- Rex & Daniel sample a cognac-finished version of the famously friendly speyside and compare it to the No Age Statement Founder's Reserve.
Big thanks to Jan Hutchins for the bottle. Cheers ya MB!
Countdown til Daniel notices that Emma's been in the vault...
Lmao...totally love Emma's dedication
I really don't know when or why I started watching these everyday shortly after upload. But now I can't stop and I own a lot of whisky.
Right?! Lol
One of us, one of us, one of us!! Lol😁
Yeah, it happens. Take a picture of your collection now and then again after a year of watching 😂
@@Will-ty5gt If I did, I'd have to admit how much whiskey I'm buying.
I have forced myself to stop buying new whiskey until I finish at least some of these bottles
I like how Peter Golden has his own category now; you have budget whiskies and then lower further, much further, the Peter Golden range
I was about to comment this exact thing and the first comment that came up was this on. Golden!
@@ironmck9826 Exactly, "it's golden!" will forever have a backwards connotation in my head.....
Oh we are getting twice glenlivet in a row due to batch shooting. I love that you brought back more scotch and bigger brands into the regular episodes! cheers!
yeah it felt like all bourbon for a while which is okay but i prefer scotches
Wheres the lagavulin?
I can see Emma's laughing every time she switches the bottles
Really appreciated the timing of this! Just getting into whiskey and paying more attention to the intricacies within them. Got a bottle of this, Laphroaig 10, and JW Black over the holidays, and it is very helpful having someone put a note to things since I’m still struggling with the “I know what this is but I can’t quite name it”. Cheers to the new year!
I got the 14 as a miniature and I loved it. The Laphroaig being on the wall means that we are starting the year of excellent THANKS EMMA!!!!
I just finished off a bottle of the Glenlivet 14 year Cognac Cask finished yesterday, coincidentally. It is good stuff and yes, it is much more complex. Nice review, as always.
Thanks for putting it into terms I can relate to. I live by the ''less is more'' mantra, and the way you explained this brand is exactly why I love it more than any other single malt scotch.
Amazing. Peter Golden needs to be part of a rating system. Like, on a scale of Peter Golden to 10.
Nice dive into the Livet 14... great points around cask influence. Bravo!
I absolutely love the Glenlivet cognac finish. I’m a fan of the 12yo double oak Glenlivet too so I enjoy what the malt brings, but the cognac finish adds a wonderful sherry cask adjacent set of flavors to a malt I already adore.
The Magnificent Bastard clip really never gets old, so much to see.
Chaps ... I can't handle a video a day! Every time I want a whisky to drink along with you!!
That video was glorious. They do definitely have quirks that were magnified viewing those moments in a vacuum though
just tried this stuff last week, might be my new favorite
Let me try a fine blend of Lagavulin 16 and Cocoa Puffs. A fine art, indeed. ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE, I think the most interesting Glenlivit I’ve had is the 15 year French Oak. Quite pleasant! Also, I will be fully utilizing the “Rex Backstep” often now. Thanks, Rex.
My friend gave me this as a Christmas Present, I have a lot of scotch, and for the High Land / Speyside type of scotches, this is definitely my favorite.
Fantastic starter for showing people who are not that into scotch (especially Islay), a bit on the pricier side which is why my Speyside scotch for newbies is to recommend Glenfiddich 12.
Congrats Peter. You have a whole new shelf named after you!
good morning from Canada! love your videos!
Emma strikes at the top of the year....
During last Fridays ep I kept my eye on that spot to see just how many times she moved the bottle. I lost count.... Haha
I Love her stealthiness
Rex! Your groovy steps are the newest dance move at every party; the sip’n’shuffle...gets all the babes🤓🤠🤩
I just bought a bottle of this for a friend as a birthday gift. We tried it and it was absolutely delicious. I’ve never had anything like it.
There is a Caribbean reserve glenlivet, can't wait to see you guys go over that. Can't imagine its so simple
Just received this as a Valentine's day gift from my girlfriend. I've had scotch before and tasted a bunch of stuff from NAS to 30 year old but this is my first bottle. First few drams I'm really enjoying I'm getting a nice sweet caramel some light sweet fruit and a nice smooth long finish with some darker fruits
Hey guys, can we finish going through the quintessential wall some time?
I admire your commitment.
@@loganshiyou1139 thank you! I love this show lol
No
I love that this is in every video's comments.
Honestly I would love to see that too, but don't have your dedication to keep prodding.
@@karl_alan hahaha, we will get it eventually!
I'm still pretty new to scotch. I try to sample one whenever I can. For a long time Glenmorangie 10 was my favorite but I have to say Glenlivet 14 has now become my favorite.
