    wolf children was the first anime film that, after watching it on my own, i told my parents that i wanted to watch it with them. i was having trouble connecting with them and sharing something that was special to me made me nervous, but they really liked it. i hugged my mom as the credits were rolling bc how can you not?? this movie is really a love letter to parents. i've shared some other anime films with them since then but that experience has a special place in my heart.

      This movie is a love letter to parents? Really? 3/4ths of the anime is showing the inhuman struggles of the mother, and in the end she is left. She gets injured searching for her son deep in the forrest and he finally finds her then dumps her in a parking lot.
      That's the thanks she gets for giving up MORE than everything for her kids.
      This movie is beautiful but also fucking outrageous for how the kids never repay their debt to their mother who sacrificed so much. Instead they dump her injured in a parking lot (why is she injured again? because of her kids).
      Outrageous. The ending had me fuming.

    Hana is the biggest trouper mom, EVER! She gives birth to two kids without entering a hospital or even employing a mid-wife. Taking care of said kids with no job but still manages to keep food on the table. Moving out into the countryside and not only rebuilding an abandoned house from the ground up but also plowing and preparing two vast expanses of land from scratch to make it suitable for farming food on and *not uttering a single complaint about the whole thing!* This woman puts her heart and soul into anything and everything she does and it shows!

    This is a film I can't watch without crying. I cry through so much of it, and I love how it handled the ACTUAL hardships you'd have living in the city if hybrid children were a thing. Spying neighbours, no dogs allowed but your kids are howling at night, barking at other dogs in the park, do you take them to a doctor or a vet, etc. They were all things I hadn't thought about being an issue with hybrid children until this film. Hana is a trooper, she deserves only good things.

His first name is partially visible, but his first name we cannot be too sure of (his name was never oficially given and in the credits he was named "wolf man". They first live in an appartment in a non real part of Tokyo. But after that Hana and the kids move to the countryside in Toyama prefecture. Specifically in the mountains near Kamiichi. As someone who also has Wolf Children as my favorite movie, this review is remarkable. You've clearly put a lot of thought and passion into this review. The point about nature and humanity being able to live parallel to one another while never truly being able to coexist was poignant, but also kind of tragic.
    The narrative framing Yuki and Ame's growth as needing to choose between being a human *or* a wolf always kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Their father seemed perfectly content with studying and working as a human while hunting as a wolf by night. I suppose you could make the argument that his death was the result of him trying to live in both worlds, but who's to say he wouldn't have suffered the same fate if he had decided to live exclusively as a wolf?
    We have no way of knowing if Yuki is going to continue to turn into a wolf, and perhaps regain a couple of her old interests, or if her transformation in front of Souhei was the final time she did so before fully becoming a human. It's pretty clear that Ame has abandoned his human half, since he doesn't feel that his life has any meaning as a human. I guess the film did this so the audience can draw their own conclusions about what happens after the end, but Ame and Yuki's seeming lack of duality still strikes me as bittersweet.
    But I digress. Keep up the good work!

    • @Lucas24997
      @Lucas24997 2 года назад +6

      Yeah the story is great, but it is a shame that they went with the idea of both humanity and natures not being able to coexist, as it basically forces the children to choose between their two sides.
      It could have had a better ending if they learnt to use what both forms offer to help them achieve their goals, for example Ame could have become a forest ranger who uses both forms as a way to protect the forest (which can also show how humanity also is capable of protecting nature).

      @@thelemon5069 Not really, it is clearly shown in the film that they are gonna have to choose one of the two paths, and that those are incompatible.

    I was just thinking about Yuki’s name. Its snow, when she was little she was more like a blizzard; boisterous, breaks everything and people avoid blizzard cause they’re scared of them, it scares her friends away, in order for her to still be in her “pack” she needs to be like a falling snowflake, calm, graceful and elegant. When she was younger she acts more like a blizzard.

    It's been years since I last watched Wolf Children. I've always felt hesitant to watch it back then because of how the story wasn't on par with my ideals. I read how Ame left his mother and sister, and that made me adamant to see the film. But after mentally going back and forth, I gave the film a chance. Wolf Children broadened my perspective about life, it was as if I saw myself in both Yuki and Ame, we were born to single mothers, we had identity crisis', those facts alone gave me the comfort and courage to not let my situation define me, because despite all their hardships, they never let anyone dictate who they should and shouldn't be, their mother never let them become victims of this treacherous world. Hana gave her children the freedom to understand themselves, she nurtured Ame and Yuki until they figure out their calling. Kudos to all single parents who has to brave through this world alone for the sake of their beloved.

