I had this crazy theory as a kid that Herro was actually some kind of Terminator-like Android, because no normal human being could survive an explosion unscathed like that. Then I learned what Plot Armor was years later.

Regarding Kira’s atmospheric re-entry, he still got pretty feverish from the ordeal and was bed-ridden. Meanwhile, both Yzak and Dearka also fell to Earth and did not seem to suffer any serious injury. I’m inclined to believe that Coordinators in general are more heat-resistant than Naturals.

I remember Kira also mentioning that the the Strike was theoretically capable of unassisted atmospheric re-enter, according to its manual. Though he didn't get to fully test it because he would otherwise been far too separated from the Archangel, leading the Archangel to adjust it's course to end up with the Strike.

Badgiruel agrees with Kira on the Strike's manual and specifications, but also mentions that it was an untested feature and they weren't sure how hot the cockpit would get (meaning the pilot could potentially get cooked inside even if the Strike itself survived reentry). The Archangel's doctor also mentioned in the episode after that the cockpit got hotter than a natural could handle, so it was a combination of the Strike's capabilities and Kira's resistance to heat as a coordinator. A regular mobile suit of the First Bloody Valentine War, like a GINN, would have blown up on reentry (we do see Athrun survive atmospheric interface in a ZAKU in GSD, so presumably by the time the Second Bloody Valentine War erupts, regular mobile suits are tougher), and a natural pilot in the Strike may have still died to the heat - these are the two factors why Kira could survive that situation.

It just proves that most of Seed Destiny was just bad fanficiton. Years later, Kira and Shinn's battle is still controversial. I never considered Shinn surviving the end of Seed part of his plot armor. Attributed the damage to be from his battle with Providence. Plus, he flew straight up before Genesis fired. So he could have made it out of the blast radius.
Have to give Patrick props too for going back out there time after time after time of getting blown away. Even someone who thinks they're lucky has to have that thought that this could be the one they don't come back from.

Quartre: Shot down in a fighter jet and crashes (totally fine)
Wufei: Self stabs Shenlong to use the explosion to escape. This could get a pass.
Zechs: Epyon's Destruction
Noin: Takes a full Leo Cannon blast and it does negligible damage (even though that weapon just took out a more armored Leo in the same scene)
Lady Une: Flies Wing into the Libra's main cannon.
And Treize: Was in a Leo getting shot up by two mobile doll Leos on full auto. No damage. But, well, he lost that armor later, so I guess it evens out. Although, considering his plan, I guess it's more like he just decided to turn it off.

@@santiagogarcia1606 I appreciate the factoid. I had a feeling it survived, since that is the easiest way to explain Zechs' survival. It's still plot armor (imo) as it means the Epyon survived the Libra's power source exploding at point blank, and the hole in its chest from the battle (which was near the cockpit) was also facing that blast.

Include the mobile suits as plot armor in Gundam Wing. They mentioned no more mobile suits at the end of Endless Waltz. Then Frozen Teardrop happened, and now mobile suits returns. And from what I heard, Epyon made its return on Frozen Teardrop, with a replacement arm.

Missing is the one that infuriated me the most in Gundam Wing. That was when the Mercurius piloted by Heero took a direct hit from Wing Zero's combined Twin Beam Cannons without a scratch, which is complete bullshit. Yes, he had the Planet Defensor shield deployed, but remember a single shot from those cannons destroyed an entire colony a minute before.
Plus the discs were clearly obliterated the second the beam touches them, so the Mercurius depended on its (plot) armor to take the blunt of the blast. Then, making matters worse, Trowa survives blocking a shot with the Vayate without the protection of an energy field. If you want to appreciate this miracles, here´s a link:

Wing zero has like 3 or 4 power settings for the TBR so i always assumed it used the lowest or one of the lowest

I have one that most seem to overlook. Athrun and Meyrin when Shin shish kabobed the GOUF. Shin's blade hit into, if not near, the cockpit and machine exploded in a body of water afterwords. If the explosion didn't killed them, drowning would. I would also add water pressure, but I'll be kind and say it was shallow. I imagine Waltfeld must felt cheated considering he lost some body parts and lover from and exploded MS, while Athrun and Meyrin got out with simply recoverable injuries.
That first time Kira Yamato survived the Aegis self detonation was even more stupid than you state in this video. Not only was his cockpit exposed to the blast the Phase Shift armor that his gundam had was not even in affect at the time cause both the Strike and the Aegis didn't have enough power to use Phase Shift anymore at that point in the battle. So the protection that "could" have afforded was null and void.

