He just doesn't understand. It wasn't only a tragedy. It WAS an injustice! They literally told the kids to stay in their rooms while the captain and staff escaped to safety. And then the press and government covered it up. If he knew the whole story, I think it would help him understand a little better. (He still may not appreciate it, but at least he would understand.)

Hi! Thanks for appreciating all the different viewpoints. I think it makes for interesting discussion!
Yeah so there are a lot of people out there who just don't know much about BTS or K-Pop. And they might come with all sorts of assumptions based on what they know - and that's what happened here. Sometimes it just takes some patience and the willingness to help others along the way to understand 1) how amazing BTS is and 2) how complex and layered the Spring Day MV is. So it's not completely his fault for coming off that way - he just didn't have all the info.
Thanks for understanding and for sticking around for the convo! Another deep discussion video drops tomorrow so that'll be interesting. But the one after that will be a lot of fun.

@@EEBeyond He still assumes the worst which is quite ignorant. I've had friends and seen reactors who, like this dude, didn't know anything about kpop (except that they're manufacturer groups), but they didn't immediately assume the worst of them as human beings and artists.
These preconceived notions in his thinking are the problem (studies are abundant in regards to this). I've learned that the problem with holding preconceived notions as being true is that they can lead us to very negative and critical beliefs about others and that can affect our behaviors toward others.
This dude's behavior (though honest it lacked any or all tact) is a clear reflection of his cognitive bias and stereotyping. And please understand, that while being gracious might be easier for you because he is your friend, for viewers like us, it would naturally be received with a different sentiment.
And though most Army would make the decision to be gracious since OP kindly asked, that doesn't invalidate viewers feelings when they (with reasonable cause) first take offense to the dude's behavior and words.

I can't believe him asking "They have trains in Korea?" Believe or not Korea is the most technologically developed country. They have trains which run faster than the ones in US. Even the California governor went to Korea to adopt the Korean train and technology to bring US. Fastest wifi in the world, the most advanced 5Gs everywhere, the very best subway systems in the world, very advanced medical systems, and so on...
Just because BTS is labeled as a boyband and from Korea, people have prenotion about them and thinking rather very lightly without knowing them. That's my pet peeve. Also he is ignorant of other countries cultures and political situations. If BTS bluntly write what they want to express directly about any situations involving government especially this incident, they would be in Black list and that could been the end of their career at that time in Korea. They even risked their career and physically visited victims' families and donated $ and that was a big risk for them. Since then, they have a new leader for the country and political silent rules have changed and gained a lot more freedoms nowadays.

I would highly recommend they watch the explanation by Italian Army. That video goes into more detail that addresses most of the issues the guy had. I think if he had of seen that and understood that the government at the time was attempting to silence and even blacklist celebrities for speaking out he would understand that just making this song and video was a HUGE risk for BTS. The captain telling those kids to stay put and not evacuate, people desperately wanting to to to save those still alive and being stopped...this was a massive trauma for the entire country.

Well, his perspective was not communicated very well. He does not understand the hardships they have endured and continue to endure to this day. He does not understand the SK culture, and why BTS could not come out and specifically criticize the gov, so in a creative way they were able to communicate how they felt. BTS has worked their asses off to get where they are and their music and lyrics are powerful.
All businesses need to make a profit, but BTS likened to a money making machine? like backstreet boys? That was a poor analogy the only thing in common with the western boy bands of the past, is they were all boys. BTS is nothing like those groups. Except for the last few songs in English, which are very poppy, BTS has a message, (watch the live performance of “Magic Shop”, inspired by JK, to their fans), a positive message. That is why they have a very strong and loyal fan base.

Hi! Thanks for understanding - he came with very little knowledge of kpop and so he spoke from what he knew, the western music industry. We may know that BTS isn't like Backstreet Boys but he doesn't know that yet. Tbh that's probably what a lot of Americans think BTS is. It takes patience, kindness, and time to both teach and learn about who / why BTS is different than American boy bands. They're so much more bigger than that. With profound messages and INCREDIBLE music.
At the time of this recording he had only heard three BTS songs. So we all have to give him a little bit of a break since he didn't know. That's also one of the great things about this loyal fanbase - ARMY is really good about educating others in kindness. And for the most part, a lot of these comments have been that (with a few exceptions). So thank you for being gracious with us.

And the captain and the crew got off and left them there!! The president at that time tried to cover it up!! This happened in 2014 and this song is still charting in Korea today!! Micheal Jackson focused on the environment, some focus on the drug epidemic. Art is about expression. Think of photographs of war. Someone got paid for that although it’s a horrible situation. But through their art medium they shared what was going on and informed the rest of us.

The song Spring Day is a hopeful song. The lyricism is beautiful and I think it was more a comfort song for the survivors. The beginning and throughout the MV focused on the feelings of the survivors i.e. guilt, confusion, numbness, loneliness, loss, anger, injustice etc, hence these are the feelings that represents winter. This song allows them to cope and be okay with moving on. I find it amazing how BTS actually thought about the survivors, usually the attention and emphasis is on who is to blame or who died and we all forget about those who have to live with the repercussions. Some wanted to commit suicide, some receiving therapy, some are demanding answers from the govt, some outcasted from society for actually surviving the tragedy, everyone is finding a way to cope. For them, winter comes more than once a year, but as the lyrics in the song mentions winter will pass and spring will come, so too will those happier days. This will be the constant cycle, this song is a reminder that no pain lasts forever.
RM once mentioned that if our pain was out of a scale of 100, if listening to their music could lessen the pain to 99, 98, 97, (just by a little) then their existence is enough. So although you may have believe they’re trying use this tragedy to gain profit, they’ve dedicated themselves to speaking up on behalf of their generation and leaving legacies for the next. Spring Day is a masterpiece, paying homage to the Sewol tragedy in the MV, allowing healing for the survivors and their families. BTS also fulfilled one of the wishes of the survivors, which was to not forget those who have died, this song since it’s release has not left the Korean top 50 charts.

