- In my opinion, from years '95-'97, The Madison Scouts created a short lived dynasty. This dynasty was built fan appeal, roaring hornlines, ramming drumlines, and raucous color guard.

Me too. This is what drum corps is about. It’s a shame that mentioning this fact in the community just gets you called a dinosaur.

2010s-20s marcher here. I think it’s at times more fun to perform because of the expression and showmanship that goes into a modern drum corps show. However, I have to say out of the shows I’ve marched, the more traditional shows always stand out. I would agree with you that as of the past two seasons, it’s kind of gotten out of hand. If we don’t have traditional shows, maybe we can all have similar hair and show prep standards? It feels like everyone is wearing earrings, crazy hair, and is making a point to stand out and look different. I do think that the hats helped mediate that issue. But yeah, I’d agree with you all.

1995 This is the Madison Scouts we need to see and hear again. Loud, in your face, fast, and exciting. Please bring this Madison Scouts back to those of us that have loved them since the 1970s.
The 1995 Scouts show is a demonstration in raw brass power. They START out on fire and by the end of the show are nuclear. They bring it for the entire 11+ minutes, and it's not like that hornline got much of a break, but there was no breakdown in quality. It's a shame you don't see hornlines like this anymore. Whenever this show pops up in my suggested watching, I'll click on it.
8 tenors and 6 bass drums in the battery.....they were pushing the battery envelope that season with drum voices. Legends

95' Scouts, one of the most intense shows ever. Multiple standing O's from the crowds. Loved that show and very much miss that Drum Corps...

One of my favorite DCI shows ever. I really miss the 1980-2005 era. The perfect balance between perfection, excellence, and entertainment.

I'd give that to '97 Scouts, that or Phantom winning in 2008. Genuinely DEAFENING. But that crowd was popping off
No way the crowd reacts to any current show like they used to. Back in the day, every corps in the top 6 might get a couple of spontaneous standing o’s during their show. These days, people give the polite obligatory standing o at the end. Yet in the eyes of the community at large, we’re just dinosaurs that need to move on.
That's true. When I taught in the 70s, we would shoot for at least 3 SOs in the sow.@@omariparker3769
I call bull. All of you scout guys need to go on a search for those big balls you keep referring to and stop your bichin' & get with the program. DCI is not going to change it back to the 90's, 80's, or the 70's just because it's not the same as when you were marching.
Maybe you should talk to a current member of a DrumCorps and find out what their take is on it.

Anytime Madison marches 6 bass drums, it’s always a kick ass show! Love the Scouts always.
I marched crown in 95. I remember specifically showing up to a show site in the evening and remember hearing the scouts finishing their rehearsal that evening. We parked across the street and on the other side of a huge school and could hear them clear as day during the closer. They had such power that year. Remember it like it was yesterday.
I marched that corps from Iowa in 96 and had pretty much the same experience. LOL
I don't think I'm bias, but these shows from the 90's are just fire.

I think 91-97 was some of the best shows and music ever done by the Madison Scouts. None of them were "winners" but they never were going to be. But they definitely wow'd and entertained the fans. These days of DCI are long gone. That sound. That excitement. It just isn't there today. Thank God I marched during these years and was able to witness these shows live in person. Bitterly clinging to my DVDs.
Now, currently, we have shows like T/LT, Felliniesque, Babylon, etc. Shows that each hit differently, with INSANE technical ability on display, tons of drill, and great sound. But they're missing one thing: BE FUN. Madison '97 isn't technically great, it's dirty as hell, people are all over the place. But it's stupid just how FUN that show is to watch. I enjoy modern DCI, but I LOVE some of the old DCI shows.

Its stupid just how FUN that show is to watch because -- thanks for agreeing with me -- the shows were better then. 90s and early 00s specifically.
@@JohnSmith-zi9or 2014 Boston Crusaders had some pretty difficult drill especially the opener. 14 Cavaliers was a fun show reminiscent of the early 2000s but wasnt as clean. I am a Phantom fan so 2010 to 2012 is great but they are an acquired taste to be honest.
@@JohnSmith-zi9or I mean fun is a personal opinion. What you found fun as growing up is vastly different to someone nowadays. While I agree that nothing will beat the shows of the 90s to early 2000s there are shows especially some of the bottom corps that have the same vibe as the 90s and 2000s.
@@Dischingo I just watch 2014 BC on your recommendation. Yes, there are some moments with the drill. However, overall, it is ineffective and doesn't lend itself to the show. Way too much running around, odd and force body movements which add no value, and the acting is just too much. The players always "In your face" mentality as they play is over the top -- chin up, emotion, always direct eyes to the audience -- its uncomfortable. And then the music. Everything is driven at fast tempo so the drumline can ram notes ... so they can say "its hard." Well, its boring when it is almost 100% of the time they're playing. I don't know, there's just something very disjointed about all of these shows. I know the kids work hard -- hell they're more talented than ever. Its the force choreagraphy, the acting, the running around, too much shit going on ... the voice overs and electronics mixed in ... everything. These shows just don't do it like older show designs did.
Kickin' it old-school!! These are the Scouts I grew up with, and this is the G bugle sound I grew up with. Love it. Blow the walls down!

