  • Dire Straits deliver an unforgettable performance of “Telegraph Road.” Mark Knopfler’s mesmerizing guitar work and the band’s soulful energy will leave you spellbound! 🤯
The Telegraph Road is a major north-south 70 mile thoroughfare in Michigan. Mark Knopfler was inspired to write this song while riding in the front of the tour bus, which made the journey down Telegraph Road. At the time, Knopfler was reading the novel The Growth Of the Soil by the Nobel Prize winning Norwegian author Knut Hamsun and he was inspired to put the 2 together and write a song about the beginning of the development along Telegraph Road and the changes over the ensuing decades. This was a metaphor for the development of America and the ruining of one man's dreams in the wake of its decline, in particular focusing on unemployment.
Hope you guys enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed it😊If you did please don't forget to smash that like 👍 & Subscribe 📺

I noticed a lot of trolls out there reacting when people say they haven't heard of Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler or a particular song. It's ridiculous. I'm 65, love Dire Straights. was around when these songs were released and I just heard Telegraph Road for the first time here. How did I miss it? No one told me, it wasn't on my radar -- Sultans Of Swing, Walk of Life, Money for Nothin', yes I heard those. I missed this one -- I missed it for 41 years. To be honest, what I missed, laid end to end, would stretch from where I live (California) to Johannesburg (where my best friend lives). We miss things, sadly -- then we find them, wonderfully. If you hadn't reacted to Sultans of Swing, I wouldn't have found Telegraph Road.
Trolls will be trolls. We'll go discover wonderful things together while they suffer alone. Thank you!

You're right. I missed most of their work until the mid 80s when the Brothers in Arms album was released. Im also an ABBA fan, and I missed 75% of their stuff until I discovered it on YT. A lot of great music just never made it into the mainstream. Back in those days, if it wasn't played regularly on the radio, it didn't get noticed, and we only had one radio station.

As I said, I was at Hammersmith for this.
We didn't think they were going to play it because its such an epic complicated piece.
They played it right at the end, it still gives me goose bumps.
All of them were right on their game, Alan Clark's keyboards were sublime, such a tight band that even when he smashed up the scales, Terry Williams hit the cymbal spot on, it was amazing

So enjoyable to see you discover and appreciate Dire Straits. Fun fact -- did you know that Mark is actually left-handed, but plays like a master with his right hand? Thanks for not talking over the performance like some reactors do! Not only is he amazing on the guitar (obviously), he is also the genius song-writer and composer creating these gems, and it all works so beautifully because of their amazing combined musicianship 🙂 May I make a few suggestions for future Dire Straits reactions... A very unique, surprising and fabulous track is their live Alchemy performance of “Once Upon a Time in the West”; do yourself a favour and check it out. Another worthwhile performance would be "Money For Nothing" from ‘Dire Straits (Live) - On The Night’ in 1992, which includes what is widely considered one of the all-time best guitar riffs. Another excellent (although more somber) track to check out is Brothers in Arms; I would suggest watching the official video first to fully appreciate the lyrics and meaning of the song, and then checking out a live performance to appreciate Mark’s extended guitar solo (the version from 'On The Night" is good, and the performance from Wembely in 1998 is on another level!).

For awesome drumming check out Keith Moon of The Who and Todd Sucherman of Styx(Live 1996 or his drumeo masterclasses or his many youtube videos of his drumming in concert with Styx). "Castle Walls" was not a hit, but is a fan favorite.

So many more great Dire Straits live performances to see. Take a look at the two songs they did at Knebworth '90 with Eric Clapton and his band sticking around on stage for them. One was "I Think I Love You Too Much", an awesome blues song with Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton trading solos.
Another group you might like to check out is The Jeff Healey Band who did a cover of "I Think I Love You Too Much" on their Hell To Pay album with Mark playing second guitar and singing backing vocals. You need to see Jeff Healey play live; he was quite something! As you're into heavier rock I suspect his style will appeal to you.

    • @StevenQ74

Hi Shane. The Straits got banned from South Africa in 1979 because they gave the royalties that they earned in South Africa to Amnesty International during the despised apartheid regime. I am so glad that you have found them a little later than most of the world, but you have found them and they are inside you. I'm 57 and was quite late to Pink Floyd (only 25 years not the 40+ that inretrospect in could have been), love them now. Grab as much Straits as you can (album wise) as some of their studio stuff is excellent (Industrial Disease from Love over Gold will make you laugh or wince!).
    Best wishes.
