    Love how Mario is probably one of the most well rounded fictional characters in terms of sports.

    GameCube really has some of the greatest games. It's wild how many of them have a budding or thriving scene.

    There's a reason that I still play this game nearly 19 years later-speedrunning it for 5 years, creating a TAS for it and more.
    If there are hundreds of fans hidden in the rough (lol) who are watching this, please hit us up. We want to make a competitive scene for this game. I have experience running the largest Super Rush competitive scene with a ranked ladder system, tournaments and a team of dedicated individuals. The same is just WAITING to happen for MG:TT :D
    Thanks to the team at Akshon Esports for this video! What an absolute jewel of a game. It will permanently remain in my top 3 games of all time, simply because the time I've put into it personally has led me down paths I would never change. Even my partner, the love of my life, exists in my life in part because of MG:TT, being recommended my stream years ago since speedrunning it was so niche. Just a reason why I'm still playing. :)

      It’s crazy that this video just came out, because I JUST bought a GBA to play through MG:AT to transfer my custom character over. The amount of love I have for this game is ridiculous.

      Setting up a MGTT tourney is actually very easy, especially in a LAN environment. Simply let them play it out like a real golf tourney. With however many Gamecubes you have, have a pair of players tee off. Once they both finish the first hole, the next pair starts, and so on. Lowest score wins as always. See? I have just created MGTT esports.

      World Tour is extremely overlooked, which is a shame because it was an amazing successor to Toadstool Tour and is filled to the brim with content and it even has a pretty cool online system where you can create online tournaments with your own rulesets. If online functionality is what held back Toadstool Tour from having a competitive scene, I feel like World Tour is worth looking into.

    I never had Toadstool Tour when I had a Gamecube, but I love how these games have communities that are keeping them alive. One other Gamecube game I'd like to see revived as an eSport is Wave Race: Blue Storm. That game was really fun and had some cool advanced skills for players who took the time to learn the controls. There might be potential there.

  • @MetalYoshiProGamer
    @MetalYoshiProGamer 2 года назад +6

    I really wish that was my PFP. That MetalYoshi art is badass!
    That aside, I'm super happy with how this turned out and all of my cohorts had fantastic insight. We are super welcoming and awaiting competitors both for speedrunning and for serious skins match play! All you need is the ability to run Dolphin with Netplay. Our Discord community, social media, and other resources can be found on the SRC page for Toadstool Tour. This is - all puns intended - a diamond in the rough.
    Massive thanks to Akshon Esports for the interviews and this presentation of the game and its community, and massive thanks to my cohorts keeping the spirit alive as I age and atrophy. Everyone keep doing what you're doing!

    Thanks so much for featuring me in your video, it was a great watch! The underlying complexity of what appears to be a simple Mario sports game on the surface, combined with varying strategies every time you play each hole that you already thought you knew how to tackle, are what keep me going after reaching what I thought were my goals with Toadstool Tour.
    A few years ago I tried this game out as a quick speedrun and left it to rest, thinking the game was too hard for me and that it it wasn't worth the time investment. I think a lot of people share that feeling when they give this game ago, because I was one of them too. Fast forward about a year or so ago and one day I decided I wanted to try and see how far I could push my own limits playing Mario Golf, and I realized that this game absolutely rewards the player for just grinding and grinding away better than most games out there do. The holes reward you for your course knowledge. All RNG is adaptable. Weather is able to be overcome. Proper shot selection gets better with time. Using putting and chipping scenarios being absolutely critical to finish off any minor mistake you made. It's a beautiful game to pickup, and I definitely recommend giving it a try. And it also helped me learn that its alright to not jump in headfirst sometimes, this game was there for me when I was ready. Other things in life will be there when you them to be too.

    Absolutely adore the charming opening you made for this video; great job on that and on the video as a whole. It was interesting to learn why the scene hasn't shifted towards the latest Mario Golf game but is there a reason why the 3DS game is ignored in favour of the GameCube entry?

  • @DylanMatthewTurner
    @DylanMatthewTurner 2 года назад +2

    I prefer the two click system bc it's not JUST a two click system. The accuracy is determined by the power and the terrain, so there's a different kind of strategy in not hitting as far sometimes in order to stay within a safe accuracy, or you can take the risk. If you have a three click system and just have to time it, there's no strategy anymore.

    Toadstool 🍄 Tour ... (✯ᴗ✯) I actually LOVE how each shot needs to be calculated and you can theroetically get out of almost any sticky situation IF you can time the 3 clicks.
    I remember having a situation even in Lakitu Valley where my ball was in the Semi-Rough and there were trees in the way. There WAS a way to basically curve the ball a BIT and hit it with a precise club and power to get past those and hit the Green immediately instead of having to hit AROUND them.
    But ... It was such a specific setup and you HAD to hit it perfectly or you hit the tree... And you're even in a worse spot.
    So much is happening at one time and the later courses really put your knowledge and skills to the test but they still have that Mario charm that we love it for. There is LITERALLY a course within' _Peach's Castle Grounds_ loosely based on Bob-Omb Battlefield from Super Mario 64, King Bob-Omb and all (before he became playable in Super Rush). How cool was THAT? And there were a few others like that and even a PIKMIN cameo in one of them.
    AND the player characters from the GBA counterpart could be brought over and that was really cool.
    Of course, we all remember the pain that was Congo Canopy... (๑•﹏•)

    No mention of Mario Golf World Tour? It's such a weird omission with how it's mechanically basically the same as TT, but it came with online and later with MG64 courses as DLC added on top of the already great base game. Is it because it's stuck on a (now basically dead) handheld?

    Jokes aside its cool to see you talk about Mario Golf on Gamecube; its probably the only Mario sports game for GC I haven't tried, but I guess it must be pretty good fun if it also has a scene like this. Now it would be cool too to see a coverage of NTM considering how that one also has a playerbase today and the controls are pretty nifty

    As much as I love Mario Golf (and I do REALLY love Mario Golf), I kinda feel like Toadstool Tour has one of the worst course designs in the series. Visually it’s nice, of course, but the actual course layouts are kinda messy.
    And ultimately, I find Hot Shots Golf is just an overall higher quality series, with very similar depth of gameplay, but with better course designs and a lot more content per game. Hot Shots 4 is especially excellent, and probably my favourite golf game of all time.
    The main thing Mario Golf has over Hot Shots is the Mario characters and presentation, which is of course hard to beat.

    • @JBasilix
      @JBasilix 2 года назад +3

      But there is random drift at maximum power. You can line your shot up however perfect you want with wind and rain already factored in but if you have to hit at max power it is pure luck if your shot actually makes it to where you want it to. Another thing that should be mentioned is the courses. The courses of the switch version are pretty boring compared to Toadstool Tour. I am pretty sure that is because of the inclusion of speed golf. Courses need to be simple so players can run to theyr ball. The last thing I think is a shame is that characters all shoot the same now. Before every character had a shooting arc that went left or right and flat or high depending on the character. Now every character is pretty much the same outside of speed golf