i do understand where hes coming from and it kinda makes me sad that he has that automatic view that artists will deceive but bts have never been like that and i kinda wish people understood that bts is different from regular kpop and its not only about money for bts and bighit. sure that was part of it but they were doing this long before the checks were rolling in. other kpop groups may be about the money but bts was never like that. they risked being blacklisted many times not only for spring day but for am i wrong too and they always rose eyebrows with songs like gogo and baepsae etc
i also think they need to let go of western perspective because applying that to the east will automatically give you a biased view which then needs to be corrected when the expectations could just not be there from the start.
i think they should react to bts hardships 2013 - 2021 by xceleste so they can understand just how outcasted bts were and are to the point to them not caring about what others thought and needing to do things themselves like writing and producing cause they had to and cause they enjoyed it. bighit always wanted to change the industry and they did with bts. most of the rules and ways of kpop dont apply to bts because bang pd wanted them to be different and i understand besides from what they already know about western artists/groups plus what they probably have read about kpop by western media that theyre already fed a lot of wrong biased information but its still kinda frustrating having to explain and in a way convince people each time they learn about bts.
id also suggest reacting to the videos on bbygangs channel about bts and kpop in general and how western media distorts what kpop is even many kpop fans are misinformed about a lot of things. ill personally watch all the reactions to these videos cause like their perspective isnt completely wrong in all areas because it does apply to some groups/artists/labels in the kpop industry just not bts. No reason for people to get mad, he said what he needed to say and he made valid points. (edit: also he did seem like he went into this reaction with a biased mindset, he already had a formed opinion which will never get anybody anywhere) But I will say BTS is deep, that's who they are regardless, most of their work has a plot line. There is literally a story line that goes throughout their music videos. But that's what us fans like, we like to analyze and figure out the story line & the members like when we do so.
BTS has always talked about the wrongs of South Korea, specifically their government. They address things people in Korea simply are too afraid to do so. They have songs like N.O. that addresses how terrible the Korean school system is, pushing kids to work and work without thinking about the long term. Another song Am I Wrong, which got them blacklisted by the government at one point also called out the government and how shitty it is and basically the entire time was saying, "you did all of these things, so am i wrong for how i feel or what i say".
Spring Day was to bring awareness to the situation, the Ferry accident wasn't covered how it was suppose to be and the government told all those survivors to forget about it, they wanted to bring awareness to the situation with this song, which they did and now this song is one of their most impact and still hasn't left Korean charts to this day, years after.
Obviously, you don't have to like these types of songs but I'm just saying BTS is a group who speaks about certain topics, some being really heavy topics, every song they have created since 2013 has a meaning. It's hard for newer fans to understand but the members have all been through their shares of hardships in the world and they bring light to those hardships, everyone has different focal points when creating music, this is an example of theirs.

I like the reaction because it exposes what they have had to deal with the whole time. Some people just suddenly realized they're popular but didn't see the 16 hr days for years (since 2010) against these same knee jerk criticisms that got them to this point. Some people just want to go negative on something that's popular instead of considering why so many people of all demographics have come to love them.

The North Korea comment was so…American? Like, it took me years to learn this myself but to outsiders I’m sure the issue btw North Korea and South Korea is the biggest thing that should be on the minds of South Koreans
But in actuality, what I learned from South Koreans themselves is that they’re REALLY not worried abt North Korea. I remember a couple years back NK started testing their missiles again but SKs weren’t fazed saying “they do this every couple years”
There is nothing I’ve learned from my study of Korea or talks with Koreans to insinuate that they fear NK. Not anymore anyway. IN FACT, the majority of Korea just wants the 2 nations to reunify. And their current President has made great efforts to get closer to reunification.
So, I just thought that was interesting (if not a little disrespectful) bc here comes an American telling a Korean what “impactful” topic they should be making music abt, meanwhile Koreans silently underwent a mini revolution thanks to this tragedy. THATS why SK loves this song so much, and why it hasn’t fallen off the charts since it was released. It just felt very telling of how our worldviews impact our thought and speech of how other countries and ppl should behave.

I mean - yeah. In a lot of ways, Americans just don't know the history of other countries. And so a comment like that can come across very rude and/or ignorant - but tbh I personally don't know much about their war or border or viewpoints of north/south citizens. I mean, besides watching Crash Landing On You, idk what to think about North Korea either. So thanks for filling me in a bit bc I had no idea.
But as for that whole last paragraph - I completely agree with you. I felt like the comment was severely out of place and I knew the song meant a lot to the country. I know a lot of Americans can come off that way, but I think that's where we have to correct them. Lovingly (but firmly) correct them. Which by toll of all these comments, that is exactly what ARMY is doing.
Thanks for all your comments and watching the video all the way through. Sorry if the discussion caused any stress! Sometimes we just never know where it'll end up going. I definitely did not see it going this way so it was a learning curve for sure.

