I introduced a friend of mine to Peated whisky by using the Balcones Peated with 65.2% abv. He used tasting notes such as, gasoline, cigarettes, shame and burnt hydraulic fluid. He loved it.
@@ahpadt Yeah I absolutely agree... The "rare whiskies" they review that I'll never be able to try are unfortunately of no interest at all to me at all...
I love the Emma straight up put 3 bottles of Laphroaig on the back display. I find it amusing personally since Laphroaig was what initially got my father and I interested in what whiskey could offer. I certainly went down the rabbit hole not long after by binge watching ALL the whiskey vault videos I could after that. Glenlivet was also one I tried at the start of my journey and it was a good stepping stone into seeing what a broad spectrum Scotch has available.
As a Whiskey Prodigal Son, I am so glad I found these videos again and found my way back to the light. It’s these simple things in life to start the day off right. Looking forward to getting back into whiskey and cigars very soon. Keep it up gents!
I'm almost convinced that Emma is making a game of messing not only with Rex and Daniel but also to all the MBs watching. Seeing how many episodes it takes us to notice then to see how many videos it takes to get R&D to notice.
I just tried this, since we are snowed in up here in Cleveland. It was awesome, my wife enjoyed it as well. It's a nice affordable scotch. Especially since we also like rum. I now want Steakon
I have been cooking my steaks via cast iron skillet for years now - I have found it to be the easier/more consistent way to get my steaks to come out tasting amazing!
I recently gifted my dad The Balvenie Caribbean cask and we enjoyed it so much we are now on bottle #3. hoping you guys have it come up for review soon. and compare it to some of the other rum cask finished scotch.
I will say, steak with Lagavulin 16 is my first experience actually enjoying Islay. Everything before that was just trying it and not sure if I would develop the taste or not.
Speaking Lagavulin 16. I stopped into a small liquor store and they had the 16 priced at $80 a bottle and the 12 priced at $120. Was wrong of me to buy all of their Lagavulin 16?
Love seeing reviews of a distillery's/brand's collection, and being able to see comparison from different whiskeys from the bug guys! ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CAN GO TO THE STORE AND FIND AFTERWORDS!
For the price, I think this is a good drink and value. I compared the Glenlivet to the Dewar's Caribbean, Tullamore DEW Caribbean, and the Teeling small batch (rum cask), and this was better for me. It's a little light when compared to the Balvenie 14, but the B14 is close to $80, compared to mid $30.
Has anyone played around with finishing the same whiskey in rum casks from different countries? Could be fun to see how much difference it could make in the whiskey.
Unfortunately, I didn't drink the basic version, but this one is rather nice and brings to mind rum candy. I bought it on the promotion in Tesco for only £ 24, it is probably cheaper were you live, but now travel for shopping and other purposes is not possible. Slàinte Mhath!
I’m looking for a whiskey to gift my brother in law. He says his two favorite whiskies are JW Blue and Eagle rare. Is there any recommendations that will be comparable to either of those two? My price limit is anything under $100 and I’m from San Antonio. Keep up the wonderful content.
Eagle rare is a favorite of mine also, and I enjoy Michters, Four Roses of any variety, Willett pot still, EH Taylor, Jameson Black Barrel, David Nicholson of any variety, and old forester of any variety but especially statesman. Any of those should be well under 100 and to me at least are really great
I like the Glenlivet single malt scotch whiskey aged 12 years. By itself or used to make what is called "cherry bounce." Get some fresh cherries (6 cups), clean and remove the stems but do not pit, place in a seal-able jar, pour enough whiskey to cover, then add one pound of hard rock candy (unflavored), seal jar, place in a cool dark place for 12 months. You get a sweet cherry flavored whiskey to drink and sweet whiskey flavored cherries to eat.
Good lord! I miss Emma, and hope she is doing well, over at Balcone's. Maybe, an opportunity for her to be featured in a future episode, will present itself on a Lagavulin episode. Cheers MB's! :)
Teeling has a Plantation Cask version...The Balvenie Caribbean Cask is really excellent..now Diageo has a Talisker Rum Cask Finish Special Release 2020 that seems to be THE selection of the 2020 Special releases...among 30yo Whiskys...the list goes on and on. I am a huge Whisky AND Rum collector...and Rum casks are the future indeed.
Had a couple of these, very inexpensive, easily found. Not bad for the price but not a show stopper in any way. I think it would be a good intro pour for a non-Scotcher.
I get a coconut taste then a more toffee aftertaste. I really like the Caribbean version a lot. It’s not rum but it reminds you of it. The second taste is better.
So to Rex's point on this being middle of the road, it's a great intro. Used it to introduce Scotch to a few Irish/rum/mixed drink drinkers with great success here recently!
So far, i have looked for sherry casked finished scotches......kinda prefer the taste......but this Glenlivet flavor is wonderful. Im sad to say i can finish a whole damn bottle and not feel like a train wreck in the morning........dangerously easy to drink and delicious in my opinion.
Great video, I just found the Caribbean cask 50ml bottle for $1 at my liquor store so I’m interested to try. Really liked to comment of the guy who ordered a Lauvi 12 with their steak. Last year I was at Oscar’s Steakhouse in Las Vegas and got a 12 with my monster tomahawk steak and it was great, even with oysters. My wife also tried it and she can now enjoy whiskey, but only if it a smoky as hell scotch.
Okay, how about the new Arran stuff? Great stuff, and it seems like your thing. Not in the part of my life where shipping some bottles of whisky to the US would be doable financially
Laughing at the bottle swap happening with the Laphroaig! What are the other bottles on that special shelf section? I spot Jameson, there’s obviously (most times) Talisker there… can’t make out the rest
Glad you guys did this one. Scotch 4 Dummies kinda trashed it but I am a fan. It is 37$ where I live so I have this as a daily sipper. I also have the Balvenie Carribean Cask and although that is a superior malt with 14yrs age this is comparable and almost half the price.
If I remember right, they aren't fans of rum and sweetness. But I like that there are 4 of them with different opinions. I would tend to lean towards their taste preferences as well as what Daniel said about it. That being said, unless I get to taste it myself, I'm just guessing.

