As much as I love Modern DCI shows, as I've been to many, I would've loved to have been alive at this time so I could've seen some of these absolutely classic shows. I know how much video doesn't do them justice. Couldn't Imagine the raw power of the Brass.
To help you imagine the power, my recollection from seeing this live performance in KC is that the crunch chord at 7:45 is the only time I've had to protect my ears due to decibel strain. I've seen almost every finals since and have yet to hear that level of intensity. I'll never forget it.

I was in my Freshman year at Southwest Missouri State in '88 playing mellophone. We did Malagueña that year and it's one of my favorite pieces to ever play. It's a phenomenal piece

I was 18 at the time and at the age of 51 I consider those eleven and a half minutes as one of my most cherished memories. For those brief moments it felt like we and 37,000 people were one. I saw you perform this show in Morgantown, WV when you had just come back from abroad. It may be the most memorable show I have ever seen. If there’s one moment that eclipses it, it is after the awards announcements, the Cadets won. The corps marched out in reverse order of finish. You played You’ll Never Walk Alone as you passed in review. It brings tears to my eyes to this day. I did not know it was your corps song but I knew you were passing in front of repeat champions and you just sent them a message that they had competition. Love the show, love the memories. The sound was AMAZING!

I am a Vanguard fan, but when the Scouts did that drill where you all spun around to get in that inverted triangle, I said to myself "Damn, That was Nice" I knew the 1988 DCI Champions were the Madison Scouts.
Aric - this performance will forever be legendary. Of late, ADHD arrangements are the norm and feel more like medleys with elements thrown in just to raise the difficulty level, when all we as an audience want to hear is "just one great arrangement of a song". ==> Malaguena, for example.

When we marched onto the fields in Europe, the audiences had no idea what was coming. One of our shows in England was in a complete downpour. When we were announced as DCI Champions, Arrowhead stadium went completely off the charts. If you haven’t already checked out the Madison Scouts Alumni project, you should. It was an incredible show as well. We only had only six practices together. Scott Stewart, our longtime Corps Director was speechless after the show.
The 88 Madison show is legendary for a number of reasons. 1) 1st win since 1975 2) They toured Europe during the season. They did a few shows in mid-June, then went overseas for about three weeks, returning almost in mid-July. That's a lot of time for the judges NOT to see you. 3) Malageuna -- ALWAYS a Madison classic. The opener was a placeholder until the REAL show started. When they were overseas, the played around with the opener a bit. In Germany, Drum Major Dan Feeny counted off in German (so instead of "one, two, one two three four" it was "eins, zwei, eins zwei drei vier"), and during one portion they played something appropriate for the locale....Beer Barrel Polka in Germany, London Bridge in England.
88 - the MAGIC YEAR!! Fun fact after the awards ceremony that year they stood together and sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” - the corps song a cappella. Chills.
This is the show that got me to audition for Madison...marched 89-90...two of the best summers of my life, and I had the privilege to march with many of the legends of this show!! From beginning to end, the music was mesmerizing, powerful, and emotional. The marching was superb and smooth, the drill and Guard was stunning...I could go on and on!! Thank you Courtney once again for an awesome review!! Btw, the Baritone player in the duet that you mentioned...the story goes, that due to the humidity that night, his valve got stuck causing him to slur that note...but still overall sounded great. If you watch the semi-finals version, you can hear the correct note.
I honestly thought he was embellishing that note. I noticed several places in the semifinal show that seemed to be played straight, as if they were saving the best for last. That semifinal show was marched even more cleanly than the finals.
I marched Suncoast Sound this year and we were outside the stadium during this show. During the park and blow at the 11:00 mark we all looked at each other because it was so loud and in tune. I will never forget that part. I preferred the Blue Devils show this year but Malaguena ? Words cannot describe the awesomeness of that piece of music.
I LOVE hearing the echoes of a drum corps either performing in the Stadium or warming up outside. The muffled yet obviously powerful brass from that distance just sends chills down my spine.
Your show was my 'sleeper' favorite that year, and got to see it many times on tour. Symphonic Dances for the Contemporary Child was a masterwork, ahead of its time like Medea was for Star a few years later. Would have connected and scored much higher in later years.
Ya they didn't hardly screw around with fancy beginnings back then. Literally once the show started it STARTED. Glad you enjoyed the show this one is a classic!

