Everyone in that theatre was taught a lesson in musicianship that night.
I seriously don't think Alex Lifeson was ever given enough credit for it ability.
He could make the guitar talk
He is recognized by other guitarists as one of the greats.
Only from people who doesn't know shit about music
I totally agree
He is widely recognised by his peers. Also, you have to remember that the individual members of Rush are all so talented that being a member of the unchanged power trio lineup for four decades is a huge credit all by itself.
My God they were good. If they were any tighter they'd snap. Best friends until the end.
Thaty's what they said in an interview. They've played together for thirty years but are still best mates, leaving close one to another in Toronto (or is it Montreal ?), holding barbecues n'stuff…
They stayed normal people til the end yet played like something out of this world
even death doesn't change that........
@@pateris Alex & Geddy live not too far from each other in Toronto. Been band mates since '68. Neil (RIP) was the "new guy" on drums in ' 74. Toured together for 40 years. More consecutive gold & platinum albums than any other group, right after the Beatles & Rolling Stones. Lyrics always had meaning, no explicit profananity or sex in any of their songs. And the kicker that proves they're just genuine, decent Canadian guys.... they're still happily married to their high school sweethearts.
@@nobodyimportant6851 And they have a good sense of humour too !
The best song ever written about the power of music. Fucking hell do I fucking love these three wonderful men.
Indeed!
So do I, and I usually dislike prog !!!
three of the best musicians rush rules forever rest in heaven mr peart miss your wonderful lyrics and drumming
ABSOLUTELY!!! Been listening to them since early 80's.
Magic Power by their Canadian brothers Triumph ain't to shabby either.
Neil Peart was a magician on the drums, and an extraordinary soul with an incredible gift for lyrics and storytelling. The world is lesser without him. The great moment in this video starts at the 2:06 point, where Geddy sings the epic line "one likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity." Behind him, Alex and Neil smile mischievously at each other as they share the inside joke: they are (finally) singing these lines at - of all places - the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the center of the establishment music industry that had improperly rejected them for so long. Living well is the best revenge - and Neil certainly did that for as long as his body would let him. RIP.
OMG, I hadn't caught that previously! Thanks for pointing it out. Makes this performance all the better for that moment.
Ha! I'm glad I read this comment before that point came up.
Beautifully put. Living well is the best revenge.
Thank you. This was the most genius band of all time indeed
Perfectly put , thanks for helping more people become aware of what we all had !
Been listening to Rush for close to 40 years and I still shake my head and go "Holy Fuck"
Drummers ...take note. Neil LOOKS at what exactly he is striking. Such focus and intensity....RIP Professor .
I agree ... Neil rules !!! ... Master !!
It was nice to see him grinning at some inside joke with Alex at about 2:15 or so. A less serious moment. Still miss him.
@@brianball6670 It's what Ged's singing at the moment, in the context of the venue. =D

Simply the greatest of all time RIP Neil
In few words: "Thanks Neil Peart, Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee"
Have to admit these guys are truly amazing.
R.I.P Neil Peart
The master of the art of percussion.
The 80s would not have been the 80s without these guys
3 guys that sounds like 6 onstage. Boy, they sure don't make them like this anymore. Talent, hard work and decades of experience. Glad we have it here online; I fear we won't see the likes of these guys anytime soon.
Yep, we never will again unfortunately. I know Neil is rockin it up in Heaven.
nah man don't despair. The internet is spawning young people that were like these guys and now they can find all this and absorb it learn from it. We are going to get some great stuff because the Lives and music of great Bands like Rush exist in perpetuity and easily available for everyone. Maybe we never get another as good But Mona Lisa is just one brilliant piece of art we wont ever see it again but we saw a lot of art that was influenced by it.
This is what I LOVE about Rush. It's a 3 man team putting out this incredible sound.
and you won't find three men with more love and respect for each other either.