Nothing better than drinking a whiskey you guys are drinking but also picking up alot of the same notes before pressing play. I think I might take the time and become a sommelier
Laught so hard at that bastard nomination that I almost spilled my whisky. Can't belive that you have been MB:s before. Gone back and have seen almost the first 160 + episodes (yes I have no life), you guys have made such a improvement.
I mistakenly introduced my girlfriend to whisk(e)y. Her fav is Balcones bourbon and Glenlivet 14. She can't stand the smokey Scotch, however, she loves Bunnahabhain 12 and a week or so ago I convinced her to try Lagavulin 16. *sigh* Now I have to hide the Lagavulin.
Thinking about what Rex said the other day about yall being so far down the whiskey path for some people, do you think you'd consider bringing in a "noob" more frequently? It's hilarious to watch on the Tribe channel when they get hit with all these flavors, but I think it might be helpful to periodically have them on the Vault channel too. Maybe (since the commenter mentioned the vault is naturally skewing towards a RWF vibe) you introduce a "classics" day of the week, where a moderate beginner joins you guys to re-hash some of the old standbys? Just a thought!
@@DRBales96 I've finally recently gotten this one in the video. I thoroughly enjoy it. IT definitely does have that grassy not with the meltiness. The sweetness from the rum cask is just right in my opinion.
I've compared those two and the Ardbeg 10 together, and as far as I'm concerned, it's not a fair fight comparing the 16 to the 10's. The 16 was easily the best. Have to compare similar AS.
Lagavulin 16. That said it's really not a fair comparison. One is $90 and one is $42 in my AO. Guess which one is which. BTW -I love Laphroaig 10 but I'd take the 8 yr Lagavulin over it all day everyday.
Laphroaig days back-to-back going to pour special dram of the Laphroaig 15. Oh he noticed and swapped. Ardbeg is on deck for RWF. You'll have to put a thermostat box around them to keep her out. 🤣

I'm glad you guys are going to try and do some more "accessable" whisk(e)y for us to be able to pick up ourselves to try
I agree. Seeing them try whisky I will never ever be able to buy even in a specialist shop is only so interesting for me.

With a laugh track added. Turn this channel into a 90s style sitcom, I'm down.
Glen Livet got me into scotch and it has always held a place in my heart for that. I will have to pick a bottle up. Thanks for the video guys!

Glenlivet founders reserve is what got me into whisky. It's the best for beginners!

I do that with any leftover steak that was cooked medium rare. Delicious on toast with a little mayonnaise too.
