Hello!
This has been a project I've been wanting to tackle so badly!! If you're in the doll hobby you may know how pricey clothing , wigs, and accessories can be. Its one of the main reasons (besides curiosity) that motivated me to try to make a wig for my smart doll! The total cost of the materials was around 20-25$. Even less for me since I already had most of the materials and only needed the hair wefts :) If you only need the wefts, then the average price would be around 16$ for the wig! It takes time and a steady hand but once you get the hang of it, its the most relaxing activity everrr! The process is incredibly fun to watch! The wig I’m making is parted down the middle of the head. There are various ways to create a wig this is the style that will have no bangs.

MATERIALS //
- Elastic Lace
-1/4" in /or/ 1 cm Elastic
- Hand Quilting Thread
- Curved Needle (make sure its not too sharp)
- Heat Resistant Hair Wefts // One may not be enough, but two will leave you with a lot left over
- Scissors // Thread Clippers
WIG CAP //
To get started, measure your doll's head with the elastic while pulling slightly. The tightness will help keep the wig on! Don't be afraid to make it tight but don't over do it. Overlap the elastic ends and sew them ! Once you sew your elastic, place the lace over your doll's head and then the elastic over it. Cut the excess lace off but leave about .5 in /or / 2cm.
Prepare your double threaded curved needle. Start by lifting the excess lace over the elastic and sewing as close to the elastic as you can. I recommend you use a blanket stitch. In a way it's a series of knots. They will strengthen the seam while allowing a bit of room to move around and shift about. Make your way all around then clip the excess and you're all set!
SEWING HAIR WEFTS//
Sewing the hair wefts has it's learning curve but once you get past it, it's a breeze!
Slowly work your way up! I also recommend branding each weft after you sew it on, it keeps everything more organized and clean. Take your time and don't stress if you get a knot! Always try to use the other end of the needle to undo your last stitch! Never pull, it'll only tighten the knot! The amount layers you want to add is up to you. The more you add, the heavier the wig will be and may have trouble staying on. Once there aren't any wefts showing through, you're set! Do a boil wash and watch the hair flatten in place! It's the most satisfying part :3
If you want to have waves you can braid the hair or section it off with tight thread like I did before a boil wash. By the time they dry the'll have wonderful waves !

nice vid! I have a tip about the parting - you can cut a slit in the wig cap, and pull the weft ends of parting piece through the slit so it's on the inside of the wig cap, and sew it down from the inside. That way, your wefts won't be exposed.

Have you tried using a small, surgical needle driver? It makes all the difference with curved or straight needles.

Good timing, I'm going to make a wig in the near future. For a 1/4 BJD. Since her head is smaller I only got one weft pack I hope it'll be enough.
I think other wig videos often aren't detailed enough. They don't show any in between stuff. I was looking for a longer one. So thank you for posting this^^

This video was randomly shown to me and I’m glad this was very useful. I was thinking instead of coloring the part in the end (which worked beautifully btw) maybe you can make a part using the thatching method and then seal in place with the boil wash. I’m only saying this because I do fear that the smart doll may stain easily 😅 . Overall great video 🙌🏾

I m new at this so....a tip i recently learned last nite just before i found SmartDollSewingw/Joe is to use acne cream with 10% benzol to get stains out. After applying, wrap seran/plastic wrap around n set in sunlight for a day or longer or near a heater as needed. It got ink stain out fairly decently depending on how big the spot was. Dont remember the gal's name but it was on a barbie doll repair vid. Hope this helps.

Wow now that's a lot of work haha I guess I didn't consider how much time it takes to create one of these so thank you for enlightening me. Out of curiosity, is it any harder to do this process with shorter wefts?
It takes a while but the end result can be sooo rewarding!! :) thank you!! In all honestly, mid length hair may be a bit easier to handle and keep pinned to the wig cap since it’s less weight! Also no tangles! Besides that I’m sure it’s the same process ! I chose to torture myself with this length because I love me a LONG wig lol ! They can be tough to find and are normally very pricy as I’m sure you know!