At least they fleshed out Heero's back story to include a number of medical experiments to give him enhanced combat abilities and survivability. You know the plot armor is intense when they rewrite your origin.

@Edward Barillas Well, i am not sure if i understand it correctly or not but the N jammer... restricts the flow of neutrons caused by humans. So that humans cannot smash neutrons into other stuff and cause a nuclear fussion. The idea is cool but the range of it though. How can a few of them shut down the whole Earth? And how in the world does that have to do with alreafy working Nuclear power plant is beyond me. Henceforth, i like the idea but have to agree with you those thing don't make any sense. Also, another reason why i gave up watching seed a long time ago. Just too messy.
Their manpower and resources though how much do they even have to be able to have a war that large that long?
He saved SEED Destiny if we're being honest. That show was awful the whole way until Kira and Athrun decided to put on their big boy pants and end the show already.
Late subscriber, but your point about Wing convincing lots of new fans to the idea that Gundams need to be invulnerable monsters is spot-on The next series I had access to was 0083, (and that was a hell of a shift...) But I'm better now. :p Keep on with the fun videos!

How bad a plot armor is depends on the setup. similar to answers to a riddle.
If you lay down how impossible the odds of survival are, you need to equivalently obey what you laid down in the solution.

OO never revolved around patrick survivng, he initially survived so setsuna doesn't look like a total ass. By the time the movie came around, him surviving was known.
08's initial ball fight was part of the buildup of central conflict, and the 2nd example, like W, was a surprise with no real buildup, so we don't feel betrayed
But let's not equate death to good writing. Azur Lane's infamous episode 3 had the opposite of plot armor. But it still follows the above statement.

Mikazuki's isn't bad IMO because he gets more and more disabled throughout the show and dies in the end.

The difference between skill and plot armor is how you animate it or how much you show of it to the viewer.
Iok was the anti Patrick the writers kept him alive to keep pissing off the audience.
Gundam Thunderbolt has the best example on how to 'plot armor done right'. When Daryl and his Zaku I snipe the FMA Gundam in the head. A thunderbolt blocks the beam riffle shot.

You forgot the scene with Heero where he survived a battle against a squad of Virgo using a Leo. The Virgos somehow cant hit shit when they were shooting at Heero.
Then, the shots that DID land on the Leo was either shrugged off or hit a part that wasnt vital... Whereas Heero's allies then were picked off like flies.
Remember:those Virgos were equipped with a beam cannon. Although the output is nowhere near the Buster Rifle, it was still strong enough to punch through more powerful suits like the Taurus or armored carriers with little difficulty.
Is there any sort of ejection system in any Gundam series? I know of the core fighters that are in a few Gundams but I can't think of a single grunt suit that has one.

That explosion came from Minerva firing her positron cannon. Not from freedom Gundam exploding (because in fact, it didn't explode. Thus giving cagalli a chance to recover Kira using the strike rouge)
Yeah no, I'll never believe positron cannons can make an explosion half that big after Mwu shielded Archangel from one with just Strike Gundam.
(And if they could, Blue Cosmos could have used them instead of nukes to destroy space colonies a long time ago. Just saying.)

