The Most Mechanically Deep Baseball Game? - Mario Superstar Baseball

- Depth is a critical part of any successful esport. Players need to feel rewarded for pouring hundreds of hours into mastering a game; just look at how far games like Melee have gone.
But today, we’ll be exploring an unlikely candidate for the title of deepest Nintendo esport, and possibly a deeper sports game than any Madden or FIFA you can find. This is Mario Superstar Baseball.

Hey that’s me! Thanks so much for having me Akshon, it was an honor to speak about the game I’ve put so much time and love with. Long live Mario Superstar Baseball! BOWSER WINS GAMES!
heck yes go dinger city!!
City Hall must be so proud of his son for being a founding father of competitive Mario Baseball.
@@bigboybunter3417 I was so shocked to watch a random youtube video in my recommended and see City Hall
Do y’all host Mario baseball tournaments? I’ve been playing this game since i was 8 I am now 23 and still play this game in my free time. This game is by far my all time favorite and I would love to be able to play others that are good at the game Bc people that i teach just don’t quiet understand the IQ of the game?
Bring this game to Nintendo switch!
I love seeing these small, more obscure games have a competitive scene. It's so cool imo
omg is that THE pirhana plant??? Hope you're added in the next MSSB patch
Especially Mario super star baseball. One of my favorite games to play competitively with friends, and there is a science to it, like everything is flawless in my opinion
@@jaykay4116petey piranha is better
Hey that's my old basement! MSSB and Dinger City are both the real deal when it comes to a fun, competitive ebaseball scene! Super happy to be a part of it so come check it out and learn about this great game ⚾🚂
I really adore how this channel started off as an Overwatch League play-by-play and highlights only channel, and evolved into this open minded relm that broadened it's horizons including obscure and often forgotten/overlooked games and genres! It's honestly such a delight learning about a community that has been around for a while and just how far they've taken a game that they love.
Top 5 fav channels on RUclips easy! Keep up the great work guys. Love looking forward to all your videos.
Wow, thank you so much for following us and our content over the years!
@@Akshonesports totally agree, although im not gonna lie, I still look towards when the season for OW comes out so I can watch your OW vids again :) also, any plans for looking at lol at all?
Wow I didn’t expect to actually be in this video but there I am! So honored to be included here as a part of Dinger City! This game is so incredible and I’m so happy to see it getting such a big spotlight! It makes a small time RUclipsr like myself feel like I’m actually making a difference. Thank you!
Pog
so excited for you guys!! 💖
@@StarlordHD316 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The pitching in this game is crazy deep as well, you can throw sliders, change ups, and fast balls, with each character excelling in their own regard. Super cool video covering a fire game!!
Like almost every baseball game?
@@TheVolginator I mean yes, but please note that this is a Nintendo game and Mario game at that. Such a game usually wouldn't be thought of as having "deep" mechanics.
@@Ok_Eul-Tae then call the video the most mechanically deep Mario sports game? This game isn't deeper than Super Mega Baseball or like... any other baseball game lol. Like yeah i know that's not the point of the video but why call the video that then
@@sol_in.victus Well it's one part clickbait another part just posing a question.
does Sluggers share this depth in gameplay with its predecessor? I know it has a deeper roster but I’m wondering if they watered down the in game mechanics
First off, thank you for this video. Watching this feels so surreal. Our community rarely ever gets big recognition.
As the co-lead modder of this game alongside PeacockSlayer, and as the person who runs our ranked netplay and most of our online tournaments, i must say now is the perfect time to get into the scene. We’re still learning a ton about the game and exploring what the game has to offer, which is something that you can’t say about most gamecube games these days. This community has really changed my life for the better. Thank you again for the video!
Love this game and the community! The online scene is only going to grow and get better! Lots more to come in the future!
Thanks for having me Akshon and letting me talk about a game that means so much to me!

Thank you for making this video and including some of my footage in the video (MattyIceFalco). Mario Baseball has incredible depth and we would love to see new people join our community.
Deeply upset they didnt show off that monty mole becomes usain bolt while holding the ball on defense. He could play center field and sprint the ball to home plate before bowser could tag up from third base and go home.
So i live about 40 minutes from New Paltz, to see that a local school contributed to this is mind blowing
Tbh we do meetups on Long Island sometimes (probably one in the summer coming up) if you'd want to drive down from there to meet some people and play in person!