Liked the 1980 version better just because it inspired me to become a soloist in my h.s. marching band. I was 15 and the soprano duo was the most wicked thing I had ever heard! Those guys had big hearts and even bigger balls, when dci was raw and inspiring, not so mechanical and over technical for lack of better terminology. Do like the arrangement of this version, but I think I'm trying to say more is not better. Thx for listening to my opinion.
It was and the brass were 2 or 1 valve bugles in the key of G. A much darker and richer sound. Everyone in the activity that night knew it was THEIR night. Well done Scouts!
This is a favorite of mine too. I don't like to admit to the reality of time but back in 1960 I played in a competition marching band and our band played before The Madison Scouts who came after us in the South Milwaukee Music Festival. I stayed to watch their performance . At my age of 17 I then knew our band had a long way to go before we could be considered "a good marching band". As many of us have realized years later, those years of competition in a band or corps were some of our best years.
Just FYI, it's pronounced "MAL-a-GAIN-ya". The entire Malaguena Suite was my concert piano performance piece my senior year of college towards my Bachelor of Arts in Music degree (which was actually a year before this performance).
I marched in drum corps 1987-1990. 88-90 were amazing years. Try 88 Santa Clara, or Blue Devils, gosh nearly all the top 12. An amazing show is Phantom Regiment 1989.
88 was just a phenomenal year. I still consider it the gold standard. And 88 Scouts Malagueña will always be the gold standard for that piece in marching.
Thank you for FINALLY seeing this show, I only recommended a year ago 😜 This got me really into DCI...been hooked every since. Such a perfect year... could not have been done better.
I did a summer in a DCI corps way back when. It's a shame it's not very big in southern California. I took some friends to see the Tour of Champions at the Rose Bowl in 2004 and they were blown away - Vanguard, Blue Devils, Scouts, Cadets and more. You just don't get the full appreciation unless you see it live and feel the wall of sound pushing you back and see the precision of the drum lines up close. So cool to see a reactor give it a try.
I was lucky enough to be sitting on the upper deck during that performance and it was truly spectacular. If I recall correctly Madison was on a European tour that summer and came back to the states just in time to shock everybody by winning finals.
We came back just after July 4th. The first show back we took 2nd to Regiment (Cavies were 3rd). A week later at DCM Finals we took 4th. We were shocked (Regiment won). Then a week later we came 3rd at DCI Midwest (behind BD and SCV and ahead of Regiment). It all didn’t really start to come together until very late July/early August. We just got so much better with each and every passing day. It was really fun to experience that.
I went to college with one of the baritones in the duet during the ballad section. He told me he played it perfectly all summer until that performance....Amazing show. My favorite. 93'-94' alum - MYNWA
I am a young marcher, and this is the show that introduced me to dci, it is my most favorite so of all times and I almost cry every time I hear that beautiful piece played by an amazing group of marchers know as the Madison scouts. So cool, I had a flashback from being in the marching band back in 1993. I forgot about the “The Ballad” before Malagueña. Thank you for refreshing my memory cheers
This was the first and only year where the top 12 knew they were in the top 12, and the top 5 knew they were in the top 5, but they didn’t know where, as the scores from semi finals weren’t announced until finals. The Scouts had actually won Semis by a larger margin than they won finals. In fact, the Scouts was 1 of only 2 corps whose score actually DROPPED from Semis. So they definitely deserved to win.
There is nothing like that era of DCI. It has been 30+ years and I can still feel the music in the air and crowd roaring so loud the stadiums shook. So blessed to have been able to see it live in person.

