The Meme That Became An Esport - Competitive Shrek SuperSlam

- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- Shrek Super Slam was a game that was most definitely never design with esports in mind, but that hasn't stopped a community from coming together and create a competitive scene.
Video game spinoffs based off of a successful movie franchise often fail to deliver or are quickly forgotten, but in rare cases, they are able to stand on their own and even develop a niche competitive community.

I can't believe that out of all the goddamn games in the world, PlayStation All-Stars ripped off Shrek SuperSlam of all things.
This type of game is somehow popular with cartoon knockoff at the times (I play a Tom and Jerry game that’s basically that when I was a kid), so you have to trace your knockoff root far back to the lazy age of cartoon game
I was looking for this comment when they said that lmao still more tech than all stars 🤣
@@minhkhangtran6948 Was that game by any chance called Tom & Jerry in Fists of Furry?
@@ShadowStrikerTheLoneWolf Yeah that the one. God that game is just idiot fun for my idiot brain back then
Honestly PS all-stars wasn’t a bad game. It got shafted cause Sony didn’t put in the effort to get iconic characters from 3rd parties. No character from Final Fantasy (FF 7 to 11 were PS exclusive). Using emo Donte (DmC is multi-plat) instead of OG Dante who was an PS exclusive. Raiden is okay, but most people who rather have Snake. Lara Croft is missing. No Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, the mascot of the PS1 era is gone.
I know achieving licensing for these characters are difficult, but Sony definitely had the money to. Instead they just chose to cheap out and went with a half-assed roster, missing out on a bunch of PS icons.
Still hoping Sony make PS All stars 2. Lots of good exclusives came out in the PS4 era and most of them are first party titles (TLOS, GoW reboot, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodbourne, Death Stranding, Spider Man, Nioh, Persona 5...)
I used to play this game with my brothers and cousins. We literally used to create our own tournament brackets and we treated it like a real competition. Who knew an actual competitive scene existed though.
Would be hilarious if you brought your brothers and cousins once more when lockdown is over and locals start happening commonly again haha

This is really nice considering a lot of games like this, even a few really known competitive titles have barebones in-game tutorials on their mechanics.

I love how, similarly to Smash, Shrek Super Slam wasn’t designed to be a highly-competitive esport, it just became one.
No one is a real fighting game, the other is a party game with Nintendo characters.
@@buzter8135 Ive always found that argument to be really peculiar. Yeah Smash is a party game. That doesnt mean it isnt also a fighting game. It's a game where you fight people, not sure what other qualifications you need. Is mario party not a board game because its a party game? Is Minecraft not a sandbox game because its a survival game? There's crossover between genres all the time.
Furthermore, what exactly does party game imply? That groups of 4 can play together? Because if you need more than that, then mario party isn't a party game (except 7, I think? One of those could have 8 players). But if 4 is all you need, then any halo or COD with splitscreen is a party game, which means it isnt an FPS by your logic. 'Party game' seems like less a defined genre to me, and more a quality that a game can possess which is strictly to its advantage: the option to host a group of players on the same system and screen.
Also, unless you were responding to a comment that has since been deleted, you are replying to a currently unedited comment which makes no reference to the term 'fighting game', with 'No, one is a real fighting game, the other is a party game with Nintendo Characters'. Seems like a weird place to bring it up, as if to correct somebody.

This game has a really special place in my heart. I had really good times playing it solo, with my siblings, family and friends. It was such a blast. I passed a lot of afternoons trying to complete the Mega Challenge mode, and the Story mode was fun for a kid who didn't understand english.
But ultimately, it was a gift from my grandmother who just passed away. She didn't knew it at the time, but it would bring me a lot of fun memories.
Thanks, Mamá ♥️

The way you describe Shrek SuperSlam makes me think the game was way ahead of its time, despite being made in 2005. Now I wanna play it...
I didn't realize this game was played competitively because of how broken some characters are, but the community seems to have developed some tech and made rules to make the game playable at a high level. Good on them.
"To win the match, you have to land 4 infinites in a row." What a chad game
i literally played this game on stream as a joke with my friends and we had a ton of fun. its actually a pretty decent game
Wouldn’t it be funny if we ran this game in our local Smash scene hahaha
Yes we’re gonna try
Friggin' LOVED this game back in the day, it gave 12-year-old me endless hours of giggle fits and fun. Now almost 27, I smile seeing this game having such a dedicated community of players who go hard in the paint to learn the ins and outs of a title I would have never expected, but loved. Also the music is rad. Overall, I'd say even without the esports following, it all adds to an experience that is weird to the point of turning around towards awesome.
This is like, actually a cute more 3d version of melee and the camera even follows you. Extreme free jank the game, broken but held together at least for being playable and mildly balanced
I enjoyed Shrek Super Slam as a kid but I'd never have expected this kind of resurgence or development. It was fascinating to learn about and a great video overall. I'm am surprised that it is compared to Super Smash Bros so often when you'd think the go-to comparison would be the Power Stone series.
This was one of the few games i remember my dad getting me. Its aged decently surprisingly

Love how they'd rather do a video on Shrek Esports than Rocket League lmao
BECAUSE ROCKET LEAGUE DON'T HAVE LAYERS
But seriously it's probably because RL kinda doesn't fit the theme of the series. RL is one of the most popular esports titles which have been covered by others so they can't really offer anything new to say.
But I'm sure they will eventually find an aspect of RL esports that needs to be shed light upon *cough* like missing a whole ass market *cough*.

Reminds me more of Power Stone, to be honest. The "get points by defeating your oppenents with supers" was something that PlayStation All-Stars would use as its main gameplay mechanic.
I hate how much sense this all makes.
Since Shrek is a parody of Disney movies, it makes sense that Shrek Super Slam parodies competitive fighting games
I like shrek because of its mocking every naive ideal of fairy tale.

Only fitting that Academy Award winning and Library of Congress preserved film Shrek has an esports worthy game.

I got this game for PS2 at the Paramount, CA swap meet and just being so excited to return home to pop it in and play. Being a fan of the competitive melee scene this makes me laugh 😂
Tech in every game is just a fancy way to say "Glitches we've learned to abuse".
Wait, is that the magic mirror playing Atari Pitfall at 7:18? Okay that's a pretty awesome detail.
For a franchise that's 20 years old, this deserves a video!

This game honestly needs a remaster both to cater for the e-sports pros and the people who had this in their childhood.

How does a Shrek game have this much depth
A lot of *deep* gameplay mechanics in a lot of games are surprisingly unintentional. Usually the result of a bug, a fix to the bug, or just a workaround.
Even the most widely known deep gameplay mechanics, the combo system started as a bug for Street Fighter. You can watch Akshon's video on the topic: ruclips.net/video/iujsL6jMME0/видео.html
