    • @AlyxiSistahTweaky25
      @AlyxiSistahTweaky25 Месяц назад

      The argument at the time was the level of competition Makar was playing against. Even on HFAvs, there were many folks questioning the decision; consensus choice at the time was Heiskanen if he made it to 4th (I would have been fine with that as well). Some support for Mittlestadt (who is now an Av) and even Vilardi IIRC. Had the Avs won the draft lottery, supposedly they still would have drafted Makar, but there would have been many tears in that case. Support was split between Patrick and Hischier for top forward (Nico was my choice between the 2). As much as I would like to say I was behind the Makar pick even before it happened...I wasn't. I was not against it, but I was one of those that were unconvinced due to his playing in the AJHL. Once college season started, I learned better quickly.
      But as an Avs fan, I am glad the way it worked out.

I don't think hockey scouts have any idea what they're doing beyond the first 5 picks. The sport needs someone to come in and moneyball the situation. But Nylander after Bennett although I'd have to review the draft and see if nayone later should have gone ahead. I imagine there will be. Nylander has elite skill but defensively hes a coin toss and he doesn't have the ability to put the team on his shoulders and dominate a game. He can be a game breaker but he needs the team to get him the puck in a position to score, he doesn't create his own oportunities enough. And if hes not scoring he doesn't give you anything else. All that said I still take him on my team any day. He's a guy you can build offense around. Whereas Mathews and Marner are more likely to take over a game either with dogged two way play and Mathews scoring touch or Marners ability to slow the game down and find guys anywhere on the ice.

      @martinprice9441 are you mental? Bennett isn’t anywhere close to Nylander. A part from even watching them play, you can look at the difference in point totals in their careers and it’s easy to see how Nylander is way above Bennett. Reinhart had a great season last year and is playing wel this year, but he cannot drive a line or drive the play. He is a smart player that knows how to play with the panthers system and Barkov, but he is nowhere near as dynamic as Nylander. Just watch games and you can see how Nylander is often times the best player on the leafs depending on the game. He is that dynamic and talented and every year he continues to improve on his point totals. He should have had 100+ pts last year but he tailed off at the end likely due to migraine issues that like he had during the playoffs (he probably had them during the end of the season and into the playoffs). Ekblad is a good player but he is clearly not a top tier defensemen as evidence by the multitude of dmen taken above him for team Canada.. Weegar who didn’t even make team Canada is a much better player than ekblad offensively and defensively. I’d argue Nylander’s offensive potential and play driving even warrants drafting him ahead of Larkin (look at their point totals). And while this may be a hot take… Nylander could be even better than Pastrnak. It’s becoming very evident The bruins and Pasta probably overachieved last year with how poor they are playing this year. While pasta is good, he also doesn’t drive play and is as dynamic as Nylander is. Drai, Nylander, then Pasta are probably 1,2,3 picks in a redraft.

    Even if there was a re-draft, I think Willy was either chosen at the right spot or would have fallen further down the list, mainly because of his size and pedigree.
    The knock on Willy in his draft year was his small frame (I think he was listed as something like 160-170 lb back then) and the fact that his father was the notoriously selfish Michael Nylander, so no one thought that he would put work into developing his physical strength, and his first two seasons with the Marlies/Leafs showed it.
    His physical development wasn't noticeable until his fourth season, a year after playing a full season with the Leafs, where he was consistently questioned by Babcock and getting healthy scratched.
    People used to question his style of play (and some still do), but if you've watched him play for the Marlies (which was the better ticket to buy back then), then you'd know that the style of play did not change at all. The reason it didn't work during his first couple of years with the Leafs was because he wasn't fast or strong enough to pull off that style of play at the NHL level, but because he has improved his strength and speed, his style of play looks to have been improved/changed.

    William Nylander was regarded as a great tallent, but beside the good draft class rivals he had was a lot of more related to the fact that a lot of NHL teams knew about his mind-set.
    Nylander at young age had been viewed as kind of arrogant, with a lot of him believing he was valued high and his father, Michael Nylander who was a good player in his time had part to it.
    I mean just the fact how Nylander was close to ruin his image with the contract signing of the Maple Leafs, demanding insane pay for a youngster so Swedish NHL legend Borje Samling had to step in and talk straight to the kid - "That money is not all, that if you value your career and the luxuary of being on NHL level, and being with the Leafs, you don't go this path further".

      Disagree. It's not arrogance if it is true. And after feeling that he was arrogant for a long time, I've come to recognise, as many have, that they have mistaken confidence in himself and his abilities as arrogance. As far as that contract goes, he was not worth one penny less than what he got in that contract, and he wouldn't have gotten it otherwise. He sure proved he was worth more during that contract, didn't he?

    • @leejones6530
      @leejones6530 Месяц назад +3

      Nylander has 10 more playoff pts than Reinhart in one less game. Sam Bennett is elite in the playoffs and has 13 more points but has also played 30 more playoff games. Nylander sits at 0.79 points per playoff game. Bennett is 0.66 and Reinhart is 0.6. So nylander is actually more of a producer than both of them in the playoffs, on a much worse team
