The Puzzle Game That Became A Fighting Game - Catherine

- When one thinks of an esport, a game like Catherine isn't what typically comes to mind.
Developed by Atlus, Catherine is a cross-genre video game divided into two parts, a social simulation where the player as Vincent Brooks makes choices between the women in his life and a series of nightmare segments where one must apply puzzle-solving skills to navigate through three-dimensional towers.
While not originally developed with esports in mind, a competitive scene began to develop around the game's multiplayer mode. This is the story of Catherine esports.

It took me literally years after the game was released to even know that a multiplayer mode existed. Even after watching multiple 'complete' reviews of the game it wasn't mentioned once.
That is until I suddenly saw it at EVO and even knowing literally nothing about the game or how it was played, picked it up from a spectator perspective and suddenly found it fuckin' seat grippingly hype.
I got into atlus games in about June of this year with p5, and I swear the same thing happened to me, literally nobody mentioned this in the reviews I saw

They'll all probably be back after the vaccines get shipped worldwide
I literally just got Full Body and now competitive Catherine is a thing and wanna try just for fun (even though I'm not much of a competitive game person), but even finding a random person to play with online seems impossible ^^;

I am so happy that there is a competitive scene for Catherine. I always though that the skill ceiling was pretty high for a puzzle game, but I didn't even think about how _mind-bogglingly_ hard it must be to master it in versus.
I remember when Catherine first came out. It was one of my favorite games of all time. Today I find out that it has a competitive scene. Which I shouldn't be surprised, but now I'm so interested.
Even if you don’t wanna play Catherine(Full Body) competitively, I still recommend playing it! The puzzles are fun, albeit a bit difficult(thought there are easy, medium, and hard modes with Classic and Remix modes, allowing for you to play as you want), the social-life simulation part is endearing, the story and it’s multiple endings are great and add to replayability. It’s just a good time!

Ah the memories I have from watching youtubers play this game back in 2011. Still remember the music.
It's sad how Nintendo won't even help out their community and Atlas will full-on sponsor a Puzzle Game as a Fighting Game.
Nintendo what happened? I'm clueless
@@muammarraihan9351 Nintendo has been wanting to shut down local events for Smash Bros. Melee, Ultimate, and PM for the longest. After covid hit online was required for Tournaments, so after someone made a fan mod for Melee that allows you to play online (that’s 100% legal for use by anyone) they tried to take it down and say it was due to the fact they were using a mod, but even back in 2013 (before online for smash existed) they tried to prevent EVO from streaming Melee even though the Melee community had to raise money for Breast Cancer awareness to even be able to play at EVO. They Shut down PM a mod for Brawl because according to them it was ruining their profits.
@@kenniethjimenez2823Ah, stupid Nintendo. Why they always have to be so weirdly uptight about their IPs is beyond me. Fostering a community around your games brings in new players, which brings in further potential profits
Im so glad you made a video anout this. I remember when me and my friend found out about competitive catherine being a thing and thinking it was the funniest shit, but its so cool honestly we both love the game
This actually looks pretty fun. I wonder if the developers will ever consider a standalone version with more options for customizing rules and things, more game modes, and support for more players.
Oh and online multiplayer of course.
I think full body had online, but it sucks. But yeah, I agree. This game has a lot of potential and while I think it's unlikely I think they should make a version with both Classic and Full body multiplayer modes, as well as the other stuff you mentioned.
Also, as a big fan of Atlus' games even before Catherine, I'm surprised and extremely glad to hear there's such an unexpectedly passionate competitive scene for this game. Atlus is a name I never thought I'd hear in eSports, since they mostly make single player RPGs. And it's literally a game about cheating, name a more ironic combination. If you want a good JRPG I highly recommend the newly released Shin Megami Tensei V for Nintendo Switch.
Wow... I loved this game when it first hit the shelves on PS3. This is absolutely amazing!
The people got bored of speedrunning devorce so now they play this game competitivly.
Catherine has been my second favorite game forever.
Well, What's your first favorite?
I mean, if you're going to talk about Catherine, you should do an expose on the rise of Beyblade tournaments at FGC events. See Beys spin in person at CEO in 2019 was one of the most hilarious things I've ever witnessed.

