Nice substantive and authoritative review. Thank you. Probably the next board I'll get. Had a Roland FP-1 for many years and it was nice - bought it new a thousand years ago. The piano sound sucked but the keyboard felt good and it had a nice warm, idiosyncratically expressive electric piano sound (which was OK for some rock), and it worked well as a midi controller. I used to be the same but now I really love it when a piano also provides a nice Rhodes Mark 1 or Hammond B3. You don't have to hook up your speakers, you have the full 88 keys and a nice action. These often get used in religious settings so there it especially makes sense to include some classic instruments.
Yes, but not everyone can afford a different instrument for every sound they might want to play, or use. And for a live band, that quick sound switch on one keyboard is a brilliant facility!

Hi Elizabeth! It would depend on whether you needed it to be portable. If so, I like the FP90 (Roland), or ES8 (Kawai) for portable upgrades. For more permanent options, the budget range greatly expands, so it's harder to nail down what the right model might be. But a few that come to mind that deliver extremely good value at a few different price ranges are: Kawai CA48, CA78 / Novus 5. Roland DP603 is another that delivers high value for the money IMHO. i, i am a 28 to (yeah, a bit late) piano beginner practicing with a touch sensitive 200€ yamaha keyboard but i'd really like upgrading to a weighted 88keys digital piano without spending too much. do you think fp10 is fine or should i invest 150€ more for fp30? i won't probably do another upgrade for a long period
Hey there, I hope this isn't too late - to me, there is no point in upgrading to the FP30 instead of the FP10 if your main reason is action. THey both use the PHA-4 action, and they have the same sensor as well. There is DEFINITELY a tonal difference, and I'm not even just talking about the increased speakers...even through headphones the FP30 is a richer sound - but action is the same. If you were looking for a meaningful upgrade in action/touch, I'd say you should look at the Kawai KDP110 that's in the same price range as the FP30. Other than that, you'd have to up the budget to about $2000 before you started seeing meaningful improvements in action from any of the major brands. Hope this helps, and good luck with the piano lessons! - Stu

Hi! Good day! I was about to purchase Roland FP 10 but when I am about to connect it to my macbook, it doesn't recognize the FP 10 as a midi controller/instrument for my Digital Audio Workstation (Garageband). It is supposed to automatically recognize the instrument like any other midi keyboards unless Roland FP 10 does not support Midi functions for DAW? Can anyone help? Thank you so much!
I think you may need to do some additional configuration to accept MIDI over bluetooth: support.apple.com/guide/audio-midi-setup/set-up-bluetooth-midi-devices-ams33f013765/mac
Hello! What will be more attractive, casio px-s1000 or roland fp-10? Alas, I could not appreciate the live sound of the instruments, I ordered fp-10 for myself, but later I found casio px-s1000, which was not very expensive in price with fp-10, but it seemed better to me, judging by its characteristics. Are these two tools very different? Already managed to get upset with my purchase :(
I've just bought it !! At 379 euros, it's certainly the best midi controller I can find out there with a better keybed than any competitor at this price range. Anyway, I'm also interested in the embedded sounds for sudden ideas, do we have the list of the original pianos that are inside or are they only pure creation ?
Congrats! The FP10 is a wonderful piano and one of the best values on the market because of its exceptional PHA4 action. The piano sounds onboard use a combination of recorded samples and some modelling enhancement. The sound is quite impressive! :)
@@pb25193 Yes, absolutely even if the connection to the bluetooth with the official application does not work for everybody. I think you can try with others unofficial applications. But I didn't bother to try. Otherwise the keybed is really good and I think it strongly influences my learning and my playing. And of course it has built-in speakers.
It has Bluetooth for Midi out or to connect the Piano Partner App. And yes also integrated speakers but from my point of view they are definitely a weakness.
I juts bought the fp10 to keep learning and practicing at home. I value sound and realistic feel. Have I made a good choice buying it? Thanks. Keep up the good work
Yes, absolutely great choice. Like I mention in the video, this action is basically one of the best piano actions on the market with the bare minimum build around it - it's a staggeringly good value for the money, especially when you take the action into account. I'd recommend doing most of the playing with headphones on, and with the volume at least at 50% though.
@@MerriamPianos thank you for your recommendation! It was supposed to arrive yesterday but I am going to have to wait till Monday. Anyway, excited to see how it feels. Thanks again. Keep up the good work!
