Another "hot tip" for the newbies...if you don't want to have to redraw lines on the tape, you can score the lines with a razor knife to prevent tear-out as well.
I built a wooden tool box/beer tote just like this when all I had was a drill and and handsaw. This is a great first project and I still use it all the time.
I will link to Eric's episode when it is done. First week of June. There are plans for this tote ALTHOUGH it shows all the cuts being made with floor standing woodworking tools. But the basic measurements are in there if you follow along with this video using a jigsaw and a drill. bit.ly/2LqQX9X
I designed and made two similar but much less elegant versions of this many years ago for what was basically my first real woodworking project. They turned out OK but clunky looking but I used one of them pretty much every day.
Love the beginner-oriented project! I feel like sometimes creators feel like they need to make things more complicated for no real reason. Way to KISS! 👍👍
I tried that “tape on drill for depth stop” trick once, and the tape didn’t adhere to the drill so it just moved up as the drill went down. Way down. All the way through, to be exact 😄
This is great. I've made these beer totes before. But it's great to show people how they can build them with minimal tools. Always entertaining and educational!
i really like videos like this, im just dipping my toes into woodworking, drill, jigsaw and orbital sander are the only power tools i have so watching projects that dont require table saws or other big tools is really cool.
Well sure - anyone could make it if they had...the beer! Great tips on using the jigsaw. I used to grip my like it was just going to run away from me. Using the insulation is a great idea - I heard you talking about that on the podcast.
A tip i like to use to prevent blow out of edges is to use a large craft knife (box cutter ? ) to score the line, then cut outside the like, any chips will brak off at the score. Also, you used 4 tools (putty knife and handsaw) :P :D
We need more easy projects to do at home with basic tools :D !!!!! For example I am interested in an easy-to-make piece of furniture with drawers. Something like those library drawers. In the old style without the use of drawer mechanisms. Very nice please !
Leo GreenGaming make the boxes for drawers spandex then add strips of wood down the lengths of the sides. In the carcass of the furniture it goes in, attach wood strips with space in between slightly wider than the strip on the drawer. Add wax to the faces that will come in contact with each other so they slide easier. When putting the pieces in the carcass, use an extra strip you cut for the drawer sides and some playing cards to space it out and keep the spacing even.
The msn with the festool drill: "both of these tools are inexpensive" Seriously though, great video. Best libe is actually, woodworkers love overkill. Might get that in my shop!!
Another tip: Take a scrap piece of wood that is straight (ideally 2 pieces fastened together to create a 90 degree angle) to use as a guide to make sure the drill bit is going straight into the piece, not angled.
I'll try that. I have a set of Route 66 sodas' bottle that I'd like to display. May be if I extend the lenght ot the tote then cut it in half to keep one row of bottle....
Your comment about the ice gave me an idea! What about an easy to remove metal liner that you could make with just 1 or 2 metalworking tools. Then you'd be able to swap out the dividing pieces for the metal insert depending on the situation :-)
So the rails that hold the bottom panel in don't need any type of mechanical connection, just glue? Seems like the weight of the beer could possibly be too much? Great tutorial in any case. Thanks!
Do you have any good ideas for a Wood tote for caulking that can hold a caulk gun / wipes and caulk bricks and a soap sprayer ? I often find my self walk back and forward becuz i forget Half of it
Great little project and video David, although I'm curious why you decided to use the jigsaw and drill for this, instead of a circular saw and drill? Since it was all straight cuts it seems like it would have been a lot easier that way :)
Also, don't get the cheapest jigsaw! I had a Skil jigsaw for years and couldn't cut a straight line to save my life. I upgraded to a Bosch and it was a night and day difference. Bob at I Like to Make Stuff had a similar epiphany when he traded up his cheap jigsaw for a DeWalt and, yeah, there is an incredible difference.
For the sake of being a simple project, would it be a strong enough joint to just make the whole bottom a single piece of 1/2” and glue to the sides the same way so I don’t need to buy another piece of plywood and have less cuts? Some dowels could probably go into the bottom also.
Just an fyi, not every state may carry the 2 inch foam. It's climate dependent. They great news is that stuff can be glued together with simple pva (Elmer's) glue.
This video reminds me how much I miss instructional woodworking videos. I'm about tired of the frantic jump-cut, detail omiting, cool at all costs, youtube video format. Good to see some old school Dave.
Assuming it really is your FIRST woodworking project, here's a list of stuff you might need at the home store according to this video: drill, jigsaw, 5/8" Fortsner bit, 1/4" drill bit, blue tape, double-sided tape, ca glue, wood glue,1/8" plywood [bottom], 1/2" plywood, 2" foam insulation, sandpaper, spray adhesive, tape measure, pencil, straight-edge, big putty knife, flush trim saw, 5/8" dowel, 1/4" dowel, hammer, clamp [maybe], rubber gloves, Minwax Wipe-On Poly, rags, bottle opener, jigsaw blades-wood-fine cut. NOW - what did I miss????
So , I will have to watch another beer tote video for free measurements ,,. Regards Alf ,,,, ps , use clear parcel tape over the lines , just saying,, stay safe
Baby voice: you didn't say "check it". How am I suppose to know when the video starts? For real though simple is better when starting out. You do not always have to start with the table saw, jointer, and planner. Those three get thrown around way to much on forums when beginners are asking questions IMO.
Another "hot tip" for the newbies...if you don't want to have to redraw lines on the tape, you can score the lines with a razor knife to prevent tear-out as well.
Oh yes! This is great!
@@MakeSomething Day is made. Can't believe I got a reply. This is right up there with the time Chunk from The Goonies liked my Twitter post.
Hot tip for the newbies: "Never sand a dowel in public.." ;-)
Love to watch videos like these! Please continue to make more videos like these that require less expensive tools like a table saw and band saw!
I built a wooden tool box/beer tote just like this when all I had was a drill and and handsaw. This is a great first project and I still use it all the time.

