That scene of the three of them running through the snowy woods and sliding down the hill together brings tears to my eyes every time I watch this film.
I actually came across this movie when RUclips randomly coughed up an upload of the entire thing, and it's joined the works of Studio Ghibli as some of my favourite "quiet" comfort movies. I love how it addressed what it might be like to actually raise children who can change forms by a mother who is not herself able to do so, and the potential difficulties said mother could face.
Yeah, one of the reasons that I love it so much it its ability to be able to put a focus on motherhood and the concept of raising someone. Even despite Hana's uncertainty she does her best and is a wonderful mother who loves her children more than anything.
Even though I do love Belle and its visuals (+ music!) to me Wolf Children might be his absolute magnum opus. Such a heartwernching tale that made me cry and to this day I credit as *the* movie that taught how to tell a story. So nice seeing people taking attention to it. Absolutely deserved, and also amazing video ❤
I love Wolf Children but I still think summer wars is better (even if rehashed digimon movie plot). The scene where they read the note from grandma gets me every time. Tho my grandma was like that for my family is probably why. Also got me to play hanafuda/koikoi
this was one of the first anime movies i watched as a kid, i remember it so well!! a fun sleepover with my best friend, riffling through her dads anime box sets and dvds and her yelling in excitement as she pulled out wolf children. we watched it on the floor of her living room absolutely enthralled, i remember we both cried as quietly as possible when we snuck into the kitchen for midnight snacks.. that was a decade ago and i will miss those times even 5 decades from now :,)
Slight tangent, the pom poko characters are raccoon dogs, not raccoons, they are very different animals. About wolf children. Yeah, I watched it and I loved it. Iroh, from avatar, the last airbender once said that water is the elements of change, so needless to say, for the two characters named after different forms of precipitation (Yuki means Snow ❄️ and Ame means Rain 🌧), change was going to be a powerful force in their arcs.
They are indeed raccoon dogs in Pom Poko, thanks for the insight! It definitely strikes me as poetic that Ame and Yuki had their respective names and it was interesting to see how these names reflected the symbolism of each character as they grew up and assumed their own identities.
I do love how while its not really whats the focus forward, Hana does make her path forward too, and how she is not alone, she is part of the close nit village, haha i love the grumpy old man that cares but is very grumpy showing an them later, the villagers reveal the old man told them to support her :P Its a beautiful movie and great but that even her place is explored is so good.
There are so many beautiful moments in this movie. One of my favorites is when she's cleaning up the house and discovering its hidden treasures. The lovely sink...the patterns on the doors...I just felt so happy for her.
I agree, my favorite moments of the movie are often the subtle and quiet moments of comfort between Hana and her children, especially the one mentioned where she can hear Ame calling in the distance. She is so present in their lives and does her best to help them find their way in life, and this movie does such a beautiful job of showing that.
Another comment from me : I'm glad that in other asian countries like malaysia, Indonesia and philippines (my country) embraces our own cultures, languages, ethnicity, and indigenous entity. Despite living in morden lifestyle, we still celebrate and speak our own indigenous languages and not just filipino, the thing is we chose both embrace our past cultures while still living in modern times. And celebrate it with liberation and appreciation. Manila (the capital city of the Philippines) is the perfect example comparison to Tokyo, where they all are full in modern times, but the people in there actually don't have any ethnic background other besides being once associated with spanish colonizers back then. Despite being so modern they still suffer from poverty, pollution of litter, dirty rivers and sometimes unclean air, teenager pregnancy, etc. Manila is a both miserable place and a opportunity place for businesses and advancement for future status qou. Manila have it all, shopping, cars, malls, accessories, even Kpop concerts. But there's two things they don't have and that is *culture identity and nature.* Unlike Manila where it's full of buildings. We have mountains, rivers, beaches, coconut trees, banana trees, unique animals, and unique areas. And this video really made me think about that, thanks dude. Glad we don't have division in society and indigenous community, be diverse instead. Sadly japan is definitely not like that, yes they embraced their own culture but so many other different and unique cultures just been forgotten overtime and barely remember to appreciate due how aggressive they are in conformity. In a way this makes this movie poetically beautiful and sadder at the same time.. Imagine if you live in the phillipines, you're mother is filipino, and your father is japanese, we're actually find you pretty cool actually, and intrigue because you're seemed interesting case of mixed race. Yeah sure you'll get possibly bully in school but most of the time we're just pretty chill. We universally understand we shouldn't discriminate (atleast when it comes to race) as for other religion, gender, and sexuality. Yeah we're admittedly controversial on that part. Atleast we off a good start of being a much kinder society.
