    Introduction:
Welcome to the only FP10 Review you’ll ever need: honest, to the point, balanced, from someone who plays them professionally. Stu Harrison at Merriam Pianos guides you through every aspect of the FP10, from its action and sound, to its features and connectivity options.
Please be sure to check out our full reviews of Roland FP digital pianos, as well as our playing videos of the FP10 as well, where you’ll just get to hear the instrument played straight out of its headphone ports with no effects of any kind.
    Action:
The Roland FP10 features their PHA-4 Ivory-touch action with escapement, which is a pro-level action found in instruments all the way up to (and above) the $2000 price point. This makes the FP10 an absolutely incredible value for people seeking a highly portable piano where feel and overall weight are at the top of the priority list. This instrument is essentially a basic keyboard built around a stellar feel, for under $750, which is simply incredible given what that amount of money got you just 5 years ago from digital piano manufacturers.
The PHA-4 is the exact same action that you’ll find in the FP30 and FP60, but also the F140r and the RP501r. It has a very well executed ‘faux’ ivory keytop feel and ebony feel on the black keys, a believable escapement simulation, and a rugged physical construction that doesn’t give off unreasonable mechanical sounds or ‘clunks’.
Were the action driving a more sophisticated tone engine, the lack of the triple sensor might be limiting. However, there isn’t a weak link here that might make any limiting factor stand out unduly, so everything remains quite satisfying, even from a professional perspective.
    Tone:
The FP10 does include a slightly limited version of the Supernatural Sound Engine, and slightly lower polyphony than the FP30 has, but it really has no noticeable affect on the playing experience - which might be a combination of lowered expectations and the fact that you wouldn’t be tackling complex classical works on the FP10 anyways (or not likely, anyways).
The piano tone, Rhodes, and all the other standard sounds are well rendered, and particularly with a good set of headphones, the piano is altogether fully usable as a PIANO, not some inexpensive substitute for one.
    Other Features:
The Bluetooth connectivity is another impressive inclusion for the price range. The stock sustain pedal leaves something to be desired, but a quick upgrade to the DP-10 is well worth it, and solves one of the only true annoyances of the model. The optional stand increases its aesthetic appeal if it were to live in a living room, although for the sake of stability, a double X stand or Z stand might do just as well.
    Conclusions:
Dollar for dollar, the FP10 cannot be beat in the marketplace right now for delivering the best touch. It’s a lightweight beast that will surprise experienced players, and gives new learners an excellent experience at a price that previously only offered up keyboards and very poorly-made digital pianos.

In my experience, the FP10 speakers face downwards and can sound distant. The standard piano sounds also sound a little thin. Luckily, both these issues are easy to fix. The piano sound complexity improves considerably by layering presets 1&2 or 1&4 to play together. The ambient sound can be improved by connecting stereo tweeters to the headphone jack while the main speakers are also enabled. (Setting and saving the audio settings are outlined in the online manual.)

Great review, and love the split jazzy piano/bass stuff you demonstrate here. I have an FP10, and it's wonderful - for keyboard touch (no clicks on mine), and I think the unamplified sound is pretty authentic too, and quite loud enough in a room - though the onboard speakers can't deliver those bottom and top notes too well. But overall, I'd recommend this highly - a digital piano so much better, and more versatile than I could have hoped for!

So happy with mine - incredible action (I can play it all night) and a lovely selection of piano sounds (all good). And the new Roland Piano App (2023) is really fantastic and makes using the instrument a pleasure, although, personally, I love the 'keyboard' shortcuts (to transpose - function and 2/3/4/5 presses on the appropriate key to transpose up or down - so simple - compared with a 'traditional' keyboard where you have to go into a 'menu', then find 'transpose', and only THEN press buttons up or down to do the transposing).

Lately I've been spending hours and hours researching the best piano action midi controller I could get without breaking the bank, have watched hundreds of YT reviews and read about a million Amazon reviews 😜
What I've found it seems I have to spend upwards of $1k for a dedicated midi controller to get a keybed as nice as this. I don't need faders, knobs and DAW transport controls...
This video and your comments about the action sealed the deal for me, have one coming in a day or two. And it definitely a nice bonus with the sounds and speakers for when I just want to practice, win-win!