it was shown many times that Minerva's Tanhauser is more like a nuclear bomb when it hits it's target (or even deflected) because the blast area would have a literal mushroom cloud after the blast.
the scene which Mwu blocked a blast from Dominion was a plot hole to be honest. because the Strike (with a 1st gen phase shift armor) endured the whole blast before disintegrating wherin when arcangel fired it's lohengrin it decimated Dominion with ease (and take note, Dominion was hit at the bridge. not in the center hull section)
Blue Cosmos (and Logos in extension) can't build a whole fleet of Arcangel class ships because of the financial constraints that the earth has at that time. remember that the 1st bloody valentine war is still not finished at the blue cosmos time and when Logos entered the scene, half of Junius 7 was dropped at earth. thus redirecting the funds that Earth's Government has for militarization to disaster relief. and asides, Logos was busy building Destroys, fully arming Heaven's Base, creating biological CPU's for their new Gundams and all those terrors we seen in the series.
@@lancegigs9022 Honestly doesn't excuse Kira from surviving anyway if the cannon IS that powerful cuz... well, Freedom would lose its PS armor from turning off the reactor and he obviously got caught in the blast (Impulse lost an arm from it and I honestly dunno how Shinn was in any better condition for that matter).
Plus I'm sure shooting at a cannon that powerful mid-charge would decimate any ship its on, so Minerva should have been beyond repair when Kira did that.
Yeah, and Logos could have honestly just instead spent all that money on a bunch of Taunhassers cuz Destroys fall apart because of one permanently angry boi and biological CPUs perform worse than an average Natural.

BTW don't underestimate Freedom's PS armor because it withstood Genesis at point blank (with plot armor of course) but yeah it did endured it. and asides there were no other MS or ships that has PS Armor when got hit by Genesis (and Neo-Genesis in GS Destiny)
well it's not only Kira that had the plot armor treatment. Minerva also did had that when Kira destroyed the Tanhauser cannon mid-charge. i could only think of one way. that Minerva was built super strong. that it endured a crash landing on the Moon's surface without exploding. and the destruction of the Tanhauser is never a structural issue. remember Minerva's Tanhauser was destroyed twice. first by kira when they intervened the battle between Minerva and ORB Expeditionary Forces. and Mwu La Flaga at the Last battle with the 3 ship alliance, ORB Orbital Fleet and the Clyne Faction against the entire ZAFT army. Including Messiah

A bit of a correction for Shiro's plot armor: The bullet likely didn't have any shock wave beyond a loud cracking noise and a strong wind. Bullets are designed to fly through the air with as little resistance as possible, so they can fly as far as possible. Creating enough drag to kill a person with a near miss doesn't really help with that. You can find videos online of people demonstrating this with .50 BMG. One guy shoots it through a house of cards without knocking it over.
The thing that would have killed Shiro would have been the blast from the muzzle.
The explosion that occurred when the Freedom was destroyed was not its reactor exploding. It was the effect of the Minerva's Positron cannon firing on the water. Similar effect happened when the Earth Federation Mobile Armour blocked that beam and no one was killed in that explosion either. So, basically with the explosion obscuring everything, the heavily damaged Freedom fell to the water, protected from the blast by the last of its Phase Shift armour and Kira ejected then swam to the Archangel, leaving the Impulse hanging in the sky and absorbing the force of the blast using its own Phase Shift armour.
Yeah right, because the Minerva's Positron cannon is able to cause nuclear explosions, isn't it? don't try to excuse it, it was the Freedom's reactor that caused that big ass explosion, period.

Not defending the plot armor, but that explosion might not be from the Freedom. Before the scene of that big explosion, you can see a big explosion originating from where the Minerva fired its positron cannon. So if those explosions are the same, then that explosion came from Minerva's cannon hitting the Archangel.
@@medranodiego8641if you watch the story, archangel jettison a ballast tank of something before diving. That is what cause the explosion. Kira basically shielding shin from the blast.

another reason why Shinn is the best Seed character, minor plot armor (the time he get the 0 point explosion but still relatable because Impulse PSA still work and kira choice for using railgun instead chest beam against Destiny) but in kira case it just ughhhh especially freedom got stabbed by impulse so the heat of explosion can through in the hole
Now if you made one about crews the frieden definitely had more plot armor I think they give kira a run for his money in the plot armor department im more surprised that you can get captured multiple times by the federation and still be alive after destroying their bases and having your gundam destroyed not to mention a whole federation fleet appearing before atmospheric reentry I think the Frieden crew had really bad luck but when you realize that the crew is still alive now that's some crazy plot armor