2:18 That smile on Neil when Geddy sings ".....shatters the illusion of integrity", and the whole RRHOF deal, says it all.
Playing this song right there is irony in overdrive
I think they're just enjoying the music there, but the lyrics still rung true
They knew exactly what they were doing by plying this song. It was a great FU to the higher ups of the music industry.

2:14 Neil looking at Alex during the "glittering prizes" part is priceless. Miss him so much!
When I wasn't even legal to get into a club, my brother invited me to the Agora in downtown Cleveland for a Monday night concert series they had featuring Rush. When we walked up to the door to get in, ( as my brother had met the sons owner in college) we were greeted by Cleveland s finest who said, "sorry buddy, we're sold out" as there was a long line of people waiting for the doors to open. My brothers friend shook hands with the cop, the lady in the ticket window stamped our hands with out money or id's, and we walked right in. We went right up to the stage, took the table closest to the stage, as the place had not even opened, and was ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY, not to mentioned deafened as they played their entire debut album. My ears range for 3 days afterwards, and I have been a die hard fan ever since. Incredible talent and a sound and history others can only dream of. I miss them.
RIP Neil.
The holy Trinity of Rock. 3of the best musicians to ever pick up instruments
One of the amazing things about this band is they always look like they are playing within the comfort zone of their abilities. It’s just that their abilities far exceed those of mere mortals…
Geddy pounding on that bass was AWESOME !!!! Each one was a master at their craft. Love it !!!! RIP Professor

Rush should have been inducted long before 2013. They were consummate professional lyricists and musicians. Somehow they kept the creative juices alive over four decades of musical change. Kudos to excellence.
That look from Neil to Alex when "glittering prizes" came along was priceless
It's amazing how 3 people can make so much sound and make it badass!
Rush is what it truly means to be a musician. Always evolving, never stopping, no room for ego
A trio at the top of the game and such a unique sound...So glad there in the HOF and the should have been there a lot sooner!!!
3 people making all this music without autotune and tracks. Truly amazing.
They used some autotune in the 80s but this performance is raw.
@@nahiyanalamgir7056 you sir are wrong, they didnt use autotune in the 80s, as it was invented in 1997, they did have CD and audio recordings enhanced before they hit the markets. They have stated that they don't use it.
@@jamesjoy742 They used vocal enhancements and pitch correction I believe. I didn't mean autotune as an audio processor created in 1997; my bad.
What made them legends was their dedication to their art & refusing to compromise, less then perfect was not an option.
i was 12 when the first time i heard this song from cassette player in my brother's bed room, 35 yrs later still listening until today
You can listen to there music 50 years from now and it still will sound fresh. This music you will still able to listen to it and never get tired of it
That was tight AF.
Rush played my high school... with John Rutsey back in 1975ish... I missed them.
Luckily got to see them New Years Eve 1978 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Killer show.
Still see Geddy at the ballpark... Skydome (pre-COVID) from time to time...
I was 17 when I first heard this and 40 years later I love it even more now, our music keeps us young inside regardless of what we look like on the outside.
I remember first hearing Tom Sawyer in a delivery van I drove back then. It's was just released that day.
This performance had every bit of spirit and energy from each fan behind all those Hollywood folks. Perfect gentlemen absolutely perfect 💖💖💖🙏🇺🇸
I love this band so much that I quit countless jobs and went to see them 105 times starting with moving pictures at the Philadelphia spectrum all the way until the last show in Inglewood. My only regret is that I wasted so much money on food and shelter instead of going to more RUSH concerts 😳
Relatable!
I saw them at The Spectrum two times- Power Windows and Grace Under Pressure. Absolutely wish I had seen them more times. Life always got in the way.
Three 'Masters' of music. Proud to be Canadian! Rush at their finest!
Yep, this is one time you Canadians beat us Aussies, we had nothing quite like Rush.
The rock and roll hall of fame should be honoured they bothered to acknowledge it ;)

They had a one of a kind sound with Geddy on vocals and bass
Neil on drums and Alex on lead guitar

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame invited me to watch this video called “Spirit of the Radio”. Here, it’s closer, listed as “Spirit of Radio”. Sigh. Rush is too good for you. I enjoyed watching “The Spirit of Radio” again.
Rush has taught us to be perfectionists. Don't be messing song titles up, not with the Holy Triumvirate
You got that right!
Geddy Lee on bass is a beautiful vision to my eyes and a beautiful sound to my ears ....there's no better bassist out there !
That’s actually kind of funny geddy does the clap thing and than seems to kinda remember “oh yeah this isn’t our usual concert with like 50,000 hardcore rush fans” ....

