Ducky took Mark under his wing for sure. Ducky was right about him. Mark is passionate about the game and constantly learning. He would talk hockey all day long if you let him! 😅
I'm a Habs fan and Scheifele remains my favourite Jets' player since the day they drafted him. Whenever he scores, I always say, 'That's my Jet, Markie!'.
And at the 2024 draft, Anaheim surprised many by taking Beckett Sennecke 3rd overall when most scouts had him projected around 12. However considering that Sennecke is tearing up the OHL, it looks like Anaheim made a good call.
No one questioned his ability. He was cut because of his attitude and personality. I would have selected him anyway- unlike in Winnipeg, it’s not like he could disrupt or try to control a team Canada dressing room.
It's no mystery, it's because the coach is from Tampa so he took his own guys who aren't as talented. Hagel and Cirelli do not deserve to be on that team.
@@Sonofahctib- Don Sweeney is the GM - it was his call. Cooper and the other 5 coaches were among 13 others - mainly GMs - who advised Sweeney on his selections.
I remember the big question was how far Sean Couturier fell, and when the JETS picked Scheifele, there was a lot of talk about such a low rated pick by Central scouting was taken over Couturier. GO JETS GO!
Goalies develop differently than skaters. Unless they're generational, it's really hard to pick them out. Hellebuyck was a mid-level goalie until he started doing eye exercises during the off-season.

Dale Hawerchuk highly recommended Scheifele which was pivotal to him being drafted by Winnipeg.
Makes sense!
Ducky always believed in Scheifele. 'He's gonna get better.' was one of his predictions.
I think Ducky was impressed by Scheifele's work ethic during practice.

Hawerchuk had a influence on the decision of bringing him to Winnipeg as he was his coach at the time and the jets were having their inaugural season
I know for a while, people were comparing Scheifele to Couturier (who was drafted 8th) as a "See? The Jets could have drafted *him* instead!"
How this guy got cut from Team Canada is one of God's biggest mysteries... At this moment, he is ranked 2nd in goals in the NHL..

Pretty nice draft class
Grew up playing with him and I remember the first year I made AAA. My dad said that was the one guy on our team who would make it to the nhl

Definitely has the talent.

when you're winnipeg you have to draft people who are willing to play in winnipeg (that's why laine and rutger mcgroarty got traded)
