After hearing the rehearsal clip, it makes sense why the bass drum feature sounded weird to me at finals, why? Apparently the top bass drummer’s drum head ripped after the opener. So the 2nd bass had to cover his parts.
I did my best, the top head broke end of the opener. After I missed a spin and drill move in the closer trying to plan ahead for the bass feature I gave up and just let it go. It was a definitely a major bummer.
from 3:16 (wow ? strange !) on, that is among the best (if not best) musical productions of this great classic. THOSE CHOPS ! ! ! I love the creativity of the arrangement, different but not weird.
IIRC much of that was just bad luck. I could be wrong as this was over twenty years ago! If memory serves me correctly, the top bass drum was a member of my university drumline. It's plain bad luck: one of his heads split going into the closer. Assuming that this is the recording I remember from so many years (2+ decades!) ago, if you look closely you can even see the split in the head in one or two shots (though these shots may have since been edited out in the intervening years). But that's why he didn't play anything in the bass soli that begins the piece- he couldn't, literally could not.
Hey, I covered the solo in the beginning. It was the bass solo in the feature I didn’t cover because I missed a couple drill moves trying to plan for it. Bass 2, that was me. Also, some missing bass notes was not the reason we got sixth place, we were in sixth place almost all year if I remember correctly.
@@erroneous3493 In fairness, Scouts were in 6th place for most of the 90’s because our staff didn’t attend judges critique, so we felt at home there blowing the panties off all the hotties in the stands. 😂😂
Im watching DCI right now. I'm so tired of watching the corps prance around instead of marching like the old school days like this. They showed much more discipline and magic back then. I marched and it is so disappointing to see where DCI has gone. Don't get me wrong I LOVE DCI but this is real corp marching. When the players marched and not pranced (leave that for the color guard). GO BLUE DEVS.
Can you tell why this is inferior to the 1988 version? It is faster, but the music is broken up by drum breaks rather than united by the brass soloist. The execution is poorer. The drill is less original and interesting except for the final unspiraling, which is fantastic. Very good, but not great like 1988.
The French horn solo at the end of 88 show was best ending for a malaguena... they should've put that in 96 show.. cadets 03 version was alright... Boston 03 version was pretty good.. I don't think it's been played since
@@sylviadinnam2343 2012 show actually has parts of both Malaga and Malaguena in it. They literally did a mashup of Malaguena with "The Great Gate of Kiev" from Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" which was the closer.
Hood classic

3:33 Probably the best closer I've ever seen!

This still makes me mad....Maybe they weren't the best corps that day but they were definitely better than 6th....and the crowd felt the same way too.

@KyleNally Well that is indeed some crappy luck!

@@ProudPapaJD I looked this up because I’m huge nerd. But you guys got 5th at quarter finals. I bet that must have been cool. Also 94.5 damn

Not even close to 88. In fact, I got a hot dog after seeing this once. Second time I went to concession stand
