Karl fyi I made the same mistake in 2009 but at night. I was behind a big hauler and managed to get through the toll without being spotted. Made it all the way from Pune to Mumbai via the expressway. I would have honestly preferred the old highway because people drive like asshats and it was scary on a slow bullet with all the cars whizzing past. Haven't made that mistake since.

This is the exact thing happened to me when I was traveling from Goa to Gujarat. One of the cop took me to the shipping container where where cops generally rest and keep the paperwork I assume. The cop educated me on how the insurance is not valid or is void if I meet with an accident on that express way. I had to pay 500 rs. fine but learned 2 lessons. 1- Never miss the marker to the express way. 2- You can't claim your insurance if you get hurt or worse on that express way. Cheers! India is still a far better place for any national to live and thrive without prejudice compared to any western country, although the collective living conditions are not satisfactory. The cop actually did notice because he specifically asked how much Hindi did he speak. I think staying in English is smart, because you might not know some technical legal wording or understand some local phrases. I suspect it also puts the cops at a disadvantage, and you should do that whenever you can, too.

Karl fyi I made the same mistake in 2009 but at night. I was behind a big hauler and managed to get through the toll without being spotted. Made it all the way from Pune to Mumbai via the expressway. I would have honestly preferred the old highway because people drive like asshats and it was scary on a slow bullet with all the cars whizzing past. Haven't made that mistake since.

This is the exact thing happened to me when I was traveling from Goa to Gujarat. One of the cop took me to the shipping container where where cops generally rest and keep the paperwork I assume. The cop educated me on how the insurance is not valid or is void if I meet with an accident on that express way. I had to pay 500 rs. fine but learned 2 lessons. 1- Never miss the marker to the express way. 2- You can't claim your insurance if you get hurt or worse on that express way. Cheers!
