    I've been in unfortunate circumstances that made me use some. I'll say the eye poke was my favourite - instead of an interviewer stance, I start with both hands at shoulder height, palms open facing the other person, a universal "I'm not doing anything" or "I don't want anything" stance, and if they move forward you strike. The clean-up is perfect, as you are showing a posture of someone who does not want any trouble, great optics.

      @@seansnyder2855 I don't think I agree. I mean, sure, if you just leave it hanging out there, telegraph terribly, or you're a moron and try and kick them much above belly button. A roundhouse above the belt is VERY catchable, because it comes right under the arm, and catching it is a very natural motion. A front kick is not as catchable as people think, unless you know it's coming or have experience with them. That being said, I agree that having some wrestling/take-down defense is a lifesaver. Even if they don't catch it, it can catch on something or you can slip.

    Honestly surprised it wasnt mentioned until like half way through when Mike was throwing some elbows at the target, but just a quick upwards elbow into guard seems like a contender for anyone who is trying to invade your space. Even if you miss, worse case scenario is you are elbow blocking their hook.
    Also surprised nobody mentioned the classic swift kick to the south pole; besides predictability score being very weak, can't imagine the other categories would ever be worse than a 4/5.

    I've been involved in several "critical incidents" over the years due to my job, so I have some experience with this. Depending on the spacing, I usually go with the old reliable one-two followed by a calf kick. If they crash in, I'll use a headbutt, single collar tie with elbows and knees. And lastly, despite Icy Mike telling me they don't work, I like a good sidekick to the body to create distance, or directly to the knee to (possibly) remove the threat. Just my two cents. Great video, Sensei Seth! It's always awesome when you collaborate with Icy Mike because you two play so well off each other.

    • @prgnify
      @prgnify 5 месяцев назад +5

      I'd like to give an honourable mention to the front kick as well, not a teep, but using the heel or sole of your boot. I just like mentioning it because it is a bit easier than the ones you mentioned for an unskilled fighter to throw. But then of course, you need the other guy to have committed to something, otherwise they'll respond like Mike showed, and that would take some of the sting out of it. Still creates some distance though.

      Good take. Especially putting elbows and knees into the equation. It’s what I like best in Muay Thai.

    • @TheElbowMerchant
      @TheElbowMerchant 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@_Pauper_ Muay Thai is my primary background, so elbows and knees are my bread and butter. Round kicks are up there too, especially to the calf since they are harder to catch/check, particularly against people with minimal formal training. After joining an MMA gym, my punches/boxing improved too, so that's why I tend to start most engagements with the jab. And the front leg side kick I mentioned in my original comment is something I picked up along the way, but admittedly, that's probably the highest risk technique that I would try in a self-defense scenario. Most of the incidents I've been in (I work in corrections) have been against guys that are very effective street fighters, but also have minimal (or zero) training, so I tend to gravitate towards low risk/high reward techniques that my attacker is less likely to see coming. In my experience, their opening attack is (more often than not) going to be a big overhand punch or a full body tackle. I try to avoid the ground whenever possible because of the likelihood of multiple attackers joining the fray, but thankfully, I also have back-up coming to rescue my ass when things pop off most of the time.

    I think it is range dependent:
    Your assailant is already close (probably getting up in your face) - tie up their right hand with your left, throw right elbow.
    Your assailant is just outside punching range (probably walking towards you) - pull-counter type straight right into left hook.
    Your assailant is at significant range - just keep moving away (maybe run, or get in your car/house), unless you CAN’T for whatever reason (loved one in distress, home defense, assailant has a ranged weapon, etc), in which case you get closer and do one of the above.
    I think the most important factor is knockout possibility being as high as possible, and creating opportunity to follow up, because there is plenty of footage of people doing jabs/slaps/whatever and their pissed off assailant takes out a weapon - if it is to the point that you have to strike someone, don’t rely on pain compliance, force them to stop.

