Negative symptoms put my life to a halt. I went from working out daily and running, to sleeping 10+ hours a day and barely leaving my room. Then the voices and delusions came...

My son was on Olanzapine (Zyprexa) as his first med. It settled down his positive symptoms and anxiety and gave him room to rest and recover. He gained about 40 lbs, which was the least of our worries. After a year it just stopped working for him. We tried two other meds and then found Seroquel (Quetiapine). That's worked well for 2 years. It's more dangerous though; that tremor he's talking about is a very dangerous symptom and can become permanent. Some users experience liver damage. So don't rag on your prescribers too hard if they hold off on Seroquel. They don't want to make things worse.

Jacob, thank you for sharing your experiences with us. My son is 24. He was diagnosed when he was 18, just before graduating HS. He takes the Invega injection and he recognizes when he needs it. Like you, he has educated himself about his condition and understands that his brain works differently than neurotypicals. Sounds like you probably have a good support system of family and friends too. Best wishes and many thanks!

I've found your videos fairly recently, but glad to know I am not the only one who has had a terrible time on Abilify. My side effects on it were similar to yours, complete lack of any energy/appetite and it made me constantly angry. It really scared me off drugs for a long time, but due to symptoms worsening with stress or symptoms causing more stress (it's hard to tell sometimes), I'll be going back to a psychologist for the first time in years.
Keep up the good effort, and congratulations on quitting the smoking habit. My longest time without was about 3 months... stay strong.

    • @Zminchu
      @Zminchu 8 лет назад +8

At the five minute mark of his first ever video he says he's 20. But, in one of his videos from 2014, a year later, he says he's about to be 18, so I have no idea what's going on with his age.

If you find your negative symptoms are getting the better of you, consider asking your doctor about modafinil or perhaps even ritalin. It may seem counterintuitive to give someone prone to psychosis stimulants (if you can even call modafinil a stimulant), but there is evidence they can help. Childhood ADHD is a risk factor for later developing schizophrenia I believe, so it's reasonable to assume they share some of the same underlying disease processes, at least in certain types of schizophrenia.Oh and definitely look into sarcosine, it's a readily-available supplement which when used alongside an antipsychotic appears to be quite a helpful adjunct, improving negative and cognitive symptoms as well as positive.

And as soon as I thought that, you said it yourself you felt like a zombie. It was horrible. I was also on ablify or how ever you spell it. That stuff made me worse, I was even worse with depression. None of the medications I have been on helped. Eventually I stopped and didn't take medication anymore. I stopped around, 15 maybe? I was on medication at 10. I'm glad you found something that helps. Now I'm 19 and I've found stuff to help. Like music.

There's all of these videos and articles and shit about people with schizophrenia still having great careers and the whole "you can too!" but it just feels like a kick in the teeth because those articles never address negative and cognitive symptoms, the money required for treatment, that some people are treatment resistant, etc. It's like they paint these pictures of hope but the target audience isn't actually the people dealing with the condition it's for family and friends to keep this almost false hope 😞

I recognize myself in most of your problems except the hallucinations and I haven't been on medication, I just want to say thank you for making videos, I was a fucked up kid but your way of looking at the world made me start the journey towards a better mindset. It'd be interesting if you'd talk about science and physics and different theories, for example your thoughts on multiverses and the possibility of alien life, politics are interesting to talk about but if you're like me it's just a fun subject but maybe not something you wanna make statements about, just ideas for videos if you'd ever need them. Its really nice to see you again...
I have sczoaffective dis dyslexia adhd and capd...
Ive been on several of the same meds in years past and have experenced most of the same side-effects. It took 11 years to find a med cocktail that works well for me.
I continue with every anti-psychotic to have shaky hands
But the most serious side-effect with the last few and my current one is dystonia - a muscle invalintary extreme flexation that - for me comes and goes at a rate of every 2 - 3. min and has - when it comes on. - lasted for upwards of 30 hrs. for me it affects the muscles in the upper half of my body including my Dyaphram...benadryl is one of the things I take to lessen the severity...thankfully I have not had an epasode since last month as well as keeping my anti-psychotic dose vary low.
    Happy B-Day!
And congrads on your new realtiobship!
My boyfriend is vary understanding and patient as well...and that makes all the difference in the world.

Glad to see you finding a med that works for you. Different meds work for different people so yes, people tend to go through quite many. I'm not sure if it is exactly the same thing you had one one of the bad meds but sounds a little like what I had on Geodon. I had very bad sedation, I could go lie on the floor. But I could not be comfortable because my body wanted to move move move (akathisia), but it couldn't because I was way too tired. It felt like being locked in with hell basically. I was prescribed this med for anxiety and it flipped me into panic eventually because I felt like I couldn't control my body, like it was giving up on me, like it would almost die. Not a nice way of treating anxiety. But... treatment is hit and miss and it always makes me happy when someone finds a med that suits them, even if some sides are still annoying. Also yes, I feel there is a balance between where the med helps just barely. Personally I prefer med dosages that do just enough to make it possible for me to cope, I have seen so many people drugged far beyond that and it scares me a little. Sure, they do not have much symptoms but they don't have much life fun either.

@@yungsong1646 hello, with Seroquel I was like a zombie. Seems like negative symptoms of schizophrenia are way more helped with : Amisulpride in low dosage (50mg or under), Clozapine, sometimes Olanzapine. Did you have this negative symptoms like a secondary effect of your medication, or like a consequence of your schizophrenia ? Because in my case (bipolar), I get negative symptoms (anhedonia, slow and weird thinking, ect) because of the medication. So I was wondering if it's like that in schizophrenia too.

Abilify fucked me up, I got really bad mouth dryness and because of that I wanted to kill myself, when it's painful to drink water it's a bit too much, I couldn't eat either. Olanzapin is for my mania and I remember once they had to increase the dosage when I was becoming manic anyway it made me really tired, I remember sitting at work and almost falling asleep, that was after I stopped taking abilify. Then I have lithium that makes my hands shake, that's annoying, otherwise I don't have any issues with my medication.

How is your mom doing? Is she now ok? take care of yourself. seroquel as far as i understand makes you gain weight but dont seem to have gained any weight. hugs from Amsterdam Holland

I cant remember the name of the medication i was on but it cause a severe nervousness system breakdown (I think that's what they called it} and i was paralyzed it started in my feet and i walked out to the nurses station and they said i was fine. then i was having trouble walking and my neck muscles started to clench. It was so terrifying they had to bring me to the quiet room and give me a bunch of shots. I remember laying they unable to do anything.

Hi. Do you know good video games for people with schizophrenia? On ps4. I saw something called a flame in the flood which looks pretty cool. Ive found indi games is what i think is cool. Maybe where you have to work together or figure things out, preferably together with other players online. Maybe also meet people. Preferably not with too much violence or too much addictive sides

I have bipolar disorder and I love my medication because I don't feel any emotions and I'm actually being a really productive person but I hate it because if I don't take it perfectly every morning I get crazy withdrawal kinda like a heroin or drug user would :/
