  • Beethoven's Sonata quasi una fantasia in C# minor - Adagio sostento, better known as the Moonlight Sonata.
    The audio is the Pianoteq "NY Steinway D Warm" preset, with a little extra on the reverb.
    I'm still practicing the new Rachmaninoff piece, so until that is ready this is a recording of a piece I first played when I was 15...I hope you like it.

    I think a few of the people commenting are thinking they are hearing the FP10 piano, you are not, it is the Pianoteq VST as stated above. There really is not a comparison between Roland "Concert Grand" sounds and a high quality VST like Pianoteq or Vienna Symphony Library. Roland has some nice action, I have the RS88, but for pianos I use VST's and some of the Roland piano sounds only in mixes. But alone I only use the Pianoteq, it is remarkably flexible and infinitely better in sound, expression and resonance.

    Wonderful performance; thanks a lot! I was going to ask what touch sensitivity you were using, but then found the answer in the comments of your videos: you use the "heavy" mode on your fp-10. I have been playing on my fp-10 for about a year now and am used to setting it to sensitivity as light as 20 (through the Roland app), which, yet, makes it feel still so heavy to me. Remember that your setting, "heavy," actually means sensitivity 70 on this keyboard! This blows my mind. I guess my technique is rather poor, since I am a beginner.

    • @DigitalPianoClassical
      @DigitalPianoClassical  2 года назад +2

      Thanks. As you say, I have my keyboard set to "heavy" . I feel that this gives me more control at the pp end of the scale, but the trade-off is that I have to hit the keys quite hard to get to FFF....! It does depend on your playing style, but whatever your setting is you should be able to easily generate a full range of volumes. If you are a beginner then bear in mind that you will be able to hit the keys harder as you gain confidence, so making it loud becomes less of an issue with practice...

    • @markanthony3736
      @markanthony3736 2 года назад

      Great, great playing! Thank you.
      I too wonder about sensitivity. My FP-10 comes preset to medium, and at that setting I can only produce a piano timbre (a "softness" resulting from a damping of high frequency overtones) no matter how hard I strike the key, so hard that I fear any harder would damage the mechanism (I am talking raising the whole arm and pounding). The ordinary "bright" timbre I could only produce at super light. Is this consistent with your experience? That is, are you accepting a certain artificial softness so as to have greater control at the piano (low velocity) end?
      This video sounds a bit soft in timbre to me, but that may just be the Pianoteq setting. I've also watched your Chopin nocturne with FP-10 internal sound. There the sound is nothing like what I would get from my machine. At heavy, it would sound as if a felt screen had fallen between hammer and string. Maybe there are differences between instances of FP-10 (Heidi N's being a worse case than mine perhaps).
      While I am at it, did you find a way to get your FP-10 to start heavy when turned on, or do you have to set it to heavy (from medium) every time it starts? Thanks very much.

    • @DigitalPianoClassical
      @DigitalPianoClassical  2 года назад +2

      I don't believe it matters what sound driver is used for the audio export, since it is purely a mathematical conversion. Since it is an offline conversion though it *can* sound slightly different to the "live" version which you hear via the sound driver when playing your midi recording. (I use an Asio4All sound driver FYI)
      My piano settings are mostly at their default position, but I always change the settings for "condition" down a notch or two, since I found this helps introduce a little random modulation into the output, as you would find on a real piano. Make sure your output is set to "sound recording", and maybe try increasing the reverb mix or decay time (though not too much) which can soften the output...hopefully in a pleasing way. It can be a but trial and error though, and I do often make several exports with different settings and listen to them at loud volume to find which one I like best.

    if you don't mind me asking, how long did it take to learn this piece? I learned piano in elementary school for 1 year and then played the simplified version of Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement when in college. And then now after many years i am learning this original version. I can't read the music sheet too well, so I am using MuseScore plugin to print the 1, 2, 3 as Do Rei Mi next to the notes. Every week I am learning two measures and now after 6 months, I am almost done, but there still need to be a lot of practicing... I am playing without looking at the notes

    • @DigitalPianoClassical

      Hi. I can't remember exactly, as I first learned this many years ago. I don't think it took too long to get the basics, but getting good control of both the speed/timing and the voicing took time. Memorising the notes helps let you concentrate on that, so that's a good start.

    • @eigenfield
      @eigenfield Год назад +2

      I can tell you, from a newbie's perspective that I learned this complete piece in 6 months by watching in youtube "The Piano Keys" tutorial. It was my first time going into music. The key to my accelerated learning was because I was using a portable "Korg microKey" which I can always carry around everywhere. So I ended up playing in the sala, at the beach, in the sofa. Very nice piano sound fonts are available in Android Bluetooth connected to the microKey. I don't know how to read musical notes. After some dropping by at music stores, I sat in an acoustic grand piano and to my surprise that 80% of what I learned from the microKey transferred to a standard piano. After about a year more of continuing playing with my portable microKey, I eventually decided to buy just last week a Roland FP-30X. So I realized that, it would be a waste to over-practice in a tiny Korg microKey and then suffer from play performance in a casual formal occasion that I can have my chance in a true grand piano with many people listening. After a week with FP-30X, I discovered some correction in fingering# use at the intro part. It was a tough choice between the Yamaha P-125 vs Roland FP-30X. During test at the music store, I connected smoothly with the P-125, I didn't dropped any notes. I had dropped notes when I first played on the FP-30X due to the heavy key action. Also, I am used to the piano sound of the Yamaha, because the FP-30X is a rare stock and just arrived recently at the store during several courses of my visits. From my experiences with Bluetooth MIDI, Android FluidSynth sound fonts + Korg microKey, I knew that the piano sound is just software but the key action is the feature that could not be given by any VST - I went for the FP-30X.

      @@eigenfielddamn man thanks for this comment, I'm actually at the same spot but don't have access to see them both in person in any local music store. I was also leaning towards the Ronald, and you convinced me that it's the right direction 😁 more realistic key action seems like the major difference here

    Can you share the sheet music of this version?

      Hi. I'm afraid I can't share it as it's a copyrighted version: ABRSM signature edition, Op27 no 2. There are free versions available to download online though, such as the one on free-score, which looks accurate to me. It is just missing some expression that is in my version (the crescendo and decrescendo in the final 8 bars etc).

      I can't say, as I've never compared them. But I highly recommend you watch Merriam Music's comparison of FP10/P125/PXS1000, since I believe the 1100 has the same action and sound, with only a few (useful) tech upgrades...Ultimately, it was the fact that FP10 uses the same key action as Roland's much more expensive keyboards that sold if for me...

      fp10 is more realistic, the way it feels.

    What Is pianotech??

      It is a piece of software running on my laptop, which creates the piano sound you can hear on this video, using the MIDI input from the FP10, which is plugged into the laptop via usb.

    Wow, Beethoven was a bad choice. The sound is decidedly digital, in a bad way.
    Not even close to a $100k Yamaha grand.

      Sure, but it's a fraction of the cost of a real piano, let alone a 100k grand, so hardly a fair comparison.

      @@DigitalPianoClassical I bet if he didn't saw the video he would have though that it's real piano playing