The city of Madison is known for having amazing musicians living there because they are going to the University Of Wisconsin Madison. It's ranked #42 out of the best colleges in the US and a a top-ranked research institution. It's students (and the State as a whole) party like rockstars. Wisconsin has 10 out of the 20 drunkest cities in the US. (Madison is #4)
Oh yeah FEEL THE POWER! I was a 16 when I first saw this competition on tv. My mind was blown! When i got bak to school i asked my Band teacher if we could do shows the Madison Scouts! It’s great to be able to revisit these performances they are like old friends. However I do feel for the soloist who cracked a note at the big show those moments last forever and will go on LOL! These guys could really set the field on fire with their sound power and attack!
I was a musician in the 60’s and marched in many parades and field competitions I am from Milwaukee Wisconsin and the Maching/Concert Band I was in was the Milwaukee Continentals who became Goodwill Ambassadors of the US State Department in 1965. We watched all the Corps compete many many times. The Madison Scouts were always on top of their game and Madison is less than 1 hour from Milwaukee. Wisconsin and Illinois had some ELITE Corps and I would consider the 60’s as the Golden Era. But the Corps Spirit is strong and as such they continue to deliver amazing performances every summer. A military inspection, a sit down concert, a parade and finally the field competition was a familiar itinerary for any Corp worth its weight on any given week end. One thing you don't get from this video is the crowd went nuts for close to ten minutes. Madison Scouts have always been a crowd favorite. Their music and shows are for the fans not the judges. There is an old adage where they would say "They're throwing babies on the field it's so good" just to give you how extreme their thoughts were on the show.
Courtney heres an amazing fact about this show so madison scouts that year started extremely late for the dci season and they managed to get to 1st place 40 days late
I marched ‘88 Madison. We didn’t start late at all. In fact, the very first show of ‘88 was June 11th - we were there. Cavies were the only other top 25 corps at that show. Therefore, us and Cavies were the first two top 25 corps to start our seasons.
Best show ever 1982 Dekalb Drum Corps Midwest Finals. Madison Scouts and Phantom tied for 1st place. They both had to perform their shows over again in a Sudden Death tie breaker. That night was epic.
I like everyone love Malaguena but no one ever talks about Concherto for Guitar and Jazz Orchestra (the first number). Man that was a hard piece of music but fun as hell to play and march to. Thanks for reacting to this Courtney. I enjoyed it.
I saw the Madison Scouts at a drum and bugle corps competition at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1980 or 1981. L was in band in high school from 1975-79. Some former band mates called me at my apartment and asked to get tickets. They were seniors in high school at the time. I got the tickets on campus cheap. We also saw them do an exhibition at a marching band competition in Cleveland, Tennessee in 1975 or 1976 or 1977. I do not remember exactly which year. My brain doesn't work as well at 60.
Great show - I was there live. I have to say , the audio in this video version is far from the best I've heard - something off with this one. Trust me, live was a totally different and better experience ;-).
DCI recording from this era are way too compressed IMO. I have alot of DCI shows from the 80's through the 00's and every one of them I have adjusted the audio before putting them on CD or on my phone. The audio files from this year are lacking some dynamics and have a definite digital sound that makes the drum sounds thick and the horns kind of weaker than the really were. I marched Suncoast Sound this year and was a spectator for some of Finals because we went on 2nd Finals night. BD sounded better in person !

I love this type of corps marching. Not this prancing around the field, funky “uniforms,” and obnoxious props these days. I marched and this is how I was trained. I love DCI but it’s definitely not what it used to be.
Courtney the scouts are wide open pedal to the metal they just come out and bang you over the head they're horn line is amazing and I'll tell you they just got they got real much I mean they just come out and say here it is boys now you go out and beat it and when when the scouts are right and they're at the top of the game there there is exciting as there is in drum corps I mean it's when the scouts are on their game they're awesome

This year was sort of controversial. In finals week, didn’t they have to pick numbers on performance order? No one knew what placement they had during quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. I think the corps that made the top five to make the PBS broadcast knew who they were. Also from the beginning of the season up to championship week, the Blue Devils were undefeated. Madison Scouts also had done a European tour during the season. The uniforms you see they are wearing were new to them this year. Also if I remember correctly, didn’t they change the scoring captions this year?
They picked numbers for performance slots, yes. And Scouts didn't know that they had won prelims and semis because of the "mystery system", from what I'm told from former members.
@@jeffgray7922 As a member that march that year, we had no idea we won prelims. Since they only announced who were in the top five, and not placement, we just figured BD won since they were undefeated. We had been touring with SCV and came within a few tenths the show before semi's. We all thought that a a fluke. In fact, the rehearsal after finals was one of our worst of the season because we felt being in the top five was an accomplishment. I vividly remember the horn staff sitting down with us and saying they felt we had a real shot at winning and to stop screwing around. It didn't matter, we just wanted to please the crowed, that was all, winning was not on our mind.

I was just hoping for 4th because I thought that would mean we’d beat Regiment, Cavies and Star and that is all I cared about. It wasn’t until I got home and watch the video that I saw how good we were.

