HI Pam! I have been an elementary teacher for 12 years and after watching your video, I connected with Leave A Place Better Than You Found It. I had taught 5th graders for 7 years and throughout those years I worked with many student leaders who had shown their leadership abilities within our Student Council organization, but there were always a handful of kiddos that didn't necessarily join the Student Council who still possessed leadership qualities. Through my conversations with those kiddos I always asked them the following 2 questions: How do you want others to remember you? and How will you leave your mark/legacy at our school? The responses I got blew me away. The perceptions, visions, and missions that those 5th graders shared with me and worked through inspired me to continue to stay in the education field. Thank you for your uplifting video! It helped me to reconnect with keeping my mind focused on encouraging kids to strive for their best!

Hi Brittany - I'm glad you found some inspiration in the talk. You can never underestimate how 'creating the conditions' for leadership can provide that nudge/opportunity for someone to take on leadership. Keep up the good work in helping your students to 'be their best'.

I just accepted a job for a leadership position. This made me feel a lot better as I start searching for guidance

I am restructuring the student council at an elementary school. You gave me a lot of good jumping off points to take back to my co-sponsor. I'm thinking of taking one of your ideas to make it our theme for the year, Being Bigger than Oneself. We are a service project organization and I think this will help set the tone for our focus. It isn't about getting the vote to participate it is about getting out there and helping others.

Hi Lisa - Thank you for your comment. Purposeful work through service creates many positive results, for others and self. There is also brain research that supports how doing 'good' for others helps with wellness for the 'doer'. In one of my schools, each class selected a service organization they wanted to support. The student voice and choice was important. The excitement of the students, realizing that they were able to 'make a difference' was palpable. As an example, the service to the local humane society stands out as one of the most successful projects undertaken by one of the grade six classes. Hopefully you will find some engaging and accessible entry points for your students to take on leadership through service where they too can find the joy in service of others.