Spencer Williams I’m actually in the Fishkill area so that’s somewhat outta the way for me unfortunately. You should consider getting in contact with Contender in Wappingers or or the Good Game Lounge in West Nyack, there’s a decent chance they’d be willing to host events
Ooooh taking note of that, thank you!
Mario Superstar Baseball and Super Mario Sluggers are underrated. Game’s are GOATED. I grew up on Sluggers personally, but I still enjoy Superstar Baseball.
This game is so infectious. Showed up to play once and it hooked me right in! The people in the community are honestly the real gem of it all--the Dinger City boys, modders, Netplay peeps, and speedrunners do so much work behind the scenes to make hype content and a healthy competitive environment. It's been said, but join the Discord and you'll have so many people ready to talk about the basics or advanced parts of the game with you.
Absolutely incredible that this grew from a basement in New Paltz to a channel that raised over $12,000 for charity is amazing. Seeing the growth and effort everyone in the club puts in is awesome and I can’t wait to see where it takes everyone next!
wow it was really nice of you to make this video for me specifically and exclusively
jokes aside holy shit there's a fucking comp scene for this game? I love this game! That's fucking hype!
When you have to say "permutations" to describe something in the game, you know its deep
or means you are pedant, you can say combinations
Easily one of the best video game communities out there. Constant hilarious content, new modding discoveries and netplay tournaments this is a great time
dinger city is such a fun channel, cannot recommend enough!
The Mario baseball games and especially the sequel on the Wii, Mario Super Sluggers, were ones I loved to play when I was younger. My only gripe I remember having was sometimes the motion controls were a little finicky. It’s really cool to see the original getting more love after all this time!
YOOOOOOOOOOOO IM SO HAPPY THAT YOU MADE A VIDEO ON THIS GAME
Yellow Toad
This really hit me with nostalgia. I loved this game and played it with my brother growing up. I’ll love to check this out.
Join our discord! You can find it on Dinger City’s video descriptions. Have a new netplayers tournament coming up soon.
I used to swear by how good this game was. I worked at a chain video game retailer and I would recommend it to so many people. I'm glad to see my intuition was right. This game was always so fun and felt so complete. I'm so glad to see a resurrection of the title, and a newfound appreciation for it!!
Oh man, the throwback... Funny thing is that I'm from France, and so when somebody offered me a copy of Mario Superstar Baseball I had NO idea what baseball was and how the fuck were you supposed to play that game. Took me over a month to completely understand how to score points, lol
I had a cracking time with it, tho. Incredible to see there are guys out there trying to turn into a competitive game
This video is incredible and so is the scene for this game. We're always working hard to try to grow the scene and this finally shows that it's paying off. If you're interested in the game, the MSSB Club Discord is a great place to start!
Omg is that Mr Joe from Mr Joe's Baseball Show???
@@jaykay4116 You must be thinking of someone else
@@MrJoesBaseballShow No way, this is definitely Mr. Joe of the Mr. Joe's Baseball Show, a channel that delves deeper into the meta of the game and even helps you learn how to play against others online! :O

Gen's All Superstars run is the reason I rediscovered this game.
Oh it's the RUclipsr from fortnite
That name alone is a massive red flag

I wolud never expect a game like this having an esport
Oh we have one! I have played every baseball game known to man and this game is so deep and has the biggest skill gap!
Me and my brother played this a lot on the Wii,Its such an underrated Mario sports game. It deserves a comeback on the Switch!
“got that thang on em” will be nightmare fuel
I'm telling you man, look into the Panel de Pon competitive scene! 😜We've built an entire fangame called Panel Attack so we can play online with rollback netcode, and there's so much more depth to PvP than most people realize!
What a great way to spend Saturday morning.
6:05 - Was anyone else expecting a bait-and-switch here?
Dinger City makes me so happy, and I would love for more people to experience the most earnest content I've ever seen in my life.
Bowser wins games
This game is so hype and probably the most underrated Mario Sports title. Dinger City is also goated.
How are you able to make me want to try every GameCube title.
No Nintendo, don't take this community down you ingrates!
This game getting the love it deserves on YT lately!
Bringing up the controversial wobbling ban? A fine move, a rude fine move.
one of the best games ever made!
Facts,man
My favorite channel uploads a video on my favorite game? Beautiful
No one can hit dingers off my cursed dry bones pitching…and if you think you can join our discord and challenge me on rio!
hey that’s critnick and dinger city !!!!!