Thanks for tuning in! We're very glad to hear that the video was helpful in your decision making process. I agree that you would be hard-pressed to find a better piano action in this price category. That is one of the things that makes the Roland FP10 an attractive options as a MIDI controller as well (especially if you do not require the extra DAW transport controls as you've stated). Thanks again and enjoy your FP10 when it arrives! :)

Hello Stu, first of all thank you for your reviews. I'm going through that fase, the very first one where I'm gathering info before ordering my very first digital piano and very much due to your reviews and back to back comparisons I've decided to go with the FP-10. So this morning I've placed the order but, because there's a world full of people out there who seemingly had the same idea, the FP-10 is estimated to take a couple of weeks to arrive. In the meantime I went on reading about it in forums and....a Pandora's box has been opened! Apparently there's a bunch of people out there sitting at home with new, semi new and old digital pianos ("funny" enough, a lot of FP-10's among them) with keys that make clicking/clunking noises all over the place. Is this something I should expect to happen in a near future right after receiving my new piano? Should I be scared here? Appreciate your thoughts on this please. Cheers from the Netherlands

This is so incredibly good for its price. The option from Yamaha and Casio at this price range cant keep up with it in terms of key action.
Personally I own a Yamaha P515, and it is better, bit also 4 times the price. For a friend who is a beginner I now made sure we got him an FP 10 as his first proper Digital piano. Key action is all that matters in my world and while the built in speakers are meh, the sound you get in your headphones from the FP10 is honestly almost too good for this price range. Legendary Roland sound engine at work here. I kinda want one as my second piano now

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Год назад +9

I certainly agree with the sentiment! The Roland FP10 offers incredible value! I tend to prioritize key action as well when choosing a digital piano, so, from that perspective, it is hard to compete with the FP10 and its PHA4 action. :)

I got the FP-10 after comparing to the PX160. The Casio is great and has more features... BUT... in my opinion, the piano is tinny and decays way too quickly. Plus, the action gets clickety-clackety (by this I mean loud... Google to see people's complaints) If you're using this instrument as a piano primarily, I can't recommend the FP-10 enough.

My FP 10 arrived today. My first impression is that the sounds of the pianos are mildly disappointing: ok-ish for a secondary keyboard, but they do not have the clarity of an acoustic piano. Of the four piano sounds, I think I prefer the fourth one. I liked the harpsichord though. The action is pretty good, if a little heavy.
The standard pedal is not so great. Roland^s SP 10 pedal (more that twice the price of alternative sustain pedals) is supposed to give half pedal functionality, but I understand that the FP 10 only supports a literal 50% pedal effect rather than a graded response. At some point I shall want a better pedal so would be interested in what others have used.

Hi! Brent here! I'm sorry to hear you were a bit disappointed with the FP10's piano sound. While the speakers aren't particularly powerful, I have found the headphone experience and direct lineout sound to be quite impressive. You can always try running the piano through an amplifier to enhance the sonic experience. Also, the upgraded DP10 pedal is a very worthwhile investment for anyone that does a lot of nuanced pedal work. Thanks for sharing your insights and all the best!

@@MerriamPianos Thank you for your prompt reply and your suggestions. I am hoping to tweak and brighten up the sound a bit from the apps, once I have installed them. I doubt even the best electronic pianos can really mimic the acoustic experience. I did warm to the first harpsichord: I played a few of Bach's Goldberg variations and liked the sound it produced.
I expect I shall have to get the DP 10 pedal - I am doubtful there is an alternative.

    Roland FP10 or Kawai ES110?
FP30 is not an option since it costs a lot more than the FP10 here in the Philippines. FP10 and ES110 have the same price here.
Here, the FP10 and ES110 cost ₽35,000 and the FP30 costs ₽43,000 so the difference is around 157 USD.
One important factor for me is overall durability (hardware quality).
I know the ES110 has twice the max polyphony but I'm wondering if this is a big issue.
I'm not a piano pro and I'll be using the DP mostly for giving voice lessons.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  4 года назад

For voice lessons, if you had a stereo or an amplifier, I would say that it's down to your own preference of touch and tone. Both have great actions! But if you were hoping to use it on its own just with internal speakers, the ES110 is going to give you a bigger, deeper sound. I also personally find the ES110 piano tone to be a bit more authentic and warm.

I own a fp-10 and if you're talking about the recording in app, you connect your phone to your piano via app, create an account, and everything you do you can replay on the app, whether it's a key press etc. As soon as you press a key it records it and a few seconds later the audio is available. The recording isnt recorded via microphone, its recorded via what the app knows you pressed, so the sound quality is perfect and like if you were hearing it yourself for the first time, without any background noise as the app itself creates the sound based on what you played.

It sounds great in my opinion, isnt as portable as you might think It is (though it is definitely portable). Its just not like carry it around portable, I dont know if that matters but I'd just like to let you know that there is definitely some weight to it. The app while useful and it does include some songs, you cant add songs you want to learn and the ones on there are fairly complex for beginners, the app can train you to know your keys in note form , and spit out the sound of the key and you click on the note, also record your music through it, and change a lot of piano sounds and settings on there, but that's about it. Basically if you're looking for a piano, though this might be a bit expensive compared to the other cheaper options, it does pack a lot of things and I still do firmly believe that I picked the right piano two months ago.