Shiro's ball kill isn't too absurd IMO: The K-type ball was designed for construction, and it'a appearance and purpose implies that it's probably more heavily armored than the normal ball
Why would a construction ball have better armor than one meant for combat? it doesn't make any sense.
To make it more sensible, I would've had the guy take a prototype GM instead. It would've shown his mobile suit skills and why he got to get one of the 20 GRound Gundams

Huh, I had forgotten Kira got caught up in a Genesis blast at the end of SEED. And the excuse that Kira didn't lose the fight because he was trying to protect the Archangel is such a copout. I can't wait to see how he defies death yet again in the upcoming SEED movie.

I mean that 2nd time with Kira him piloting a Gundam with a Nuclear reactor might vaguely explain his armor/cockpit being shielded from radiation.
On top of the fact the MMP-78 magazine blowing should have turned Shiro into paste too.
Thing is, Kira wasn’t necessarily weaker than Shin because he was never aiming for any vital areas. Down to the last minute he was trying to avoid killing Shin and that is what Shin took advantage of to eke a victory. It is sorta arguable that Kira was holding back, after hours of fighting even before Shin got to the battle.
freedom is better at artillery range and is at a disadvantage in close range. which is where justice shines. that was the show's whole gimmick of the freedom and justice.
it's not a reach it would lose in a close range fight. it's definitely a reach kira (and shinn for that matter) would survive that blast. but nothing's impossible for kira Jesus.

Detonating a nuclear bomb isn't like setting off gun powder or TnT. Very specific conditions are required to cause the nuclear fission event we call a nuclear explosion. Strapping dynamite to a nuke and blowing it up wouldn't result in a nuclear explosion.
Also a nuclear reactor can't produce a nuclear explosion... It can melt down as it can no longer contain the heat it generates and it can explode due to pressure build up but it won't produce a fission event. What I'm getting at here is that Kira surviving the destruction of the freedom is a lot more believable if you consider that the resulting massive explosion well... Would not of happened.

The wombo combo of Shiro having so much plot armor that he just no-selled a machine gun barrage that even makes the *Gundam* flinch at times and him proceeding to basically anime nice guy his way into the enemy pilot's heart by having human decency in an anti-war series(and then even being the technical winner of their firefight... and becoming the "bIg StRoNg MaN" and 'protecting' her from the explosion of the Fed capital ship) just turned me off of 08th team as a whole.
I was *so hyped* to finally watch the Gundam Vietnam War, but finding out not only was it going to have a romantic subplot but this SAO-level power imbalance(provided by the plot) was going to be the dynamic just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I mean sure there's the complete phyco frame (which actually makes the RX-0 ranked just below Turn A) but from what I saw, the blast penetrated all the three barriers they created. The Colony Lazer is literally just the Gundam equivalent of a Death Star Ray, if that thing hits Earth it should do exactly what the BFG did to Mars in Doom. Yet to Mobile Suits stopped it.

The big thing about Patrick Colasaur compared to all the others, is that he was likely a parody of that trope and OO just went all the way with it. As for the others, it really is tough to top Wing and Seed for main character plot armor and even more with Kiruto Jesus-kun cause he could of died so much within Seed.