Rush is a very otherworldly group of guys with a kismet connection that could never be stopped . If there ever could be perfection this is it. ✌👍🌹
My two boys grew up listening to Rush as I played air drums with their little arms to their uncontrollable giggles. Their first concert was my last concert. Time Machine tour 10 years ago next week I believe.
They met me for dinner last week and I hear Digital Man Live pumping in the air before I could even see his truck. Proud Pops.
Sucks we'll never hear the fruits of their creativity again, but damn glad we got to enjoy the group as long as we did. Thank you gentlemen. RIP Neil.
Best band I had the privilege to see live, 13x, without a doubt the best percussionist ever.
I've been a RUSH fan since 2112. Being a drummer in the 1970s - 80s was an awesome time to learn from a lot of talented drummers but Neil Peart was the highest challenge to be able to pull off his drum fills and timing. Congrats to these 3 brothers! I'm so glad they were finally recognized for their professional musicianship and their brand of rock n roll.
So many pieces to a Rush tune. Such a powerful performance for a trio live on TV. Reminded how frickin good these guys were.
Five decades of not just staying together, but making awesome music the whole time! RIP Neil Peart.

but is the HoF deserving of THEM? 🤔
Doesnt mattter they were Canadian, the greatest 3 man band ever !!!
These 3 amazingly talented souls have filled the world with wonderful music.
Three fantastic musicians who all happen to be in the same band.
What a freaking great band. Just a great, great band.
The years obviously put an strain on Ged’s voice but right up til the end they were at the top of their game musically.
Can you imagine Geddy trying to sing Fly by night or even Bastille Day.
Last time I saw Rush playing live was back in 2013 at Festival d’été de Québec and I remember clearly that the musicianship was outstanding, but that the vocals were hard to witness.
I love Rush but I think they should have got a new singer at least for live performances many years ago. Ok Rush is a 3-men band but Geddy’s has aged and their early work is too hard (which is perfectly understandable).
Some people age and remain able to sing their earlier stuff without too much trouble (thinking of Sting and Rodger Hodgson), but others can’t and it’s ok.
The production team melodyned it (tried to fix it) after the fact and badly mangled the vocal. I’ve recorded vocals for years on various projects, so I know the sound of these bad melodyne jobs. Someone was incredibly lazy in the mix down office and completely destroyed this one. Geddy most certainly sounded much better than this at the actual show.
@@photoniccannon2117 I just told you that he does not lol. He has aged and he cannot sing his work from the early albums, it's perfectly understandable. That's all. No magic, no trickery, no wrong mix.
@@Ogilla I don’t disagree with you my friend. Just sharing the results of my own research and my experiences with these tools. I have likewise noticed that Geddy’s voice has definitely changed, but it sounds quite different on their own DVDs than it does here. This particular video was was the HOF’s production team and was very likely not managed by Rush. This is probably not something Rush or their producers would have ever done themselves.
And like you, I cut him slack as well. He maintained most of his range all the way to the very end. It’s impossible to maintain his 30’s level physical stamina all the way into his 60s. He did an impressive job given his age, but nobody could deny he’s had more trouble these days than in the past. And you said it well. It’s totally understandable. Geddy still did better than many other rock singers his age, and for that we give him credit and cut him slack on the rest. (He was a phenomenal singer really. Never got the credit he deserved for it.)
But with tools like Melodyne, they are VERY common in the industry and at minimum, 80-90% of the songs on the radio have used them. These tools have a characteristic sound if misused. We are quite used to hearing it so we don’t easily notice the artifacts anymore, but the very rapid pitch shifts and shadow notes (the underwater feeling) is VERY characteristic of Melodyne. Rush was unusual in that they did not use magic for his vocals or treat them. Most bands can’t say the same.