Got a bottle of the Glenlivet rum cask finish, from my brother for Christmas (thank you very much) not a huge fan of Glenlivet. Nose and taste is pretty straight forward. But the finish is surprisingly really good for the price tag. Definitely worth a review.
I've seen it on the shelf and contemplated it, have gotten the carribean cask but guess im going for this one next.
You guys have inspired me to try a blend of mostly Mellow Corn, partially Johnnie Walker Red, in an ex-rum bottle, because I think it might suit me (for an extreme budget blend).
Disclaimer: I can't stand whiskey (yet) and I have trashy tastes in alcohol in general.
Peter Golden you are now your own category. You have made it buddy.
This is one of my favorites! It's inexpensive and there is a wonderfully sweet flavor, I gwt the orange and the raisin notes especially in this one
Yes I get those notes. It’s a wonderful drink :)
You all did this one already, much less talk at the expense of Brandy this time lol
Was thinking the same 😅🤔
I took 2 Glencairn glasses, poured a few drops of cognac (Martell V.S.) in one, swirled it, poured it into the other, then let both drip dry on a towel. Closest I have to Glen Livet is Glen Grant 12, so that went in one and I put a Rye in the other (Russell's 6yr). It changed both in interesting ways. Both had a "dry" aspect to the taste.
My father in law was cleaning out his basement and found a case of whiskey left over from their wedding! It was interesting to compare a 40 year old bottling of Canadian Club to today's major expressions. There was definitely some flavor drift there! The other bottles weren't nearly as interesting a difference, Seagrams 7 was pretty much the same flavor, which I guess is interesting in its own right since things like growing season, not to mention grain varietals have changed significantly over 40 years. It just be real work to hit such a spot on profile even as things change around you.
I just bought the 14 and at $35 on sale ( normally $45 ), it's excellent, much like a good Irish single malt.
It works AMAZING in mixed drinks, though, without breaking the budget.
It is really the price/quality value compared to other budget options. Jameson Caskmates also does this trick of adding something to the basic whiskey.
I bought this bottle on a whim and really enjoyed it! Nice dry fruitiness and sweetness.
Edit: Fancy Dan, can we get a Rex backstepping best of, please?
I’ve always wanted to hear your guys’ opinion on brandy/cognac.
For a lot of people, whisky isn’t the be all end all. They also drink brandy, rum, vodka, tequila amongst other things.
So hearing you *exclusively* whisky people talking about cognac was pretty interesting. Good episode
I really enjoy it. Bought a bottle of this in an awesome little gift set. Came with a 6 oz flask.
I just bought that same thing today. I agree, I love it
When I started getting really heavy into scotches, I would drink Monkey Shoulder a lot. I still do but tend to use it for cocktails more than a neat pour. Now after really going heavy into the Islay and other peaty scotches, I went back to a neat pour of Monkey Shoulder, and damn if that's isn't way, WAY sweeter than I remember. Could be flavour drift, but I think it's more my own taste changing.
I noticed the same going back to "sweet" after regularly only tasting peat monsters!
J.Henry and Sons Bellefontaine reserve is a bourbon finished in contact casks and usually hovers around 51% abv.
Nice Emma.
I just had the 14yr over the holiday right after I had the 12yr and it was deeper, fruitier, with a nice cognac spice good stuff.
One of my favorite whiskey... the flavor is great and delicious....👍🏽 By the way I agree with the palate change impact - I didn’t appreciate Maker’s Mark until I’ve matured my whiskey palate along my whiskey journey; now I find Marker’s an excellent dram.
I just had that exact same experience. I can vividly recall saying I would never enjoy MM. Relatively recently got into peat and deep dive into Lag and Laphroaig. Had a small pour last night of 'ol wax top and LOVED it. The cherry kool aid. Took me right back to my childhood. Can't believe it's the same burbon. I'm thanking grungy scotch for my enjoyment of basic burbon.
I came across this Scotch firstly in 50 ml miniature bottles. In Virginia's state run ABC stores it turns out that buying it in 50 ml bottles works out about 20% less expensive than buying a 750 ml bottle. Interestingly, having now tasted it from a full sized bottle and directly compared it to the 50 ml , I slightly preferred the whisky from the smaller bottles.
After watching this, the birddog and I picked up a bottle of the Glenlivet 14 and cracked it and watched this again! The birddog found the cognac finish delicious, and picked up several delightful notes of must, etc. I, of course, said "Tastes pretty good to me!"
Rex has a signature move even more pronounced than the step back. The lean back and both arms raise... lol
That just started a few months ago. I've been worried that a cask fell on his head, or something.