This video is why I got into drum corps. Nobody had more balls than the writers for Madison. They left it all on the field. I was told by a formed judge that the worst word you would hear on the field was BAIL. He got run down by the Scouts multiple times lol.
For sure... the kids/performers were stellar. The arrangements were borderline awful.
These were great years! Not sure why you don't include Madison 1994 in this "dynasty", though: I viewed the 1995 show as really a sequel to 1994, and I thought the '94 edition's sound was just as powerful. (Though not as clean as 1995 -- they tied for high brass that year at Finals for good reason!)

@@somericanguy I might be a bit biased because I heard that show a lot (I was a rookie with the Colts that year and we did a lot of shows with Madison), but I loved the 1994 show! Cuban Overture was great! (So was Malaga, but they famously revisited that one in 1995.)
94 is probably one of my favorite Scouts shows. I really wish they would go back to being that powerhouse corps

One mustn't forget 1998, "Power, Pizzazz, and All That Jazz." Different than the Latin hits from 94-96 but still a great show! The crowd went crazy at every show that season. Source: I marched G-men, so lots of DCM shows.
The absolute best years of DCI we’re in that 92-99. Maybe I’m biased because that’s when I marched but the shows were pure, meaningful, and powerful without an need for enhancements.
Dude I marched Cavaliers in 1999 and we hear the crowd reaction to Madison from half a mile away it was crazy. Gave me goosebumps as we were warming up!

Thanks. Love the Scouts! Great era. My era 1970's with Guardsmen from Illinois. Strict rules then limited the creativity. I saw Madison win the DCI title in 1975. Even back then a fan favorite. I have the Pirate one In my tape (yes vhs video tape) collection. Watching it on this post gave me chills just like almost 30 years ago when I first saw it. Thanks for adding the photos that the drum major took. All the best to Madison Scouts, and to all that have marched drum corps! 🎉😊❤
This show was my first DCI show to see, as a 14 year old freshman trumpet player. Jon Schipper, and the Sop line shaped the next few years of my life ❤❤❤❤
That's how you drum corps. I happened to catch a rehearsal in 96. So lucky to see such an incredible display of raw, acoustic power. Intense.
Marched with Northern Aurora in 95 and then subbed in Bluecoats in 96. I don't remember which of those seasons but we rained out a show and we all did a run through for the fans in a gymnasium. Some say their ears are still bleeding. I'm totally a louder faster higher kinda guy....LOVED the MASSIVE amount of attitude Scouts played with. There was no mercy in that gymnasium....if anything it only made them play louder.....I got to be a rookie soloist in DCI and have 2 7th medals. I'd hand that all in to go back and march Scouts those 2 years.

Always loved Scouts since I saw my first show I was hooked. Who cares what the judges say that ‘96 show was a winner in my book. If drum corps was supposed to be judged like a brass and percussion ensemble we could do it inside and not have the best glove tan lines of all time!
Today we appreciate (and endure) the artsy fartsy stuff while waiting for the fireworks. This is just nonstop candy for the audience

I agree. It seems to me that wgi influenced dci and not the other way around. I describe a wgi show as interpretive ballet with drums and recorded music.

1995 was a awesome show,I came over that year with a corps from England.one day we went to see Niagara falls and as we were going over Rainbow bridge we bumped into scouts,I asked one of the brass members if they played at half volume at practice,he looked at me winked and said what's half Volume then laughed 😂.
I was in Buffalo and they sucked the air out of the stadium that lasted until the Cavaliers took the field later that night
*note about 97 when the pirate captain died he stayed dead ALL NIGHT. I saw him propped up against the bus after one of their shows...

Regarding the comment at 6:05 about 8 tenors - SCV marched 8 tenors for the entire show in 1980, 4 "voiced" higher and 4 "voiced" lower

What's crazy to me is that the '96 Scouts and Phantom tied in quarterfinals before penalties. For that reason alone I hope to one day see the quarterfinals performance.
Madison and the Cavvies always had the most difficult M and M routines and kept the excitement going all thru the show. It's too bad Madison caved in to pressure and brought girls into the corps. It was better with all males.

I miss drum corps from this era. Scouts were amazing!! I marched 91-96. A fan favorite!! I wish corps would go back to its roots. I'm not much of a fan of the new shows. Too much production etc.

I just want to hear what the '97 show would have sounded like with modern amplification. Get the guys some speakers and set them to max volume for a while. They'd break through walls with their sound waves. I would have loved to be one of the few who would have gone deaf from that.

I really miss the drill designs from that era. Modern drill design just makes no sense and doesn't look like anything.

This era was real drum corps. Today's product is watered down - the kids are still busting it out there, it's not their fault - but the extra technology and landscaping has taken focus away from marching, music, and visuals.

WHY would you not move it back a year and start with 1994 as the start of your pseudo-dynasty?! They crushed in Foxboro in 'A Drum Corps Fan's Dream: Part Uno'! They got the 2nd biggest ovation of the night after the 27th Lancers Alumni performance. AND, the writing and power sound of the Scouts sustained until 96 (IMHO). the Pirates show while entertaining is not part of the 'RAW PWER' of the previous 3 years as I saw and heard it, in person.