@@k-popcrashcourse it is totally fine, I mean I’m American too so I completely understood that it takes a lot for us to really learn how the rest of the world works and understand why they do what they do, bc America really doesn’t emphasize expanding your worldview in our education system. I did stay until the end and really valued the entire discussion bc it told me so much abt America but also each of you guys individually. I’m not gonna psychoanalyze you guys in the comments but I’ve got a degree in psychology and pre-med so this discussion really catered to that part of my brain 😂😂.

This song hasn't left charts since it release because it struck a chord with alot of people, this song comforted alot of people that were missing friends and loved ones.celebrities who tried to speak out about the sewol ferry tragedy was shut down, it was revealed by the victims families that in 2014 bts personally visited the families, donated 100 million won, burned incense and provided comfort for them, bts risked being blacklisted at that time. Bts has always spoke about important and serious matters and they do that using something they love and is passionate about, music, other than that they donate to various causes and do things like visting the victims families privately because it not about clout and money for them. Its sad that this man came into this with his mind already made up about bts and maybe things also should have been explained better, like what was happening with the government and citizens at that time and the sewol tragedy should have been explained fully. Songs like N.O., bapsae,am i wrong, paradise, even no more dream criticizes the government and pressures of society.

Sorry if you're getting this comment twice - I accidentally posted it from my personal RUclips account instead of the channel account. And apparently I copy/pasted incorrectly. But I'm going to try to remember what I said ...
Basically the comment about the trains was a joke and he knows that there are trains and other technologies in Korea. He has traveled the world and both E + Chey know that. That's why they gave him the "you're an idiot" look. But it's ok if you stopped watching there because you'd probably get real upset at the discussion afterward.
But if you do end up watching the video, please give Luis some time to figure things out. He does a great job at digging himself into a hole as the discussion progresses, mostly because he's talking from a very western outlook on the music industry. And so his comments aren't about BTS but mostly artists in general. But I think with some external processing and some discussion points, he eventually comes around and admits that he was wrong about things. By the time the fourth video posts (on Monday) his viewpoint on things will be different, it just seems like he doesn't get there but in reality it's only like 30 minutes later after a few other MV's.
So please excuse his dumb remarks or you can choose to not watch the videos. That's fine. There are some other reaction videos with just E + Chey that might be good to watch.
Hope that clears things up. And sorry for the double commenting!

The fact the time when the sewol tragedy happened. Gov of SK banned anyone who freely talks about it. And arts is always a way to talk about an issue. Like how here in PH when Spanish colonised us Filipino, one of our hero Dr. Jose Rizal used literature to called out the Spanish gov and woken the Filipino people that we are being slave in our own land.
He keep pushing the big corporation things when Spring day was released when BH was a small Company. My criticsm to him is stop generalising every artists just bec the people you met are all like that. His world view doesn't speak for everyone.
The guy also having his American mentality. In US you want in your face thing when here in Asian. It not really a thing if censorship is big here esp is SK.
PS. That dude is not giving a criticism at all bec again criticism means giving a well thought opinion to improve something that a person is well informed about what they criticisizing in this case he is being prejudice and basing his so called critism in his limited and ignorant point of view.

Much like your vid, this ended up way longer than expected, oops!
I appreciate Luis' honesty though, as it's coming from an outside perspective, I feel like he could maybe hold off on the judging until he's gotten some of the details. Props to E, Chey and Jo for providing some of the background. I'm just gonna add a few more thoughts.
"Injustice" was the correct word. The school kids were told to stay in place on the illegally overly stacked sinking ferry by the capt. and crew for hours and there were plenty of chances to rescue them yet the authorities didn't and they stopped civilians from doing so. The gov't and media lied about what happened. The President was impeached afterward and it was found that she had a blacklist of artists and such.
Luis is correct that it's not just 7 guys, they are backed by a whole company. RM and SUGA wrote the song about missing friends. The MV was made about the ferry tragedy as blatantly as was possible back then. But the 7 guys have been allowed and encouraged to write music about subjects they're passionate about since the very beginning, though some songs are written about something specific but worded in a way so that as many ppl as possible can relate to it(ie. missing loved ones or even as a breakup song). Forgetting that they're backed by a company is disrespectful to all the behind the scenes ppl, like the ones who made the MV, which is another art form. However, Luis seems to automatically equate money-making with disingenuous manipulation for the purpose of making more money. That may be the case sometimes but sometimes is not always. Many musicians are artists and artists don't only make entirely commercial art, a lot of the time, artists speak their experiences through their artform. Artists should also get paid what they're worth like everyone else. Yes, it's also a business but it's a little cynical to automatically assume that no one is being genuine if money is involved. Sure, some ppl pick a cause to make them look good and to profit off of it. BTS and their money-making company don't tend to be among those. As E mentioned they're very philanthropic. What she didn't mention is that they usually don't publicise their donations. The media dig it up and report on it. It was discovered(i think a couple of yrs after) that BTS and their company had donated to a fund for the families of the students who died.
Ok ok, last thought... Or three. I found it amusing that Luis used Fire as an example of a fun banger just to dance to. It is... But the lyrics, like most of their songs have substance, telling the youth to live their life the way they want to because it's theirs and not anyone else's. But like i said before, their songs are relatable to many, even ones who just want to dance to a banger. Things shrouded in symbolism is also part cultural. Asian cultures tend to be more poetic and often heavy on metaphor while North America tends to be more.... plain speaking. And lastly, the statement that some things don't have to be artistic or turned into art... Just because something doesn't have to be doesn't mean it can't be or shouldn't be. Imagine keeping art and social commentary separate! What is art if not a reflection of life? And how many of us would have known about the incident if they'd only made a statement instead of this song and MV?
BTW, what are you guys gonna do with the 100$ he owes you? 😆

