Is This Last Job Fit for the Chainsaw? - Episode 260 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

- Let's get this cutwater (stem or bow of the boat) shaped up, shall we? Plus, more 12 volt electrical work, the worm shoe is installed, the last of the pitch repairs on the deck are carried out, we get a varnish and finish report from Ross and George, and the biggest visual progress possibly of them all: the beautiful toe rails are installed.
Subscribe to Bob’s channel for updates about the progress on the dinghy: / @theartofboatbuilding
You might remember the bronze brackets for the toe rails being fabricated by MS Fabrication of Dorchester, Massachusetts: Evan cut each piece with his waterjet machine, and Steve welded them together. They've since been bolted to the deck, waiting for these long pieces of oak to be bolted to them.

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Good morning and greetings from Texas! You guys are making some amazing progress. Really exciting to watch! My cross country ride is going great and so is the fundraising!! Thanks A2A community!!
Cindy from Ft. Hancock, TX
We love ya, Cindy!!
This is a masterpiece. You've come so far from pouring the lead to this beauty!
LOVED "meeting" Madison and hearing a bit about her project.
I’ve missed you guys these last few weeks!! Things are looking beautiful, Steve!! Nothing like binge watching 3 episodes in a row this Monday
Nice! Welcome back!
I hope Alix is doing well. We miss him.
We hear he’s doing very well.
Photography was so awesome, I have sawdust on my floor. Great teamwork.
That’s so kind, Sonya!
I can’t believe how fair you have come and how close the splash date is approaching. Your on schedule to meet
I believe Steve needs a shout out for being able to keep that Plastic roofing tar OFF his hands!!
I would watch a live stream of this boat build all day. 😅 been following for years. Can't believe it's only a few months out from finished.
Aw thanks, Stephen!
Seeing the bulwarks on is another nice milestone!
Say what you will, apart from the actual boat building, the filming/cinematography is amazing - bravo! 👍
Thanks so much, that’s very kind.
I love the chainsaw. Its always hard to grasp the size of the boat from the videos, but seeing Steve just ripping in it with a chainsaw really shows how big and sturdy it is.
Very heartwarming to watch the great team of tradesmen , arriving to assist Steve push through with Arabella . Everything looks top notch .. go team go !
Wow, I remember watching the worm shoe getting made years ago with Alix. Fantastic to see it installed.
*- Yup. Agreed.*
I followed a lot of the early build videos and recently was algo-blessed with the latest updates. Did Alix just move on to different adventures?
@@farmerdave33 I would love to know too.
@@farmerdave33 .
*- I forget which video it was a year ago or so, where Steve detailed that Alex and he are long time friends who planned to do this, but {broadly, if I remember correctly} Alex had new inspirations and a family to consider so they ended their working/build partnership.*
*- However, Alex still does voice overs and helps where he can.*
Nope, Alix hasn’t done voiceovers in about three years. He did indeed move on, spurred by family obligations and a few other goals. Check out episode 200 for a little more info. Our home lives have always been personal to us and not a topic of the videos. Cheers!
The poor shavings and sawdust that DID NOT get to sail the world. The boat burning down would not suck. Nor would it be catastrophic. Or terrible. Or horrific. There has to be a better word. Apocalyptic?! The amount of time spent on A2A??? Burning it down?? That's an apocalypse. The amount of fire safety comments I've made over the years and you've kept her safe! KEEP GOING!! We're almost there! FANTASTIC video!! 💯❤️❤️
🙌
I have watched Acorn to Arabella from day one. It has added a lot of joy to my life! Thanks.
Thanks so much for being here and for your support, Gregory!
x2
Last clip - Now I know how to build a boat. Just stick a bunch of boards together then plane off all that doesn’t look like a boat. 😂😊. It’s been a long journey but drawing to the beginning of life on the water. Great epic job.
Ha!
Fantastic work, Victoria the tender is also looking amazing
The Husqvarna has definitely been the MVP on this build from day one. 👍
The toerails are absolutely stunning! Arabella is certainly a work of art.
I love the look of the deck, amazing.
I had the pleasure of working with a man I considered one of the most talented, most intelligent carpenters I ever met. When he talked about the best carpenters he ever worked with, they were all boat builders. Thanks Richard for all your patience, and your willingness to pass on your knowledge.
Thanks for sharing your story and memory of Richard... cheers!
Hi to all from West Cork in Ireland. Wonderful to see an experienced pro handling a chainsaw, your going to miss it Steve when all is complete. Arabella is looking so beautiful. BTW, I would love to know the artist and track playing while Steve is chainsawing, such a beautiful piece of music. Keep up the great work, looking forward to the next 90 days.
Very nice progress. Good to see the worm shoe that was fabricated so many episodes ago finally get installed.
Wow, less than 100 days! Awesome! I can't wait and am so happy for you and the crew.
Steve's skillful with the chainsaw, next project for it is a figurehead :D
In which Ben makes groundbreaking strides in the art of camera-ing with his innovative "sawdust cam." Thanks, people. Everything seems to be coming together now.
great shot, yes! Innovative or groundbreaking is a bit far fetched.