That’s the general effect category. Not sure if the judges read the crowd, but they should. :). Some of the new stuff just aren’t very appealing to me. It seems to be just for score.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this was before amplification was introduced. Which means that sound was all lung power.
It was and the brass were 2 or 1 valve bugles in the key of G. A much darker and richer sound. Everyone in the activity that night knew it was THEIR night. Well done Scouts!
This was WAYYY before amps. The amp thing is just a recent abomination - totally busted up the beautiful natural sound.
This is a favorite of mine too. I don't like to admit to the reality of time but back in 1960 I played in a competition marching band and our band played before The Madison Scouts who came after us in the South Milwaukee Music Festival. I stayed to watch their performance . At my age of 17 I then knew our band had a long way to go before we could be considered "a good marching band".
As many of us have realized years later, those years of competition in a band or corps were some of our best years.

Just FYI, it's pronounced "MAL-a-GAIN-ya". The entire Malaguena Suite was my concert piano performance piece my senior year of college towards my Bachelor of Arts in Music degree (which was actually a year before this performance).
I marched in drum corps 1987-1990. 88-90 were amazing years. Try 88 Santa Clara, or Blue Devils, gosh nearly all the top 12. An amazing show is Phantom Regiment 1989.

88 was just a phenomenal year. I still consider it the gold standard. And 88 Scouts Malagueña will always be the gold standard for that piece in marching.

Thank you for FINALLY seeing this show, I only recommended a year ago 😜 This got me really into DCI...been hooked every since. Such a perfect year... could not have been done better.
I did a summer in a DCI corps way back when. It's a shame it's not very big in southern California. I took some friends to see the Tour of Champions at the Rose Bowl in 2004 and they were blown away - Vanguard, Blue Devils, Scouts, Cadets and more. You just don't get the full appreciation unless you see it live and feel the wall of sound pushing you back and see the precision of the drum lines up close. So cool to see a reactor give it a try.
I was lucky enough to be sitting on the upper deck during that performance and it was truly spectacular. If I recall correctly Madison was on a European tour that summer and came back to the states just in time to shock everybody by winning finals.
We came back just after July 4th. The first show back we took 2nd to Regiment (Cavies were 3rd). A week later at DCM Finals we took 4th. We were shocked (Regiment won). Then a week later we came 3rd at DCI Midwest (behind BD and SCV and ahead of Regiment). It all didn’t really start to come together until very late July/early August. We just got so much better with each and every passing day. It was really fun to experience that.

I am a young marcher, and this is the show that introduced me to dci, it is my most favorite so of all times and I almost cry every time I hear that beautiful piece played by an amazing group of marchers know as the Madison scouts. I still dream about hearing that show in person one day. Thank you all for your service that year and thank you Courtney for an amazing reaction!!
So cool, I had a flashback from being in the marching band back in 1993. I forgot about the “The Ballad” before Malagueña. Thank you for refreshing my memory cheers
I remember this, I was there. Legendary show. For me still the best ever.
This was the first and only year where the top 12 knew they were in the top 12, and the top 5 knew they were in the top 5, but they didn’t know where, as the scores from semi finals weren’t announced until finals. The Scouts had actually won Semis by a larger margin than they won finals. In fact, the Scouts was 1 of only 2 corps whose score actually DROPPED from Semis. So they definitely deserved to win.
There is nothing like that era of DCI. It has been 30+ years and I can still feel the music in the air and crowd roaring so loud the stadiums shook. So blessed to have been able to see it live in person.

It's ranked #42 out of the best colleges in the US and a a top-ranked research institution.
It's students (and the State as a whole) party like rockstars.
Wisconsin has 10 out of the 20 drunkest cities in the US. (Madison is #4)

Oh yeah FEEL THE POWER! I was a 16 when I first saw this competition on tv. My mind was blown! When i got bak to school i asked my Band teacher if we could do shows the Madison Scouts! It’s great to be able to revisit these performances they are like old friends. However I do feel for the soloist who cracked a note at the big show those moments last forever and will go on LOL! These guys could really set the field on fire with their sound power and attack!
This their signature song. I get chills every time I see this show. The 1988 DCI finals was all good in my opinion.

My all time favorite show
I was a musician in the 60’s and marched in many parades and field competitions I am from Milwaukee Wisconsin and the Maching/Concert Band I was in was the Milwaukee Continentals who became Goodwill Ambassadors of the US State Department in 1965. We watched all the Corps compete many many times. The Madison Scouts were always on top of their game and Madison is less than 1 hour from Milwaukee. Wisconsin and Illinois had some ELITE Corps and I would consider the 60’s as the Golden Era. But the Corps Spirit is strong and as such they continue to deliver amazing performances every summer. A military inspection, a sit down concert, a parade and finally the field competition was a familiar itinerary for any Corp worth its weight on any given week end. One thing you don't get from this video is the crowd went nuts for close to ten minutes. Madison Scouts have always been a crowd favorite. Their music and shows are for the fans not the judges. There is an old adage where they would say "They're throwing babies on the field it's so good" just to give you how extreme their thoughts were on the show.
Played at Iowa under Dr. Tom Davis in the marching band in 73 and 74! It was awesome!