Watching this community grow over the years has been incredibly exciting! I can’t wait to see where they go next!
It's awesome to see this community I've been following have such a nice video made about them.
Yo, a Team full of Bowsers will be wild!
Not only the characters are full of personality thanks to animation but the mechanic is deep! Modern games should be more like this.
is nobody going to talk about the keyboard gamecube controller in the clips
The Mario Baseball series does not get anywhere near the attention and love it deserves. It's probably the best sports series with Mario in it.
Perfect video.
I love and loved this game so much thanks for making a vid on it!
*video not vid. Too lazy to write the other two letters? Pathetic. 🤦
Let’s go, I love to see the best baseball game ever getting some love
0:08 I literally left out the same laugh he did lmao
So glad to see this sick game get the support it deserves ❤️
Since you've done a video on the mario baseball games, you have to do a video on mario strikers and mario strikers charged. Mario tennis aces is also pretty competitive
Superstar baseball was before my time so I played sluggers a lot, that game was a bop with its story mode, it seems to have a shit ton of depth to it aswell so im a little curious why superstar baseball got so much more spotlight.
Sluggers can be considered the Brawl of the series. It's the better casual game, but a lot of the depth that Superstar Baseball has is lost in it's sequel. Also, the scene for Superstar Baseball is much more focused on the competitive aspect of the game, while other channels prefer to play Sluggers more casually.
@@PkKirby Yeah that makes sense, it’s just weird that the video didn’t even mention the sequel not being as competitive
@@taccm386 I think they wanted to put the spotlight solely on MSSB and Dinger City, if they had more time to talk about it I'm sure it would come up.
I've loved this game since it came out, didn't realize there was such a dedicated community. One of the best, if not best baseball games ever.
The Game was my childhood 😮💨
I’m still hoping for another entry in the series
YESSIR MORE MARIO BASEBALL LOVE!!!!!
Tbh if I made a party game I'd be honored but also slightly annoyed that people are getting so good at a game meant to be chill. I'd be honored cuz that would mean people loved my game, but annoyed because the game itself was supposed to just be a nice game to play and ruin your friendships lol.
Sold. The game looks sick. Ps2 -Gamecube had some great games huh
As someone who used to speedrun this game, this makes me want to create a league with my friends so bad. Great video!
What an underrated game
I love seeing old games like Mario Superstar Baseball being rediscovered. These games are the best example of Bushnell's Law.
Speaking of Mario sports games the recent announcement of a new Mario Strikers has me PUMPED
I had this video sent to me and genuinely assumed the title was a joke. How wrong I was. Outstanding video for an apparently outstanding game.
Man I absolutely love this channel and series. I don't think I'll ever tire of seeing these grassroots communities with such crazy levels of love for their games. Akshon, y'all do such an amazing job highlighting these groups in the best ways to get larger audiences aware and hyped for them.
Really rooting for the Dinger City Squad to get their personal online version of Dolphin up and running; Slippi has shown for melee just how big of a game changer it can be.
Check up Project Rio made by LittleCoaks and PeacockSlayer. They worked tirelessly on it and it's a game-specific version of Dolphin. WAY better online play with it. There's a discord channel about setting it up!
Your best video in a while! This deserves a follow-up! Loved this one so much
We’d love a follow up!
Its nuts to me how far this community has come. Truly a game unlike any other and while I don't have the time to dedicate myself to the netplay scene as much as I used to, it warms my heart so much to see this community get the love it deserves.
You are an esport gamer?
This is my fucking childhood
I loved this game as a kid! It makes me happy it’s not just me
Love Mario Supra Star Baseball. Terrific game, good community. Fun times All around.
Wow. I've never heard of this game before, but the mechanics looks really fun.
I kinda want to play it now.
Come play! Join the discord and follow Dinger City on RUclips!
We plan on having a tournament for new netplayers soon too!
Grew up playing Super Sluggers but I'd love to get into this game one day
I feel like Pokémon the only esports Nintendo supports. We need a video on them
Let's GOOOOOOO, my favorite game getting some shine
I love seeing these types of videos on communities that I did not even know existed. I have this game, I'm gonna play it. Also, I'm definitely gonna check out th3se events these guys throw! So cool!
I had literally no idea this game had a competitive scene. That's actually crazy to me, I've always liked the Mario Baseball games the most.
This game is so good - I used to play it all the time as a kid, and I once played an intense match that went into extras against my college buddy. I walked him off in like the 11th, and I popped off so hard I cut my hand on my chair a little bit! I'll have to look into it on Dolphin sometime.