While I recognise the collective hate boner so many people have for Kira, I'd argue that if you're thinking that the arguments in the video hold up to scrutiny, then you haven't considered the evidence in terms of the levels of science and technology as of 70CE.
Firstly, with the duel between the Strike and the Aegis, the durability of the pilot suit isn;t being taken into account here. The fact is that Andrew Waltfeld survived far worse (an internal explosion where there was no phase shift to absorb any of the same type of explosion, he wasn't restrained in his pilot seat and restraints at the time of the explosion and it took weeks for him to get medical attention) yet he survived and recovered enough to be a mobile suit pilot within a couple of years. Furthermore, we know from that, that medical science had progressed to the point where not only was genetic engineering possible, but cybernetic prostheses were a reality. That is to say that the core biological trait of all coordinators was an enhanced immune system and more durable body as a direct response to Type-S Influenza. Yet the fact is that Kira was limp and unconscious when Lowe found him, Lowe carried him to Reverend Malchio, who put him in a medical capsule for critical care, at which point he was rushed to Aprilius, the PLANTS capital where the Kline family gave him what would have been the finest medical care that money could buy. Even then he was unconscious for days and possibly weeks, judging by how long it would have taken the Archangel to limp its way to Alaska. Even when he came to, he was bedridden and unable to move for days. Furthermore, as the Re:HOME does appear in SEED, the Astray mangas can reasonably be classed as canon, rather than a retcon.
As for number 2, there is a credible explanation. The fact is that most of the fleets that were affected by Genesis, were built around a presumption that nuclear radiation and the shielding that it would require, were no longer an issue.As such, the shielding around the cockpit and command centre, is highly unlikely to be shielded against gamma radiation. Conversely, the nuclear Gundams would have been built so that the cockpits were shielded against reactor leaks when they were sitting on top of a nuclear reactor. We know from the Rau's comments during the Battle of Panama, that the reason that Strike Daggers were so easily defeated by the Gungnirs, was because their EMP shielding was inferior to even that of the GINNs. It stands to reason that cockpit shielding against radiation would also be a design concern. In fact I'm particularly reminded of the scene in Pacific Rim, where it's noted that the 1st generation Jaegers were rushed into production so quickly that no one had considered the possibility of them being cancer-killer deathtraps. As such, I'd argue that the only 3 craft that could have potentially protected their pilots from getting fried in the Battle of Jachin Due, were the Freedom, the Justice and the Providence.
That leads me to the third instance. The fact is that the cutoff switch killing off the reactor immediately does indeed make perfect sense, due to how the N-Jammer works. The N-Jammer disrupts all nuclear chain reactions instantaneously, while the N-Jammer Canceller acts as a protective shielding device to protect the chain reactions of a nuclear reactor. Once the N-Jammer Canceller is deactivated, that protection stops and the chain reaction should reasonably stop with it. In fact we have a real-world example of an instantaneously stopping chain reaction as I understand it, in the form of pebble bed reactors. Pebble Bed Reactors have no emergency cut-off fail-safe systems, because they don't need them. They rely on a principle known as Dopler broadening, which states that the hotter a nuclear reactor runs at, the more space needed between atoms to allow for a chain reaction to be able to continue. The Dopler broadening that the reactor pebbles are designed around has a nominal operating temperature of 800-1200 degrees Celsius, while the graphite shielding has a melting point of 2000 degrees. However the pebbles themselves have been designed so in the event of a coolant failure, the moment the temperature rises to 1600 degrees Celsius, the spacing between atoms is too small to allow chain reactions to continue, and so the nuclear reactions are stopped dead in their tracks until the reactor cools down a nominal operating temperature. There's no reason to imagine that the N-Jammer Canceller and its effects wouldn't operate in a very similar manner. Incidentally, if you're wondering what the heck I'm talking about with pebble bed reactors, google "let a thousand reactors bloom" to find a 2004 wired article, which does a great job of explaining this real world technology.
As for surviving the explosion, the thing to note is that what would have exploded, was most likely the battery used as an energy buffer, which makes the explosion no worse than what Kira and Athrun both survived when the Aegis self-destructed. However even then there's another thing to note, which is how valuable the pilots of these units would have been considered. We know that the nuclear Gundams were intended for the aces of the ZAFT millitary, meaning that you're talking about the highest trained and most skilled pilots of ZAFT. Given that the pilots at that level would be just as rare and valuable as the nuclear Gundams themselves, and far harder to replace, there's a strong likelihood that the pilot's compartment on them was heavily reinforced to protect the pilot from the suit exploding as much as possible.
As for number 4, as it's established, any Natural wouldn't have survived it, but Kira isn't a Natural, he's a Coordinator and as I already noted, it;s an established fact that Coordinators, as a direct response to Type-S Influenza, were genetically engineered to have superior immune systems and therefore by reasonable extension, had bodies which could take far more of a punishment than naturals, while also being far more easily able to heal.
Arguably when you're talking about plot armour, the question which someone should always ask is “is this plausible in universe” and the answer with these is essentially yes. In fact I'd argue that Heero Yui surviving the Wing self-destruction is way-more of a Lazarus moment than Kira's brushes with death. As such, I'm simply not convinced that when it comes to Kira Yamato, there's enough lazy writing there to constitute plot armour.