I LOVED watching this game on Twitch but one day I suddenly didn't find any tournaments any more. I thougth that Atlus killed it with Full Body. Glad to know it's still alive.
Catherine is one of my favorite games of all time. I would love to find a multiplayer community to practice with. This sounds really cool.

That hug at the end was incredible.
Me after reading the title: So, it's the story of a game that started as a fighting game ending as a platformer, or is just that a puzzle platformer got a fighting game spin off?
Me after watching the video: wtf???
It's a puzzle game with fighting style elements according to the people talking. It's always been a puzzle game at it's core.
totally a puzzle game but the players in online aim for killing the other player instead of finishing the puzzle first so its considered a fighting game even when it isnt.

1:25 the way this is phrased makes it sound like Katsura Hashino was the sole director of Megami Tensei games.
He only directed one Shin Megami Tensei game, SMT 3 Nocturne. The other Megami Tensei games he directed were spinoffs like the first Digital Devil Saga, and the trilogy of Persona games after the first Persona trilogy.
These communities are so heartwarming to watch, i can't explain it
Thats really wild. I always wondered how there was enough interest in the game to make full body. Now I understand. Was always one of my absolute favorite games.
What I find lacking in these videos is the technical stuff. There's a lot of statements, but no nitty gritty of how x bug worked or what principles of FG Catherine possesses
I experienced this game through Cry's (I think that that's the RUclipsr's name) gameplay of it uploaded here on RUclips. It impacted me well, I was feeling like suffocating when Katherine was leaving.. The main character, can't remember his name anymore.
It felt like suffocating that after Katherine left him because he fucked around with Catherine, he was in the underground and enjoying himself. The sad thing is that the perfection that is Katherine was seemingly totally forgotten by him and that was that route's conclusion.
Cryaotic? Apparently he did shit with minors, I just found out 😭
Lovely spotlight on my favorite competitive scene and all my fav competitive bros. Really missed everyone this year, so it was nice to see all that past event footage ^^
Here's to hoping 2021 brings some new opportunities, and that Switch release boosts the scene even more.
I’ve been meaning to play this game for so long - this just pushes me to finally do it
As a qa tester for the game in the US. This game mode was always about killing or blocking opponent. No race ended at the top lol. One stage is just a race to the bottom to make half the map fall.
If a game is truly good, it will eventually shine through and get players. It's amazing to see people still playing 20 year old games like Melee or Age of Empires 2. Catherine still has a long future ahead of it.
I remember first seeing the game in 2014/15 when a channel I followed on twitch for smash weeklies in MD/VA started having it on streams sometimes. Now I’m a big persona fan, and I’ve been playing through Full Body casually on my switch. Always love hearing the history of these scenes.
Wonder how much begging is needed for the devs to add in online multiplayer, or standalone version. Or maybe another studio to make something similar lol
Played Catherine Full Body for the first time when it came out on the Switch and the puzzle gameplay is strangely addicting.
Fanime 2012 will forever be the best Catherine tournament.
I remember last year my smash bros tournament had a catherine tournament. That was fun got me to buy the game a couple months later. I remember getting into semi finales. I give catherine a 9/10 needs more salt
It did what?! I've been playing this game for Years and never knew of this scene.
Fuck! You mean home state is one of the best places to play too?!?! BTW, because of the long time accent we pronounce it like "Mare-uh-lind" and not "Mary-land". It's like the old joke, how do you know they're not from Baltimore? They pronounce the T. Locals say it as "Ball-duh-more", think Voldemort.
Anyway, point being, thanks for the heads up. I can get on the inside of this scene relatively easily.