    Interesting reaction.
Firstly I feel that the guy went into the video holding a strong bias against bts. I didn't feel like he gave the video or the music a fair chance. There was a long debate about the video/visual story which he clearly didn't like. But he never even gave a chance to the music or the lyrics hence as a musician himself weren't those the areas the would notice first.
Secondly being a musician himself what does he put out in his music or "art". I would love to check it out. Throughout history any era that was impacted by tragedy the people/artists of the era expressed their emotions through different mediums ( films, books, poetry, protests, music, paintings etc...
Him saying that if they are so impacted by the injustice why not just say it rather making a song about it. When on the other hand he "critique" other artists for straight-up coming out in support of BLM as an act.
My suggestion to give him another chance once he goes through all of these in depth comments. He should come back and have discussion about the answers Army gave to his questions/ "critique "

Idk if if anyone else spoke abt this, but BTS made this video especially difficult to understand bc of the political environment at the time in SK.
At the time the government was honestly really corrupt and eventually the whole country protested and got their president impeached. But when this MV came out the government was LITERALLY black listing celebrities that spoke out abt this incident and LITERALLY had the news censor what actually happened and tried to let as little information out abt the issue as possible. It wasn’t until the issue got national press that families started to get some answers.
BTS made the MV difficult to understand for their own protect but true to their nature, they still had the courage to speak out on behalf of those students.

Hi! So I know that now since I've watched the Italian Army explanation video and did some research since then. But at the time of this recording they all knew as much as I did at the time - only what was told to us in that 8 minute video. So we didn't know about the political climate and blacklisting etc. Nor did we know the sheer horror of hundreds of students drowning in a ferry ship while divers were blocked from rescuing them.
So we had no idea the depth that this MV had or the risk they took for releasing it. So we may come across as ignorant or close minded or plain rude - but that's bc we didn't have all the facts. A lot of that is my fault for not doing proper research beforehand to inform them during the watch. The discussion probably would have gone in a completely different direction if they knew. I'll try to do better next time.

@@k-popcrashcourse it is 100% okay, we (as an audience) can’t expect you guys to know EVERYTHING abt a tradgety that happened in another country (and the resulting political climate at the time). It’s fine to learn as you go, you’re only human after all 😂
I look forward to you guys learning more abt that time tho. In fact, another song they made directly calling out the politicians at the time (from the same album) is called “Am I Wrong.” I don’t think there’s a REALLY good explanation video abt it on YT but that is a song where they flat out quote and mock some of the sitting politicians at the time bc of what they were saying abt the Korean public. Bc that song was so blatant and they had the gall to perform it live…multiple times (the choreography also mocked the politicians) they truly almost got blacklisted for that song.

Likening them to Back Street Boys or any regular money-making Boyband is just sacrilege. Yes, some "artists" in the music industry would take advantage of unfortunate events or profit off cultures by incorporating them into their "art" to make it a selling point but this isn't the case here.
He's totally biased because BTS is famous and their company is making lots of money. However, he doesn't understand that BTS members were risking their career for the sake of meaningful "art" and how their sincerity in their craft is what got them their current success.
    BTS stands for
    방 탄 소 년 단
*B* ang *T* an *S* onyeondan which means *Bulletproof Boyscouts* in *Korean*
They used to be mocked for this name, even in South Korea. This name signifies the group's desire "to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets"
If you explored BTS' discography further, you'll notice that BTS make songs with strong social messages that touch on subjects such as mental health, social injustices, prejudice, self reflection, development and self love.
Throughout their career, they *consistently* made the subjects mentioned relevant and amplified through *their own music.*
They've always used their influence for the better. I.e. making fans donate to charities in their name during their birthdays, raising awareness about social issues that are seen as taboo etc.
Their "art" taught me many things, their music and lyrics saved me and many others who thought they wouldn't wanna live anymore.
Also, no one can beat BTS' work ethic. BTS train like athletes. They practice their choreographies 12-16 hrs *daily* (they have lots of intense choreographies to remember) and singing on treadmills. Afterwards, they move on to produce music until dawn despite their hectic schedule.
*"Instead of worrying about loosing their fame, fans and money like other celebrities, BTS were worrying about loosing their passion and love for music"* - _reference from their song, Black Swan_
It's a big mistake to compare BTS to One Direction or any Western boyband because their standards are way too high. No one grinds harder or does it like BTS.

Hi! Thanks for the recommendation! I'll let Luis know since he was guest on our channel. I watched the Italian Army explanation video a few days ago and it definitely helped me understand the weight of the whole situation along with the risk they took in making the song/MV. I kind of wish I had that info when we first did the reaction - our discussion might've looked different if we knew all that beforehand. But at least now we can educate ourselves some more about it.

He’s saying all this stuff without knowing what they did, who they are, what the situation is. He called it lame because of what he’s used to in the western world. This song wasn’t just to get popular or for show and i think that’s what he’s saying which makes it wrong. Who hurt this man lol
But what if you showed them: bapsae, magic shop, blue and grey, outro: tear, or something fun like 2021 festa?