    I can agree with you so much! The reason why I fell in love watching is that I was so relatable to me I was 6 years old when wolf children came out and the first time I watched it,it made me more independent and a new perspective in life, and also when I was younger I was so much like yuki I would always curious in things which would always get me in trouble, I used to live in a brick house with a huge backyard I would always run and catch bugs I would also catch some mice and when I reached the age of 5 I really wanted to go to school and I got to go I had the personality of yuki but the first time I went I was told off as a weird and unnatural child I was always called a dog because what I did as a child and I really didn’t care what other people thought of me but the more I grew up the more I understood what people thought of me which caused me to be isolating and cold to other people but not to mention sad as well cause I was forced to fit in eat time i acted as a child my mother would threaten to put me in military school which didn’t help at all and the first time I meet my step sister I was happy to has an older sister but once she got to know me she would always be with my little sisters instead of me which made me feel unloved this would always be jealous of my siblings for getting love instead of me each time me and siblings would get into fights I would always be the one scratching or biting them, but ever since I saw wolf children I felt compassion for them cause I can relate to them so much not to mention I really love nature currently I am still finding my identity and learning new things and I actually brought the wolf children manga it cost like 26$ but it was sooo worth it tho and that’s the reason why I love wolf children so much

    the snow scene is one my favourite things i've seen in a movie -- it's is equally as beautiful, brilliant & joyful as Ponyo's sea/car chase scene.
    if i had one critique of any Hosoda movies is that his character design/animation or just how they visually look, always looked flat -- the contrast it has against the beautifully drawn background is a bit of a distraction. it's worse in The Boy & the Beast, which i also quite liked.
    it's a shame, because Hosoda's visual storytelling is second to none -- eg. Summer Wars (the hand holding scene) or, and especially, the Growth montage here in Wolf Children.

    That still leaves my “your name” As my number one (maybe favorite of all movie)!! But this one became the second favorite of Anime, it is a powerful story!!! And I love how at the beginning in the girls memory says this gonna sound like a fairy tale story!! But that’s exactly what it is!!! You ain’t got nothing on telling stories like anime can do!! Disney Pixer, you got a couple!! But anime with the stories that are all original and heartwarming sometimes!! In a world that can be so messed up. Sometimes you could use a little hope.!!! This kind of movie brings hope !!

    Thank you for another beautifully made video. In keeping with Isla McTear's comments, I too found that this film grew on me over the years and now it's a firm favourite that never fails to bring a tear to my eye. You're quite correct that 'Wolf Children' actually helps us to appreciate the sacrifices parents make for their children, although somewhat ironically I haven't managed to persuade my own mother (now in her 80s) to watch it, as she's put off by the title. Oh well, perhaps she'll eventually give it a go. I can only hope.
    There's a video by Tony Zhou of the Every Frame a Painting channel, titled 'Wolf Children (2012) - The Lateral Tracking Shot,' which you may like to consider watching. Although Tony concentrates on the technical aspect of film making, his explanation of the lateral tracking shot that moves to and fro between Yuki and Ame's classrooms as they grow is simple and elegant in its execution. It encapsulates how the two children develop and eventually go their separate ways. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/pdSKot0psNg/видео.html
    Anyway, thanks again for your video. This channel is rapidly becoming a favourite of mine. Excellent work.

    This story is amazing because if you think about it. Everyone has a different approach with many different things regardless of positivity or negativity we are all connected to each other because we were both raized by and was born by a living thing. This is a difficult thing to do but its important for us to know and accept that we are all different and we will never truly come to the same conclusion. This movie was amazing.

    I remember watching this anime some years ago, a masterpiece. And it could have been perfect if it wasn't for presenting the wrong idea that humanity and nature are two separated things, humanity and human societies are part of nature, that is why every society that destroyed the nature around itself always gets destroyed with it; or why even in areas completely artificial like a city you can find how the nature is also present, from the pigeons who thrive in it to the small dandelions who grow in the cracks of the asphalt and concrete.
    In the film that idea even ruins, at least for me, the ending, as it shows both children deciding to embrace one of their two natures,making both Yuki and Ame arcs unsatisfying, as she is still hiding what she really is to the world, like a closed gay who has accepted that he is gay but cant show it to the world; and Ame has rejected his human side, which not only goes against Yuki arc of embracing who they really are, but also shows clearly the idea that humanity and nature are two separate and irreconciliable things.
    On the other hand the theme of motherhood is perfect, although the ending scene in the anime does a horrible job in showing the happy end that it has, as Hana is completely alone. It would have been better if it showed the children visiting her as independent adults (something that happens in the manga I believe).
    Also really great analysis of one of the best films that I have ever seen.

    I grew up on a bunch of Studio Madhouse films, but when this one first released I was like "Man this premise sounds some Twilight tier furry bait bullshit" until I finally saw it several years later. I felt so bad for sleeping on this film, it was a very beautiful very sad movie.
    An interesting film to compare and contrast this to is Song Of The Sea, which is as close to its Western equivalent out there about a brother and sister who are half human, half fey and their human father is raising them alone. (Brendan Gleeson voices the dad, too.) It's seeped in celtic lore and culture, a very beautiful and heartfelt film which came out around the same time as Wolf Children did.