@@MerriamPianos hey I have a question please! I finally got the fp10, it feels great when it comes to the action but I am kinda disappointed when it comes to the sound with headphones! It is not loud at all! I set it at the maximum level and it's not loud at all! Is that normal? Thanks
Nestor Cava Hey! I just received the FP10 this week and I found you need to change the “Key Touch” which by default is set to ‘Medium’ which lowers the volume if you hit the keys lightly. I’m a very beginner player so I set my key touch to ‘Super Light’ which produces higher volume. There is a PDF Manual for the FP10 online that explains all these features- I’d recommend checking it out. You can change many of the volume, ambience, brilliance, etc. features directly through the piano (need PDF manual to know which keys to press) or through the ‘Piano Partner 2’ free app which makes it much easier and connects to your piano via Bluetooth. Good luck!
@@slavatoth6617 hey thanks for your comment. Yeah I did find out about that messing around with the app. I don't personally really like the sound and the touch of the piano at it's lightest, I ended up buying a headphones amplifier and that solved the problem for me. Now I really enjoy playing it. Thanks anyway! Enjoy your fp10!
hi,i would like if is possible to connect the piano to a pc daw software in order to play the piano and playing simultaneously a backing track on the pc
I recently purchased one of these. Two queries. I’ve a pretty good ear but I hear no difference in the piano (ie first 4) sounds. Could I have a dud? Second, I want to connect it to Roland Sound Canvas SC-88 but they have incompatible connections. Any ideas?
Alistair Stewart I recently just bought the FP10 and I also couldn’t tell the difference between the 4 Grand Piano sounds, but that could be because I’m a very beginner player. I watched another review where the guy pointed out the different sound qualities between the 4 Grand’s.
Could you comment on the selection of electric pianos? Both the official list, and all other reviews show two electric piano sounds. While you played 5 different electric pianos. Are more sounds accessible throught the app?
By and large, yes. The overall dimension of the keyboard area is the same as on an acoustic piano. There are VERY small differences even between some acoustic pianos in terms of how deep the black keys are, how deep the white keys go, and slight differences in the gaps and widths, but these differences are less than 1mm in almost all cases. So yes, the FP10 will have a keyboard that matches the conventional dimensions of an average grand piano. - Stu
I'm realising everyone is picking on how small the sound system is at only 6watts BRO I REALISED MY CURRENT ONE IS 2.5W and my neighbours complain sometimes about how damn loud it is XD what will they say when I buy this one
Bundling a cool digital piano with a poorly made pedal is just a sign of poor taste and marketing trickery. I haven't found a single review video of this piano where people are not complaining about how bad the pedal is. Pretty sure that the people at Roland also know that. So all that is left is to say this is just a trick from Roland to make you spend more money. My only problem is that they are not upfront about it, that's all.
I think the goal of the FP10 package is to keep the price point as affordable as possible. It really is a special musical offering when you consider that the same action is being used within Roland pianos that are four times the value of the FP10. With that said, jumping to the DP10 pedal is a meaningful upgrade, especially to experienced players. :)
Sadly, nope. Bluetooth Audio has an inherent delay to it, and so real-time applications don't fare very well. Unfortunately it's all wired headphones in the piano world for the time being :( -stu
In response to your comment (@ ca. 8:35) that you don't know why there's a harpsichord sound on this (or any?) digital piano) I say this. Some pianists would like to play Baroque-era keyboard music on an instrument that produces the timbre of a harpsichord without having to purchase an expensive dedicated instrument and to find space in a home or church or performance hall for that instrument. Btw, the music you dashed off while demoing the harpsichord sound reveals a lot about what was behind your comment: it doesn't seem that you know any music appropriate to that particular instrumental color-and what you played did, at least to me, sound ludicrous. I myself wouldn't use the organ or electric piano sounds (They'd be inappropriate for the music I play.), but I wouldn't question their inclusion in the timbral choices because I know others would want them because of the music they play. So instead of scoffing at sounds for music you either don't know or don't like, why not acknowledge that Roland has designed an instrument that is versatile enough to meet the needs of all kinds of music & musicians? That, I think, is a better selling point than mocking music & musicians that happen to have different tastes than you do. (Fwiw, I'm not dissing your tastes; I'm merely criticizing your sales tactics.)