Man, I remember watching this film a few years ago. I believe it was during my first year of anime watching. It was from December of 2019 and then all of 2020. Wolf Children just gave me such happy, sad, and bittersweet feelings, all at the same time. Even melancholic. It's such a good portrayal of letting your children go and do what they want, as well as everything else you discussed in this video! Thanks for the analysis video!
I have loved this movie since its release! It not only made me love wolves but also made me feel closer to the character, Ame. Feeling very shy and timid as a child and having social anxiety made me feel isolated, but when he grows and finds his place and acceptance as a wolf, it makes me feel inspired. 🐺 ❤
Thanks for this review! Wolf Children is a small gem, best appreciated from a grownup's perspective, and any chance to expand its notoriety and reach is well appreciated. And if you're interested in the theme of identity, especially from the perspective of an "alien", I can wholeheartedly suggest reading "Go" by Kazuki Kaneshiro, either in a novel or manga form. It deals with the subject from the perspective of a young Korean-Japanese, and it is a small gem too.
interesting video i totally missed this aspect of the movie while watching it. I however was very annoyed by the way they handled the children in the movie, and for me it explains why the world is in this state between boys and girls. In the movie the girl is freespirited when she is young, but as she grows up and as her mother educated her she gets more tamed and fits in, even "settle" thanks to love...While on the contrary the boy is shy and tamed at first and as he grows up and the mother lets go of more and more in his education, he gets to go back to the wild and do everything he wants despite the society he lives in. I KNOW it more like "wild life" vs "human life" but i can't help but see the inherant problem of our society where we expects girls to get in the damn square we made for them, while boy can still be boys and do what they want even if they alienated the ones they love or hurt them and it's good bc you know that's how it is... The ending instead left me a very bad taste bc of that.
same thoughts. i understand the incident during their childhood may have been the catalyst but i felt dissatisfied how the result is them switching personalities and outcomes? i think if they showed the daughter still embracing her wolf side I'd accept it but yeah...

Children grow up. Sometimes, dreams change. What you value changes. She's always been more outgoing. More better able to fit in. In the end, she chose her life. Just as he chose his.
This is such a well made video, the quality is incredible for only 500+ views (at the time of writing this) You captured the beauty of the film absolutely with your editing skills and script, and in the intro, you building up the tension flawlessly with the music and getting straight to the point without pandering, I immediately was hooked i really hope you're proud of yourself, because you should be! This is a great GREAT great video!!! Thank you for sharing this with us!!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video :) I really wanted to take a lot of time to talk about this masterwork as it meant so much to me when I discovered it and how it continues to reflect so many complicated aspects of motherhood, identity, and growing up. The film means so much to me and I'm really happy that the passion shows here!
Dude, I love Wolf Children! I watched it a couple of times after the first time. But damn I didn’t expect the comparisons with the Korean-Japanese & the struggle of identity they go through.😅 BTW, what are your thoughts on the Ranma 1/2 remake. I think it’s alright with crazy animation, stunning visuals, & great performances from both original & English dub.
I did not get that at all. I thought her telling the truth about herself to Sōhei, was her showing him a side of herself that she didn't like. A kinda romantic gesture but one she was still ashamed of. She (metaphorically) cut out a peice of herself that used to make herself happy for those that weren't even worth it. And Ame did the same. He abandoned humanity, his family, & a part of himself. Plus if he's an adult wolf that just means he's gonna die before Hana dose. No parent deserves to suffer like that. The ending was sad to me because it seemed like nobody cared enough about Hana. She did everything for them & nobody did anything for her. That's what hurt. And it still dose. They didn't deserve someone like her in their lives. She deserved SO Much better.