    i've always thought elbows are underrated for self-defense, particularly the uppercut elbow: it automatically covers the head, it's hard to jam and stifle, creates space the same way an uppercut does, has minimal telegraph, crashes through most conventional guards, easy to deal damage with and has minimal risk if you miss it.
    that being said, yeah, it's incredibly short-range - and while it's *easy* to deal damage with, it isn't a powerful strike as an absolute. i still see it as a very effective technique nonetheless.
    P.S. - if we're talking "special techniques for shorter fighters", i think the uppercut elbow is as close as it comes to those actually existing :^)
    it's a nasty little thing to throw if someone taller is trying to smother you in the clinch

    My take on eye pokes - it's effective, yes, but only if you are trained enought. Ease of use? Definetely 1. Of all the moves in the list, it is the most difficult to land. Amount of presicion you need to deliver two small fingers to two small targets is unbelievable, hard even if you are trained. Then we add factors - adrenaline makes you less accurate, while at the same time your reaction becomes quicker. In a dangerous situation untrained person will most likely either miss the eyes, or the other person flinches, making fingers land on forehead/cheekbones(hard surface=fingers ouchie). People miss jabs to the chin all the time, and it is much easier to land than eyepokes. And the move is not possible in couple of situations, like if your opponent have glasses.

    • @kevinmurphy5878
      @kevinmurphy5878 5 месяцев назад +1

      I think the way to do it is just flick an open hand with loose fingers at the general eye area. People do that in the UFC (illegally) all the time and it seems to work. You have multiple fingers that can land, if you hit a bone, the fingers are bent so they won't get jammed, and it doesn't take a ton of force to hurt an eye, plus it's relatively easy.

    • @zaharkinsnebolubov5722
      @zaharkinsnebolubov5722 5 месяцев назад

      I get your point, but your example is not suitable. People doing it in ufc (both trained proffecionals) is not what the video is about. 1) ufc fighters are accurate, 2) ufc fighters don't flinch when they are taking hits, especially if they thinks it's just a jab. We are talking about untrained people doing things. We see roundhouse kicks in ufc, but they are rated 1 in ease of use.
      Also, i get that there is a way to make it less painful for fingers, but it still is painful. Flinch your fingers lightly at the wall. It will hurt anyway.

    I have personally done eye damage to a guy in a barfight with an eye jab, and I have personally headbutted an attempted eye jab (same guy's friend). A successful eye jab wins the fight instantly, but a failed eye jab takes your hand out the fight - they work when people expect a punch (punches are generally slower because with an eye jab you just gotta be fast, no strong force necessary), but they don't work when somebody expects that particular move. To say they don't work in totality is to assume you are faster. Generally a good move for smaller guys that tend to be faster than bigger guys, plus smaller guys often have to be more lethal to stand a chance anyways - though having said that, in both my cases we were about the same size.
    @SenseiSeth please consider your reaction time versus jab speed.

    When I was a kid I had No training and was walking with my buddy and he didn’t tell me the older 4 dudes sitting at the picnic table were his bullies. All of a sudden someone I don’t know is on top of me hammering me with punches and I put my hands out to say I’m a victim and don’t know how to fight. Then the man up stairs placed my pinky in and behind his eye and he screamed and ran away. They thought I was a ninja master… I went home and played Mario brothers a champion…

    I like this whole circle of channels, Seth, Mike etc. Followed you guys for years. But it’s funny that before you guys used to diss krav maga and other ”self defense oriented” arts. Now, after you were in the tournament and tried that type of training I see you guys doing more and more similar things like in krav maga. Mike has even realised the value of eye pokes -> a reaction -> head control. It’s good because my experience as a compratively smaller guy vs the people I trained with is that vs a guy the size of Seth head control takedowns is the only really reliable grappling. Forget his body and twist his head into the ground. Grab head-> finger in eye gives a flinch and you just follow with the flinch and twist the head to off balance. It is very powerful from the clinch. It’s also great to deny takedowns, shooting and slams. Try it with Mike, you pick him up and try to slam him and everytime he grabs your head with both hands (back and front) and pushes his fingers into your eyes. See how many slams you get out of 10, I’m guessing 1.

