Why the Embraer E2 is Failing in the US

  • The intricacies of the aviation industry are vast and ever-evolving, with manufacturers needing to strike a delicate balance between innovation, efficiency, and market demand. Embraer, once a heralded player in the regional aviation sector, now finds itself in challenging waters, grappling with the evolving demands of the market.
    The Embraer E2 series, despite its advanced technology and improvements, has struggled to carve out a niche in a fiercely competitive marketplace. While the aircraft touts superior specifications, factors like the U.S. scope clause and the shifting market dynamics, underscored by the rise of competitors like the Airbus A220, have hindered its ascent.
    Embraer's predicament with the E2 series is a cautionary tale in the aviation world. While innovation is critical, so too is ensuring a product-market fit. The stringent rules of the U.S. scope clause, which render the E175 E2 unsuitable for American regional carriers, underscore the importance of understanding and navigating market constraints.
    Additionally, Embraer's challenges are exacerbated by the broader industry trends. As airlines increasingly lean towards aircraft that offer both capacity and extended range, aircraft like the Airbus A220 have found favor, leaving the E2 in its wake.
    Embraer's potential alliance with Boeing was seen by many as a strategic move to counterbalance the challenges faced by the E2 series. Yet, this potential lifeline was pulled away when Boeing decided to withdraw from the agreement. While this partnership could have bolstered the E2's prospects, its termination has added to the headwinds Embraer faces.
    Nevertheless, the aviation industry is known for its resilience. While Embraer's current trajectory with the E2 series seems turbulent, there are potential strategies it could employ, from reconsidering its aircraft's design to meet market constraints to aggressive pricing models to entice customers.

    Why Embraer thrives anywhere in the world but in the US? Maybe because they create clause restrictions that affects only Brazilian airplanes… Or maybe they don’t like more efficient airplanes for regional connections… I mean, that sounds pretty much the dichotomous sight of US: They can only see threats or dominance opportunities.

      It doesn't only effect Brazilian planes, de fuck are you talking about? The question is why did Embraer not consider the scope classes when designing their jet. Answer, because they wanted to play with the big boys. Well, that what you get, now you are competing against Airbus. They simply designed the wrong product, nothing to do with much else.

    America is also facing a severe pilot shortage exasterbated by early retirments of older pilots during the pandemic. The airlines can’t staff a large fleet of smaller jets vs. a smaller fleet of larger jets. If the pilot situation improves, I could see the E2 picking up sales with US airlines wanting to fly thin-line routes. Right now, they are going to continue the hub-spoke model and until things improve.

      Yes, but i'm convinced the merger with Boeing will be on the table again. And then Embraer will be able to put press on the pilot unions to change the scope clauses. And maybe a re-engine as soon as the cfm leap becomes available for the A220 and maybe for the E2 too, would allow Embraer to push sales of the E2 family.

    know ur customer... they sell to us regionals were this weight restriction exists, not beeing aware about that is really incompetent
    maybe it was intentional, with low projected sales in the us for the next years due to the young fleet, they focused their attention on increasing sales outside of the us
    or they were sure that boeing thing will happen and than the scope claws might change quicker ^^
    similar to the cybertruck... back when he presented it first i could tell that this thing will never be allowed in europe. we ain´t got a truck market anyways especially these oversized overweight things , not sure about the rest of the world, but cant see it beeing allowed in most of asia either, japan, sk, taiwan even china or india... no way

    1:28 yeah, it's definitely stopping the show, and not in a good way - the GTF has proven itself to be the worst engine in service today. The E-Jet E2 is an awesome airframe - it's Achilles' Heel is its engines. If GE provided new-generation engines for the E2 based on their NG34 program, it would definitely have been more reliable, and most likely at least a bit more efficient, too - the PW1900G manages only an 11% fuel efficiency improvement over the CF34-10E at best, whereas the GE NG34 was designed for at least 15% fuel efficiency improvement over the CF34 in general. The reason that didn't happen is because, according to GE, they couldn't make a business case for supplying engines for the E2. As it turns out, considering that there are less than 300 orders for the E2, compared with over a thousand deliveries of the original E-Jet, GE might have estimated correctly, from a financial viewpoint. That being said, it would have been wonderful to have E2 jets with superior GE power. 4:22 it's superior engines 🤣🤣🤣 sure, they're superior in terms of fuel burn, and that's it - they're inferior in terms of dependability, durability, and reliability, which are more important than efficiency (though of course Embraer could have its cake and eat it too, if it had GE engines that would be both more efficient than the GTF and more reliable). These heavier and inferior engines, along with the additional material needed for the longer fuselage, effectively prevent the E175-E2 from ever getting any orders, which has turned out to be a good thing, because, again, those heavier engines also happen to have been causing lots of trouble, including in the larger E190-E2 aircraft - for instance, one need look no further than KLM, at least a third of their E190-E2 fleet was put out of service for a while in May because of engine trouble that simply does not ever happen with the good old reliable GE CF34. The GTF, far from having it's teething troubles sorted out, not only has continued experiencing trouble since its EIS, has gotten even worse, to the extent of causing a whole airline to cease operations because of engine problems. The GTF is so bad that once some technical issues have been resolved, more pop up, it's been a game of whack-a-mole for years, with no end anywhere near in sight. It would be an operational nightmare if the E175-E2 got into the market. The A220 is surely a beautiful aircraft with great economics, but it has some reliability issues, and would be much better if it had LEAP power.

    • @mikeschmit007
      @mikeschmit007 4 месяца назад

      You're totally right, but how probable do you think it is, the E2 could still get a re-engin with a new generation engine or a downsized version of the CFM Leap?

    • @rafaelwilks
      @rafaelwilks 4 месяца назад +1

      @@mikeschmit007 good question! Quite improbable, I'm afraid, at least anytime soon, if ever. Suppose Embraer were to indicate interest in GE bringing back the NG34 into a production engine for the E2, and suppose GE, for their part, were to agree to this: it would most likely take a while to get that done, and I hardly imagine either company would deem it financially worthwhile to pursue this (even though it would be awesome if they did). I suppose the reason GE couldn't make a business case for the NG34 powering the E2 was because, I read somewhere, the NG34, at the time of the engine selection for the E2, hadn't yet been test-run, while the GTF was in the process of being test-run, and Embraer understandably estimated that the GTF was the safer and less risky option. What a decision, considering how badly the GTF turned out!
