  • I got a new window unit! This unit is to replace my 6 year old LG window unit. it was still working, and still works great, but it's found a new home at another location, so I got a replacement for my room.
    This video documents the first 3 minutes of running. No commentary, just you and the unit. You'll hear it start for the very first time, as well as ramp up to full speed. (does that hint at what this unit is?)
    Points of interest:
    0:14 - First Start
    1:13 - Ramp
    2:00 - Ramp 2
    2:40 - Ramp 3, Full speed
    NOTE: this is NOT a review. this is simply documenting the first run of this unit. there will be NO commentary. A more formal overview will be posted at a later date.

    We recently bought a GE Profile 13500 BTU Inverter Windows AC, and the compressor makes a similar high-pitched buzz when it slowly starts up.

  • @dynatrak

    It's sure has an interesting running sound. I bet it keeps the humidity consistent, by the way the compressor operates.

      It has a unique sound for sure.
      Humidity and temperature are both kept very consistent with this thing so far. Reliability is the obvious question mark but I decided to YOLO and take my chances at least once. I hope it serves me as well as my previous LG did.

    • @Smurdle450
      @Smurdle450  3 года назад

      Inverter window units here are very uncommon, only a few brands have them.
      Ductless splits are pretty much all inverter, but ducted units are mostly non inverter with the exception of the top-of-the-line models.

    Our next door neighbor is weird. She leaves her window unit on all year, even in the winter. In fact, I remember before she had the window unit, it was 20 degrees outside on a Sunday morning and she had her windows open.

    Hi! I know I'm about a year late from when you originally posted this video, but I was wondering how the heat dispersion is on this unit? I too have an ac unit "installed" in this manner due to apartment limitations. I'm replacing my old AC, and was just curious, as this LG unit seems to only have side vents. My current AC unit also has a vent on top to dispense heat. Please and thank you.

    • @Smurdle450
      @Smurdle450  2 года назад +1

      First of all, I applaud you for doing something as bold and stupid as this. It still works better than a portable!
      Heat is rejected entirely out of the back end of the unit, with the vents on the sides being used purely for intake (pulling air out of your room, across the coils, and blowing it outside.). This is likely the case with your current unit as well. The unit hasn't had any trouble dispersing heat. I mean, if you think about it, even if it were outside it would still only have those vents to pull in air. They're also quite large, so it's got a lot of area to move air through.
      The sides and top almost never get warm. This unit is well designed and is capable of running just fine with this not-ideal configuration.
      I do recommend going with this larger 14K model if you can, because it's capable of running to a lower capacity than the smaller 9500 BTU model, counterintuitively.
      Be warned, however. If you have some janky setup holding the unit up, get some additional reinforcements as these units are big and EXTREMELY heavy.

      @@Smurdle450 Haha desperate times call for desperate measures. I've hollowed out at kitchen shelf to hold up my current ac unit to the window's height, and placed a container underneath the ac to catch any and all moister. It's pretty jank, but it has worked thus far for my frigidaire 12k btu unit. Here in LA, it can get hot, especially living on the top portion of an apartment complex. In my room, there is a lot of heat coming from my pc & tv; need help to cool it all down. Thanks for the quick reply and for the insight and advice! I'm going to my nearest Home Depot tomorrow to get the 14k btu model. Thanks again, and great content! 👍

      @@O00InKs000 one more thing you should be aware of. If high pitched whining is something that bothers you a lot, an inverter unit like this is not for you. Due to the improper installation the whine from the inverter is very clear and noticeable.
      In these videos you can hear exactly what I'm talking about.
      The 1 year update video (past the 50 second mark) and maintaining 73 videos both give a good idea of actual noise without me being so close.
      If you can handle what you're hearing on camera, you can handle the unit itself. I will say that it doesn't bother me at all. I sleep in this room while it's running all the time.

    • @O00InKs000
      @O00InKs000 2 года назад

      @@Smurdle450 Definitely good to know. I, personally, welcome the background noise; I'm so used to having background noise. ^.^ Although, I generally keep the fans at low; how does the whining noise fare when at low, if I may ask?

    • @Smurdle450
      @Smurdle450  2 года назад

      @@O00InKs000 the whining itself is consistent at all fan speeds, all the way from sleep to max fan.
      While the whining is consistent, the compressor itself does make a decent amount of noise on low. At 50hz (the maximum speed the compressor will run at on low fan), the compressor has a powerful, and fairly loud hum to it.
      This can be heard towards the middle of the 1 year update video, but is better described in person. Hilariously, the camera makes it sound quieter than it really is.
      In my opinion it's a very pleasant sound, as it sounds like it's getting work done. If it turns out to be too loud for you, just up the fan speed to F2, which will allow the compressor to run slightly higher, and ironically quieter.
      At F3, the compressor is allowed to go to maximum speed.

  • @petermaz701
    @petermaz701 3 года назад +1

    Wow it’s cool sounding (get it). It’s different sounding from the conventional units. So I guess as it reaches the temperature of the room it slows down the compressor so instead of on and off it could just slow down I guess.

    • @Smurdle450
      @Smurdle450  3 года назад +1

      Badum-tsss!!
      That is precisely what it does. as it approaches temperature The compressor will spin down lower and lower until it's barely kicking out cool air, and it helps keep the temp very consistent.
      Reliability is the major question mark but since LG has been doing this inverter stuff in their mini splits for a while I'm hoping they have the formula pretty locked down.

      @@petermaz701 fully installed is going to be difficult to be honest, This unit will most likely remain in this suboptimal configuration for a while, if not indefinitely due to window limitations.
      Hell, my old unit ran for 6 years like this.
      Also worth noting, after running some tests with that old window unit versus a portable of the same size, I determined that even when improperly installed, the window unit still works better and uses less energy than a properly installed portable, so I went with another window unit.

      @@Smurdle450 definitely I’ve experimented with portable units in the past and even with 14,000 Btu’s a portable unit is only giving you between six and eight The hose really compromises the efficiency the way yours is set up now you’re pulling in a lot of air from inside the room but it’s still getting job done and giving you more than what a portable will.

    • @Smurdle450
      @Smurdle450  3 года назад +1

      I think that hose heating up has more of an effect than I thought it did, because at least with this window unit there's no hot hose. Sure, I'm still sucking a lot of air out but the lack of hose seems to help, and the 10,000 BTU portable used 1200 watts, while the old window unit used 700. Both 10000 BTU, and that's not to mention that the window unit ran circles around the portable in terms of performance.
      I'm yet to hook the watt meter up to this new unit, I'm very curious to do so, especially when this thing's at its lower speeds.

    Not gonna lie, I’m not liking that start-up sound, that high pitch noise does not fit well with me, personally. I’m sure it does the job, but that’s definitely a deal breaker for me.

    • @Smurdle450
      @Smurdle450  3 года назад

      Completely fair point. The high pitch sound is definitely noticeable, especially given the fact that this unit isn't properly installed.
      If it were properly installed, the high pitch whine would be barely noticeable if not inaudible. Unfortunately, I don't have that luxury, so I have to deal with the high pitch noise. Thankfully it doesn't drive me crazy, and the video does slightly exaggerate how bad it actually is.

      Ah, good point, I didn’t think of it had to do with the installation or not, but that makes total sense. I’m sure it’s one of the noises that you probably get used to after a while though, so that’s good I suppose