A friend got a bottle of Chivas as a gift from an employee for Christmas. (They tried) We tasted it and neither of us can think of a use for it so we are going to buy a 1 liter barrel and age it. First tho, we are going to age a wine in the barrel for a few weeks to get a different finish on the Scotch. Should we go with a Sherry or maybe a Conac? Or maybe something we already like drinking like a bourbon barrel aged cabernet?
Out of all the Glenlivet the French Oak 15 yr old single malt Glenlivet is my favorite.
Blending is here. Bardstown Discovery Series, they are blending 10-15 year old barrels, for a solid price.
Just picked this one up yesterday at the ABC store. Its only the 3rd scotch I've tried. The other 2 were monkey shoulder and highland park 12. So far I have really liked all 3. I'd say highland park 12 (with a small cube of ice) then the glenlivet 14 cognac then the monkey shoulder is my order so far.
Great episode, The Glenlivet 14 is very nice Scotch whiskey, but for me and I love Brandy / Cognac just as much as whiskey, this bottle had me split between two distinctive flavors Brandy and scotch, immediately after pouring into a glass I was smelling cognac flavors, with a hints of single malt. For me personally it was neither or on tast also. It's easy drinker and I think if someone wants to try cognac flavors in a single malt they might like this one a lot, for me it just didn't do it.
How come you guys are reviewing this again? (Both amazing episodes)
Any insight on why this whisky is called captains reserve outside of the USA?
I have tried a "Caol Ila 14 Year Cognac Finish, Gordon MacPhail" that one was really good what I recall. =)
And I would go so far as saying. That was the best Single Malt Whisky I have had compared to price.
Best dram ever: Glenlivet 1959 Gordon MacPhail (50y, bottled 2009).
Interesting that this being the first WV video I have watched this year is on NY eve I tried a “blend” that I absolutely love.
Virginia distilling co. Highland port finished. It’s a blend of scotch and American whiskey and it’s fantastic.
But on the subject of glenlivet my “introduction” into whiskey or is that “indoctrination”... anyway the whiskey that made me a whiskey drinker was just normal glenlivet 12 year and despite trying styles all over the spectrum it’s stil one of my favorites. It’s just dependable always consistent. Maybe not the most complex but it doesn’t need to be because it does what it does so well. Compared to say a Macallan that writes checks with the nose that the palate can’t cash.
Glenlivet Cognac cask is a whiskey I was gifted for dog watching. So I was excited to try a whiskey along with the video. On the nose I get caramel, vanilla, and maple syrup. Taste wise, it's a little simpler, i.e. typical sweet whiskey.
Catoctin Creek released a peach Brandy finished rye earlier this year
I love the diversity you point out in the Whisk(e)y universe as we know it and always pose another question for more exploration! Ok, enough waxing poetically and buttering you guys up, two things I got off of this review of the Glenlivet 14 Cognac. 1. I did the exact same thing to my brother that the one viewer had happen to her when giving a gift! I would always get my brother a bo"ttle of Brandy for Christmas for 5 years running. Finally, after much nashing of teeth, my brother said quietly, "Brian, I appreciate the thought with this gifft, but I really don't like Brandy" Talk about egg on my face! lol And 2. Like another commenter has pointed out, Emma has been in the vault again! hehe. One of my favorite things to look for in each episode!
Me, too. I like it a lot better than the founders reserve. It is my go-to for all occasions.
Great value for the money
I was enjoying a glass of the Glenlivet 12 and just watching some reviews when I realized something. YOU REVIEWED THE 14 COGNAC CASK BEFORE!!! This is a double take!!!!
I have a small 5 litre wooden red wine barrel with tap that is now empty, can I use it for my wiskhey?
For now I have filled it with water to keep it from drying out
There needs to be a 15 year old burgundy finish!!! The Tullibardine Burgundy Finish is always stocked in my bar and I just wish there was a more complex, matured version.
Is it me seeing weird things because I thought you had already done a review on Glenlivet cognac never mind. It can't hurt to have 2 review 🥃
I thought that aswell but I think that was the glenlivet captains reserve which is also cognac finish
@@tomkent3195 I know I was like didn't they do this before 😂😂😂 I'll have to check the episode out to see exactly which one it was. When I bought a bottle of it the following week after seeing the first review. I can't remember if it said captain reserve or not🤔 oh well I guess I'll have to find out & if so resample both of them again.🥃
Previous review was done in March 2020.
I Really like this one, I Like to mix it 50/50 with Buffalo Trace bourbon and man it hits a lot of notes.
I had the exact same experience with the Southern Comfort, EXCEPT my sister asked me if I had it before. I told her I had not, but got to teach her that it was not whiskey. I think she just thinks I am a snob, but oh well.