Essentially, these tools try to detect two things: pitch and formant. But singers never hit a note dead on, and they never transition without a ramp up to the new note. As a result, the detection algorithms have to have parameters on how quickly they will jump to a new note. If this timing is too fast, it sounds artificial and robotic. If it’s too slow, it doesn’t do any corrections. This is why a lot of manual input is required when using these tools, and it’s how they can sound so transparent and totally invisible. But it literally has to be done by hand for good results. (I’ve had to correct some pretty bad vocals before. A professional could probably elaborate better than I could, but safe to say, it’s definitely tedious.)
It sounds like what happened here was that someone didn’t do this process manually and relied on the built algorithms to try to detect the original and “correct” notes. When it thinks it detects a note and it’s off from the root/correct pitch, it will try to correct it in place, and it also shifts the formant while it’s at it (making the note sound “deeper” or “higher” as if it was sung at that actual pitch. It does this seamlessly if it’s correcting to the right pitch, but has some pretty funny-sounding results if the algorithm is wrong.) But when these notes are detected in a choppy way without manual input, the algorithm is always trying to force notes that aren’t actually incorrect into places that they aren’t supposed to be. And while it’s at it, it does so very fast, often bouncing rapidly between several notes before actually settling. And it even tries to correct the “ramp up” transitions between notes. These ramp up transitions are where the washy underwater feeling comes from. It’s trying to force a note where there is none. And it can totally mangle an otherwise decent vocal because those transitions aren’t actually natural.
The end result is that very characteristic strained, glassy, washed out/underwater sounding vocal. That’s exactly what seems to have happened here. It’s very different from the sound of their official DVDs or any of their live shows (or anything Rush themselves ever released).
But I have to give Rush immense credit. They stayed away from these tools and released honest live albums even into their 60s. It’s rare in the industry. I respect it and have always enjoyed Geddy’s vocals. The only album where production ever really used these tools was TM (you can hear the difference from the cellphone recordings vs. the DVD. They weren’t overdubbed. They were just treated properly.)
I have a feeling that the rock and roll hall of fame producers probably did this one. this whole thing doesn’t sound like something Rush would do. I have to say it’s still phenomenal recording/video. And it’s Rush. Any rush show is always over the top.
Best regards my friend, and cheers to a fellow Rush fan.

Right on. The only reason I even watch these RRHOF videos is because they commemorate Rush giving the finger to the machine. Alex Lifeson's acceptance speech was exactly what the HOF deserved.
Great example of what happens when 3 gifted people come together and are able to withstand the test and temptations of time and fame. They can still make killer good music.

They had the thrill of being the only genuine thing in the room.

"All this machinery making modern music can still be open-hearted."
This class also had Heart, Public Enemy, Donna Summer, Randy Newman & more. You may not like these other genres or acts, but Rush literally sings about appreciating the creative journey. It's OK to dislike an artist without discounting their vision.

A reworking of a line from The Sound Of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel that said:
"And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence"
What I love about Rush is they did what they wanted and gave the finger to the establishment. You can't argue with success.
For some reason I always tear up at 1:26 when they go back to the main riff and Geddy has the crowd following. It's so cool.
I love the look between Neil and Alex at 2:14, Neil's smile just lit up the room.
That was something special. I saw about 30 Rush concerts over the years and hardly remember ever seeing them do that.
I think they were amused at Geddy's voice. Other commenters said Geddy was singing with a cold. They were probably surprised he pulled it off. :)
You mean right as Ged was singing the line that Neil wrote, "But glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity"? At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? While they were getting inducted? After years of being ignored by the Rock and Roll hall of fame and Rolling Stone?