    I think the side kick would be easier to get away with in a court case especially if you took some steps back to create distance from them. You also get to lean away from them when a push or punch you would normally need to lean in witch adds to the chance of a counter and would not look like you are trying to avoid the fight as much.

    Roundhouse kick takes quite a while to master, in order to have enough stopping power. Secondly, it is
    also pretty difficult to land flush without a setup, unless the other guy is completely clueless. And if it
    doesn't land flush, it will require further actions. And sometimes so even despite landing flush.
    A thai-style low kick would be a better choice, however - it also needs to land flush, to have a prompt
    punching follow-up or setup - or both; AND it has to hit with precision. If the altercation is unavoidable,
    the best fight response is a balls kick followed by a 1-2 (or more). With the correct eyes feint, - the kick
    to the balls launches invisibly, and a 1-2 lands like out of nowhere. After that, if the fight is still going,
    the distance is probably going to change, or you will have to adjust it your way, - if you find any other
    change not in your favor. My kickboxing/muai-thai friends would insist on switching the balls kick to
    a low kick... Nevertheless, however the fight is initiated, the first strike needs to have a follow-up, you
    can't put too much faith in just one move standalone. There is always a chance that the aggressor
    will weather the hit and still go on attacking. Gotta be prepared for this and preempt such scenarios
    the best you can.

    Did a similar thing with friends a few years ago we landed on "step on foot and push" *best* case, you commit to pinning the foot and can do a lot of damage, sprains or breaks. average case the other person stumbles or is on the ground, and worst case its just a riskier push.

    • @kevinmurphy5878

    I'm shocked that after all this time I still haven't seen sweep kicks getting covered by either of them. At least on paper it seems like the perfect opening move, relatively easy to learn, if it works your opponent's on the ground and you've bought time and worn them out some, low chance to be caught, and just like a ton of other positive aspects to it. It just seems like the perfect move for most anyone in a basic self defense scenario

    • @fireeaglefitnessmartialart935

      Not really easy. Attempted once in training and the arm post on torso reliably makes people back away, making the sweep miss. And theres no guarantee youre landing the sweep on a light foot. The thing seems high level imo. Or perhaps im too noob for that one idk

    I genuinely think hat toss is the single best thing on this list. Will it end a fight? No, but versatility is insane. No one knows what to do when you do it. Thow a kick afterward if you need to, but a lot of the time thats enough of a head start to entirely disengage with the situation. Its also a great thing to trip up your friend's when rough housing. Gotten a good few moves on a friend just because im two of ten that regularly wears a hat.

    I think you should consider starting position as well and social context. In my opinion rising your hands above your chest level is communicating "We are about to fight". This is very instinctual thing if someone comes close to you with their hands up, the person being approach instinctively feels threatened and usually raises their hands as well.
    I think Seth made a good point about the eye pokes. It is much less effective if you close your eyes. Professional fighter are trained to keep their eyes open when something approaches their faces and eyes pokes are strictly forbidden. When something approaches your yes the natural reaction is to close the eyes and turn the face. And anything moving towards your eyes is very easy to notice.

    Front kick or push kick would probably be better than the side kick ngl especially the roundhouse kick. The moment your leg goes in the air instinctively they'll go to try and block and just rush you. It's more telegraphed to. The street is different compared to the all valley tournament.

    Straight vertical punch as you need less room to throw it and they tend to get to the target faster.
    Straight blast or boxing blast.
    Chain punching and striking in general =hooks/elbows
    clinch
    body slams/suplexes will end fights almost immediately

    It's kind of a circumstantial subject really. How you react could depend on the amount of space you have. If the person is in your face trash talking or threatening a headbutt might be best. If you have some distance between you. A punch, kick, ect. Would be better. Awesome video, it's informative in many ways

    I would have gone with a simple front kick/teep over a roundhouse or side kick. If you are just talking to a person, most people stand squared up with another individual. Taking a sideways or staggered stance could be seen as taking an aggressive fighting stance by the law in some places.