      And what do mean like twilight? The first half of this movie is beauty and the beast then second half is the wonder years with werwwolves?

    If only Mamoru Hosoda stayed true to this level of filmmaking (and screenwritting, he should worked with Satoko Okudera every time). Wolf Children are the masterpiece of not only animated film, but film in general and I will never forget its premiere in Animefest 2013. It is a perfect study of a family and of the children - parent relationship, and it is also a perfect study about loneliness. I can´t watch it without being moved to tears, even after all those years, as it deeply resonates with me, partially because of the character design by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto that made Neon Genesis Evangelion charaters.
    The somewhat similar movie - The Red Turtle - is also wonderful, yet focused more on the relationship between men and a nature than on a family, but can´t reach the depth and complexity of Wolf Children.
    All subsequent Hosoda´s films, despite being quite good, cannot compete with Wolf Children. And is latest variation on a Beauty and the Beast is abysmal.

    I am one of those people who had a very hard time finishing the film, although I did push through in the end. There were so many things that annoyed me I am not sure where to begin.
    The most irritating scene was the bullying scene with Ame (namely, the other kids bullying Ame and Yuki stepping in). In contrast with Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice in English), not a single person with any authority, including Hana the mother, intervened, which goes against what the Yuki-injure-other-student scene was depicting: when there is a problem between students, parents step in, teachers step in, others step in. Hana seems to just not care if Yuki is doing well at school, what he is experiencing, what challenges he may be facing. If this film is about the trials and tribulations of parenting, Hana sitting down with Ame on the bullying issue would be very powerful, even if they don't agree on what is right or wrong or how to resolve it. Later on, Yuki asked Ame: why didn't you go to school today? I was expecting Ame to say all the problems he faced, instead, he just gets into a fight with her. I feel the raw emotion, but also very disappoint the director did not take the opportunity to address the real issue here: bullying. Ame eventually just escapes from everything, literally. Yuki is "tamed" by human society, learnt to "control" herself. This is also highly irritating as well because the central message of the film was clearly supposed to be about balance, the human side and the wolf side. Striking a balance is hard, and everyone has their own ways of doing it. Taming it or escaping from your problems do not balance anything or change anything.
    A Silent Voice addresses the bullying issue a lot better, albeit still had problems. I am glad to see Shoko fight back, physically, towards her bully, but disappoint to see Ueno gets rewarded for turning into an accomplice the moment our main male lead character falls foul of the authority, the teacher.
    I had other problems too, but I just get really irritated with the story to discuss them: 1. Social worker scene 2. Pet noise complain neighbour scene 3. Hospital searching scene 4. Saved money 5. Horticulture in the backyard 6. Communication between Hana and the Wolf 7. Family planning 8. Sohei's acceptance and what it symbolizes for the entire story
    This film erased Mamoru Hosoda from my list of directors-with-films-to-watch. I did watch Summer Wars and found it less bad, but it was no saving grace. This film was so irritating that it sunk the entire Hosoda ship for me, particularly since he really likes to talk about family, and I am really annoyed by it. I want to stress that I know I am the minority because I have not met a single person who does not like this film.

    • @Cloud-dq1mr
      @Cloud-dq1mr 3 года назад +2

      3/4ths of this film portrayed a very young person suddenly having children and then struggling alot with many hardships. Bullying in the movie was about 2 seconds.
      If you care more about those 2 seconds of bullying than the whole movie about the mom which you seem to ignore, then I feel sorry for your own mother. You probably take her for granted too.

    • @xxMapSyrxx
      @xxMapSyrxx 3 года назад +1

      @@Cloud-dq1mr There are WAY more problems with the rest of the film. Like I said originally that I was only going to discuss the bullying part, because it is most obvious what the problem is. It is also very concentrated to one particular part of the film. This makes it easier to discuss too.
      But the rest of the film? PILES of problems too. Way worse than the bullying part. But the bullying part was the MOST irritating because it clearly contravenes with what the central message of the film attempts to be.
      Key word is "attempt". Because as per my original discussion, it completely utterly failed to deliver on the central message of the film set out to discuss when Hana first meets her partner and discuss about identity and acceptance.
      I don't think it is that hard to see the film is an allegory for anyone living with physical or mental challenges. But the verdict it gave was incredibly regressive and counterproductive.
      Honestly, I paid too much attention to the rest of the film because I really wanted to know why I had such a visceral reaction to it. So repulsed by the depiction of family and motherhood in the film. Despite how much I don't like the film and how much time has passed since I last saw it, I will not stop discussing its problems, because I know this is a great yardstick to showcase other films I do like more than Wolf Children. It is an important analytical tool to evaluate other anime films I have seen and have not seen.