Courtney heres an amazing fact about this show so madison scouts that year started extremely late for the dci season and they managed to get to 1st place 40 days late
I marched ‘88 Madison. We didn’t start late at all. In fact, the very first show of ‘88 was June 11th - we were there. Cavies were the only other top 25 corps at that show. Therefore, us and Cavies were the first two top 25 corps to start our seasons.
Best show ever 1982 Dekalb Drum Corps Midwest Finals. Madison Scouts and Phantom tied for 1st place. They both had to perform their shows over again in a Sudden Death tie breaker. That night was epic.
I like everyone love Malaguena but no one ever talks about Concherto for Guitar and Jazz Orchestra (the first number). Man that was a hard piece of music but fun as hell to play and march to. Thanks for reacting to this Courtney. I enjoyed it.

Anthony was right. This era, through the early 90's was pure. It may not have been perfect, but it was pure.
I saw the Madison Scouts at a drum and bugle corps competition at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1980 or 1981. L was in band in high school from 1975-79. Some former band mates called me at my apartment and asked to get tickets. They were seniors in high school at the time. I got the tickets on campus cheap. We also saw them do an exhibition at a marching band competition in Cleveland, Tennessee in 1975 or 1976 or 1977. I do not remember exactly which year. My brain doesn't work as well at 60.
Great show - I was there live. I have to say , the audio in this video version is far from the best I've heard - something off with this one. Trust me, live was a totally different and better experience ;-).
DCI recording from this era are way too compressed IMO. I have alot of DCI shows from the 80's through the 00's and every one of them I have adjusted the audio before putting them on CD or on my phone. The audio files from this year are lacking some dynamics and have a definite digital sound that makes the drum sounds thick and the horns kind of weaker than the really were. I marched Suncoast Sound this year and was a spectator for some of Finals because we went on 2nd Finals night. BD sounded better in person !

I love this type of corps marching. Not this prancing around the field, funky “uniforms,” and obnoxious props these days. I marched and this is how I was trained. I love DCI but it’s definitely not what it used to be.

This year was sort of controversial. In finals week, didn’t they have to pick numbers on performance order? No one knew what placement they had during quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. I think the corps that made the top five to make the PBS broadcast knew who they were.
Also from the beginning of the season up to championship week, the Blue Devils were undefeated.
Madison Scouts also had done a European tour during the season. The uniforms you see they are wearing were new to them this year.

They picked numbers for performance slots, yes. And Scouts didn't know that they had won prelims and semis because of the "mystery system", from what I'm told from former members.
@@jeffgray7922 As a member that march that year, we had no idea we won prelims. Since they only announced who were in the top five, and not placement, we just figured BD won since they were undefeated. We had been touring with SCV and came within a few tenths the show before semi's. We all thought that a a fluke. In fact, the rehearsal after finals was one of our worst of the season because we felt being in the top five was an accomplishment. I vividly remember the horn staff sitting down with us and saying they felt we had a real shot at winning and to stop screwing around. It didn't matter, we just wanted to please the crowed, that was all, winning was not on our mind.
@@nitrox32 I remember that too during finals week. I didn’t believe it either when they sat us down and told us that. I was just hoping for 4th because I thought that would mean we’d beat Regiment, Cavies and Star and that is all I cared about. It wasn’t until I got home and watch the video that I saw how good we were.
@@nitrox32 they had to pick the order of the "bottom" 7 and the top 5, because only the top 5 were on the live DCI telecast on PBS. I marched baritone in Scouts that year.

There are 2 DCI Titles where it has been said that the crowd pulled the corps to the Championship... This one and Phantom Regiment's Sparticus...
Both won because they DESERVED to. The crowd didn't do anything but cheer. The kids won those championships themselves.
That’s the general effect category. Not sure if the judges read the crowd, but they should. :). Some of the new stuff just aren’t very appealing to me. It seems to be just for score.
@@jeffgray7922 I agree. We got great crowd response all year. We knew the crowd was going to go nuts. Hard work and preparation were key here, and one hell of a show design.