I teared up for his honesty, I've heard others criticize the MV before but it really makes sense. I'm a bit frustrated he doesn't know a thing about it. But with an upset heart, I found myself learning things too. But as an ARMY that journeyed with BTS for 6 years now, I'm still protective of them. I hope you also understand our passion to defend them.
Hoping we all met half-way and understand each other and be really nice to each other. It's enough for us for others outside the fandom to understand what is the platform of BTS and ARMYs, what is their message through their music and the contents they produce and share to the world, are trying to convey to the world. This growing pains hurts so much but let's continue to support each other :)

Sometimes I think about taking the video down because of how intense the it is and how Luis comes across in it. He didn’t have all the info and that’s how a lot of people are, uninformed. And so the discussion is important to have and the reaction is just that - a reaction.
I understand why a lot of people get upset watching this video, we’re all protective of BTS. But we also have to do our part to educate people along the way. I’m still learning myself. That’s what this channel is all about - I love sharing this world with others. I just hope I’m better prepared next time for stuff like this. Thank you for sharing the explanation video and the discussion afterwards. Myself, as a Black American and BTS ARMY since 2018 (BTS debut was 2013 ), I feel that BTS and HYBE (aka Big Hit) have challenged the norm and opened the world’s eyes with their thought provoking lyrics, their amazing MV storytelling and charitable donations to comfort and inspire a generation whose voices are often not heard. Yes it is a business but that doesn’t mean that what they put out to the world doesn’t have meaning behind it , as well as profit. I highly suggest watching the Italian Army Spring Day explanation video which goes into more detail and reason why this song and video really is a sense of comfort to South Korea regarding that tragedy. Also please realize that American Culture is not the only culture out there. We all think and express ourselves differently in the world however just because you (the guy in the reaction) did not understand it doesn’t mean that the symbolism was lost on other cultures who did. Making assumptions without understanding the full story is really unfortunate because you miss out on so much compassion, internal growth, changes in the government and the courage that took place after this tragedy. And one more thing, the Asian actor in the clip from Snowpiercer in the explanation video is Song Kang-Ho and was not in Squid Game. Lee Jung-Jae is the lead actor in Squid Game. Just like all black people do not look alike, all Asians do not look alike either.

He obviously does not know how to appreciate art in its purest forms. Perhaps due to his distinct journeys in life, his pessimism and negativity has taken over his mindset when relating to things and people. His wisdom could be deemed deep through his own life experiences, but then again, wisdom is ever expansive and infinite, and so his interpretations can be accepted only at the superficial level. The complexities of good music cannot be described or understood in one sitting of listening. BTS are not just singers and performers. They are artists who present music to the world that no one else could/can. At their whims, through their own reflections and intuitions, they write lyrics and music in collaboration with other artists/producers to uplift and expand perceptions for the meaning of life and love for oneself and for others. BTS is not just a social phenomenon, but has become, with ARMY, a social movement, for social change.

spring day never left korean chart since the day it was release until now cuz Korean understands the beauty and the meaning of this song!! as for the explanation, ever since their debut they used a lot of symbolism that's why armys grew sus in every little thing we see in the mvs or concepts photos or everything related to them! and bts are aware of it and used it to be connected with us more and like what I said! they make songs that everyone can enjoy but only armys can understand!
this case/ tragedy were downplay by SK gov. where ppl can get blocked listed if they talked and support it that's why ppl don't publicly talk abt it back in the days! mind you few years ago some of the band members and their CEO went to the victims "sneakly" to help them, one of the family of the victims reveled it when the situation got better. gladly sk president were dethroned and now we're here! aside from they're musicians so it's understandable that they'll use their platform to speak about it!

His opinion is so westernized that it's killing me. If he was truly open minded then he would have had the knowledge to say "i don't have enough information so I'm not going to make assumptions" but he did the exact opposite. And the North Korea comment really rubbed me the wrong way. It would be similar to me being an artist and doing a song about COVID and someone told me "hey why don't you just focus on police brutality because you're black." There are probably endless political and social issues in SK, like any other country, and to boil it down to the North Korean conflict is so ignorant I'm sorry. No hate to your friend, but I also really hope the comment about whether or not SK has trains was a joke, i honestly just couldn't tell once that was topped off with the later comments.
If he actually wants to learn more about the band and why you like them he has to be open to viewing things objectively and taking your words as credible instead of the star blinded fans he seems to think we all are. We know they have a huge team behind them, executing their ideas flawlessly, and that team is also a huge reason for their success.
I'm not sure what your reaction plans are for the group, but for his own benefit i think you should show him some type of behind the scenes of their process. Maybe one of RM's vlives where he goes in depth about the making of the albums or maybe just one of their more personal songs so he starts to see them as real people with input in their craft.

The choose the symbolism because they could have been blacklisted like many other artist who tried to speak out about the events that happened. He was talking about how they choose this tragedy over “what is going on between south and north Korea” and i have to say I have taken many history classes and am currently studying east asian culture and from my point of view the only reason north and south Korea haven’t been unified yet is because so much time has passed. Kinda like having a fight with your best friend in middle school and not talking for years until high school graduation and you suddenly think maybe i should talk them but too much time has passed so you hesitate. Anyway this even was important enough the citizens impeached their president. There are other reason why this is super important but that is what came out of these events.