This is my favorite one it is very good but hard to get in Mississippi
had it last week it's a really good scotch all around
Does anyone know how this compares to the 15 year Glenlivet French Oak Reserve? I am thinking of buying this for my dad who is a big cognac drinker and generally doesn't really get into whisky. However, he does have (and likes) the 15.
Glenlivet is just a pleasant everyday dram.
Thank you Jan Hutchins!
Has anyone told Rex that his second reaction pose is a Saguaro Cactus? It's like one step below the Goat sacrifice and a step above his sip/step back.
Where does one get experience with blending? Is it a sort of apprenticeship or does one take classes etc?
Cool. So what's the difference between the one you did in May 2020
Love this
Emma must have snuck in over the holiday. 👍🏻
I wonder how this would do in a Sazerac? The original recipe calls for brandy or cognac... Would also be nice to see this compared to Savage & Cook's wine barrel-aged offerings.
I’m not sure if this has been covered on the channel but as a duel UK/US citizen I think I should clarify something.
When Rex and Dan refer to the ‘smarties’ flavour the UK audience and the US audience are thinking about two different things.
In the UK smarties are a candy that are similar to m&ms (bite size Cadbury chocolate with a coloured sugar coating).
However, Rex and Dan are referring to the American smarties which (for lack of better term) are very sweet, bite size, sherbet, but it doesn’t give that fizz that sherbet does. It’s very chalky and sweet.
Hope this helps!!
The correct pronunciation for "eau de vie" is simply "o de vie", translates "aqua vitae". Love you guys.
Wow, very cool. Whisky was first referred to as aqua vitae as well, shows just how closely related the two really are.
i blend bottles in my bar all the time. If i don't like something say its to vegetal or herbal i will add something that is oaky and brown sugary to tone it down etc...
I will admit that before getting into Whiskey i looked at blends as "We're just mixing up the unused barrels" and now my only turn off is how expensive blends can become so expensive from sourcing so many distilleries (Ie Barrell, Old Carter, Kentucky Owl, etc).
"Peter Golden budget" , this guy is famous now.
Ok, I was confused for a moment - that's the Founders Reserve, not "classic" 12yo that you're comparing it to. I like the FR btw, it's affordable & a nice clean whisky.
I was right there with you. FR is the only glenlivet I enjoy
Good Morning Gentlemen.
I just tried this for the first time last night..It is the first Glenlivet that i did not care for...I have had the Original, Double Oak 12, 15, and 18...This one just did not cut it for me...
Because I am too lazy to look it up but will take the time to type it in here and maybe not be answered,... Does anyone know the cut-off point to be sued for singing too much of a song in a youtube video? Some other channels (Neebs Gaming) always freaks out when one of the members sings or hums a song for more than like 3 seconds. Just curious.
I always avoided blends because I always thought of a blended whiskey is low quality. High West is what changed my opinion, and I love what can be done when a "trusted distillery" does it the right way
Campfire
How do distillers make the decision on what proof to bottle at? Do you think it is fair to say that since a large majority of Whiskey is at 40% AVB they often bring it down to the floor for best revenue, rather then for taste? In my head they immediately proof it down to 80 and then do tastings to see how much they need to raise the proof, really interested in Daniel and Rex's thoughts!
I prefer Spanish brandy over French cognac without hesitation . The solera system of aging Spanish Brandy works so well because it marries younger, more vigorous spirits with older, mellower spirits in a deliberate process, thereby reaching a balance of virtues. Spanish brandy is a true representation of what a grape distilled spirit should be. As the spirit gets older the flavor evolves, it refines itself. To me la bota de brandy Nº 29 and 1866 Gran Reserva are the best...
I actually really like this one
whats the difference from the Glenlivet captains reserve?
Didn't you already review this one on 24 mrt. 2020
?
Decent blend is Mellow Corn and Laphroaig!
Mellow Corn is STILL chronically underrated.
I perfer scotch with steak vs bourbon. Random thought. Drank the 14 with the best steak i ever had in my life. Which the food now probably elevated my thoughts on the 14
And the victory goes to Emma since Daniel walked by the Laphroaig 10 twice and didn't notice.
Any whiskey finished in Armagnac barrels?
I'm curious what the proof was for the 2020 mass mixture you guys had
That's an awesome question. They have the proof tester too, so they could check.
didn't you guys already do a glenlivet 14 cognac cask video?
Wow! A review?
Sometime down the road in case you ever need don't forget to dub it a Peter golden edition
We have bottle lords with their shelves, does this mean we will get a Peter Golden cardboard box for those budget whiskeys?
