saw action leading up to Solomon with his GM sniper custom and later at Abao Qu with a GM command as a temporary MS.

The majority of ace pilots deserved custom gm’s instead of the average gm
Personally I would value ship kills over MS kills. Imo a ship kill should be worth at the very least twice as much as a MS kill.
Also this list doesn't seem to account for fighters, tanks and Mobile Armors. I'm willing to bet Amuro has more MA kills than anyone else.

@@557deadpool If destroying ships is so easy then Char destroying 5 wouldn't of been such a big deal. Johnny Ridden only scored 3 as I recall to become a noteable pilot. It's only the more skilled pilots that are actually able to take down ships with any regularity. Also, White Base was pretty tough so no, ships are not "easy" to kill.
The Oggo isn't in the same class as the larger MAs that Amuro destroyed. The Oggo is literally just a Zeon Ball so it's ridiculous to act like the Oggo is the same league as the Big Zam, Elmeth, Braw Bro or Bigro. It's not even on par with a Zaku I or GM!
Except a ship is a slow moving target when compared to a fast moving mobile suit. More often than not ships were more so targets of opportunity if a pilot managed to get past the waves and waves of mobile suits.

@@_gungrave_6802 The thing is, ships were more durable in most respects, Char was renowned since he *singlehandedly* sank five Magellans and seven Salamis, which normally required groups of Zakus to take down.
Always sucks how Gruntsuits always behave as If they are made out of TNT in non-OVAs and other sources must prove that these are not necessary coffins. Always breaks my heart. Like there ist a policy at Sunrise to show non-main Federation Pilots as incompetent as possible
I think Unicorn was definitely a step in the right direction on that front. There was the Jegan that put up a great fight against the Kshatriya, several examples during the battle of Torrington etc.
I think Master Pierce Rayer deserves and honorable mention, potential kill count of 34 MS, 1 mobile armor, and 2 hover carriers. This is all in the course of the last month of the war, obviously that count can change based on your performance in the game.

I really wish some of these EFF aces got more attention- most people are far more familiar with the Zeon MSV aces due to many of them (especially Johnny Ridden) having exclusive mangas and side stories dedicated to them. I think Lydo Wolf only had that one short story about him- and it was before he got his GM Sniper II.
there are other Fed aces that got their own story like Hughes Courand (0081), Yuu Kajima (Blue Destiny), Matt Healy (Lost War Chronicles) and Master P Rayer (Rise from Ashes), but none of them had the score kill more than 30 i guess

I'd actually love to see the numbers on the effectiveness of Mobile Suits VS. traditional atmospheric and space fighters. The Earth Federation had yet to phase out its traditional air forces by at least UC 0096, so there must have been something to them.
AutoFox1 From Gundam MSD origin kit line , the Zaku cannon that Zeon pilot Ian Graden used was developed in response to not only the federation inferior guncannon suits, but their Air Force superiority. Also when you look at Zeon’s support vehicles design such as the magella tank and dopp fighter indicate inexperience in combat regarding earth’s gravity and various environments. From Zeonic front, it is mentioned for Zeon invasion force to have an air force and navy requires taking Federation equipment and re-engineering them.
So in the battle of Loum and the one week war, the fielding of space fighters lead to almost 50% of MS losses on Zeon's side and almost 70% of ship losses. On the European front during OYW, air superiority was the only thing keeping EFF on land. During Odessa, Air superiority lead to the federation win in Odessa (note that EFF only fielded less than 30 MS in the operation). In the early stages of the OYW, EFSF would launch fighter sorties from Lunar II to mess with Zeon supply deliveries, defending the base, and most importantly, scouting missions as radars are now useless. so yeah there was a lot to them.

The Federation's numbers are more realistic than Zeon's.
I know this comment is old. But do remember that originally Zeon held strong over Federation. Infact the GM units were so bad when they first came out that Zaku 2s judt dominated them

Coz if so man Amuro and the top Ace, killing more than 100 people in MS in less than 1 year, no wonder Amuro always seemed scarred...