@@k-popcrashcourse I also suggest Paldogangsan along with the DKDKTV explanation video, since the conflict with North Korea was specifically mentioned in this video.
I appreciate the honesty of the reaction and the debate. I think it's worth noting a couple of things. 1) BTS did privately donate to and visit/burn incense with the families of the Sewol Ferry Disaster victims back in 2014 (it was only revealed years later when the name BTS unexpectedly came up during a reporter's interviews with families of the victims). 2) Yes, they work with a lot of people to refine the messages they put out in the world, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Personally, if I was going to address an extremely sensitive issue I would actively seek out as much feedback as possible. In the behind the scenes vlog of their process for developing their pandemic album "BE," after RM brought up "Life Goes On" as a possible theme for the album's lead single, Jimin warned that they would need to be really careful, because a sentiment like that could be hurtful even with the best intentions if not executed well. When BTS decides to put out a song to comfort people, they want to make sure it actually achieves its purpose and doesn't just rub salt in the wounds. 3) I think it's worth noting how the song was received by people with more context. Spring Day has not left the charts in South Korea since it's release and is the longest charting song of all-time on Korea's leading streaming service by a wide margin. It is still charting on Melon to this day, 5 years later.

I am watching this reaction a year later than its posted day, and I still have to say that... I'm sorry, but he missed the entire point and purpose of Spring Day. The song was and still is a gift from BTS to the people who were or felt affected by the Sewol tragedy. To this day, it still remains on the musical charts and stands relevant. It's meant to be a song about hope and new beginnings, while not forgetting about loved ones, regardless of what theme or subject someone might link to its lyrics. Its message is universal and at the same time subtly plays tribute to a horrible incident for Korea, which IS the group's home country. That is what music does and represents for people. It's an aid and tool to transmit what sometimes plain standard words cannot. Now... about the money-making cooperation machine... yes they are artists, of course they do and SHOULD profit from their art, no matter what that is, and so should their company, to be able to put out more music and more art, and in that process offer people and families jobs who have careers in that field. Businesses and corporations house the income source of thousands of people and families in any industry, lets not forget that. However, it is ignorant and almost vicious to claim that the song and video were crafted on purpose solely for profiting, without really knowing any true information of how it came to be, nor knowing about the origins and struggles of the group themselves AND their company. Without knowing their constant philanthropic and non-profit support throughout the years, both in Korean and globally, and without knowing or having been exposed to more of their music and lyrical messages. I do understand where his perspective may be coming from, due to lack of exposure, BUT that is exactly why such one off opinions are invalid for me, because they are obsolete, biased and crippling. As BTS' original formed company's motto said... "Music and Artists for Healing". Music is the art of healing. That is what Spring Day embodies, and I am sorry he could not comprehend that.

Thank you for being the latter.
As for Luis, he at this point was only exposed to three BTS songs and he had almost zero knowledge on the band or k-pop in general, let alone a tragedy that happened elsewhere in the world. What all three guests do have is a thorough knowledge of the WESTERN music industry - and even though they shouldn’t paint one in light of the other - they spoke from their unique experience.
I’ve done reactions for the past years with a number of guests and tbh you never know how people are going to respond to something. This, unfortunately, is how the discussion turned out last year. And I know that Chey and Luis probably don’t think much about it these days. And Elaine, when she was alive, really did enjoy the song.
I personally love the song. And am always trying to educate people on the background of the song beforehand so that people don’t get the impression.

I really appreciate people who don’t feel the need to just love things because it’s popular. So kudos to him for being very honest.
However, I think to claim that this video was a money making effort when it impacted the entire country and caused so much pain through everyone. She had a good point about when groups start out it’s a lot about making money, because it is. When BTS started they really played into the persona of bad boys, and I think as they grew they started to make music and talk about things they truly care about. So while it is about making money, they are just fortunate that the very way they express their values and bring awareness to important things is the same way they bring in money.
The other thing I thought about is to say that some people just want to listen to music to listen and have a good time. Some other people want to listen to music for the message and the hidden messages. So, no hate to this man he seems nice. But it feels a bit hypocritical to diss the video because some people want to just listen to listen, but not address that some people do enjoy hidden meanings and symbolism.
But in the end, it was interesting to hear the perspective of people who don’t know exactly what has happened and why things are the way they are. And in the end, it did turn out to be a misunderstanding. A lot of the people in the comment section don’t seem to have made it to the end, because then they would reach the point when the crucial piece of info is revealed and the misunderstanding is resolved

Thank you for watching through the end and giving time and space to hear everyone out. They all have different perspectives about it and very limited knowledge about BTS and k-pop in general, what they do know is the music industry really well since they’re all steeped within that world. So they’re speaking from what they know about the WESTERN music industry. Which is unfair for the judgments made against a band from a different country that’s in a slightly different industry about another country’s tragedy.
There’s just a lot of different factors that people didn’t take the time to understand let alone get to the end of the video to listen. But yeah, big misunderstanding. He didn’t have all the information. I didn’t do well to brief them on it at the time, which is a failure on my part as the PD. But it made for interesting dialogue. I think a lot of people, especially those in the US, have a preconceived idea of what BTS/K-Pop is and they just need help along the way to discover how amazing they are (and hilarious!). It's an ongoing thing but we're here to learn more and introduce them to whoever we can!

I lost brain cells half way through this. He had the audacity to speak on a tragedy he has no clue about and say all this bullshit 😂 I’m open to peoples opinion about a song and if they like or dislike it, but the audacity to speak about a tragedy that took the lives of many and some are still not over said tragedy is embarrassing. Hope I’m the 8 months or so since this has come out he has learned otherwise he’s gonna have a rough time in life with that mindset.