The MSSB Discord has a setup guide for it if you ever need, you can find the link for it on reddit or in the description of Dinger City videos 👍
Oh wow……I never expected a Mario Baseball game to be considered competitive, speak less of a dedicated community. That’s so awesome!
I used to play this game all the time as a kid with my older brother, I never really liked sluggers so even after that came out we'd come back to it. Never knew it was so deep with such a rich grassroots scene, so cool
7:30 I like how yoshi doesn’t have anyone in the red except for bowser and kamek , and even still they’re light red, real friendly guy
One of my favorite childhood games - thanks for bringing this back into my memory
I have this game. Its the only baseball game i can tolerate. It is pure QUALIT-EEEE!
Wait, there's a comp scene for this game?!
I totally forgot about this game until now. I remember playing it so much as a kid. Definitely got me interested in the scene a little.
The Wii Mario Baseball is one of my favorite games ever made, glad to see games like it having a scene
Although this game came out in Europe, the Wii game Mario Super Sluggers didn’t. Baseball is nowhere near as popular here as in Japan or the states, but it still baffles me to this day that they just boycotted the region entirely!
You guys are fuckin rockstars. I don't even play a lot of these games but I LOVE that you're so deadset on spotlighting them. Stay based y'all!
I have a friend I played this with on a weekly basis for years on a competitive level. When Sluggers came out, it was a bit of a disappointment because it just was not as good in that sense, there was less room for skill expression. The more we played Superstar BB, I think we realized it was a lot deeper than people gave it credit for. Even now, when we find the time to get together, it's what we do. I'm shocked to find there's a scene developed for it now, it's so beautiful to see it being modded and how much depth is truly being uncovered behind it. The detailed chemistry chart shown was stunning, I remember thinking it seemed like certain pairs like Mario & Bowser or Petey & Pianta had so much worse chemistry than others in some weird situations, but we weren't sure. It makes so much sense now to see there's unique values tied to each one. Thanks to those in the scene for all of the hard work that's gone into it so far, I never thought I'd see the day it reached a viable netplay era, we will definitely be checking it out. I look forward to seeing how it grows and how the meta develops from here!
I’m a huge Mario fan.
I’m a huge sports games fan.
I’ve never heard of this game; and I watched with a big smile on my face and awe in my expression. I need to play this. BADLY.
Video Review: S
This is a great video, showing off an awesome community and an awesome game.
The first ever S rank…
loved this games as a child !
I remember playing this at my friends house and kept getting random home runs with red toad, to the point that it became a running joke.
I’d miss home runs with big heavy characters and then toad would come on and get a star hit on the first swing nearly every single time. It’s made me go and think about how good toad was in other games, like in mario sports mix where he is the best character I know, and smash bros. The one time toad wanted to help peach, she became the best character on release. Are there any other games where toad just fucking dominates?
In SMB2 (the american one) hes the strong and fast character, highest run speed in the game and has the fastest turnip pulling speed, all at the downside of his jumps being short and bad. This carried forward into some modern games (Mario 3d World bein the best example)
I havent played Mario Baseball myself but, I imagine Toad might have shitty fielding to represent this? Making him bad at jumping to catch balls n such
@@WaluTime No, actually. Hes supposed to be a quick and weak character, but there’s no change in jump height/catching. Toad in general has four variations, with red being the all rounder, but all of them are fast and don’t hit very hard. They are great at running bases and catching balls.
Star hits (big home runs) are just frame perfect swings afaik, the bigger the character the more lenient the swing. Red toad would have a basically perfect timing required to star hit consistently, but he always did more often than not. He either struck out or got a home run for me.
His “master of all” skillset also applied to mario sports mix, where he was quick and weak but had the best catch and super in the game (which gave him basically guaranteed hits/points that leveled him out), and in smash bros ultimate peach was ALSO a perfect well rounder on release.
Toad is basically unstoppable in a competitive environment, I swear.
This was wonderfully made. Used to play this with my neighborhood friends when I was younger. What a blast from the past!
Nintendo developers are secretly into eSports.
I still own this game after getting rid of so many other gamecube classics... it's a real gem. Fun to see an in depth video about the game
I loved Mario Superstar Baseball and I wish we got another game like it today.
I had no clue there was a competitive community for this game and that the mechanics were so deep
Mario Strikers next please! Great video.