Even so, I still believe Amuro should receive 1st spot. The difference between him and Tenneth's overall scores is one, however, if we're classifying ships above MS I would rather pick Amuro if I was a CO.
Another topic of note, I can't seem to recall how many MAs Amuro has destroyed, but that should be taken into account I believe as well: Bigro, Bigzam, Zakrello; take your pick because Amuro doesn't give a shit.
Despite having 'less' (1) confirmed kills, Amuro certainly has his fair share of MA kills and ship kills (I feel like Amuro has more ship kills than just nine).
I suppose it depends on how you look at it, but side by side I think Amuro would eat Tenneth for breakfast in a 1v1.

This is true. Also, after Jaburo, Amuro was already feared amongst Zeon. Inexperienced pilots would often just run away from him. PLUS, the White Base was sent on a decoy mission. This means that Amuro didn't even see combat against the main Zeon force where most of the recorded kills were. Adding to this, he was often preoccupied with dealing with bigger threats rather than the small fries as you pointed out. He was the one to take out Big Zam, Gelgoog, Elmeth, and Zeong.

Man, the side story video game pilots didn't even make the list. I was expecting that ma boi Yuu Kajima, who was even called the Blue Death fer cryin' out loud, would be here. Though I guess they may not have counted his kills since he had some secret/unauthorized missions. I guess that there are also no official kill counts for guys such as Lt. Burning, the White Dingo Team, etc.

I actually recognize a few of the names (Lydo, Lon, Heinz, Tenneth) from the Gihren's Greed series but where are the folks earlier in the list from? I've honestly never heard of them prior to this vid so I'm curious to where you learned about them.
You know I cannot help wonder about the kill totals for other Federation pilots introduced in Side Stories or games. For example, Yuu Kajima of Blue Destiny, any of the 8th Team members, and maybe even the Immortal 4th MS Team from 0083. I also wonder about Amuro's total career kill count through both the Gryps War and into the First Neo-Zeon War then the Second Neo-Zeon War. I am sure it would be much higher then his OYW record.

One thing that disappointed me in Gihren's Greed Menace of Axis V was that a lot of pilots were taken out compared to the previous game. The previous game on the PS2 had most of these pilots and most of the Zeon ace pilots like Thomas Kurtz... but then they were noticably absent in Menace of Axis never mind Shin Gihren's Greed.
I rather liked Wolf's victory quote: "Go and tell your friends. If you see the Dancing Black Death, RUN."

Great video. By the by, did you see the stuff for that new SD line they're doing? I know SD's aren't typically your jam, but considering the GM head that comes with the inner skeleton for the RX-78-2 you can get, well, I could see that enticing you, being able to make the RX-78-2 into a GM. (even if it wouldn't be a proper one exactly)

Nice, video, but since some of these characters are a bit more obscure (and I haven't seen all the UC recently enough to remember them) it would have been good to include when they made their appearance.
Nearly all of them are from short story manga or games.
So I noticed after making the comment, which was even more reason I'd like to know since I'm almost completely unfamiliar with those.
For me Amuro Ray is still the Ace of Ace.

I don't know much about the manga but it seems to me that there are many of the things in the manga that don't go in line with things that happened in many of the series.
As a sidenote I would love to see a UC series that has 2-3 episode focusing on some side aspects of the war covered in the other media. That way they could showcase some of the mobile suit variations that don't appear in the series and show other pilots that had an impact in the war but never got screen-time. They could also do this as a way of creating a canon version of the story to iron out any discrepancies caused by many of the other manga/games/shorts.
thats what they tried to do with thunderbolt, but that didnt really work well, i mean, it ended up becoming Alt UC, due to "Powercreep".
on a side note, both "8th ms team" and "war in the pocket" are pretty much what you want, as well as the msigloo series, all 3 are great companion series, except for the 3rd "season" of msigloo(first episode is ok, the others, not so much).

Honestly, the GM was a great mobile suit. The most important mass production model of the OYW. It performed like a Rick Dom, but had numbers. The Gelgoog was better, but it was too little, too late.
no, the Doms and Rick Doms are better than the (regular) GMs, only certain things like Acceleration that the GM excel
the main factor why GMs are good, is because LOTS of GMs pilot are veterans, even more dangerous is they are fighter jet veterans, make a lighter GM a deadly force for even the advanced Gelgoog piloted by rookies