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to watch our video and sorry that it took away brain cells!! That was totally not my intention - this whole reaction was so not what I expected. And nothing could’ve prepared me for what he said or any of the backlash that came after. I don’t know Luis personally (he was a friend of E + Chey) and so I wish I could give you an update on this after I make him watch some more explanation videos and/or BTS introduction videos. But that’s not the case. 😔😔
Even though we introduce people to k-pop on this channel, it’s hard to keep prejudices and assumptions out of the way at times. A few video reactions isn’t enough to give people a broad scope of the industry, the depth of the lyrics, and the work ethic and character of some of favorite bands. Hopefully this will change or at least do some good for those we bring on.
Anyways, thanks for watching! And I hope you tried a few other vids with other guests. 💜💜☺️☺️

The man's perspective is very western. No understanding of the fact that artists in oppressive countries can't "just say it" or they will be persecuted. Often times the only outlet for the pain they feel is through symbolism in art. This tragedy reminds me a lot of one that happened in my own home country and, believe me, if any artist called out the government for it publically they would be jailed, tortured, or murdered. Everyone has the right to an opinion but his is lacking an understanding of the context of life in those counties.

I know this video is old, but if you all haven't yet, maybe do a "re-group" using the Italian ARMY explanation?
I think they all would get it a LOT more.
Him pointing out "Why not just say it?" As you mentioned, they COULDN'T "just say it"...that 10,000 person blacklist of celebs who actively spoke out about it was enough to scare others from doing so. They *had* to be "sneaky" and use symbolism to represent everything so they didn't land on that massive list. How can you talk when your mouth is - essentially - covered in duct tape? To me, honestly, the making of the MV is even MORE impressive. How much research went into the planning of the video to include ALL of the references they did use? Snowpiercer, Omela's, Little Match Girl, and more...
News reports falsely claiming that all of the students were rescued.
Korean society as a whole where children are taught pretty much at birth to not just "respect" their elders, but "do as your elders say" - which also includes those of higher "rank" than you as well, thus, the captain and crew - which is the main reason many students (and adults alike) didn't leave their cabins. VERY few of the passengers were brave enough to defy that order. No, it wasn't a "request" for them to stay where they were. No, it wasn't a "suggestion" for everyone to stay in their cabins. It was an ORDER.
    All the corruption and deceit.
The illegal modifications to the ship.
    The excessive weight.
Going even deeper than any video I have yet to see...
    The NUMBERS -
    476 on board.
306 died. That was almost 65%!
5 bodies have still not been recovered to this day.
Several volunteers and professional rescue operators committed su*c*de after the event because they had so many nightmares of hearing the screams of those they couldn't - WEREN'T ALLOWED - to rescue.
The vice-principal of the school also committed su*c*de - survivor's guilt is difficult to deal with, even with the best therapist. South Korea - as a whole/in general - is still kind of in the dark ages about mental health.
The entire crew, save three - and several political figures - were arrested and charged with various crimes concerning the tragedy and beyond.
MANY of those verdicts were overturned.
Only in ONE case (the captain) did that ruling give somewhat proper justice. The captain's sentence went from 36 years in prison originally but was changed to life in prison for his actions. I think it's law in most countries, the captain stays with the ship, no matter what. He was one of the first rescued, thus leaving so many to die instead of helping them, as he was legally bound to do.
ALL of the rest of the crew got lesser sentences when their verdicts were overturned, except 3.
The 3 crew members who didn't get jail time? They avoided it...because they were the ONLY three crew members who were brave enough to do their job - that is, try to rescue passengers. Sadly, all three of those crew members went down with the ship.
The only reason most passengers survived? They put on life vests they managed to find and floated to the surface once they realized what was really happening.
Side Note: South Korea is a peninsula. Surrounded by water on 3 sides, yet still only around 30% of the population know how to swim. Thus, even in the BEST of weather conditions, the likelihood of more survivors still wouldn't have been much higher since the Coast Guard waited so long to even start rescue missions and volunteer rescuers were being turned away, with some of them even being arrested for trying to help.
This whole thing is just...it hurts. Almost 10 years after the tragedy, it's still just as painful, and I've never even been to South Korea, let alone lost anyone to the tragedy. I am JUST old enough that I DO remember news reports here in the U.S. about it, though.

If he knew about the tragedy, then he would understand…but the fact that he knows he doesn’t know the whole story and still feels like it’s he’s right, is what’s irritating! An opinion is one think, but his declarations that these are fact when he doesn’t know that to be true makes it no longer an ‘opinion ‘! It’s not for BTS to explain the tragedy - it’s for them to get people interested and they can ldo their own research! People want to be spoon fed everything! There is not one single BTS song that doesn’t have a message or a purpose! It would have been better had he asked ‘what injustices were they referring to?!’ Rather than insisting the tragedy wasn’t injustice! Without going into the whole story - the reason over 200 people died is because the Korean government failed to respond the way they were supposed to and then tried to cover it up and when outside sources tried to help, the government blocked them because they didn’t want it to be discovered that they fckd up! They lied to the families and the public and the media assisted them in the cover up! There’s so much to this story…but it wasn’t hard to decipher is because we already knew about the tragedy!
And then he said - why is this the message, especially with everything going on with N.Korea…does he think every day is a fight and battle with with N.Korea?! That is over a century long struggle that’s not changing - we live every day in Korea just fine; there’s nothing that can be done with N.Korea and that’s what the government is for! He also needs to stop saying ‘we’..the purpose is to teach, so others will be inspired to do their own learn! RM uses Jung, Herman Hesse, and other authors works in their songs to inspire and instigate knowledge!
His words are very ignorant for someone who doesn’t know anything about them and be convinced he knows exactly what they are!
Their company wasn’t big enough for them to be a ‘machine’ when they came out - they were very under staffed and at the verge of bankruptcy, so the members were very responsible for alot of their own content - there weren’t enough people for them to be ‘run’ in that way and the fact he keeps saying ‘probably’ shows he doesn’t know! He needs to preface his comments with ‘I think’ cause he doesn’t know! They were in fact the only group the company had…