Quick question. First off, this is the exact video I have been looking for as far as how to sew a wig together, so thank you. Where did you get the wefts from? Did you make those yourself? If there is someone that sells them already made like that, I'd love to see if they have the colors I'm looking for.
Hey! Thank you so much for watching! I purchase the wefts from amazon. For sorter ones I usually make them myself from hair I’ve trimmed however I have a new wig video coming soon where I make a shorter wig. I plan on showing how to split long wefts into shorter ones
Hello again :D I made the wig. When I made it and got to the part I had one hell of a time separating the hair to get the part, the whole thing looks a bit wonky. But I think I know how to do better next time. Overall I had a pretty good time following the tutorial.
I do have one question though: The wefts I got looked a bit different (the sown part that is). Where did you get yours? Or did you make them?
Hey!! I’m so happy to hear you made your own!! Lol don’t worry about the part too much Bc mine is super wonky too!! A boil wash really helped it settle! I purchased my wefts from amazon! That bundle I had was only 8$! I’ll post affiliate links soon hehe
I have never seen scissors like that before! What they called n where do u find them? Also i noticed that u were tucking the hair under the edge if cap n taking longer stitches as u got to the top. Will that still hold up to brushing/combing? Im beginning to realize choosing how u want the hair to look determines how the wefts get sewed on, am i right?
Edit to add: im curious to know why the thread does match in color to the hair? I can remember being taught in school to match ur thread as best as poss unless u wanted the contrast to show.

If I’m correct I believe they’re called appliqué scissors ! They’re super handy ! Gifted to me by my first sewing teacher. They’re very dear to me.
It depends but mine has been holding up pretty well. Thanks to the stretchy mesh/lace material I use for the wigcap, it gives the stitches some ease when being tugged on and the wig cap stretches to prevent any tears. So combing is totally fine.
Yup you’re right, it really depends on the hairstyle you’re going for.
For my doll sewing I make a conscience decision to only use white threads to prevent staining. With the layering and boil washes the white threads stay hidden

Do u have to use a curved needle?
Not at all! It just makes it way easier to run your needle through and there’s less chances of you scratching your doll since the point of the needle curves outward as soon as you make the stitch where if it was a regular straight needle you’d have the run it though the wig cap parallel to the dolls head and risk scratching the skin or stabbing as you run it through! It would have to be pulled carefully through each time. Hope that makes sense!

Maybe you could use pink cotton to sew dolls hair on.
I would but I’m scared of it staining the doll, the white thread is just to be on the safe side
@@Joesewz I'm sure you can buy thread in different colors. I thought it would be easier than using the pencil to color it in at the end, but you did a beautiful job and I learned a lot. Sorry had to edit. I meant thread that doesnt stain.
@@upsidedownworld5104 I definitely could however I prefer to use what I have on hand plus I’d rather play it safe with white thread. Having to stain test threads and color match is another part I wanted to cut out. Takes too long. So it really isn’t worth the time and money to me. The color pencils worked perfectly and I really recommend it! Glad the video helped ! Thank you

I was lucky enough to receive a big package of unneeded sewing supplies from a friend a while back! A few of these were in there 🥰 I’m sure you’ll be able to find some online or at a fabric store !

@@CucNguyen-jy3vu those are actually from Japan, Smart Dolls are from Japan. If you'd like, send me a pm and I'll check doll companies which have Asian faces which I recommend. Do be warned that there are vinyl and resin, as well as the prices for these girls and boys are high.
For some one who asked “ where to buy the curve needle ! “ Do not know which’s country you live on, but the answer is very simple : just go wherever sold fabrics , at sewing notion section you find it . Sometimes I also find it at Dollar Store .
I feel like he could have poked the doll on accident. Who else did to.
Thats always a risk and it could definitely happen but in reality the lace is pretty loose and the needle isn’t extremely sharp so even if I was to poke the doll it wouldn’t do much to her! If you try this just make sure the needle isn’t too pointy!