Hi thorn324. Seems I struck a nerve with that jab at the harpsichord sound! You do make a perfectly valid point. Roland (along with virtually all other manufacturers) must keep loading the machines with instrument patches appropriate for less main-stream contexts because users are actually requesting and using them. My musical orbit has literally never crossed a harpsichordist, or at least someone who would be an enthusiast of Renaissance keyboard music, so I never really considered that being dismissive of it (even it if was in a light-hearted spirit) might be offending somewhere out in the musical universe. I'll make you a pledge: if I'm going to talk about harpsichord in ANY context, I'll brush up on both something reasonable to demo on it, and recognize that there is an audience out there. Thanks for the candid feedback, its always good to connect with a different perspective. - Stu
@@MerriamPianos Stu, I appreciate your thoughtful & openminded reply. Btw, if it does happen that (for whatever reason) you play and/or talk about harpsichord music, I recommend starting a bit later than the Renaissance for the best of the instrument's repertory: in other words, look to the Baroque Era (J. S. Bach, Handel, and Domenico Scarlatti are the standouts for solo music) and the earlier part of the Classical Era (Haydn, whose earlier "piano" sonatas were written for & played on the harpsichord; early Mozart; and even early Beethoven, though mostly for his music using continuo-i.e., "back-up keyboard" functions-rather than solo keyboard music). Good wishes to you.
I think Stu was in no way dismissive - and, as a superlative keyboard player, should not be criticised for playing "inappropriate" music for the sound. I mean, really! Seriously? He doubtless, quite reasonably, didn't feel it necessary to play all of its sounds at great length to waste our precious time - but rather just quickly demonstrate that this keyboard has a range of alternative tones, if you want to take advantage of them. Simply that. I think your comment is snobbish, misjudged, and yes, inappropriate!
The electric piano is very disappointing. After like 40 years of being able to perfect the Rhodes, they can’t be bothered. Ive owned a Rhodes but I’m too old now to care.
I've had 5 of these. All had loud clicking issues. Roland said it was a defect. But they couldn't repair it. So their explanation changed to it being something you should expect from this instrument. I'll never ever buy anything Roland again.
Cracked me up when you reduced the volume on ALL the channels to demonstrate how soft it plays. Come on, if your going to do a con job on us, at least do the con job correctly. You should have lowered the volume on the piano track and left the microphone track the same level. Maybe it's time for you to invest in a sound interface with two or more inputs. LOL!
Well howdy there, MusikOne! I'm pretty sure I found the spot you're referring to at 3:47, and yep, there's a volume 'up' thats happening there. You'll just have to take my word here, this had ZERO intent behind it, and trust me there are no evil plans to sell FP10's by fiddling with volumes in a RUclips Video. But, if you're looking for an update and a technically glitch-free review on this, check out the update to this review here: ruclips.net/video/rVmkB79CHvI/видео.html . i, i am a 28 to (yeah, a bit late) piano beginner practicing with a touch sensitive 200€ yamaha keyboard but i'd really like upgrading to a weighted 88keys digital piano without spending too much. do you think fp10 is fine or should i invest 150€ more for fp30? i won't probably do another upgrade for a long period
- Stu
@@MerriamPianos thank you for your reply. i purchased the fp10 about 2 weeks ago and so far i'm very satisfied. speakers maybe are the only weak point of this digital piano (strangely built-in songs volume is much higher than the actual volume while playing it), max volume is not so high and sound is not crystal clear but still ok. maybe in future i'll buy an external monitor or i'll try to use some vst. i love the action and as you said i don't need the extrea features of fp30.
Can I play additional instrument voices using Bluetooth or midi or usb from piano's internal speakers??
Yes, the blue tooth will connect to the piano partner 2 app and have access to the entire database of sounds and songs which will be heard through the keyboard's speakers
Can it connect to speakers via Bluetooth?
No, you cannot transmit the audio from the FP10 to Bluetooth speakers.
I am looking for and upgrade from my super cheap RockJam rj561 which is kind of garbage been playing for 2 years. I would consider my self low intermediate I really want 3 pedals so I was going to go with the Korg B2SP cause I want a nice stand to and the loud speakers. However based off your review the key action seems much better but I don’t know if a person who has only played on a $70 keyboard would even notice. ( I can play the entertainer If that shows my skill level) Please leave suggestions
Steuw Harrison you ar great pianist ❤
I'll be sure to pass on that compliment to Stu on your behalf! :)
Hi!
