I trained with Bela when he came to my gym a long time ago...he was very hard for me to understand but he's the best coach and very funny!!! I really miss gymnastics!!!

Bela Karolyi actually have been my trainer on a gymnastic camp!!! I´m from Sweden, and it was in Sweden, so he said to me RAKA BENEN! which means "Shave your legs" in swedish! but he should say STRAIGHT YOUR LEGS! He was´nt so good at swedish, but he was really good!

Thanks for posting this...helps those hung up on comparing "then-and-now" skills to understand the impact of huge improvements in safety & equipment on reducing injuries while advancing skills. Now if only they could be as effortlessly graceful as Nadia still is.
Nice to see Nadia doing her stuff again. The US does not have a government-centralized training system like most countries do, so it's up to the individual club coaches to set the time. There's usually a training camp for the national team once every 2 or 3 months, and that semi-centralized system is run on sponsors and personal funds.

I don't really know why she defected one month before the revolution. It was known that there will be one at the time she left and it was very dangerous for her and especially for her family. Maybe that's why, one couldn't know how things evolved and how long it will last. Plus, it was easier the get asylum before the revolution or during. Afterwards there was no reason to leave Romania and get help from other countries.
It's kind of strange seeing Kerri Strug on here with her ponytail, when I'm so used to seeing her with that short haircut, running down and sticking the landing on vault!

Having Nadia go against the then teenagers of Kim Zmeskel, Kerri Strug, etc. was agewise the same as when Oksana Chusovitina (at 33) competed against the teenage gymnasts at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Funny thing is, Oksana C. is the same age as what the teens from this video (Kim, Kerri, Betty, etc.) now are! (When this video was made Nastia Liukin was a year old and Shawn Johnson wasn't even born yet!) My how time flies!

Many Romanian gymnasts came forward and told the truth about Karolys husband and wife, how horrifically they abused the girls beating them up for no reason, starving them, humiliating them, shouting and calling them names.... those girls were traumatised for life... so sad...horrific stories that is hard to describe. Bela and his wife should have been jailed years ago but USA made them heroes. It's not right 😔
