Lavinia were trapped in a sordid scheme. They were not supposed to be naked in the videos when they signed the contract and when they arrived in Japan, they were left in the middle of nowhere with no translator and were talked into doing the videos with their breasts exposed. The crew threatened them to leave them with no support and made them believe it would be a very limited release. So I guess they could still have said no. But you need to imagine the situation they were in, in a foreign country with nobody to give them advice or protect them, having financial issues and really needing the money. It’s not that simple and it’s very easy for everyone to blame them considering the circumstances.
@msms68 The book is called 'Alexandra's secrets' but the English version is called 'The secrets of a gymnast' and Lavinia Miloşovici, Corina Ungureanu and Claudia Presecan did appear nude in the video.
As it was..Lavinia really needed the money. She had hit hard times...and had had a son who has special needs & medical health problems..This is expensive...and so to help her child...which any mother would do....she agreed to do the video to use the money to aid in her sons health.
You didn't have to be so rude in your response, I simply did not know that the small clip I had seen was not the complete video. And nowhere in my previous comment did I judge any of the women for their participation in the videos. I understand that they needed the money and had no other means of getting that money.
Yes they DID appear naked in the video...I have it.....Most people have only seen the clips of them doing the parallel bar and the horse..and a little floor. BUT.. they also did do a fantasy dance routine..and a session when they were bathing..and in those they WERE naked. So don't guess...know what your talking about before spouting it.
duh! because lavinia apeared with the uniform of the romanian gymanstics federation, or whatever their name is, the point is she appeared with the uniform of some big shot institution
@tmwalkerm ignorance is in your part, that substance was not forbiden by fig because it really doesnt help,it was forbiden for the atlhetes in other sport but olimpic commity does not like it when the top 3 podium was taken by one single nation and tested andreea twice in order to get sometingh increminator, and after 2 years they take the substance off the banned list very quietly.if thats right to you then you not understand realy nothing at all of what is going on the olympics.
Loretta Hall one of the gymnasts injured her ACL while in Atlanta, Milosovici had a sprained ankle and Gogean had an emergency appendectomy so the Romanian team were pretty beat up in ‘96
They actually only ended up with 5 gymnasts competing and every girl had to perform on every apparatus. The original team was Gina Gogean, Simona Amanar, Ana Maria Bican, Lavinia Milosovici, Alexandra Marinescu, Mirela Tugurlan, and Andreea Cacovean. Cacovean injured her back and didn’t make the trip to Atlanta, so Romania was down to 6 gymnasts and then Ana Maria injured her knee badly enough she needed immediate surgery (I remember they showed video of her at the hospital - Emory I think - being pushed in a wheelchair) and so the team was down to five. Gogean was lucky in that she was able to have arthroscopic surgery to remove her appendix, otherwise she wouldn’t have been able to recover in time to compete in Atlanta either. But I think Milosivici was having problems with one or both ankles, and Marinscu’s back may have been acting up as well. They just didn’t have any luck at all in’96.
was nobody disqualified, only they took the medal from andreea after in another day, once again ,tmwalkerm, you r proving yourself ignorant about what happened in sidney.
...octavian belu...liar...he was taft, bully, and everithing, but i know one thing....when he was the head coach, romanians were much, much better.... they were the best...now they are d best only in our hearts, but not in the world....
I know it seems unfair that she lost her medal but when you thin about it how would it feel to be the other person who got the silver or bronze...etc. Wouldn't you wonder if the drug had any advantage. The point is that the drug she took was illegal at the time and it doesn't matter whether it's not illegal in the sport now. What matters is that the rules at the time were broken and the coach made up excuses.
...and they did return joy to the romanian gymnastics! love you girls!!
romania is the best forever!
That Romanian SWEEP was the biggest night in history. They need to allow 3 gymansts per country to compete in the alround again.

Does anyone know if that book they talk about in this piece is available anywhere? I wonder what it was about and if its even translated into English.
how come in 1996 the US team had 7 members, and romania only had 6 ???
