I don't know much about AC units so please excuse my ignorance. How do you know it's doing a defrost cycle? When does it do this? What happens if your turn the machine off in the middle of the cycle? Does the cycle automatically start in the middle of the AC blowing when the machine detects it needs to do the defrost and then, when the defrost is over, it'll automatically go back to AC mode? Other then when I need to cool my place which is a few hours a day, I have the machine completely off so I want to make sure I'm not preventing the machine from doing this cycle when/if it needs to. Also, when it does this cycle, do you have to quickly go get a drain tube like you did in this video? What if you don't hear it start the defrost cycle, will you then get water all over the floor? Sorry for all the questions but if there's some hidden/automatic mode this machine is required to sometimes do, users need to know about it.
First of all, this cycle only occurs on heat pumps, and it only occurs when you're using the heating function. In the manual it states that you must have a drain hose connected when it's in heat mode, and this is why. In cooling mode, or on any portable unit without heat, you will never have to worry about this. These particular "duo" inverter units self-drain in cooling mode by sending moist air out of the air exhaust hose, and therefore out of the house. You would only need to manually drain the unit if you live in an extremely humid environment, and the unit will throw a error code to let you know if it gets that bad. That probably answered the question, but here's more info. In heating mode, the defrost cycle occurs automatically when it detects that the condenser coils are freezing up, which hinders heating performance. Typically, I find it happens every 50 minutes or so. You know it's defrosting when you hear a loud "hiss" as heard at 0:22, all fans shut down, and the compressor runs on its own. It goes in and out on its own, with no input required from the user. If you were to turn the unit off in the middle of a defrost, it will interrupt the cycle, but that's not a big deal. The coils will melt on their own, the defrost cycle just accelerates the process to maximize heating performance. I leave that bowl there whenever I have it running in heat mode, and usually it can hold enough water to handle two defrost cycles before I have to empty it. Yes, it very well could spill water over the floor if I'm not paying attention, But I'm almost always occupying the space it's heating while it's on.
I was gonna get a portable heat pump just like this but it was made by Cooper and Hunter. Apparently it has this anti frost thing so it doesn't have to defrost. In short terms the unit won't run under 40 degrees weather. So I'll be spending an extra 140 bucks for a defrost lol
Awesome, I love defrost cycle. I used to own a dual hose honeywell that have defrost cycle as well. But that one use a regular compressor. I have a video in my channel in the defrost cycle.
Did you modify it to get it to do this or punch a code in on the remote?(gree mini splits can do a force defrost) Or is this completely automated from factory?

So how cold was the outside temperature when the defrost starts kicking in? Costco has the unit on sale for $449 and I want to buy this unit for winter time instead of using the resistive heater. Thanks!
Defrost will occur regardless of temperature. It can occur at any point as long as the coils freeze up enough to trigger one. However, the unit will always stop operating when it gets below freezing outside, with no way to override.
@@Smurdle450you can kinda override it by moving the temp sensor in the hose out of the way and taping it over. It’ll keep running below 40f for a bit! Doesn’t really work once you get at or below freezing.
Great video do you happen to know what’s actually happening at 6:26 when the unit switches to heat? Mine did this and it worried me at first. Its sounds sudden and unpleasant.
That's the reversing valve, well, reversing the refrigerant flow. Because the refrigerant is still under pressure when it switches over, you get a very pronounced whoosh sound.
@@Rezzicorteza05I'll try to remember next time I'm up there. If I remember correctly it pushes out 90-110°F in heat mode depending on conditions, and 40-55°F in cool mode.

I have one just like yours that is hot and cold, but it doesn't do that or defrost it just stops working when the temperature is below 30 f
This unit does the same. However, despite that, the coils do still freeze, and a defrost can (and does) occur.

can you test the temperature from the fan?
No, you cannot set the temperature when it's in fan only mode. However it does have an auto setting which seems to turn the fan up the hotter it gets.