I think it's also worth mentioning that BTS strives to represent the voices of the youth. If you look at their story that's the foundation for which the group was formed. Bang Si-Hyuk wanted a group that the youth could look up to and grow with. The song and the video are a testament to that. The tragedy affected young people, students, and the song and the video convey what those survivors were feeling in the wake of the tragedy.

This is why I prefer the Italian ARMY Spring Day explanation because it gave more context regarding what went down the Sewol Ferry Tragedy. People who spoke up about this issue were blacklisted by the Korean government before. It wasn't simply an accident as the victims were practically sacrificed by the people in power in an attempt to bury their corrupt practices. This song has been a source of hope to a lot of people that it hasn't left the Korean chart since its release.
There is hypocrisy and then there is standing up against oppression. Knowing the difference between the two requires setting aside biases. An opinion based on little knowledge is not a criticism but a prejudice. If you aspire to be a reactor, then I encourage you to do your research because you can't always use ignorance as an excuse.

  • @bauistik3982
    @bauistik3982 2 года назад +2

So basically what I’m getting in his own perspective or opinion of Spring Day or BTS’ music in general should be all in your face kind of stuff and shouldn’t have any symbolic explanation or interpretation coz otherwise BTS are just sort of or literally using or exploiting the tragedy and all other social injustices and all the important issues in life that BTS’ has talked, expressed and conveyed in their music? That BTS shouldn’t have gotten inspiration or drive in writing their songs from tragedies, social injustices, economic crisis, everyday life situations and struggles because at the end of the day, BTS just want to make money and not really helping anyone through their depression and struggles and not really giving inspiration or mental and emotional support through their music and content like the ARMYs all over the world are saying based on their personal experiences with learning and knowing about BTS and their music? That Big Hit with the company mission statement “Music and Artists for Healing” doesn’t really mean anything. That BTS doesn’t really care about their ARMYs and those people who cannot speak for themselves? And that the people like us who believes that BTS is trying to help in making the world a better place to live in are just delusional or blinded by the charisma and influence of BTS from which struggles as a group that came from a near bankruptcy small agency and only had the chance to debut because they had to fill in on a spot that became vacant in a music show? That despite with the music nowadays are selling in digital forms? BTS’ album with no bundles are selling like “hotcakes” in millions and outselling every artist in the world and breaking historical records within the industry, within their country and as Asians? And breaking their own record over and over again? And despite being the most famous and most successful band or group or artists alive in the world, they release numbers of albums or songs for free as gifts to their fans even though ARMYs would still buy those albums if BTS would sell it? Yup, he’s a critic alright and a very negative and hypocrite one. But it’s just my opinion of him based on the words that came out of his mouth on this video. And by putting himself out here, he’s opening himself up to criticism… right? I think people like him will never like BTS coz he already had his opinion on them fixed, which is “BTS make music to make money, period!” Right? smh
Also, I’m not hating on him and what I said above were my own opinion. Yes, I don’t agree with everything he said but I understood where he’s at and yes he upsets me because I’m a BTS ARMY. He’s entitled to his own opinion so no hate for him on my side. I actually felt sad for him coz he misunderstood BTS in that manner.✌🏻
    P.S.
Have you watched the more elaborate explanation video about the Ferry accident? You should watch it with them so that the injustice, irresponsible behavior of the authorities and neglect that happened during that time would be best explained with all of you so that you would understand why RM write Spring Day and why Spring Day despite being released in 2017 is still in the Music Chart until now in South Korea… coz Koreans find it very beautiful and could relate to the message and emotions of the song more personally than us.

Hi! Thanks for watching. I probably should have done a better job at briefing them as to what this MV was about or fill them in on what the Sewol Tragedy was - so that's my fault. But at the time, I hadn't even seen the Italian Army explanation video so I didn't know the whole magnitude of the event or what an injustice it was. So it's hard to gage how people will respond to things when they 1) don't have all the facts and 2) each have their own background and experience in life and/or the music industry.
I'm sorry if this video made you upset or offended at all. I know he responded in a way that was very dismissive and ignorant but the Sewol Ferry Tragedy isn't common knowledge to most. And all those comments about hating artists who have to hide their messages, 1) he was talking specifically about US artists and 2) he didn't know at the time that people were banned from speaking about it. It wasn't until I filled him in at 35:35 that he understood why. It actually made him like them more.
I know that this reaction video made a lot of people upset but we urge all our guests to be truthful. If they like it, they'll say so. If they don't - they have said so. And it's not going to appeal to everyone. Just be mindful that he didn't have all the facts and that he was speaking as someone who is deeply embedded in the music industry (he sees a LOT more behind the scenes than we do - so if he's speaking about the hypocrisy of some artists, I'm pretty he's speaking from experience).
We have a response video here in case you want to check that out. His comments made a lot of people angry and so we had to say something in order for people understand and have patience with him and with us.