This movie broke me. I sobbed at the end, especially with the subtitles lyrics during the credits. Like for days it stuck with me. I'm a mom now and refuse to watch it again cause I can't with Ame. The manga version has a few panels at the end that show he drops food off for his mom like his dad used to, but god man he was terrible to his mom. I felt so had for her the entire movie. Also it can't be stated enough how strong she is, cause she had just barely had Ame when Oka died. She was postpartum when she found his body. The emotional crap you go through during that time normally is horrible, let alone with a loss that major at the same time.
I've been a fan of Hisodas work since Summer Wars came out. Summer wars and Wolf children have not only been my personal favorites of his works, but also what I see as his two best. I generally say summer wars is his best and Wolf children is close behind. But I think you helped me recontexctualize my feelings. I think I now see them both as equals, both excellent for different reasons. One being an easier time for viewers less able to read the context but still get a strong sense of love and family (Summer Wars) and the other for those who want to think more, who want to look at the context beyond the story in the screen. I always and will always love Hisodas works because they have always been centered around some form relationship, and more often then not that being a familial relationship. Extended family, mothers, fathers, brothers. It's such a beautiful through like of his works and I'm always excited to see what relationship type we will get next. Even if it's kind of a rehash like Belle and her mother and father.
I absolutely adore this film ❤ I thought it sad that Yuki tired to force Ame into being human like her, shes a huge hypocrite and not as likeable as a characfer later one, imo. She and Ame get into a massive fight between them that never got resolved on screen 😢
Oh gosh will I be able to watch this video cause this movie is one I love with my whole heart but have yet to rewatch cause just reading the description makes me bawl like a baby 😭
I love this movie so much, but it's sad I can't watch this as many times as I want, but I have it as manga. This is so heartbreaking and I cry every time I read or watch this.
I still admire Wolf children besides the werewolf archetype and this is admired. Another lovely film in another film Japan Sinks 2020. Where the MCs are FILIPINO/JAPANESE , thus in a way even the Halfus (not pure Japanese) character can inspire as well the depiction of complexity.
I honestly dislike this reading of a film, because in many ways it celebrates conformity in societal expectations: woman is expected to settle down, to abandon her dreams, interests and quirks to be accepted into society, to eventually get married and reproduce, and man can be anything he feels like, even a Wolf. In the end, this movie in many ways teaches its children audience about this specific societal expectations and how it's "a happy ending" in the end. Gods forbid we make girls think they can consider their individual expression more important than societal conformity and childbearing.
@@demiraichan yes, Japan celebrates conformity, however we also can acknowledge what it comes with a price, and what the ending and a message of a film is not necessarily a most positive one.
Even Porter Robinson was inspired this movie's osts for his album. I really love this simple movie. And also holy shit, I forgot that chick definitely bang with a hot wolf dude, that's every furries and fujoshi fanfic girls' dream.
I just started started the video but 2:10 ur wrong While yuki is firey and wild she is the one who wants to fit in and chooses to hide her wolf self. Such a heavy and beautiful movie definitely my favorite Hosada. And when I shared it with my Mom and Grandmother it nearly broke them.
welp time to watch it before returning to this video.
This was a comforting video that made me feel sad and both at peace with my own views of the world around me.
Thank you.
Alright, time to pull my dvd copy of this film out of the attic for another watch! This video is extremely thorough, tysm for your work!

He's not from Wolf Children, but i think my favorite Japanese wolf is definitely Garurumon.
I remember making my mom and sister watch this movie with me, trying to get them into anime. My sister cried like a little baby at the end....
...
0:53 last I heard, the Japanese wolves were extinct…. 😔
Oh hey, it's that film about Korean-Japanese immigrants.
I love this movie so much, but it's sad I can't watch this as many times as I want, but I have it as manga. This is so heartbreaking and I cry every time I read or watch this.

Wolf children was one of those movies I watched Subed first then the dub
Never knew this existed...looks interesting.

I think mirai or boy and the beast are his best but wolf children is an og
I thought wolves are extinct in japan
UNDERRATED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know it's not the point but why didn't they have more than two children if he was the last of his species?
He died before they could, she was barely out of being pregnant. Bodies need to rest.
13:36 Thats not Yuki
🧭
Oh this movie! I thought it was really gross; the mother basically had sex with an animal.
It’s a fantasy, it is not supposed to taken too seriously but maybe she was too enchanted over a rare occasion that she fell in love with the wolf man