A "perfect co-ordinator" simply refers to a coordinator who has successfully gestated in an artificial womb, which eliminates the variables caused by the mother's own womb. Yes Coordinators had more durable bodies better immune systems and they bodies were better at healing than most naturals, however given that it's fail obvious when you look into the CE timeline that Coordinators were created directly in response to the Type-S Influenza pandemic, that's pretty understandable. Also he hardly had low level regeneration, he was just lucky and had the benefit of the best medical care that money could buy.
The CE era had status capsules and cybernetic limbs as standard. Lowe found Kira within minutes of the explosion, where he was incapacitated and immobile, he was immediately placed in a stasis capsule and was flown to the PLANTS and he received the best medical treatment that money could buy. Even then he was unconscious for 10 days and bedridden for an extra 4. The reason the injuries don't look like they took that much if a toll is because the show time jumps in very subtle ways.
Also Patrick's survival in 00 always struck me as the writers making a parody of plot armor very very much deliberately.

I agree, I (unfortunately) put myself through Seed and Seed Destiny) and I was so dissapointed. Seed starts off great objectively, a rethinking of the UC....and then devolves into absolute nonsense with the MC.
When the sequel came out, I was cautiously optimistic since it was a new lead, and I actually liked the first arc until halfway though the show, Kira shows back up and the rest just becomes nonsense.
So when 00 came out and there were actually stakes at the end of season 1, it was a breath of fresh air. I really enjoyed that show specifically, especially with all the different characters and perspectives. I dont need a show to kill everyone, (IBO comes to mind, though that show was good too) but Seed almost became a parody of itself.
And to be fair, even 00 did have some level of MC plot armor

@@AssaultRider555 I'm pretty sure the Ball K variant is one of the more combat-ready balls. So ya i would expect that it has more armor on it. Which even then technically the ball is actually at the advantage. It has a smaller profile, it had better sensors, better thrust, acceleration, and was cheap and easy to produce. The next advantage lies in its curved armor. All those 120mm shells from the Zaku fuckin bounced off the round armor and for the most part he probably threw off the enemies aim by throwing that space debris. If anything Shiro was just ridiculously lucky that none of the shots bounced into his equipment (which if you watch kinda did and busted up the ball a bit, none of the important bits tho).
The ball vs Zaku is def not a stretch and could totally not be plot armor and I would say most of his saving grace was just the fact the ball was round. The best plot armor moment for Shiro would have to be the EZ-8 being cut in half by the big ass laser cannon or him fighting Custom Gouf.

I'm surprised to hear that people call that show realistic. It was enjoyable and has the coolest gundam fight ever near the end, but there's absolutely nothing realistic about 90% of what happens on it, not that I remember at least. If I had to call a Gundam show/OVA realistic it would definitely be war in the pocket. That ova was so fucking good.
I absolutely question the skill of whoever wrote 08th team. Surviving the zaku point-blank shot was stupid, and could have easily been remedied by having the gun jam or be out of ammo or something. There, a million times more believable and they could've saved money on animation without the bloodborne dodge.

Totally, and same with his fight in Ep1. Treize did this same thing as that fighting the Leo Mobile Dolls to prove a point to the Romefeller Foundation. He ate almost the entire drum mags from three Leos without a scratch. And while the scene of him using his Leo to waste them was cool because it was one of the few times we see a Leo do something other than explode...he should have been dead already. But the Zaku MG in his face not harming him was retarded. I mean, the concussion of Dell's impact from his Zaku falling over was enough to kill him but Shiro ate that blast wave like it was a stiff breeze. Also, the force of the rocket he launched into Topp's crotch should have harmed him also.