20 minutes feels so very short with all the work going on. It flew by. Love you guys!
We left out a lot of the sanding 😉
All the helpers are doing great work. The electrics are way out of my understanding but I love watching the installation of all that system.
Glad you’re enjoying it!
First video i ever watched was the smelting talk and boy have y’all come a long way in those few years
Glad you’re here for the journey, Daniel!
Cool to see R+L Carriers delivering freight! I drive for them myself near Cleveland Ohio.
Nice!
Looking great Steve like the worm shoe when they striped yaba the worms were unbelievable
I've been thinking for the last few videos - Arabella is looking so nice!!! The deck, in particular, is really beautiful. Nice work.
Thanks so much, Gabriel! Happy Friday to you.
The closer you get to launch the more exciting this gets!
Wheee! Thanks, Rick!
Always fun to watch a master work with a chainsaw...
Happy Friday everyone, No matter how many times I watch Steve wield that chainsaw, I always break into a cold sweat LOL!!!!!!
Happy Friday, Aynsley!
“Weapon of choice”- how true!
Good morning Arabella crew and fans! I am amazed at how the sheer beauty of this boat is revealed each week. Victoria is coming along nicely, Bob sure knows how to make things beautiful. Still praying for your mom and KP. I'm also praying for all of yours safety and that the build continues to reach its goal of hitting the water in June! See you next week!
Cheers and happy Friday, Kathy!
When Steve began trimming the cutwater and I finally got a good look of the final form of the front, I suddenly realized man Arabella has gorgeous lines. That is one beautiful boat!
As always, on time and totally absorbing viewing. Professionalism.
This is the way we fair the boat, fair the boat....
Great editing Ben... and great camera work too... the shot of the sawdust blowing right into the camera was priceless... I'm going to try my hardest to make it to the launch.
Bravo on the go power, I have been using go power walk on panels on my Rhodes 40 yawl for five years with awesome results. I only start the motor for hot water while at anchor.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Nice to see you're still uploading on Holidays. Happy Friday and Easter to everybody from Plymouth UK
Happy Friday, Phil!
From now on we should just call the chainsaw Steve's boatwright plane. 🍻
Another classic Ben. The fade to black after the website stand up was most appropriate. Great pacing.
You've got a great crew building this. You can tell everyone is very passionate about the project
I'm really looking forward to launch day! But Fridays are going to get lonely without the sound of the planar and the sight of sawdust. I guess the open water and beautiful scenery will just have to do.
Give ya alot of credit building a wooden boat.... I wouldn't want to maintain one....Good job n be well.
I wish these episodes were twice as long.
Aw shucks. Well we're so glad you're watching!
You could save the Cherry Chips from the Profiler and sell in bags to Arabella BBQ Fans. I still haven't used my bag of Oak Mix sawdust from the Open Day Weekend, but soon! I just joined on Patreon!
Aw thanks for all the ways you support, Andrew!
Finally! Some festooning.😊
Man I was hooked when you poured the lead. What an amazing story. I look forward to my Friday vid. I’m so pumped for you all. ❤️
Almost as a joke to the "build a boat in a day" line, after Arabella is finished to where she is ready to sail, take and do a edited 24 hour video from start to finish (I believe the start would be the lead keel being poured) just as a marker and a challenge for those that have watched through the whole to see if they remember all that happened. Could hide some Easter egg things for people to find.
The start would be cutting trees. 👍🏼
So which one of you is responsible for those clever titles for Steve? “Light as a feather, stiff as a board”. I’m watching every week just to see what new one you come up with. 😂
That’s Ben!
I like the notion that the deck is now pitch-perfect.
Heeeey we see what ya did there.
@TheDigitalMermaid. A friend of mine in Maryland is also in process of converting to electric propulsion.
A whole lot of LiFePO4 cells needed. He was also planning for a decent chunk of solar hung off the stern as well as a towed prop generator for when they're under sail.
Cool project.
That's awesome to hear! I'm currently in Grasonville, MD getting the 12v system upgraded for the trip home! Where abouts is your friend?
@@TheDigitalMermaid Harrington Harbor.
@@dchubb42 About an hour or so south of me. :)
That deck looks so nice. It'll be great to lay on in the sun. 🥴👍
Heart warming to see such a large crew. Mike 🇦🇺
Oh what a grand day in the future if Arabella and Tally Ho just happen to run into each other.
Loved the sawdust storm shots..🙂
She is looking gorgeous Team Arabella.
Cheers!
Wow....taking a chainsaw to the hull 96 days before launch........oh yeah, that's not stressful!! Hahahaha! The Digital Mermaid.........very cool Boat, and project. I love the sawdust camera shot at 16:38 ! Guys....be careful of the sweatshirt drawstrings over the power tools; I like all of you!! DD
Another great A2A update. Thanks for sharing
🙌
Clever use of snow!
