One of the best performances in DCI - total package: killer percussion, loud ass brass, insane performance factor from the guard...GE to the max. I'm sure babies were being thrown in crowd, the pics floating around on the internet say it all. A pirate's life for me 👍
It's my guilty pleasure show all the way. It's dirty, loud, uncontrollable madness, the crowd sells it like DEATH, and I LOVE it. They told the judges to shove it and made magic on the gridiron.
My guilty pleasure DCI show. It may not be the cleanest, or the most complex, or the best performed. It didn't win any awards, and it didn't even medal. But it's just SO MUCH FUN TO WATCH.
@@jonathanbowen3293 Same. Nowadays everyone goes for a scorecard-perfect show, which of course has led to shows like Felliniesque and T/LT, but its sometimes better to give the scorecards and judges the finger and just make a show that entertains; something like BAC 2018 or 2019, or SCV 2019. It's time for DCI to let its hair down a bit.
This show is possibly my favorite DCI show ever, too. I was in the audience for both the semis and finals, and I still get goosebumps remembering the surprise change to the end of the show that the Scouts put in for finals (watch the crowd going nuts at the end)!
I’ve watched this about once a year for the past 25 years. This is the first time I’ve noticed the pit standing on the pit equipment during the ending hit. Glorious.
@@highstimulation2497 Nope. Purely from a judge being insulted by the use of keyboards in such a manner. Quarters judge was mad about it and gave them 11th place. Semis judge didn’t agree, gave them 6th place. Finals judge was a protege of the quarters judge and, ultimately, gave them 9th place. This story comes from drum corps staff aware of the incident, but of course we may always want to take it with somewhat a grain of salt - I mean, who knows how the telephone game can affect these things.
They were at Music on the Move when it was still at Tulsa Union stadium. . . . to the south a violent eastern Oklahoma late summer classic storm was approaching. Lightning, wind, rotation of clouds, the works, just right before the Scouts performed, but held off until their show was finished. . . .eerie drum corps karma ? ? needless to say it was great !
This show hits like a freight train. I need to hear this with the modern toys. Imagine that chord in the closer made even louder with full amplification.
Props on the field do ad to the shows of today I agree. But this performance by scouts goes to show you can electrify A stadium like these guys did back in the day without props
The company front hold with the camera and flag was thrown in just a few hours before the performance. The staff pulled a prank on us with the long hold on our last practice run-through, and then at dinner time told us it was in for the performance. We knew nothing about the flag and camera though. Fun note, we got a penalty for the camera 😆😆
I wonder if it was exhausting? That would have felt "so surreal," especially at finals. I mean once, that summer in Cadets, we in the pit forgot a cymbal bag, among many, in the truck. several pair of crash cymbals (we used a lot) were um, not where they needed to be. At the end of our second tune, I had (along with about 6 other people) crash cymbal notes, and my cymbals were some of those missing. My god, the sensation of that moment, where I realized I wasn't playing when I was supposed to be, no cymbals... dwarfed many other routine shows. man that show sticks out like a sore thumb in my memory, most of the others are just a blur at this point. To make a long story short (too late,) a change of that magnitude and effect, especially the last day, would have had me feeling WAY more aware of that particular moment than normal, cause it would have been so not-routine. Was it fun? exhausting? either way I totally love it, it's about the coolest thing from all shows that years and some other years. love it. There's some reactor on youtube who has filmed herself watching this show, and after that chord, she exclaims with amazement that she can't believe it's still going:)
No, you can’t edit audio externally and just have it sound like Bb instruments. I prefer Bb’s intonation and have found them just as loud as the three valve Gs (not two valve), but if you pitch shifted it to be in the same keys as the Bbs, the tone color and intonation would still just sound like G bugles, but it would be less resonant. Even if you could correct for those things, the writing would be nonsensical for Bbs.

92-97 Madison .... some of the best shit ever.
98-99 was also great, 98 not as much but 99 is 😍
Jonathan I’ll have to revisit ... don’t remember those years at all.
Kevin Kirwan Jesus Christ Superstar is an amazing show.
Jonathan Bowen see that’s why I dont remember it ... I hate the music from JCS
Kevin Kirwan I like some of it, Madison did the best parts of it
So glad I got to be there in person all three nights.

I wish more shows were like this

It won the Spirit of Disney Award😀
@@erikwaterson361 Given the 2021 season, I'd say that your wish has been granted!
Why is it a “guilty pleasure”? It’s awesome kickass drum corps. Top notch in every respect.
No matter how many times I watch this performance of this show, the crowd roar at the end always gets me.
probably one of the more underrated shows of '97. . . . . but man it had energy ! No other corps had a crowd reaction like the one here !
I started listening to DCI as a drummer in HS in ‘97 .. To this day, about 50 live DCI shows I’ve been to, this still tops ‘em all.
I am so happy to see this show in here now. I just hope it stays up. My favorite DCI show ever.
Took awhile to find. And same, one of my favorite Madison Scouts shows of all time.
Jonathan Bowen I immediately sent this link to Courtney Coulston who does DCI reaction videos.

I was hoping she'd see this!!!

It cost them points as well!

I was marching Surf when this show was out. I was obsessed with it.
25 years later, still gives me goosebumps. best show ever

I'm watching this in my marching band class RN.
isn't it amazing how kids react to these shows ? even my farm kids out in the OK panhandle don't say "1997 ? that was last century" !

This was my HS inspiration in our 2008 show to the conquer the seas

Thank you for the upload, I saw this live when I was a little kid.
When this show only got 5th place, I was surprised that crowd didn't burn down the Citrus Bowl.
Still doesn’t make sense to me.

I mean they had props too they just moved and were part of the show from start to finish. MS colorguard was always top notch in the 90’s
So good!

Well, SHIVER ME TIMBERS! RRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!
Can someone shift the audio of this to make it sound like today’s bugles?
You mean today's medium bore marching band trumpets instead of the extra large bore G bugles? No thank you.
Please don't

great example of why dci shouldn't have to be about playing into the judges or having to be the cleanest ever, we need more fun dci