Still chugging along learning how to be snarky and shape wood! Onward!
I designed and made two similar but much less elegant versions of this many years ago for what was basically my first real woodworking project. They turned out OK but clunky looking but I used one of them pretty much every day.
Dowel trick at the end is a great beginner woodworker tip. Had not thought about doing this.
This is just what I needed as a guy who is 21 years old and has never really used tools before but has always been fascinated by them

One of the money genuine responses man, just goes to show you how much you can build with minimal tools !! Love it
Very cool. I've made these in the past for easy Christmas gifts and people love them. Love seeing them made "simply!"
Will look to make on of these myself, and drink the beer of course... cheers, Harry Shedtopia
I don’t drink anymore but the tips in this video are great! Thanks and take care! ✌️
Love the quick tips. It's always the small things that are the big things
Great project! With my limited mobility in the shop, I will still be able to get this done! Thanks for all you do, David!!
Great video! Brings back memories. I think a beer tote was literally my first woodworking project. Thanks for sharing!
Great!!!I really like when you make things with few tools.Thx!
This is a great beginner tutorial! Cheers from locked down Ontario!
Great intro project that anyone can do and get great results. A million ways to customize and make it your own, too. Thanks for sharing!
Nice work, my shop isnt set up after we've moved so i dont have the big tools. I think ill make this on the weekend!

Using the rigid foam insulation as a sacrificial surface is great. I'm sure I've seen you use before. It just didn't click. Great video as always.
You obviously haven’t priced rigid foam insulation lately. It’s damn near the price of plywood at my HD.
Also great choice of beer. Fat Tire!!!!

Really fun two tool build David! This would be a great first wood working project for people!
This is awesome sauce sir! Love the variety of tools and techniques you show us all . . . now i need a beer ;)

You could use a clear piese of plexi or acrylic for the sides.

I think the circular saw may be a bit more intimating to newbies. Plus I hate using one.