Good afternoon Akiva and Crew 😸and Anne and Ben too 😸. I finally got electricity back this afternoon after 2&1/2 days in the cold an dark here
in Montreal and internet just got back on line a short while ago too ( you may have heard we had a bit of an ice storm that caused the whole electrical grid to crap out here in Quebec , and I was a bit put out that I wasn't going to be able to watch at 7 am as my usual 😾) so I'm finally able to watch todays episode 😻with all the other subscriptions I have , I had to watch you guys first ❤😺 Steve the toe rails look beautiful and the bronze cleats are still magnificent !
you and Robyn are going to be the envy of all the other Sailors who see Her ! / can't wait for next week ! 😸😺
Hey there ya are! Glad you've got power back! Happy Friday! -Anne
@@AcornToArabella / thanks Anne 😸
NICE job once again A 2 A crew!
Thanks, Russell!
I noticed how much grayer Steve's beard has gotten over the years. Boat stress!
Every time I see an open flame in one of your videos I'm afraid that one day the whole projekt is set on fire.
PS: Wrote that before the snowing part 🙂
🙌👍
Excellent stuff bro
Lunchtime here in France! Happy Friday...richard
Happy Friday, Richard!
Love the intro!
A surgeon with that chainsaw!
Happy Friday, A2A crew!
Go team go!
Happy Friday, Paul!
Toe Rail looks beautiful that's for sure. Awesome progress guys and gals. Ya that's for sure if you burnt down the boat now that would suck suck bigtime but lets be real its not like its never happened before. So yea grab that snow.
Great Video !
Thanks, Jakob!
thank you
Happy Friday and Good Friday to the gang. Steady progress on Arabella, Victoria looks good too. Thanks Ben.
Happy Friday, Tom!
00:26 Nice one, keep it up!
Good morning, 'bella fam! Happy Friday! ☕
🙌☕️ Good morning! #a2acoffeclub
Yay ... You went for "Youth Services"
there is a you tube video chronicling the building of the wooden pt boats from ww2 and they brought in norwegian craftsman who cut the keels swinging their adzs. pretty neat to watch them make a razor thin cut and finish by hand.
They’re remarkably easy to control! With practice, of course.
I don’t think many people realize just how rough shipping things can be. At least your panels were alright.
Yeah piling them like that under everything was… less than optimum.
Ben, Can I complain about the L-cut at 15:35. Seeing the shaper cutter being adjusted while still hearing it running was a bit scary.
Thanks for the feedback!
NIce music edit in this video!
When you took the Chain Saw to it, I fully expected it to turn into a snake complete with scales and a snake's head Masthead. With a set of rattles at the stern on the top of the rudder.
If a glue up fails at the joint as opposed to the wood tearing, you failed to make a proper glue joint. When wooden aircraft are built, every joint is accompanied by a test block made from the same two pieces of wood and tested to destruction. If any joint fails, the entire section is removed and redon.
There I was thinking he was going to use the chainsaw to make a hole for the front door. An important part of any ship.
Greetings from Wimbledon in Great Britain and thanks very interesting video.Keep up the good work guys.
Thank you, Francis!
Great episode. Regarding riveting the toe rail; no, you don't want to do that. Too difficult to remove/service/repair as you and the boat get sorted out. Toe rails get wear.
Well, I surely have been pronouncing Lignum Vitae wrong for my entire adult life! LOL Thanks for the update Ben. ;]
😁 when someone pronounces a word wrong, but knows the meaning, it means they’ve read about a thing but might not have discussed it out loud. 🙌 all good! -Anne
In Stephen's hands, the Husqvarna IS a fairing tool ! Ever done any chainsaw art carving I wonder ? Kinda curious where so many solar panels will be mounted, answers next week; perhaps ?
mostly on the housetop.
Amazing
Thanks! Happy Friday, James!
You’re pretty good with that chainsaw Steve
Nice to see the pointy end becoming a fair bit more pointy :-) (note "pointy end" is a nautical term I picked up in the Navy while serving on a somewhat larger heavy cruiser, the USS Chiago CG-11). My best yo KP, let her know she is missed, as I'm sure you know all to well.
😁
Stay safe.
Good morning from Siesta Key Florida
Happy Friday, Bill!
Pretty disappointed to be honest.
The fact you guys have milked the process of this whole build.
As Ben mentioned, it shouldn’t have taken more than a day, maybe two. Three days with good weather.
After all, it’s only a completely handcrafted custom vessel built in a backyard by an amateur shipwright and some friends; with materials harvested and garnered from his own land.
I’ve watched EVERY single episode of this build, I even went back last week to make sure I didn’t miss any of the falling videos or keel videos. Turns out; I’ve been here since the beginning.
Absolutely stoked for the whole team.
Thanks for all you’ve provided us with. Can’t wait to see this suckers maiden voyage, champagne smash and all.
🙌
Greetings from a sunny Bedfordshire, in time for my lunch as usual.
Cheers and happy Friday, Nick!
Good Friday morning everyone!
Happy Friday, Dan!
That first shot at the very start of the video. I would love to see a lime lapse of the entire process. the exact camera angle you have set up from start to finish. No editing or talking, just a long video would be awesome and relaxing to play in the background while I'm mainly focused on other things at work 🙂
Ah, wrong channel haha. This is Acorn to Arabella not the Art of Boat Building 😅.
Still glad you're here ;)
BEN: Getting pretty nice Harry Nilsson vibes out of the music today. Nice job.