I think you may need to do some additional configuration to accept MIDI over bluetooth: support.apple.com/guide/audio-midi-setup/set-up-bluetooth-midi-devices-ams33f013765/mac
can you plug this into an amp via the headphone jack
Yup! You certainly can. :)
Already managed to get upset with my purchase :(
please recommend me a good quality headphones for FP10
Are they still being sold?? it seems like there's none to buy anywhere.
the action is very good compared to most stage piano. Just the keys are a bit too short if you have long fingers it might be not so comfortable
Does it have Bluetooth? Does it have in built speakers?
@@pb25193 Yes, absolutely even if the connection to the bluetooth with the official application does not work for everybody. I think you can try with others unofficial applications. But I didn't bother to try. Otherwise the keybed is really good and I think it strongly influences my learning and my playing. And of course it has built-in speakers.
It has Bluetooth for Midi out or to connect the Piano Partner App. And yes also integrated speakers but from my point of view they are definitely a weakness.
iPadで見ているのはローランドのアプリですか?
Yes - I believe that was the Roland Piano Designer app on the screen at the beginning of the video. :)
How and what is the best way to record the FP10 other than using Piano Partner app?
You'll need an A to B USB cable to connect it to your pc, and then you'll need some recording software
Thanks

Hey!
Do you ship to uae ?
Yes we do!
hi,i would like if is possible to connect the piano to a pc daw software in order to play the piano and playing simultaneously a backing track on the pc
yes it is
What's the title of the theme music in intro?
I recently purchased one of these. Two queries. I’ve a pretty good ear but I hear no difference in the piano (ie first 4) sounds. Could I have a dud? Second, I want to connect it to Roland Sound Canvas SC-88 but they have incompatible connections. Any ideas?
Alistair Stewart I recently just bought the FP10 and I also couldn’t tell the difference between the 4 Grand Piano sounds, but that could be because I’m a very beginner player. I watched another review where the guy pointed out the different sound qualities between the 4 Grand’s.
Slava Toth Hi Slava. Where do you live?
How did you enable the ragtime sound in this model?
Is the 96 poliphony enough?
Quick question can it connect to a Bluetooth speaker?
Unfortunately that's a 'no'..Bluetooth on this is strictly MIDI.
I have the fp10 its fuckin sick
How is it doing 1 year later?
@@vj6164 its fuckin sick
Could you comment on the selection of electric pianos?
Both the official list, and all other reviews show two electric piano sounds. While you played 5 different electric pianos.
Are more sounds accessible throught the app?
Yes, with the app 35 tones are available, like the FP-30
does it work with android ?
Which one better for beginner?
Roland fp10 or Casio cdp s100?
🎹 Roland FP-10
What is the name of the app??
Piano partner 2
Who knew Edward Norton was such a great piano player?
He's a man of many talents. ;)
why did you not deme all the sounds / voices it has ?
I think there are a few hundred
Are the keys in the fp10 identical in size compared to a grand piano?
By and large, yes. The overall dimension of the keyboard area is the same as on an acoustic piano. There are VERY small differences even between some acoustic pianos in terms of how deep the black keys are, how deep the white keys go, and slight differences in the gaps and widths, but these differences are less than 1mm in almost all cases. So yes, the FP10 will have a keyboard that matches the conventional dimensions of an average grand piano. - Stu
@@MerriamPianos wow thanks definitely getting the fp10
Can you connect to Cubase on a pc?
Any reports of noisy / clicky keys on this piano? Seems to be alot of that online, was thinking of this instead of an FP-30
I have had 5 FP10s. Five. All were clicking terribly. Don't buy it. Unbelievably disappointing.
@@Pe6ek Wow; I actually just got an FP-30; was back and forth between the two, maybe I made the right choice. . .
12:05 sound of key without sound
I'm realising everyone is picking on how small the sound system is at only 6watts BRO I REALISED MY CURRENT ONE IS 2.5W and my neighbours complain sometimes about how damn loud it is XD what will they say when I buy this one
Wattage is often overrated...
It's all about having headroom to spare. You don't have to play at max level!
Can it connect to bluetooth headphones?
Sadly, nope. Bluetooth Audio has an inherent delay to it, and so real-time applications don't fare very well. Unfortunately it's all wired headphones in the piano world for the time being :( -stu
How to add reverb?
If theres no feature on the piano itself you're going to need pedals.
The clicky keys are very off putting which is a shame
I have had 5 FP10s. Five. All were clicking terribly. Don't buy it. Unbelievably disappointing.
Helps if you can play as good as that, lol
Stu's talent certainly helps bring virtually any instrument to life - that is for sure! :)
I hope you'll give me a second chance here to redeem ourselves, sans volume crime :) -Stu
